How Fefe Dobson Fought Against The R&B Label Everyone Tried To Pin On Her

  • The year was 2003. Beyoncé was Crazy in Love, Monica was So Gone and Mya’s Love Was Like…Woah! Early 2000’s R&B was making its mark and taking over where 90’s R&B left off. Fefe Dobson though wasn’t about that life. She was a rocker chic and had no intention of allowing record label execs to pigeon hole her into the R&B box they assumed she belonged in.

So, Fefe was like the one that really broke the glass ceiling for the “Alternative Black Girl”. Aside from the racial stereotypes, putting a rocker on an R&B label is just bad business sense. They could have capitalized on her at a time when Black rock musicians weren't very prominent but rock music itself was still mainstream.
I believe what different groups of people like has a lot to do with culture and environment. Rock music was very popular in Africa between the mid to late 20th century, and it was popular among Caribbean diaspora as well. _Ska music_ originated in Jamaica, but was later adopted by White artists. The so-called _skinhead_ movement began among Jamaican Brits as a counter-culture movement inspired by the Jamaican _rude boy_ movement and later punk rock. This was then adopted by Whites and by the time it came to the US it had become adopted by White Supremacists, and the US propagandized the "racist skinhead" stereotype and thus ruined it for Black people everywhere else.
Rock music really suffered in the mid 2000s when MTV stopped playing music and went full-on into reality shows. Harder rock genres became a niche internet genre popular on MySpace and RUclips. But by the mid 2010s, most of those fans had grown up and hard rock and metal music ceased to be mainstream. Hip Hop, R&B and obviously Pop music has continued to be mainstream. EDM had also become mainstream in the US, which was originally created by Black Americans in the 1980s but never went national but was adopted in Western Europe where it's been mainstream since the late 80s.
However, I feel that the lack of music diversity has hurt Hip Hop and R&B itself. Kids who would otherwise be interested in different genres now almost exclusively listen to Hip Hop and that's brought the quality of Rap and R&B itself down. Maybe the over-saturation will lead to the popularity of Rap music collapsing, and that would actually help the genre by weeding out the turds and dead-weights. Popular music nowadays is mostly publicity stunts and memes. That's why artists like Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga dressed like clowns in the early 2010s. Meanwhile popular rappers will do anything for attention, from Young Thug to 6ix9ine to DaBaby who used to wear a diaper in public.

Thanks for the introduction to this artist. Ghost is a dope song. Fefe is yet another example of how real talent doesn't get rewarded in the music industry but mediocrity does.

It’s amazing that it would take nearly 20 years from Fefe Dobson for a Black/POC alt/rock girl to achieve mainstream success and that’s Willow. And let’s be honest she was in part helped because of her family surname.

Wait until y’all learned about Tina Bell. The black woman who created Grunge rock and has almost been erased from rock history.

I loved her when she first came out. It was clear to me even then she was definitely that representation we didn’t see in the pop/rock scene and I still listen to her to this day.

I found out about her through youtube as a kid with her single"Ghost".I was suprised to see a rock girl who looked liked me because most of the rock genre was white and I didnt realize how much of an impact black people has made on rock until I became an adult.Hopefully Fefe Dobson comesback successful because she is right on time considering the revival of rock into the mainstream.
