I met Willie Monroe down in Venezuela in 80 or 81. He was lounging at the pool at the Anauco Hilton in the days prior to his scheduled fight in a few days. What a good man he seemed to be- soft-spoken and modest, smooth with an easy smile. When he told me he was in Caracas for a professional fight I was quite impressed, when he mentioned he'd been in the ring with Hagler I was extremely impressed. When he casually mentioned he'd beaten Hagler I was damn near genuflecting. He was an absolute treasure of a man.
Hagler was a true sportsman! He placed the the Crown on Monroes head as well! He knew had faced a great fighter!
I was born and raised in Brocken and Marvin really a hero in our city..He was the best, the man was true warrior..RIP champ
An interesting comment from Bert Sugar in an early 80s Boxing Illustrated was that the first Willie Monroe fight was the only true loss in Hagler's career. He also stated that Marvin had pneumonia and believed that if he was to pull out, he wouldn't get any more fight opportunities with the promotion.
Agreed. Fighters and athletes in general were at the mercy of promoters and team owners.
If you wanted a paycheck you either fought in the fight or played in the game.
Now endorsements and owning your own abilities to generate income is the norm.
This Knockout is by FAR, 1 Of the most beautiful KO"s I have ever SEEN ! ❤❤❤❤
Followed Marvin's glorious career and became a huge fan. I personally consider the Marvelous one the best middle weight ever. He could box, punch and brawl with the best. He deserved all his victories and understood not to trust the scoring. Ultimately the media blinded judges robbed him on his last fight. Truly a class guy and marvelous champ. RIP Marvelous Marvin Hagler
Judges fooled by Leonard in to thinking he was the better man: he also lost to Hearns on their second go.
Marvin was truly Marvelous - and nobody ever gave him anything in boxing. He had to take it all with grit and hard work. Those Philly fighters by the way were utterly fantastic as well. Rip Marv!
My great Uncle Willie The Worm Monroe
Where did the nickname "The Worm" come from ???????
Hagler was one of my all time favorites. No punches wasted. You see improvements and adjustments from the rematch to the rubber match. I saw his bout with Leonard on Closed Circuit in a theater. My, have times changed! RIP Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Thanks again Rich!!
his bout with leonard when all leonard had to do was not be knocked out and there was no way the judges were going to score that for Hagler. Hagler was the true winner of that fight
He truly was marvelous
Nice upload. Marvin was a one of a kind. RIP champ
My favorite fighter of all time! You couldn’t beat him, you just had to hope you scored more points
Wow I love watching these old 70's battles from Hagler b4 he became world middleweight champion. He had to take the long hard road to the top.
May they both Rest In Power. 🥊💯✊🏿🖤✊🏿⚔️
Monroe body type is like the hitman Tommy Hearns and I am surprised this fighter Monroe isn't known better.
My favorite boxer ever. If you'd told me he'd be koed by a jab I'd have laughed in your face. RIP Marvelous!!!!
It's such a treat to see these fights that I could only read about when I was teenager during the 70"s. Thank you so much!
My pleasure, Alfredo.
That’s what I’ve been looking for: footage from their 1st fight. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
Beyond me why you don't have a million subscribers,, what you don't say and just show makes your work brilliant. This video here is my favorite yet. 5 stars Mr Historian.
Thanks, David. I have another video on Hagler coming up soon.
@@RichtheFightHistorian I look forward to it. Thank you.
Its amazing now looking back on how Hagler had to come to Philly to get fights. Philly had such a rep for boxers back then. They'd beat the hell out of each other in the gym. Epic sparring back then. Feelin so nostalgic watching these fights. Hagler made his bones in the sport fighting Philly guys and getting better by the fight each time. The LEGEND was in the making !
Growing up in Philly in the 70s was alot of fun and such a great time for fight fans.
Love that pre-championship Hagler. That second Monroe fight was a coming of age for the Marvelous one...by the third fight Hagler was showing the angle creation and switch-hitting that he would become famous for. Like you said Rich, he had to lose that first one to grow into the fighter he was soon to become.
Thanks, Rich. I'm late to this one but really enjoyed the program. I'd love to see you cover Monroe's career as well.
Thanks, "The Worm" is on the list but a bit further down the road.
The background music in the second fight was eerie. There's a lot of action on the ring accompanied by a weird music.
i just couldn’t with that music
Yes! I always said Monroe was the prep work for later Hearns
Oh The Marvelous one! He was my absolute favorite! You’ve created a Masterpiece here! Absolute perfection in motion, art. I was never able to see the Also great Willie Monroe since he was a little bit before my time. Great job, truly! BRAVO!!! 🤩😁👍🐜
Thank you. Yeah, I wish there was more film available on Monroe in his prime.
The second fight looks like the WORM up before fight with Hearns . The greatest middleweight ever born , Marvelous one !
One of the things that caught my attention was the crowd in the 2nd fight..that place was packed! Boxing was so much more popular in those days (the 70’s) than it is today. It was truly the golden age of the sport!
Also..that was a legendary series of fights that these guys had. And I agree with Rich when he said that it was the fights against Monroe that made Hagler the LEGEND that he went on to become!
Hagler looked in the best shape I ever saw him in.
Boy, were we lucky to have witnessed his greatness. He really was absolutely Marvelous! I could watch his skill and his contribution to this Art called “Boxing”. He had it all...
