Marvin Hagler was the epitome of a professional boxer in every way and the best middleweight of them all in my eyes. He was never out of shape, trained for war, fought with style and controlled ferocity, whilst being an utter gentleman. He was always dignified and calm even when he was being disrespected. As an Englishman, I am embarrassed in the way he was treated by Minter and his fans when he won his title and was not able to celebrate his victory in the ring. Sadly he has gone too soon, but will never be forgotten. R.I.P. Marvelous.

He actually spent most of his time here in Bartlett, New Hampshire. Most don't really know that, but he was the local celebrity around my town. I first met him when I was 8 years old at my family's restaurant, patted me on the head and signed my frisbee for me. He was a great guy, and I miss seeing him around.
Growing up in the Brocton area, the man was loved by so many of us. He always moved forward with relentless pressure until he dropped his opponents. It's great because he wasnt a showboat or bigmouth, he just came to fight and he was damn good at it. How can you root against somebody like that. I feel lucky to be able to watch so many of his fights. He gave the city tremendous pride. R.I.P. Mr. Hagler...
I was a professional boxer and I met quite a few of them in my career. But the only 2 that I have never met that I wanted to was my 2 favorites of all time, Sugar Ray Robinson, and Marvelous Marvin Hagler. To me, they were the epitome of boxing....

Hagler had that iron will that couldnt be replicated. Those old school style of training has and will always work. These ig workouts and trendy movements just looks nice on camera

Freak of nature a reach well beyond the normal for his height , switch hitter , asteroid chin , unlimited stamina .. in his prime years there's never been a middleweight come close he was absoloutely unbeatable , took flush right hands from Hearns and barely flinched ... Nuff said

@@ericrussell9746 Same here. That was perhaps the most brutal/ hard fought fight that I am aware of especially considering the form of Mugabi at the time and Marvin being the imperious champ. Marvin showed tremendous fortitude and Mugabi also gave his all but that fight took so much of Mugabi's punch resistance from him as became evident during the rest of his career.
I was actually recruited to spar with Marvin before he fought Ray Leonard and, on the way to Palm Springs, the guy who set it up for me to come out kept telling me "Don't talk to Marvin, just get in, show him angles and use your footwork but don't tick him off." When I got there, Marvin was walking around the gym grunting to himself about how he was going to pull my heart out. I was like, looks like he's already ticked off! He definitely had a place he needed to go to mentally which is why Ray was careful not to trash talk him before the fight. I talked to Ray a few years after he retired and he said, as soon as he saw Marvin switch to orthodox, he knew Marvin was, at least, temporarily, focused on trying to out box him which was a huge mistake. I still think the fight was super close but, if Marvin hadn't given away the early rounds trying to box Ray, he probably would have remained champ. Just my thought. Wish I'd "met" him under different circumstances so I could have spoken to him a bit, but he seemed like a good person.
Wow Mr. Harris. That's quite an experience! To have sparred with Marvin and spoken to Ray about the fight. I watched that fight and thought Marvin won, even though I was pulling for Leonard.

@@BoxingLife Do you feel like his determination was to his detriment in his fight against Leonard? Personally, I feel like Hagler won but he definetly performed worse than usual and in a documentary it was alleged that he may have over trained because he wanted to beat Leonard so badly.

I met Marvin several times as a kid and have a picture with him and his autograph , my dad worked for the city of Brockton and knew Marvin on a first name basis when he lived here in the 80s, I absolutely cherish that man, he was always so nice to me. Your presentation was A1, what a video.
This was a fabulous video on Marvin Hagler! The man was truly one of the top middleweights of all time! His training regiment was truly hard-core Spartan old school! He was in fabulous condition not only physically but also mentally! I enjoyed watching his fights through the years! A true champion and human being!!

@@benrobbo2902 Again: don’t worry. You’re still young. Have a healthy diet and be dedicated and regular in your training. Things will fall into place. You don’t have to live like a monk. Train smart. If you overdo it and don’t rest enough you’ll achieve the opposite and will have a short and injury ridden career cause you destroyed your body early on. Get at least (!!!) 8 hours of sleep every night and try to take a 1-2 hour nap during the day of you train twice a day. So if you get up at 4am you’ll have to sleep not later than 8pm.

