The problem isn’t the quality of the music videos themselves. Every era of pop culture had its good and bad videos, but TikTok has officially overridden music videos as the main mode of music promotion
yeah arguably the quality is getting better each decade with more people getting better at video editing. Even smaller artists have amazing music videos. But TikTok is the main place for music promo now. Most singles nowadays only come with a visualizer or a lyrics video, but when there's a music video, most of the time it would look really good regardless.
this
Music videos used to tell a story.
Yup
And the budget for the video was generous
frrr
So did songs
Most music videoes used to be just people walking around singing, sitting on a chair and singing or full of twerking.
MJ’s music videos weren’t just music videos, they were mini movies. They added so many more layers to the music and told a much more in depth story than if you were to just listen to the song. Another reason he was just the GOAT, he was a true visionary.

Crazy to think that MTV was thinking that there audience would be scared of black artist videos which is crazy because black artist were dominating the charts & album sales

@@pratyushpavansaikia8161 I’m sure I typed that and autocorrect thought I meant that word instead 😂
@@galaksiviralthe comment isn’t about now though..
Which was the real reason why the channel didn’t want to show them.
@@chanoy._v8758 Exactly. It wasn't a deliberate strategic decision
The decline in music video has more to do with music videos not having a dedicated platform. MTV helped because despite showing fewer music videos it still gave them a dedicated spot. where viewers could just been shown the music video for a set time. Now things changed the viewers has to go out there way to watch the music videos. So not having a dedicated platform is what has been making it irrelevant. Although there’s many other reasons, the biggest blow to music video was mtv not showing them anymore.
I agree, social media has everyone caught up in their own individual bubble, so therefore watching music videos as a collective which makes the videos topic of discussion & a cultural moment no longer exist
You've got things backwards. MTV only stopped showing videos because people weren't watching them. Music videos are totally free for MTV, zero production costs. Making their own shows, even cheap reality shows, that's more expensive than playing videos paid for by record labels. If MTV could keep making money selling commercials in between music videos instead of playing anything else they had to pay for, they'd do it. They couldn't.
The problem is, people don't like that many artists. In an hour of music videos, you'd only see a few you really liked. The amusement factor for watching music videos from artists you didn't listen to lasted a few years, and people got tired of that. People want to listen to an artist for multiple songs in a row, that never happened on MTV.
You tube is the designated spot
@@perfectallycromulentdon’t you think social media had a huge play in this though? Genuinely asking.
@@Supachosen MTV was reducing the amount of time it spent on videos long before social media existed. I'm pretty sure it was the success of The Real World in 1992 that really triggered them to shift from videos. They were getting better ratings from a reality show full of people they weren't paying. Why hire people to host videos and sort through them to decide what to play if you can get more ad money by playing season long marathons of Real World repeats? So they made more and more reality shows and played them more and more often, and got rid of the videos.
I grew up in the late 80's early 90's. Music videos were an event back then, but many of those artists who heralded the heyday of the MTV generation have since died, MJ, Bowie, Whitney, Tina, Prince. These new artists are embracing the short form to conform with people's ever shortening attention spans.
Everyone's doing the same thing.
You're definitely on point especially in regards to Beyonce. When she releases videos, it is always on a platform. Self titled on iTunes, Lemonade on HBO, Homecoming on Netflix, Black is King on Disney Plus, Renaissance tour through AMC. Beyonce has always been calculating. She also has her foot on the pulse of the industry and moves accordingly. (hence Renaissance and Cowboy Carter having no visuals yet still dominating the charts and selling records) That is what has kept relevant for this long.
