The description of how going from 16:9 to 21:9 is underwhelming, but going the opposite direction is a huge difference is how I felt getting a high refresh rate monitor. At first 144hz felt no better than 60, until I tried going back to 60.

21:9 is criminally underrated. I swapped to a 1440 144hz 34" a few years ago and I can't go back. Such a nice experience, if you have a pc to push it properly of course. It's not easy to run in some modern titles.

Yup, I went from a 27" 144Hz to a 35" 100Hz and that loss of Hz in almost all games won't bother me nearly as much as the loss in screen real estate. I do think the frame sync on the ultrawide really helped smooth things out.

i dunno, i went with a 16:9 with the specs you listed. still get a lot of that periphery feel, but it plays nicer with text and movies and such. it's only on some fps'es where my housemate's ultrawide is more enjoyable.

A GTX 1060 handled 3440 x 1440 very well back in 2016-2017 titles imo. Battlefront, The Witcher 3, Mass Effect Andromeda, ESO, DOOM 2016, Rise of the Tomb Raider were graphically demanding games that could run well in the 50-60 fps margin with medium to high settings.

A lot of games let you adjust the HUD area so stuff like the minimap doesn't get pushed into your peripheral vision. I tend to push the hud to be roughly where it would be in 16:9, which also allows me to crop the capture in OBS if I want to stream or record in 16:9 while actually playing in 21:9

    • @patpatboy2

That's a really good point! Also, any games that just plain don't support that, there's the option to run them in a 16:9 resolution then set the resolution scaling to "No scaling" & "Perform Scaling on GPU" in Nvidia Control Panel (I'm sure there's a similar option for AMD cards, I just don't have experience with AMD), so you get black bars on the left and right of the monitor.

having a vertical 16:9 beside my 21:9, I instantly felt the huge positive impact the ultrawide provided for my daily work
the added FOV in ultrawide-supported games, not so much, but it is still very appreciable, especially in exploration-type games like No Man's Sky

For me the extra width par nice with a 1000r curve, i finetune the fov ingame so that when im in the sweetspot my peripheral vision feeds info from the flanks while the larger 34" makes 1440 a little bigger image so it counters the increased fov shrinking the centre of the image. The curves compensate for the distortion on the sides for the peripheral view :)
if you spend a few hours fiddling with this it makes the world of difference for fpv and racing games. In the races u now see a car if it come up on your sides, its quite cool?
to get this effect just 10 years ago u had to have minimum 3 monitors. And finding models that matched and had small bezels was a HARD game

Some games have Ultrawide options in their settings that can move HUD elements further in. Sometimes this happens automatically, other times you have to enable them. Still other times, and most of the time, really, you just get stuff moved off to the periphery. Mileage may vary depending on the game.

Backlight flashing, overshoting and blury motion is VA panel's fault. When I upgraded from the old LG IPS 1080p ultrawide to 1440p 34" VA, I instantly disliked it for the same reasons. There was a ton of ghosting, black colors were getting smushed, blurry movement etc. But as luck would have it, the monitor had a cluster of dead pixels, so I was able to return it and get IPS 1440p 34" ultrawide and all of the issues were gone. Yes, IPS does have it issues like glow, but its not nowhere near as annoying as having multiple VA problems.

    • @DawidDoesTechStuff

I do notice the amount of ghosting on my 165hz VA monitor, but one thing for sure is those blacks are much nicer than IPS's. I think both are still generally good with each having its own up and downs.

@@DawidDoesTechStuff Most gaming VA panels are terrible when it comes to response times, AKA blurry/ghosting. For low-end to mid-range displays you want to go with IPS or TN. I say MOST though, high end Samsung has the best of both worlds, the contrast of a VA and the response times close to TN. My Odyssey G7 is amazing. The new Neo G7 and Neo G9s are even better apparently. The G9 range is Ultrawide if your interested. They are very expensive though. But since your running super expensive DIY speakers price probably isn't an issue.

A lot of the games also allow you to adjust the Hud size/location now, but it never bothered me that much. I would always recommend 21:9 over 16:9. My only issue was that it seemed like there was always a "thing" you had to do or live with when using ultrawide resolutions. Either you must edit the executable to "support" ultrawide, have some screens 16:9 only, or have things like videos stretched. Amazing for productivity though!