Brilliant video and tribute to the Brocton brawler. I remember seeing him fight and just ripping opponents apart. Never got the respect he deserved. Hagler, Leonard, Duran and Hearns. All legends and Hagler takes the crown for best overall fighter. RIP 👊
Haggler was my hero, when he lost to leonard I was ill for a week . I just couldn't get it in my head that he'd lost. I never had a hero after that. Fantastic work, loved every bit of the video.
I was devastated after that Leonard loss also , l didn't want him to box Ray , l felt if he used his strength & conditioning to rough him up , fight a close up battle & wear Ray down with body shots then head hunt in the later rds , but he fought Ray's fight instead & Ray was one of the best boxers ever .

I've realized for a while now that the true core element of a champion is this inner hunger, or beast as we call it here. People with that are willing to endure the nearly endless grind that, unfortunately, is the best way to make yourself as good as you can be. Hagler is my favorite middleweight of all time and it was always clear what a complete fighter he was. RIP champ. Thanks for this wonderful presentation.
Plus he was able to stay at MW throughout his whole career and still remain strong, resilient and had great endurance whereas many of today's fighters seem to struggle to make weight and have to move up the divisions as they age.
@B45 If metabolism was a main issue then fighters would have been continually moving up the weight divisions during previous eras due to necessity . Instead I feel that the popularity of training with heavy weights is a major factor in the sport in recent years that adds bulky muscle and consequently the corresponding weight gain
He was one of the few guys you can legitimately put in any boxing era and he'd still be champ. You want to box? No problem. Slug it out? No problem. South Paw? Orthodox? Iron Chin. He had it all.
He had a great chin. In his brawl vs Hearns, he was getting countered for almost the whole duration of their short fight, by a dangerous power puncher, but he was taking those punches like it was nothing. Really impressive stuff. That was probably the best tactics against a good boxer with a reach advantage. A lot of times you see guys getting outpointed while stuck at the end of the opponents reach instead of pressing him.
Fight through the punches, then fight through again, and again. Very few people will withstand a third time. He took a huge calculated risk. Speaking generally, the tactics could be better in the sport. Always surprised when you see a fight where one fighter has no jab whatsoever. If you see this, you should take the jab on the way in. You rarely see this basic tactic employed.
I also wouldn't be surprised if his conditioning also helped develop those head muscles. A lot of fighters with granite chins also have impeccable cardio

There's noway Hagler was even really 5'9 . I'm 5'9 and used to train with him. And I had a good few inches on him. So unless he shrunk since competing those stats are off
In my college days I used to spend my summers in Provincetown to earn money for school. On my days off myself and the other kids would spend time on the beach. That is where I first saw The Champ, Mr. Hagler on his run training for his next fight. Subsequently, on one of his runs I caught up to him to wish him well on his next fight. I tried to hang with The Champ but the strong steady pace was too much, especially once he hit the dunes. His physical fitness was something to behold and watching him train in the ring at the Provincetown Inn was an art form. One thing that should be said about Mr. Haggler was that he was a true gentleman. Humble and gracious to all he met. In the few times he would come in to town for dinner he always took the time with all those that wanted to meet him. It was apparent he was smart and the real deal the way he looked you in the eye and paid attention to whoever he was talking to. Marvelous Marvin Hagler, The Greatest Middleweight Boxer In The World. Haglars ring IQ is off the damn chart. Add to that how tough and physically gifted he was, then add to that the mental fortitude, a rock solid granite chin, knockout power, an unbelievable work ethic, and you have someone that's near perfect for boxing. I'd put Haglar vs anyone from any era.
Marvelous Marvin Hagler is my favorite fighter of ALL TIME. It used to be Muhammad Ali, who I LOVE to DEATH, but Hagler’s demeanor, determination, will, and work ethic is second to none. He’s a HUGE inspiration for me.
The main thing that was stated, his trainers believed in him and helped him believe in himself. Seems many trainers don't put much time into a fighter. Hard to find that, especially who put themselves last. Great like Gus D'Amato and the Petranelli didn't look inward as what they do. They gave more than they get without expecting in return.

My favourite boxer of all time. First time I saw Marvin fight was against Alan Minter here in the UK. Such a force of nature. He opened my eyes to just how a boxer was both brutal yet graceful in his art at the same time. He was awesome. Marvellous Marvin Hagler. Rest in peace Champ.