So you’re including RUclips in this because technically every form of social media is a platform
@@SincerelyTracieNo. RUclips is free. Not the same
Internet killed the video star
The reason why music videos are dying is because of Spotify and other music platforms, in the 2010s from 2013-2015 RUclips was the only way to listen to music for free, also music videos used to count like 70% for the hot 100 so artist had to release videos if they wanted a #1 or top 10, now a song can go top 10 without a video because of Spotify and other music platform’s etc. there are some smash music videos in recent years, flowers by Miley Cyrus recently which currently sits at 820M views in a year. Idk tho, I feel like now your song has to be an actual smash hit to get big views on here lol, Ik RUclips itself isn’t dead because look at Mr beast videos😭
Taylor Swift is now afraid of losing that #1 spot in every category
People who follow Beyoncé's career know she is not afraid of flopping, but she always goes against the industry trends and takes risks without caring about what people think. everybody knows she is releasing a film for all her 3 albums at the end.
the whole Lion King's The Gift album and film proves my point.
AGREED
💯
Bro she's afraid of Flopping, she hasn't had a SMASH HIT Single in years, what's up with all this "Visualizer" shit? And all of her "Visualizers" are barely getting 20 million views, she's afraid to drop an official music video in case it flops, but flopping with "Visualizer" looks less bad, just accept it
@@Radioface7779 texas hold em is a smash single from this year… she literally went on her highest-grossing world tour 27 years into her career last year. if she was afraid to flop she wouldn’t be going against all the industry trends and NOT releasing music videos. make it make sense
@pnjlife5888 Texas Hold Em was a hit, but for the most part I'm doubling down that Beyonće doesn't make global hits anymore that transcend Pophead, EVERYONE knows all the Singles off Sasha Fierce, her Albums will always do great first week sales because her fanbase is massive, bur I think the General Public have somewhat moved past her now. Do you think the Average person on the street knows the Singles off Renaissance? Or Lemonade? I'm sure they would know Single Ladies, Halo, Crazy in Love and so on, Beyonće is not a powerhouse in hits anymore
It’s definitely cause of the rise of the streaming era and how it took over the main way of music consumption. For example ice spice did it first song has 30m spotify listens but the video for it has 14m views. I think this is mainly attributed by having more time to do other stuff when you’re listening to a song in comparison to watching and this only ever exacerbated more by TikTok which has decreased attention span. We don’t have time to watch music videos because that requires more attention but I can still listen to a song while doing something else too.
Well Ice Spice’s video is just her flexing and twerking, and all of her videoes are just that. Nothing interesting to watch at all.
I agree. I didn’t even realize my fave was releasing music videos cause I follow her closely on Spotify and catch her releases there.
@@tiganado you have any ideas to how artists could improve this?
I just think with reels, YT shorts and TikTok have put an overload on the experience of watching a music video.
As an artist myself, i pick and choose what songs I do videos for because it’s a lot of planning and budget just for 2 people to like my video
I miss MTV. The MTV where it just shows music videos (not the reality shows). Always had music videos playing in the background. It’s also where you discover new songs and get your attention and start to love, including genres you never thought you’d like.
Music videos are not as interesting & memorable anymore. Most artist are just so boring with little to no creativity.
I completely disagree, they are more creative now more than ever, it's the hyper stimulation of the internet that have brought to it's downfall
Your trippin the Not like us vid being at 70 mill in 2 weeks is crazy.
Exactly plus after the not like us video was released, it helped push the record back up to #1 again on the hot 100 the following week of it’s release
😂😂😂😂 your missing the whole point , this man saying that back in 2017 not like us would have 70 mill views in 3 days or something, this music videos aren't getting any views like they used to , back in the day 70 mil views in 2 weeks would be a fit for an artist like central cee
That's an exception, not the rule.
I just disagree with mostly all of this. Maybe im stuck in my own little bubble but I LOVE watching music videos new and old. Music videos are important and they always will he i.m.o.
I cant even believe that 100 million views is "low"????
😂😂😂😂 yes it's low , considering what music videos used to get back then then it's low
Bad music has great marketing and great music has bad marketing.
I completely disagree. For older artists maybe, but newer artists need music videos to set a vibe at least. It's not "completely irrelevant" (i know u used this word for the sake of a video title for ppel to click on) bc it gives newer artists to look official at least imo and set a brand. Bey already has set hers so using an artists that debuted in the 90s wont work for someone who is debuting in 2024 and so on
Bro the format is going extinct like the radio, go to any new artist today and they can barely crack 100 million views that’s embarrassing, especially with a top 10 hit that shit should make you cry.
