One of my favorite fights of Marvin's. Showed that he could box going in any direction (doing a solid job of boxing on the outside, then later on the inside a very tough and game Benny Briscoe). That he wasn't a brawler or puncher who swung wildly, looking to knock the other guy out. He could outbox his opponents (if the game plan called for it) as well. Rest easy Marvin, there weren't many like yourself.

Great fight. My first time seeing it. Hagler came a long way as a fighter. Here in this fight, he was more of a finesse southpaw. Moving around the entire ring all night and sticking Briscoe with combinations. Hagler became a much better in-fighter as his career went on. Binnie Briscoe is one of the most resilient fighters to ever do it. He was never phased by Marvin Hagler’s punches. Here’s how I scored the fight:
    Round 1: 5/4 Hagler
    Round 2: 5/4 Hagler (10-8)
    Round 3: 5/4 Hagler (15-12)
    Round 4: 4/5 Briscoe (19-17)
    Round 5: 5/4 Hagler (24-21)
    Round 6: 5/4 Hagler (29-25)
    Round 7: 5/4 Hagler (34-29)
    Round 8: 5/4 Hagler (39-33)
    Round 9: 5/4 Hagler (44-37)
    Round 10: 5/4 Hagler (49-41)
Real rough fight, but Hagler was clearly in command with his better boxing and ring generalship, which is why I had him winning 9 rounds to 1.

What does Monzon, have to do with this fight, unless you are comparing Monzon with Hagler? Briscoe also hurt Monzon in the ninth round, but Monzon came back hurt Briscoe several times in their fifteen round contest. Briscoe also fought a draw with Monzon in 1967. The major difference is that in 1978 Briscoe is no longer in his prime, while in 1967 and 1972 Monzon fought a prime Briscoe. The second Monzon vs Briscoe championship bout fought in Buenos Aires, Bennie lost to Carlos by 12-3 or 13-2 rounds, so he lost pretty decisively. Harry Greb, Sugar Ray Robinson and Carlos Monzon were the greatest middleweights of all time with Marvin Hagler also in the discussion.

Alexander Villagran. Also, another thing to point out is that Monzon wasnt yet in his prime when he fought Prime-Briscoe to a draw in 1967. Monzon was a bit of a late bloomer. His prime truly began in 1970 when he was in his late-20's. The first fight/win against Benvenuti for the MW-Title was the beginning of Monzon's prime.

