- #FefeDobson The Story Of FeFe Dobson | Did Rihanna Steal From Fefe. Fefe Dobson is a Canadian artist that gained mainstream prominence in the early 2000s. During her rise in that era she was compared to Avril Lavigne (who’s is also from Canada) mainly because the two share a similar Punk Rock and alternative rock musical background. Although she gained more attention in her native Canada, her reach would spill over into the ears of US listeners. She had a punk rock spirit while delivering beautiful raspy vocals in her music and Audience fell in love with the Canadian artist. Fefe Dobson’s entry into the mainstream was very promising but over the duration of Dobson’s career her momentum quiet died down. This is the story of Fefe Dobson. Pop Culture
Born Felicia Lily Dobson the Toronto singer began sending demos to record labels at age 11. While shopping for representation she would be boxed in the R&B and the Pop genre because of her mixed raced background although she was clearly punk . People were skeptical that a black girl can make rock music and be successful at it. Fefe was sought after by Jive records but she walked away from the label because they wanted to develop her as Mainstream pop star. The artist would later sign with Nelly Furtado’s manager Chris Smith who would arrange showcases with several labels. Fefe Dobson auditioned for Island/Def Jam and in her showcase the singer would get signed 30 seconds into her 1st song. The debut album for the singer was self-titled, Fefe Dobson was released on December 9, 2003 under Island Records. In 2004 The album sold 500,000 copies worldwide and went platinum in Canada shipping 100,000 copies. Fefe Dobson received generally positive reviews and was praised by fans and critics and the album spawned 4 singles; Bye Bye Boyfriend, Take Me Away, Everything, Don’t Go (Girls and Boys)
Although Fefe Dobson was never overly popular or sold the most in her career there’s no doubt that she has spearheaded the rock era in the early 2000s as one of the few black female artist. Now it’s a lot easier for artist to break out and do multiple genres since Fefe’s debut. She has influenced the culture and was ahead of time.

What do you think about FEFE?
Love her terribly underrated
@@excaliber8713 agree
She's good
Fefe’s album Joy was massive here in Canada, you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing Stuttering & Ghost. Ghost is such a banger that I’ll never get sick of.
Ghost Is one of my favs form her and I want you
But its a horrible song and she sold out too quickly. Thats why she couldnt maintain a long career. Usually people sell out first, and then work their way to being the artist they want.
Yeah good songs
@@faya6974 how did she sell out?
I think she sold out!!
Omg I remember here! She was so different and out of the box from traditional r&b for a black female. She was definitely ahead of the time.
She was lit 🔥
She was nowhere close to r&b. If she wasn’t black you wouldn’t even mention it.
She’s actually biracial. And never did r&b, pop/punk/rock
@@wildhopeXx They said "out of the box from traditional R&B". Learn to read, words mean things.
@GAMEBOUMARCUS-She was never R&B period, so it should never be mentioned.
My girl! Fefe is pop rock royalty! Justice for Fefe
Yes
They did her dirty
There was a 14 minute comparison video of FEFE and Rihanna back in the day that revealed a lot. And suddenly It was gone and forgotten. Great video !!
Omg. You can see the capping for Rhianna in this comment section when MULTIPLE artists have come out and said the same thing where the labels “CLAIMED” that they didn’t like the smaller artists idea or concept but then gave ithe smaller artists idea and concept to bigger artists because they knew BIGGER artists would capitalize and MAKE MONEY for them. It’s the dirty game of the music industry
I think her story is definitely a cautionary one. I've been a Fefe Fan for YEARS (I'm talking like buying the disc at walmart and listening to it on the bus till it broke type fan) so my opinion is biases but I think the music industry at the time was changing by the time Fefe's second album came out. So much so that someone (not sure who) had to make an executive decision that artists needed to be dropped in order to pull more money behind other bigger artists. Yes her first album did well but also Rihanna had the pull of Jay-Z (who was the president at the time at Def Jam). Rihanna's first two albums didn't do that great either however Island Def Jam made the executive decision to drop Fefe, teairra mari (and I believe a few other artists) to make way for Rihannas pop transition. I guess it made sense from a numbers stand point but I think that more people needed to be expose to artists like Fefe because there are so few woman of color in the pop/punk/rock genre. I literally can count them on one hand. I feel like she's an innovator and we haven't seen the last of her.