You kept saying "envelopment" when I think a more proper term is "immersion". I walked by a curved ultra-wide at a computer store playing Metroid Prime Remastered and within seconds was sucked into the game. It was the Corsair Xeneon Flex 45-inch and I found it on online on sale for $500 off bringing the total down to $1,500.
Pretty pricey but worth it for me. The monitor I got actually addresses the issue in the video of it being curved and not usable for programs that require a more flat screen since as the "Flex" in the name suggests, the monitor is flexible and you can bend it. It has retractable handles on the side that you can pull towards yourself to make it curved and push it away to make it flat again.

(im only missing a motion simulator/treadmill) the trick is to sit back far enough so it still takes up most of your active FoV so you can run it at max FoV and use the FoV to its max. the curve makes it easier for your eyes to adjust and focus.

I upgraded from a 24inch monitor to a 34inch ultra wide monitor earlier this year because I work from home and didn't want to have a dual monitor setup at home. Definitely is better for productivity and gaming in my opinion. The curved screen may seem awkward at first but it not only makes gaming feel more immersive but it also allows you to sit closer to the screen. A flat 34inch monitor would require you to sit further away to see the whole screen. The versatility of an ultra is good too because you can also change the screen to run at 16:9 resolutions if you want to for some reason. You can either leave the black bars on the sides or stretch the resolutions out across the screen. The main downside I have experienced is the need to upgrade my graphics card since I went from gaming at 1920x1080 to 3440x1440. 1440 ultra wide is about 25% more pixels than 1440 so you need a fairly powerful graphics card to run games at good frame rates. You can usually see 10-20 less fps at 1440 ultra wide compared to 1440. I don't see myself ever going back to 16:9 gaming now.

I missed it so much from gaming, productivity, and media consumption aspect. Even doe my Ultrawide panel was quite a bit worse than the 16:9 IPS panel I switched to.
So i will not go back to 16:9, even if its a bit better for try-hard gaming but I prefer the immersion and extra real estate you get from 21:9. As a tip in most games you can move the HUD more towards the centre like BF or COD, that it's not that far away from your eyes.

I like that you went back to a 16:9 to see how you felt going away from the 21:9. It's always easy to feel like it's minimal improvement when upgrading but, as the saying goes, "You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone." A few months ago I upgraded from a 1080p TV from 2011 to a 4k TV with HDR. I kinda noticed the upgrade and appreciated it, but I didn't feel it was a game changer. Then a few weeks later I decided to get a secondary display. I got a 1440p standard ratio display that didn't have HDR and I realized that I was already spoiled by 4k HDR. I had to return the 1440p display, even though it was still technically better than the last TV I had played on for 10 years it felt like a big downgrade compared to the 4k.
However, your complaint about now seeing your room behind the monitor in your peripheral seems like a non-issue to me lol. To me that just says that your standard display is too small. My 4k is a 55" and it mostly fills up my vision from where I sit, about an arm and a half length away. So even if you get an ultrawide as wide as my TV, now you're missing the vertical part and can see beyond the display that way. And I can usually just scale my UI to free up more visual space in most games. And the ones I can't aren't usually the kind where it matters, anyways.

Good thing about Ultrawides is that you can always reduce the aspect ratio if you want to play at 2560x1440 (or you have to if you play games from devs like FromSoftware) so i don't see a problem where an Ultrawide will create issues in playing MOBAS, for RTS i already play in 5120x1440 and it doesn't bother me.

I was looking at ultrawide displays but decided to get myself 16:9 32" 4K display instead. For gaming 32" is plenty for not to worry about peripheral view - it's there, but for any content consumption it's just use the entire 32" of the display instead of drawing black borders to the left and right.

In regards to the HUD issue there are at least Some games where you can change its placement from within the settings, switching it from the 21:9 position back to the 16:9 position if you so please. I'm not sure if all games have such an option, but I do know that it's very much a thing!

I think there’s specifically something about using two or more separate programs at once that makes multiple monitors nice. Trying to put multiple programs on a single large screen gives me flashbacks to the war days of having limited space (one not large monitor) and trying to find some crazy arrangement of all the windows that worked. But for gaming it’s the exact opposite, the little division between the two monitors no matter how small, breaking the field of view is distracting.