    • @blackwidowsm
      @blackwidowsm Год назад

Bris was a few younger and in his prime when he fought Monzon, this isn’t a prime Brisco. Solid but a step slower. Bris could give anyone a fight. if he hits you square as Monzon stated, fight is over he has so much raw power. Why hagler like Monzon, boxed and moved all fight long. Nobody wanted to slug with Bris. 😳 Fact is Bris fought two of greatest middleweights. 1 Monzon 2 Robinson 3 Kreb 4.ketchel 5 Hagler and Monzon ended his career on a 81 fight undefeated streak having held title longer defended more than any other middleweight without interruption. But just pure mudfleweightvwould be between Monzon and Harry krebs.
By all means kreb was greatest if you include quality of opponents he gave so many hall of fame middle weights a L when he fought middle wright was the glamour division, and ketchel and kreb were one two. Robinson was untouchable as welter wright going 99-1 one loss was to Jake lamotta . He won six additional fights with lamotta. Against larger folks at middleweight. Robinson was as bigger, more powerful fighters size does make a difference and Robinson won middle title several times but we are just going by middle wright fights. Hagler is fifth in this very deep class of fighters some may put Henry Armstrong ahead of hagler along with several middleweights like gene Tunney who fought middleweight light heavy wright and heavyweight and his only loss was to best middleweight in history in Harry kreb.
Robinson best years were at welterweight. He was an outstanding middleweight just not have same effect as he did at welterweight. Tunney introduced World to technical boxing. Joe Louis would soon adapt tunneys tactical technique at heavywright a few years later. was the first ta boxer who drove the great Dempsey to retire when he saw future of fighting Tunney never on a list which he should be he taught world how to technical box. everytime he went into ring his hand was raised but once. His only loss was to the great kreb. Still hard to believe in that era Tunney only had one loss. Amazing. Middle weightvis most packed division as good as Roy Jones aas he only came in 12th on my list as a middleweight. There were a lot of great middleweights. Probly a lot you never heard of but I could put dick tiger on list as well there so many great middleweights! Kreb beat most hall of famers on this list. He also fought different weight classes weighing at middle weight weight. Sad he died at such young age on surgery table heart condition . 😢 kreb was also first champion who didn’t care what color you were if you could fight he would fight you something that couldn’t be said of all champions during his era. He wanted to fight best whoever they were. He was first fighter to be acknowledged as p4p number one all time. No one has his resume. Not even the great Robinson! Who was number 2 on p4p list those are are pretty elite company. Modern middleweight would be Carlos Monzon he retired as champion going out on a 81 fight undefeated streak! He was closest thing to an Ali both could hit you with sting powerful punches while backing up only two fighters I ever seen do that . And Carlos was the top tactician at msking in ring adjustments. When something not working he would change not round by round but moment by moment. And he threw punches in combinations on last punch he was backing away leaving you no target to hit. He was a master of the side pivot and firing straight rights off the pivot fighters never saw that punch coming. People always said he was slow but he was always first to hit you repeatedly over and over and over again! He was the greatest middleweight my eyes personally seen. He so calm in ring such a tactical fighter too bad he couldn’t find that calmness outside the ring. Monzon kreb Ketchel and Robinson hagler Dick tiger Bob Fitzsimmons those are sev of my top middleweights.Ketchel was the first great fighter having won middle weight and higher weight titles there were no official heavy weight title he was awarded it when he destroyed the heavyweight and he fought at 164 lbs but he fought all three weights middleweight light heavyweight and heavywright he was simply extraordinary considering he started in 1896 going back a few years 😮🤣 But that’s how you create a history not just a present bias. You did say greatest middleweights in history! Those are just seven I could add seven more before I even get to Roy Jones jr which is insane! But this is deepest class of fighters in history and Jones only had a peak of 2.5 years at middleweight his only notable fight was b hop the others not so much he was much better st super middleweight but we don’t include those classes in middleweight debates which hurts Jones resume. No artificial weight classes here. Just the original eight weight classes. That determine a fighters resume vs other fighters. Can’t go wrong with this top six! They also represent various eras one fighter that’s missing is gene Tunney who fought middleweights light heavyweights and heavyweights having lost just once in his career! He created what’s called technical boxing or how fighters fight today! He was skilled so much do Dempsey saw wring on wall went into acting and speaking engagements he was always a natural showman in front of a crowd! Suited JD. Just a few of my thoughts from my fight archive. Li have a lot of material from my grand parents and great grand parents just relieved a few ofcthier stories of kreb one fighter I missed was Henry Armstrong who held lightweight welterweight middleweight simultaneously and defended titles he held he lost a spilit decision at light heavyweight or he would have held titles simultaneously in four of the eight wright classes! Instead just three! Armstrong was perhaps best infighter in boxing history. Didn’t include him in middleweight because he was fighting in several weight classes simultaneously. I didn’t revise how deep of a class middleweight actually was.

Briscoe is one guy you better be ready for.Great fighter.Durably tough. Ok now on to this Commentator. He is all Briscoe through the whole fight to a point where it sounds like something personal. He spends the whole fight talking about Briscoe this and Briscoe that. Hagler gets no credit for his Ring Generalship and his well rounded attack of going foward and fighting backwards. Great footwork and head movement. He also closed the show by not leaving it in the judges hands in Philadelphia by closing the show with almost doing away with Benny. His display of throwing accurate short punches is always underrated and unappreciated. Benny Briscoe showed poor Sportsmanship during the instructions and at the end of the fight.Hagler showed class by acknowledging him anyway. I am wondering if the Commentator is Willie Monroe, or Bugaloo Watts. Good thing he wasn't involved in the scoring!

Wow. These Philadelphia guys were full of it! Lol. Hagler’s taking their guy apart, but they’re singing Briscoe’s praises! I see how Marvin lost 2 decisions in Philly in 2 months. Marvin later Ko’d both of them. Marvin’s bearing him to death & they say “pretty even fight so far.” “Briscoe one of the greats.” Yawn 🥱 he looked like a bum.

I don't give a shit what the commentators say or think. Bennie Briscoe beat Monzon like a drum in 1972 in Argentina.. had him backing up all night long and had him KO'd in the 9th. But hometown referee interfered early and often and with 3 Argentinian judges who do you think got the decision. Monzon had a 58% KO ratio. Hagler had the highest KO ratio (74%) in middle weight history. Hagler would've backed Monzon up all night long and then he would've put him to sleep

Even though Hagler was obviously getting 2 times more jabs than Briscoe, Briscoe put up one hell of a fight. He was always moving on Hagler, always pursuing him relentlessly. If this was a 12 round fight I believe Briscoe could of come close to knocking Hagler out due to the loss of stamina on Hagler's part and the consistency of Briscoe's pursuement