I love music videos till this day… they help tell the songwriters stories 💙💙💙💙
I think the ‘new thing’ rising from its ashes, is Concert Movies, like how Beyoncé did with Lemonade, Homecoming, Black is King and Renaissance, but more and bigger, like an album movie, now that her and Taylor proved that people are willing to buy cinema tickets, more concert movies will come out, but then once normal music videos come out a boom of album movies will drop, then eventually after the hype of that dies down people will ask for the cut down version to watch each song, likely mostly via Spotify that way it streams their music.
But I think with the Boom of Album Movies, there will also be a comeback of music Album artistry, like before when song placement on albums were important and told a story, there will also be a comeback in longer songs, to make the movies longer and gain more money 🤞🏽🤞🏽 depending on world wars and economy and shit, but I truly believe that’s what’s coming since smaller and different forms of it are cropping up.
Can’t wait to see 🙌🏽
I remember getting dressed for school in the morning to MTV and it was just a block of back 2 back music videos. There was also MTV 2 that played more college radio or unknown artist which was really cool to see because there was no way for people to find that kind of music pre RUclips. I also remember making the video and diary where we got to see how the video was made and got to know celebrities on a deeper level and see the process of the album or video being created. Now we see and know way too much about them which can make them annoying and make their casual fans not like them. The last music video I can remember that had huge hype behind it was Justin Timberlakes what goes around music video. There were commercials and a countdown to the day it would premiere and it honestly didn’t disappoint.
Beyoncé is going to do a film with all three acts tied together. That’s why we haven’t gotten videos yet.
Did Beyoncé contact you personally tell you this information herself….

As someone who doesn't like what music has become, why would I watch any of the videos that come out nowadays. I know I'm not the only one who feels this way and that might affect the lack of views. Instead of going forward I keep coming back to watch the old stuff from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and very early 2000s. I'm only in my early 20s and yet there's been nothing interesting for me in the past few years. If I happen to like a recent song (which hasn't happened in a long time) I don't care enough about the artist to check them out, they really don't seem interesting.
Agreed. This is exactly how I feel.
I feel ya on that
I disagree. Some artists need visuals to establish their brand. Normani comes to mind. Normani's rollout has been severely undercut by a lack of visuals.
We can't be friends by Ariana Grande has over 130M views. That's not low.
If Gangnam Style video was released today no one would GAF. The problem is over consumption of content. Western Culture in general has turned its back on music. The K-pop industry is doing phenomenal. At the end of the day I think REAL artists must continue making music videos because the people who actually love and appreciate ARTISTS, need that from them.
Say it louder
"We don't talk anymore " is supposed to be boring.
LOL I guess
Music videos are declining do to Social Media and the *LOW* quality videos. Once Hip Hop became *POP* videos have taken a nose dive. Always on the block, Bodega, Macy's, or even in the club..
Yes, it is relatable but that is for a *SPECIFIC* demographic. Once, the Gen Z public started to support *MEDIOCRATY* that's when it was losing it's edge.
Renaissance world tour $579m
No visuals
Majority of rap videos are the same. Not all but most. Some dudes rapping in a hood they don’t live in with a bunch of leeches, twerking every other line, done. Chains and gangs just like it was 30 years ago.
But I do see an experimentation with cinematography, storytelling and pacing with some videos. So i wouldn’t say they’re ALL the same.
Youre so off base with Kendrick. An unexpected rap song doing 77 million views in just over 2 weeks is NOT a flop, especially when the song video itself already has over 100 million views. CLEALRY it will surpass that mark before the end of the summer plus the song is still loved...i didnt see any drake clips in this vid, hmmm
Considering the song already was feeling overplayed at the point of release, 77m is great.
I think you missed the point of what he's saying. Back in 2010s, that views would've been in 3 days not 3 weeks
Ima artist and I will NOT let the Music Video era die. Ima stay making music videos/mini movies keep it alive & kicking 4eva. Artists that still do music videos today understand that telling your story from songwriting to putting visuals with it is part of being an artist. Storytelling, havin fun & being a video star is elements as well. Artist today only know TikTok and Reels so they cant relate they come from Social Media so thats all they know.