I'll never forget how Hagler absolutely DESTROYED Hearns. That was all guts. Hearns was hitting him with blows that would have flooded almost anyone. But Hagler walked through them & demolished Hearns. One of the top 5 greatest fights of all time.

That's why he was a warrior and went to war every time he fought. Trained like a demon at Cape Cod and then unleashed the monster upon his opponents. Probably the 2nd best middleweight of all time after Sugar Ray Robinson.
Thankss for an excellent breakdown of Marvin's schedule and mentality. Unlike many other sports (excluding some other combat sports) if you're not on your game you really get hurt and humiliated. Some of these fighters' dedication seems to be how clear they are about the consequences of not being fully prepared and how truly they hate them. They keep this clarity over long periods and promise themselves to leave no stone unturned. Nomatter what a person's view of boxing this translates strongly into any sport or serious goal.
In my mind, Hagler is pound for pound the greatest fighter of all time. He held the Undisputed Middleweight Championship from 1980-1987. 12 title defenses in which he won 11 by KO. He could change stances so quickly that he could throw a punch from any angle. I've seen him KO opponents with his leaping bolo jab. Just an amazing boxer and an amazing person.

He definitely had a place he needed to go to mentally which is why Ray was careful not to trash talk him before the fight. I talked to Ray a few years after he retired and he said, as soon as he saw Marvin switch to orthodox, he knew Marvin was, at least, temporarily, focused on trying to out box him which was a huge mistake. I still think the fight was super close but, if Marvin hadn't given away the early rounds trying to box Ray, he probably would have remained champ. Just my thought. Wish I'd "met" him under different circumstances so I could have spoken to him a bit, but he seemed like a good person.
Wow Mr. Harris. That's quite an experience! To have sparred with Marvin and spoken to Ray about the fight. I watched that fight and thought Marvin won, even though I was pulling for Leonard.
Love it! Hagler´s philosophy about doing it the hard way, the right way is something I will always remeber when I am in a tough spot. Great video as always!

Marvin Hagler was robbed of his title! He was the best of all the middleweights. Marvin was the epitome of grace and dignity. A great example of a real man. The world needs another Marvin Hagler to look up to. Gone way too soon!
I met Marvin several times as a kid and have a picture with him and his autograph , my dad worked for the city of Brockton and knew Marvin on a first name basis when he lived here in the 80s, I absolutely cherish that man, he was always so nice to me. Your presentation was A1, what a video.
He was always very classy in his interviews. You had to respect him you had no choice he earned it thats for sure!
This was a fabulous video on Marvin Hagler! The man was truly one of the top middleweights of all time! His training regiment was truly hard-core Spartan old school! He was in fabulous condition not only physically but also mentally! I enjoyed watching his fights through the years! A true champion and human being!!

@@DaveElwoodCutter I started at around 17 but never trained like a future all time great, just an average amateur. hopkins started at 20 and lived like a monk cleaning his entire lifestyle up and giving the sport his life as much as he could so that's what I'm going to do now. I see no other option for myself
@@benrobbo2902 Again: don’t worry. You’re still young. Have a healthy diet and be dedicated and regular in your training. Things will fall into place. You don’t have to live like a monk. Train smart. If you overdo it and don’t rest enough you’ll achieve the opposite and will have a short and injury ridden career cause you destroyed your body early on. Get at least (!!!) 8 hours of sleep every night and try to take a 1-2 hour nap during the day of you train twice a day. So if you get up at 4am you’ll have to sleep not later than 8pm.

Haggler was my hero, when he lost to leonard I was ill for a week . I just couldn't get it in my head that he'd lost. I never had a hero after that. Fantastic work, loved every bit of the video.

I was devastated after that Leonard loss also , l didn't want him to box Ray , l felt if he used his strength & conditioning to rough him up , fight a close up battle & wear Ray down with body shots then head hunt in the later rds , but he fought Ray's fight instead & Ray was one of the best boxers ever .
Marvin was cheated& robbed against Lenard. Anyone with half a brain knows he won that fight. The fox was in.

I've realized for a while now that the true core element of a champion is this inner hunger, or beast as we call it here. People with that are willing to endure the nearly endless grind that, unfortunately, is the best way to make yourself as good as you can be. Hagler is my favorite middleweight of all time and it was always clear what a complete fighter he was. RIP champ. Thanks for this wonderful presentation.