I got a 34-inch LG ultrawide monitor during the pandemic. Instead of using the work laptop I would hook it up to the ultrawide to make split windows easier to read and work on. But beyond that though an ultrawide is great for third-person games and is a game changer for racing games. I just love that extra real estate seeing the world around me. I can't go back, and it makes me hate the games that don't support the 21:9 aspect ratio.

Fwiw, many games let you switch to 16:9 even on a 21:9 monitor. It wastes space with black bars, but can solve the minimap problem. Then you still have 21:9 for when it's pog.

  • @MrGrimsmith
    @MrGrimsmith Год назад

The business with the minimap being way away from the centre of the display is a UI error on the part of the devs. It's down to them using vert- for the UI rather than hor+ so basically they squash the aspect vertically rather than stretching it horizontally. Many devs have adapted and UI elements are set at position from centre rather than position form edge which is SO much better!
Oh and if you got that stoked for a 34" monitor you really need to try out a 49" one as it's even better. Plus being able to switch it to effectively a pair of 27" monitors for work is glorious.

I have a samsung odyssey g9, which is my first ultra widescreen. When games support such a wide 32:9 aspect ratio it is incredibly immersive with games such as Star Wars Squadrons and Witcher Wild Hunt. For games that don't do well in wide screen I use Powertoys to create a 16:9 section in the center to run the game and use the left and right spaces for other apps, OBS, web browsers, etc. For one game that allows dual boxing I've had an instance open on the left and the other on the right. Once I got used to the curve I really enjoy it, even when editing videos and other productivity work. I think one of the biggest reasons I prefer a single ultra widescreen is that my computer desk is on the small side and it would be difficult to have two or more monitors.

Can imagine the disappointment going back to 16:9! Interestingly, I used to have a 38” ultrawide and then switched to a 34”. Expecting to be somewhat disappointed at least (which would have to be compensated by the superior refresh rate and panel quality of the 34”) I was surprised I hardly noticed the difference. If anything, the 34” is more pleasant to work with as you have less ‘anxiety’ of something going on in your peripheral vision - after all, we humans only can see properly for quite a limited angle.

I never did. I actually play very close to an LG 48C1OLED, and because it is too close to me, I make a custom 2:1 3800x1900 resolution at the bottom of the screen, really like this aspect ratio, gives a little extra FOV and a nice actual size of about 39".
For games that don't accept custom aspect ratio, I play full screen and back away with a controller instead of going with 21:9.
by the way, the flickering, what Dawid described as "Backlight pulsing" could be a cronic Gsync VRR issue.

If I do play other games that don't work with the ultra wide I can just crop into 16:9. Like for valorant, cuz you use the map quite often in that game.

As someone who has been gaming on an ultrawide (Acer Predator X35) for a handful of years, I'd have to stand in opposition that, with time, one easily adjusts their habits to fit their new monitor. MOBA games, like League of Legends (which I play time to time) I don't even think twice about checking my mini-map in the bottom corner. RTS games, like AOE2 (which I often play), I've also yet to have an issue.
Only real downside to ultrawide monitors is that good ones cost an arm and a leg. The market is plagued with FakeDR monitors and generally overpriced compared to non-ultrawide counterparts.

I had switched to curved 34" ultrawide a few years ago and for most games I absolutely love it. I had a smaller 29" UW that I had picked up on a prime day bargain that had become my primary work monitor due to the ability to have essentially two 5:4 screens side by side which feels like the best configuration for my workflow (lots of terminal work). The only annoyances for me are when I watched 16:9 content; I didn't notice the curve at all in productivity but definitely prefer it for gaming where it makes for a more relaxed, natural-feeling field of view. That being said, I got bit by the 4K bug and recently went to a 43" 16:9 and I flip between which I prefer...for FPS I still prefer the UW I believe (even though you can fake the aspect ratio with a custom resolution on a large format display).

38” 3840x1600 144hz for me. Has to be almost 2 years now? “downsized” from a 43” 4k, just because the “fewer” pixels, made it easier to drive. But. Definitely no desire to go back. The 38” is virtually the same width as the 43”, it’s just had some pixels cut off the top\bottom.
Getting the right FOV seems to be a super important thing to get used to changing, because it seems to matter SIGNIFICANTLY more on an ultrawide. For me at least.