Good evening: Ummmm music videos are really really dumb nowadays. Personally I'd rather just hear the song...!! Prince scared wht kids lol..!! I literally remember Snoop Dogg "Drop it like it's hot " video premiered on 106& Park. I miss that show 😔...!! People used to kill to see music videos. Like we were hyped to see music videos. Now alot of the music videos are lame, copycats, phony and stupid. Who's Mr. Beats..??

If Beyoncé is scared of flopping, she would be actually releasing music videos to promote her music and boast her sales… but obviously she don’t care about that. 😂
I could care less about Beyonce and her music. She is overrated. Aliya was a better singer.
@@dianaroach3093 you care enough to comment on her and who is Aliya 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@dianaroach3093 if you think Aaliyah was a better singer, you need to go to the audiologist and I grew up with both and I like both but plastic off the sofa? Aaliyah could never sing that because she doesn’t have the vocality stop lying to yourself and if you think that you really have terrible taste and we shouldn’t even be listening to you in the first place.
This is so very interesting, this whole evolving of music videos, yeah thank you for the video!
In the 80s and 90s music was the catalyst of me gettin a song now Tiktok is getting more streams today.
The thing is the reason why some music videos today would be to expensive to make on each song... MJ would spend millions amd the directors would tax him like 120 million ... so Artists would focus on their biggest singles ...Music videos some will spend 1 million of one great video then then spend 1000 on the others ...MJ would make like MAGIC and movies with his videos...Kayne...and Kendrick Lamar videos tell stories and keeps us in thought Lady Gaga and Maddona would put out GREAT videos.... Rihannas videos was a event making history to have billions of views because she knew her audience... With shock values amd a stories... Beyonce on her Beyonce self titled and Lemonade visual albums would break ground...They told stories...!!!
Only kpop cause I feel like only kpop still makes interesting fun creative music videos with great camera work, western artist videos are boring now and don’t have that same magic like of the 90’s and earlier 2000’s
the reason why kpop mv get so many views is due to fandoms mass streaming the mv. kpop music videos are the same thing ALL THE TIME. its usally a big set and budget with choreography. rarely do u see a story. aespa supernova.. great visuals but no story. ateez work. great visuals no story and just basic camera work. yall need to stop d-riding kpop music videos.
@@archivesunset4214please say it louder for those at the back
music videos arent dead at all but they are no longer a story or huge budget
beyonce is the only artists in todays time where people are begging her to release the visuals so i doubt she will flop because she always gives budget and story
People (her fans) are begging only Beyonce cause she's pretty much the only big artist who's not releasing visuals. If Taylor or Ariana didn't release any visuals, their fan would be doing the same.
I completely disagree with that. Beyonce released most of her black is king videos and no one crossed the 100m mark not even brown skin girl
I remember the days in the early to mid 90's when new rap video premieres were a huge deal. I remember it being the topic of conversation in my social circle. When the internet became mainstream, videos lost their appeal. Prior to the internet, you could only watch videos on MTV and certain music shows on tv. This created an anticipation and certain suspense. Now, you can watch any video in seconds. As the millennium approached and the rise of the internet and social media, music videos became irrelevant. Nobody cares about music videos no more.
I remember before I use to rewatched all Britney spears music videos.
Music videos are irrelevant these days. Music videos peak during the 90s, early 2000s, and the 2010s.
Exactly are we stuck in the 80s and 90s when I grew up? That’s when music videos made a difference you know what makes a difference now? Streaming.
Everything in this video is true, I will say though, music video culture is still very strong in kpop
Who cares about k pop besides obsessed Asians?
music videos for kpop are only streamed so fans can get gotcha moments in fan wars. like lets be fr most people just stream it so they can brag about the views
@@archivesunset4214
exactly, and it's not only the fans overinflating these numbers. it's common practice for kpop companies to buy mv views through ads. inorganic views make up a huge margin, usually over 50% of the views. it's extremely obvious.