One thing to add to all the other comments about Hagler and his development as a fighter is compare this version of Hagler from the 70s to the one in his last 3 fights. This version has a foot speed to rival the best ones as his boxing style was really set up on fast paced footwork. Best example is the fights against Bennie Briscoe, Sibson and Minter where Hagler was still and extremely sharp and fast fighter. The Hagler in the Hearns fight and Mugabe fight had to make up for the extreme milage it had on it and it really showed. I think the Hagler that one the title from Minter would have been able to catch SRL and stop him or win a decision if it came to it.
Hagler was never blazing fast, I don't notice much difference.
Hagler hit him with that good night punch and sweet dreams my brother
Awesome footage thanks
Thanks for the upload, very interesting stuff.
Nobody gave Marvin anything he took it !
Thanks so much for posting! Didn't know all of that....
Sure thing, Halleck.
Thanks, its great, marvellous even 👍🏻👌
Sorry, I have to add a few more comments, Willie and Hearns were very identical in style too. I LIVE. Your choice of soundtracks, absolute beautiful! It adds grit and drama unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Incredible in every way, I Love this! 💪😁🤩🐜
Got the KO switch hitting Hagler was ELITE!
greatest fighter I've ever seen, regardless of weight class.
Rich thanks for the memories…I was there for the first and third bouts…as a teenager I lived near the subway system so I just could jump on the subway regardless of the weather…as you heard the cheers for Marvin he was always a Philly favorite…I also remember David Love I believe from California…trained by Angelo Dundee…knocking out Monroe and every other middleweight we had at the time…good times at the old Spectrum.
Glad you enjoyed it, Joe. Great fights, great fighters.
There were some tough Philly middleweight fighters in that time frame. Hagler had to go on the road to get good fights to get recognized as title fight worthy and even that took time as he was denied title fights until he could not be denied any longer.
He Came up the Hard way. He earned every once of Glory he achieved in the Ring. R. I. P. Ms. Hagler YOU ARE TRULY MARVELOUS. 1love
one of the drawbacks of the great sport of boxing. promoters and judges (among others) have way too much influence on wins, on opponents, on title shots....
MMH was the greatest middleweight of all time. My family is from Philly and my dad saw their first fight. He said Hagler was robbed in the first fight! Who knows. Lot of good cheesesteaks and bad decisions in Philly. RIP MMH.
it's a shame no one seemed to record their first fight. The footage shown I have. But maybe one day it will turn up in someone's attic
How we didn't see fight 4 down the way Monroe looked like a lightheavy or cruiser weight he looked like a 200 pound fighter not a middleweight
Yep I stated this in a common above..He is bigger than Hearns here. Hagler still handled him.No way is he a middleweight in weight.
The ending of the 3rd Monroe fight was great.
The greatest middleweight of alltime!!!!
Appreciate this video! Subscribed
Thank you.
"The Worm" was a stable mate of Joe Frazier
Willie Monroe the only fighter who can legitimately claim to have beaten Marvin Hagler
Check out the smoothness in which THE MARVELOUS ONE switch stances in the middle of an exchange
ENJOYED THIS
Hagler greatest middleweight pound for pound all time...Monzon was very good but didn't have the tenacity or abilities Marvin Hagler had.
Haglers record is truly insane, 2 of his losses should not be counted as losses as theyre generally agreed, and he avenged one of them in brutal fashion in the rematch. Monroe is the only guy that actually really did beat Hagler, and Hagler still came back and beat him twice
The gentle geant !
I like the theme music to this . What is the name of it Thank you
Tommy Hearns was similar to Willie Monroe same build but a little bigger It was rumoured that Emmanuel Lewis had the footage of the first fight and let Tommy whatch it...And said to Tommy " You are similar too Willie Monroe same style " That's why when you see that 1985 fight You see how came out aggresive because in the first fight between Haglar vs. Monroe Monroe went on full attack...Tommy did that same thing but it didn't work this time ....Marvelous was ready!!!
Emmanuel Lewis? Webster? LOL Nah I know you meant Emmanuel Stewart.
Great fights
Great commentary bub..I watch (listen to all your stuff)..good music sets the tone..very knowledgeable..'preciatecha..
Hagler beat Lenard
Monroe is a huge Middleweight. He looks like a Lightheavyweight
So.
@@granddaddyofthemall6320 so ?
.Just a compliment...nothing else.
@@eddielester3589 I don't see how that's a compliment , but ok.
Correction....I meant to say it is an appearance. He just appears to be a large middleweight. I try not to respond when I get sleepy 😴...either way I enjoy the comments and the site
AhhhMANNNN.NOW U TALKN MAN BRUH..KEEP IT COMINH
Check out “Lucky Punch” on here
There are highlights of the first fight right thereM
Whole fight on Kenny Close
Is this willie Monroe jrs dad?
The fight with Monroe he looks like hearns in it
Destruct & Destroy! 👑👑👑
🤪🥊~======
#PHILLY
Strange that a fighter would want us to call him "worm " ?
Willi Monroe did not take a punch as well as Hagler, who was never knocked down during his boxing career. Monroe was a well built, athletic guy though and he didn't do much of any clinching.
Marvin Hagler figth with Soaking Worship
Love your work Bro!!! Where do you find the music? I’d like to use some…
Thank you, Peacekeeper Boxing. I use artlist.io