Well said
Rihanna’s Good Girl Gone Bad era was cheap too. So it made absolutely no sense to drop the other artist. 💀
She absolutely DID!! The whole good girl gone bad was the development process of turning into Fefe's entire persona. Everyone knows this in the industry.
Yeaaaaaaas, my girl fefe finally getting the recognition she deserves!!!
Peridot!
She is an icon
Fefe Dobson was one of the first artists I bought music from
Nice 😊
Fefe is freaking amazing and some of her music reminds me of Lenny Kravitz. I still love her and listen to her to this day. She has great authentic stage presence too
I used fight people in highs school about this matter they though I was mad. I Always believed Fefe deserved more fame. I dont hate Riri but there is something special about Fefe. Im glad Fefe stay trued to herself. Labels really suck man :/
Fefe Dobson shoulda been way more famous than Rhianna tbh.
Agree
I believe Fefe's style was taken because she would not play the game & probably not sex it up either. Look at Amerie & Beyonce's career. Amerie walks down the street normal & Beyonce walks down the street sexy & the style is both Gogo & Amerie came out first. I think The industry copies & puts their own spin on it. I also think Rihanna copied Kelis style too. I am a Beyonce Kelis & RIhanna fan. Just saying I see stuff.
You’re so right !
@@brittnylaurel Thanks. I had a friend tell the Fefe bio because I didn't follow her like that but she's dope. I listened to her.
It's weird labels didn't think she'd be successful doing rock when it was started by black artists
Who cares who it was started by. The thing that matters is who's doing it now.
@@DavidKen878 I obviously care about both so there's that David. "Who cares" obviously me Lmao
@@courtscarnival9683 😘
Fefe is amazingly talented and truely a Canadian Rockstar IMO. Been following her since her 1st album and 1st hit " Bye Bye Boyfriend" Seen her and she is such an amazing young lady who actually cares about get fans. Funny story... My daughter and I seen Fefe the next day we were at Zellers getting our film developed and in walks Fefe so we stop and chat and showed her our pictures. She was so surprised to see how quick we got them and she signed them all. Skip a few years and I win VIP TICKETS to FEFE and of course my daughter and I go again. This time we get dinner sound check and time to just chill and chat with Fefe. And we brought a few of the photos and Fefe remembered us it was amazing. We had an incredible unforgettable night.
Zellers was the best store and they took it out smh.
I’m just going to say this if this was another black female artist and it was shown that they had similar looks. Y’all would be calling her a thief. I’m not saying rihanna is but I WISH the same consideration could be given to other artist
I remember I HATED Rihanna because I felt she was copying Fefe Dobson... Love th both now though but I love Fefe more 🤷🏾♀️
The same thing happened with Amerie and Beyoncé under Columbia. It’s an age old industry tactic to get the style and aesthetic of one and put it on the commercial popularity of another
Omg my high school won a radio contest so she performed at my high school in like 2004 🤣
That was a thing record labels were doing in back then. Ryan Cabrera came to my school. 😂
@@oluwashinaomisanya7487 Or Natasha Bedingfield on Degrassi Season 6. Not real but you get the point lol.
The record industry never gets the disdain it deserves. Artists go with what the record company wants and another artists has no idea. I see zero similarly
Thanks for doing a video on FeFe!
She’s soo underrated.
I absolutely loved her. "Stuttering" was one of my absolute faves.
Freaking LOVED HER IN HIGH SCHOOL AND SHES BACK!!!Rihanna has no ROCK sound that's natural. Its manufactured catchy pop and Fefe actually can hit a note. Fefe is the real thing. I hate this!
She's much prettier than Rihanna. She probably just didn't sleep her way to the top like Rihanna
I think the same ❤
That’s crazy I never knew about this girl. She looks familiar but I think she’s got lost in the memory of childhood. Don’t Let It , Start All Over , and As a Blonde are great songs and she’s credited on all of them. So cool.