@@archivesunset4214 oh definitely i agree, im just saying in terms of like actual production and effort of music videos. I mean just look at stray kids' newest music video. kpop music videos are leading in this era ngl. Theyre on another level there. Its just crazy
Beyoncé is NEVER EVER scared of flopping Beyoncé is more concern about her legacy n breaking industry protocols.
If you've paid attention y'all should know tyat Renaissance has VISUALS but will definitely be released after she's done with her trilogy albums. Once ACT III is released
Beyoncé will definitely bring us back to the beginning of the trilogy Renaissance era. She's very strategic. Y'all will never understand Beyoncé bc she's unpredictable
False
Calm down, she's not God
I don’t know why they think Beyoncé cares about their little non-fan opinion. She cares about her fans. She does not care about people that don’t like her.
Beyoncé is definitely not afraid to flop on visuals. You’re reaching so hard. It’s funny.
Anything for views on RUclips and it’s always the people who talk crap that get the most views on here and it’s sickening and irritating
I would like to add, most people will say it's the streaming era (which is in some cases yes) or because of MTV but I believe the main reason is the lack of creativity, this is why I don't like gen z artists, they're so boring compared to prior generations, the fashion, the cerography, the visuals, the iconic pose (Micheal Jackson), i think they music video in western is too boring, very minimaslictc sad boy/girl aestethic, in which ruins the fun of it. I need bombastic story driving videos with fashion or looks that people will repilcsted later in life
I don't believe this, music videos are much more creative than ever, if Michael Jackson were still alive and released a music video today, a lot of people won't care no matter how creative it is. The overstimulation of the internet is what's making music videos flop, no one cares for them anymore
And you are speaking of western videos lacking creativity, what will you say about k-pop that's all visuals and no creativity
Now I know I'm aging greatly because I grew up around the boomin era of Mtv & to think videos are now passe shatters me to the core!! Oh Lawd Why??!! 😭

I’m right in the middle, last video I watched was Yes and? By Ariana Grande. Just because everyone was talking about it on twitter
I think visualisers ruined music videos
Just a note:
Music video directors became established personas beginning in the 1990s. Hype Williams got his start in the 1990s with the fish lens technique, in addition to the blue light. You also had Herb Ritts with the BlackWhite aesthetic - "Cherish' by Madonna, "Love Will Never Do" by Janet, "In The Closet" by Michael Jackson, "Wicked Game" by Chris Isaak, "My All" by Mariah Carey to name a few. You also had Dave Meyers and Mark Romanek whose aesthetic was more cinematic. Joseph Kahn had a sleek, futuristic aesthetic in his late 1990s and early 2000s videos.
I appreciate the analogy of the music video being a dying star. Sadly, there is nothing in line currently to replace it. There will be a vacuum for quite a long time.
On Kendrick being overplayed, where do y'all get that? Post Malone and Morgan Walker have been dominating streaming and radio charts for the past 2 years, yet no one has complained about them. Can y'all leave Kendrick and his listeners alone?
Yo veía quien era el director de todos los vídeos que veía para analizar su estilo
Music videos still matter.
I wonder if an accompanying idea related to the current fate of music videos is the quality of music right now too. Some commentators point out that music, as a whole, feels more narcissistic in focus than in earlier eras. That is not to say music has never, can’t or shouldn’t be personal because there is natural catharsis in expressing oneself…but this seems more prevalent now with less symbology, empathy and focus on broader ideas…these traits obviously can still be found in music today but they seem less rewarded inherently without the right marketing. Going back to a point you made, videos can be a great place to inject some of these traits into a song that lacks these elements, but I guess for now…
I think you're talking about western artists. The music video is its own phenomenon in k-pop and j-pop etc. That's why they're called 'MVs' - they're set apart from the rest.
I love watching music videos and seeing how they have evolves and visualising the song.
Old man ranting about change. That’s what this video sounds like. Not to mention music videos are still important for smaller artists, it’s only your Beyoncé’s who don’t REALLY need to make them. As far as creativity and heart, it’s still there, you’re just not looking for it coz you’re looking at Beyoncé and Katy Perry lol
What? music videos have been around longer than you and I have been born they’re the old ones here, next you’ll say people still listen to the radio 😂 welcome to the 21st Century friend.