My favourite boxer of all time.
Plus he was able to stay at MW throughout his whole career and still remain strong, resilient and had great endurance whereas many of today's fighters seem to struggle to make weight and have to move up the divisions as they age.
@B45 If metabolism was a main issue then fighters would have been continually moving up the weight divisions during previous eras due to necessity . Instead I feel that the popularity of training with heavy weights is a major factor in the sport in recent years that adds bulky muscle and consequently the corresponding weight gain

He was one of the few guys you can legitimately put in any boxing era and he'd still be champ. You want to box? No problem. Slug it out? No problem. South Paw? Orthodox? Iron Chin. He had it all.

He had a great chin. In his brawl vs Hearns, he was getting countered for almost the whole duration of their short fight, by a dangerous power puncher, but he was taking those punches like it was nothing. Really impressive stuff. That was probably the best tactics against a good boxer with a reach advantage. A lot of times you see guys getting outpointed while stuck at the end of the opponents reach instead of pressing him.
Fight through the punches, then fight through again, and again. Very few people will withstand a third time. He took a huge calculated risk.
Speaking generally, the tactics could be better in the sport. Always surprised when you see a fight where one fighter has no jab whatsoever. If you see this, you should take the jab on the way in. You rarely see this basic tactic employed.
Fighters like Hagler didn’t just train hard …he trained hard with an attitude …he was killer mentality x1000
He had a 6’3 reach at 5’9, and apparently had rare muscles on the side of his head that gave him an insane chin (also the cardio)
Doctors performed various tests on Hagler and found his skull was 20% thicker than normal. This was a huge key to his granite chin!
I also wouldn't be surprised if his conditioning also helped develop those head muscles. A lot of fighters with granite chins also have impeccable cardio

There's noway Hagler was even really 5'9 . I'm 5'9 and used to train with him. And I had a good few inches on him. So unless he shrunk since competing those stats are off

In my college days I used to spend my summers in Provincetown to earn money for school. On my days off myself and the other kids would spend time on the beach. That is where I first saw The Champ, Mr. Hagler on his run training for his next fight.
Subsequently, on one of his runs I caught up to him to wish him well on his next fight. I tried to hang with The Champ but the strong steady pace was too much, especially once he hit the dunes. His physical fitness was something to behold and watching him train in the ring at the Provincetown Inn was an art form.
One thing that should be said about Mr. Haggler was that he was a true gentleman. Humble and gracious to all he met. In the few times he would come in to town for dinner he always took the time with all those that wanted to meet him. It was apparent he was smart and the real deal the way he looked you in the eye and paid attention to whoever he was talking to.

Haglars ring IQ is off the damn chart. Add to that how tough and physically gifted he was, then add to that the mental fortitude, a rock solid granite chin, knockout power, an unbelievable work ethic, and you have someone that's near perfect for boxing. I'd put Haglar vs anyone from any era.

The main thing that was stated, his trainers believed in him and helped him believe in himself. Seems many trainers don't put much time into a fighter. Hard to find that, especially who put themselves last. Great like Gus D'Amato and the Petranelli didn't look inward as what they do. They gave more than they get without expecting in return.

I'll never forget how Hagler absolutely DESTROYED Hearns. That was all guts. Hearns was hitting him with blows that would have flooded almost anyone. But Hagler walked through them & demolished Hearns. One of the top 5 greatest fights of all time.

That's why he was a warrior and went to war every time he fought. Trained like a demon at Cape Cod and then unleashed the monster upon his opponents. Probably the 2nd best middleweight of all time after Sugar Ray Robinson.
Thankss for an excellent breakdown of Marvin's schedule and mentality. Unlike many other sports (excluding some other combat sports) if you're not on your game you really get hurt and humiliated. Some of these fighters' dedication seems to be how clear they are about the consequences of not being fully prepared and how truly they hate them. They keep this clarity over long periods and promise themselves to leave no stone unturned. Nomatter what a person's view of boxing this translates strongly into any sport or serious goal.
In my mind, Hagler is pound for pound the greatest fighter of all time. He held the Undisputed Middleweight Championship from 1980-1987. 12 title defenses in which he won 11 by KO. He could change stances so quickly that he could throw a punch from any angle. I've seen him KO opponents with his leaping bolo jab. Just an amazing boxer and an amazing person.