They reduced Black music to only rap and R&B.
wow I am so happy you made this video!! forgotten teen icon, she was very relevant when she actually was if that makes sense!
She was lit 🔥
Fefe is a great singer! Her music is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I hope ahe continues i cajt stop listening to her music!! Love love love it!! Fefe if you can read this i love u dont give up!! Keep the music alive!! Youve got it girl!!! 🥰🥰🥰❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💯
Thank you Don .Am gonna check her out.Intetesting.
You should
I love her! Seen her live, even had her phone number. Still listen to her today!❤
I feel like Rihanna loves to steal things. Lol this wouldn’t be the first time cough *joyride
Stuttering was a hit in Kenya :)
That’s my jam
Omg yes! I remember in high school this song was on replay on Trace TV that’s how I got to love it!
@@b.3845 same! Trace was my life!
Stuttering is still one of my favourites. Damn they really disrespected her. Nobody believed in her. She's such a great artist.
i'm so glad someone did a video on this. The fashion mullet mohawks wave that are out now is because of her.
They absolutely stole her image!
i grew up in Australia i didn't know of Fefe Dobson (her music wasn't promoted much here) i just checked out a few songs, stuttering chorus reminds me so much of behind these hazel eyes, the other songs I heard didn't really vibe with. Rihanna on the other hand for me has a very distinguishable tone that worked solidly with so many genres, she is an artist i was always excited about her comebacks, she always switched it up. I hope Rihanna is still bringing out music this year
She kinda reminded me of a black, Avril Lavigne.
I don’t really think Rihanna jacked her style. There’s no rule that says only one black/ethnic female can dabble in rock music. And even with Good Girl Gone Bad, Rihanna’s music was still heavily pop. It wasn’t really until Rated R where some of the more deep cuts were Rock.
please dont go there with the one black female thing, thats not where i was going.
Same I do think it’s a bit weird that it was right around the time she got dropped but she could’ve been inspired and she was doing rock before she got dropped as well in 2006 (Kisses Don’t Lie)
@@haydenjohnson8146 kisses don’t lie is actual reggae. I get why you think it’s rock though
@@DonAnjelo i thought it was reggae-rock
@@DonAnjelo yes thank you
Interesting analysis. Fefe was indeed ahead of her time.
I used to see her all the time back then. She's super nice, looks better in person... and i'll keep what she said about rihanna to myself, lol
I love her song Everything - still listen to it all the timeeee
Fefe's has always been the equivalent to someone like Avril Lavigne to me. Rihanna's style is also 'Rocker' but more on the Rocker meets high fashion avant-garde, meets afro punk, and urban streetwear. Her style incorporates alot more black fashions than Fefe. With their music Rihanna does pop, r&b influenced pop, reggae, Alternative r&b etc while Fefe is mainly just Rock
“Rocker meets High fashion avant garde, meets afro punk and urban streetwear.” This sounds exactly like Kelis’s whole image! Rihanna’s good girl gone bad looks we’re heavily inspired by Kelis’s bossy era.
@@user-ci2sy5jb2j i can see that more.... Rihanna and Kells aren't very much alike to me overall either though everyone was dressing like Rockstars that rawr xd era but Rihanna's 'dark' fashion's leaned more and more towards elegance In a way Fefe or Kelis doesn't even now. Rihanna is more known for her detailing...her heels, extravagant jewelry pieces, purses etc. If anything Kelis and FeFe 'vibes' are little more similar not alot though but I associate Rihanna more with Madonna, Grace Jones with some Lil Kim
@@b.6628 kelis has many different eras not just a rock start image, she has always been up to date with runway fashion Pharell has even said she introduced him to it. they’re nothing alike musically but image wise I can see some resemblance at times
@@b.6628 I agree that Rihanna is more of a Madonna because they travelled around the world and adapted into different cultures.
@@user-ci2sy5jb2j Thank you. Ain't a damn thing rocker about that talentless hoe Rihanna. She entirely ripped off Kelis.