I haven't seen the full vid but I feel like I just got click baited with that “ bey is scared to flop” CAUSE QUEEN WOULD NEVER

Really good video
Interesting 😮 David Bowie response says it all
Then how did renaissance world tour do $579m
Like bro you don't need to look stupid because of videos
Singles now are what? Two minutes max, so no video is needed at all. Plus, to be honest, most of the music released these days will hit the charts for only two weeks, and I'm sorry, the content is trash. Save the budget for something else.
You’re funny 9:34 😂😂😂
12:10 I had no idea visuals weren't important anymore. I'm probably too deep in the asian bubble. Asian artists like XG have been releasing multiple great and creative music videos. If you want something interesting, weird and fun to look at I recommend TGIF, GRL GVNG or Woke Up by XG. You will not be disappointed. And also Rosalía did a tiktok performance of motomami that is basically a huge album music video, which I highly recommend. Visuals are definetely being made, especially in the kpop industry with groups like Aespa.
End of an era
Ariana Grande already knew this will happen
WHO is MrBeast??
This is the second time i've heard his name today.
i just paused the video and checked out his channel.
i don't see the appeal either.
Lol u don't know a dude with 300 mill subscribers..... different much
Besides not like us I haven’t seen a music video in close to a decade
I would have never guessed this title …. #IfYouKnowYouKnow
So.. RUclips or the Internet killed the video star?
saying beyonce is scared to flop is just blatantly wrong…. she does films, the last time she filmed a music video without a film accompanied was in 2013…. The three act trilogy will be a film, just like Lemonade & Black is king. it would make no sense to release the vids for the renaissance segment when she is creating a multi-verse for each album
The motown artists are from the midwest. There are MANY black popular artists from the 60s to the 80s that are from the Midwest. So what was racist Mark Goodman talking about? Motown is in the midwest. Smh
I think the older popstars don't release music videos as much as the new up-n-coming but instead a VISUALIZER.
Tf you mean she’s scared to flop? Her biggest flop would be your biggest success
I love music videos still lol can’t lie
A lot of music videos are shight, thats why.
UM good clickbait to say Beyoncé is scared to flop when she has always said she doesn’t care about the charts. She’s the one artist that has given us music videos for every album except her recent two. For some artist who want to tell us a story YES it’s important but the new generation has no attention span and don’t value the quality in music anymore.
I feel like tiktok has destroyed youtube honestly, feel like music videos are going to start being uploaded there. And Spotify has killed RUclips songs are getting more streams then views and thats crazy to see growing up in the 2010s era
the new big thing at the moment is for artiest to make a movie about there albums and tours as the visuals for the projects especially Taylor made over 200 million form hers it just shows that music videos Arnt needed in this day n age
Very interesting 🤔
I think you are missing a big point too. RUclips is international, RUclipsrs get more international reach than artists these days.
More people know the Mr beat (?) RUclipsr than people know Kendrick Lamar.
The reason Spanish videos have more views is because people mostly use RUclips to listen to music, a lot of small businesses that just play RUclips music videos on loop.
Spanish music is constantly being consumed.
The Politics

All of what you stated about music videos is true, but i think people have caught on to hidden messaging and symbolism in music videos now.
Videos have become easy to read and most of the videos are dark, satanic, overtly sexual or grotesquely opulent.
With so much information that has been coming out about the industry, i think people are a little disenchanted with the industry and with entertainers.
Basically, a lot of these so-called artists have no soul. .. and it shows in their visuals.
😂😂😂 man said all facts, sour beyonce fans on mad defence and the numbers back up what your saying is the funniest ish
I Don't think it's about telling a story, because look at chihiro, boy is mine, fortnight they are art and tell stories but they are still struggling hard, people just don't watch anymore
Beyoncé is already a flop. Just look at her streaming numbers.
As far as I'm concerned, Beyonce gave us multiple visual albums, so if she doesnt wanna give us videos any more, idc.