My guess is Fefe didn’t have the “personality” to deal with entertainment management. This is a characteristic in many passionate artists. She seems to have a powerful stage presence. She might have done much better as a song writer for other artists in her genre and taken a path like Tyler The Creator has done for his career. I don’t think Rihanna would knowingly steal from another artist. She was maturing and probably wanted to be more free as an artist. When it comes to depths entertainment higher ups might sink … that’s an infinite abyss.
I had never heard of Fefe Dobson, so I went to check her out. I listened to “Stuttering.” It made me think of Umbrella. I learned that The Dream wrote Umbrella from something “that had been “looped” in the studio. He may or may not have heard something by Fefe. It’s a common practice by studios to collect a lot of music from great artists, whom they have no intention of pushing forward, and then putting it on a shelf until they need something “new.” They change it enough to keep from being sued and voila.
I just listened to a video here on RUclips, where The Dream is talking about how he created, “Umbrella.” It’s just a wild thought. I’m not presenting a conspiracy theory. I’m just sorting through available info and volleying between possible conclusions. Trying to make sense of something that doesn’t make sense: Fefe Dobson not being pushed into a star-studded career.
I just heard stuttering, and it doesnt sound anything like umbrella. Honestly. but it sounds a lot, and even has a similar melody to kelly clarkson behind those hazel eyes....
I liked her! Seeing a woman of color in the genre was amazing to me! I think the label liked her look, but backed Rihanna way more and put that look on Rihanna. Although, I do love Rihanna…. I’m a bigger Fefe Fan 💜
I loved her! She somehow reached me all the way in the Caribbean. She's the reason I got bangs!
I love Fefe. I wonder if she did what Pink did things would be different. Pink started off RB and then said....Sorry, but I'm a punk rocker at heart for her next album and she's been golden since. I love Fefe. More girls need to rock!
fefe is the real queen, unlike rihanna talented asf and I feel sorry for fefe! i don't hate rihanna but everyone knows that she can't sing and dance and that she is ONLY a studio/ auto-tun e singer! her success has always been fishy and not really deserved for me! there are many people who say rihanna would not be successful without jay z, def jam and roc nation, without stealing someone's style, that she steals other people's vocals without giving them credits and is a fake person and these are all facts and true! rihanna is literally the worse jlo! i don't want to be in rihanna's skin cause karma and the universe doesn't play!
always and still is a big fan, being 🍁 too...
It wouldn’t make sense if they had Rihanna replace her and copy her, if Fefe didn’t even chart her two first singles for her sophomore album and was dropped why the the label try to duplicate her music/ style if obviously is wasn’t working. It would be like saying Fefe flopped let’s go head and make 5 more artist just like her, it doesn’t make sense. I think Rihanna just popped up around the same time but it wasn’t intentional
I still listen too and ❤️ FeFe!
She’s awesome
I love Fefe Dobson ❤ She was one of my favorite artists growing up
she has so many good songs and is slept on
Big ups to “FeFe” but Rihanna “transition” was all on her own after her label didn’t support her enough in her early career, Rihanna’s “bad girl” image isn’t an “image” it’s authentically HER, she’s a SAVAGE 😂💁🏾♂️ she incorporates that attitude & aesthetic not only in her music & sound but her attitude & Demeanor as well, Rihanna IS true to herself, in Music, Fashion, Beauty & Business, The 1 & ONLY 🙌🏾!
She should be up there with the best. She's so unfairly underrated. But I think she is great! 👍
Rihanna definitely took her style. I hadn’t ever heard about Fefe but once it became a thing and they were talking about Rihanna stealing her style I definitely saw it.
Either way…this was still my favorite Rihanna style 😶🌫️
As a black trans woman, I look up to her so much!
I think ppl was into Avril Lavigne more Fefe my girl I love her I think they didn’t want a black or mixed race in rock they think it would not sell yes she was a head of time but nah Rihanna in her own lane Solis she came out as pop rnb ppl might have comepare a little but that’s normal just like kelis was also ahead of time as well the pink pop was flooded with acts like simple plan good Charlotte fall out boys Lilix, the Veronica’s and more Avril was the main rock girl holding it down if anything they comepeare them slit a lot back then I miss that era so much gosh now punk pop faded but willow smithy is trying to bring It back popular again also doja as well with the rock say so Version which is amazing I would love to see more black or mix race get into pop punk fast forward today and it’s gone
Now willow is doing it
Yes and they should definitely collab. Willow's already gaining traction due to "Meet Me At Our Spot". Plus, she's made collab with Avril Lavigne and Travis Barker. I think she should collab with Yungblud as well.
Yes i do think Fefe should collab with willow, that would be awesome.
And she's not good at it.
I only really remember 1 songs of hers called unforgivin
"Rihanna released Good Girl Gone Bad"
*shows video clips of Rock Star 101 which is on 2009's Rated R*
Fefe Dobson rules ! And she’s cool ! 😎
I loved me some Fefe Dobson... Everything and I want you were🔥🔥🔥
Fefe done know she's the best!! She don't need to clap back!! Her music is still playing😊 She's married to yelwolf and she's living her life!! Fefe will always be the original female biracial rock artist 🇨🇦🇯🇲🙌
Y'all need to stop making any connection to that woman and Rihanna. She's crazy and y'all encourage her. Rihanna bob haircut was inspired by a movie starting Charlize Theron in the movie Aeron Flux. Not fefe
I thought that girl was camila cabello on the thumbnail 😅
She had a single release almost 2 weeks ago
💙💜💙💜💙💜💙Fefe is the bomb
I remember her and thought she was cool af. She was staying true to herself, I never thought of Rihanna comparisons. I saw two separate women
Fefe is amazing
In retrospect, I could totally seeing her turning down the Caribbean push and missing the boat🤷🏾♂️
Fefe 💙💙💙 The Queen
I remembered her from true jackson VP
A nick kid. I love invader Zim
fefe is a queen. but it’s ERA not ERROR.
Wow, they robbed her so much
I didn't know that about "As a Blonde" which is one of my favorite songs from Dobson. Selena Gomez is ok, but that song being written by a mixed Black girl has a more powerful meaning imo.
I'd be furious about that cover.
First!!!
Then i won't
Heyy
Compared to each other turns into a huge mess. Island Boys like what the. Beep.Beep. road runner.

Could u pls do Nicki pink print review
Back on my page. Yelawolf. This is my life also.
Called her mixed race then a black pop girl ???
X
$orry Fefe..see others think the same thing.
About look a likes .
Fefe was just a biracial Avril Lavigne. She didn't stand out nor invented any look, every punk rock girl was dressing like that in the 00s, Ashley Simpson comes to mind and a list of Disney chicks. There was only a Rihanna comparison because she too was the other Black girl that could pull off the dark edgy look occasionally.
Exactly this!!
i know this is irrelevant but why does she look so much like Azealia Banks ? Like her sister or something.
😂 bish wtf
@@DonAnjelo i swear to god 😭😭😭
Please stop making these videos. Ri fans already hate Fefe as it is. Let Fefe be.
After Rihannas terrible superbowl performance, im left with the impression that she isnt even greatful for the success shes had. Shes so.... nasty.
She went away like a ghost 😏
Please stop💀 she deserved better
Rihanna been a culture vulture and follows trends. When LADY GAGA came out she had that rated r era wearing ridiculous things out of nowhere to stay on top because lady gaga was ending careers at that time and had this image and then you had katy perry wearing whip cream boobs and trees on her head and Rihanna wearing weird gaga outfits too aswell as nicki minaj they all ended up doing this once lady gaga hit with pokerface. Rihanna doesn't even write her own songs either i dont get the hype. No hate to her im sure she's talented but to be that big like someone was pulling them strings *cough*jayz*cough* because besides having a decent/marginal voice shes nothing special imo just a great marketing tool. The music is shallow and generic too
Wow if you wants viewers on your channel all you have to do is dragging RIHANNA's name. For god sake don't compare Riri to anyone.
Those are 5 minutes of waste.
Rihanna has made her self. Look at her now purrrrrrr
calm down girl
