happiest drummer in the world
Yoyoka Soma and Murata Tamu drum happy too!
Indeed
Forrest Rice from the band Covet.. now that's a happy drummer 😀
happiest band in the world
My 3 year old has that same grin when he sneaks into his brothers room to hop on the drums and I hope like Akane he never loses it.
He's already got the Band-Maid grin :D
to be honest, it's REALLY hard not to smile stupidly while watching this particular clip :) I think the most consistent reaction to it is "they all look like they are happy and having insane fun"
@@SocialNetwooky Well, it's any clip for me, frankly, but this one is special even for them.
I've had that same grin for over 3 years.
@@ranger_a6953 It is special... It´s their own FAVORITE song to perform on stage...
Yeah, it's pretty impossible not to grin your ass off when they are having so much fun up there!
Regarding Saiki, she's a bit of a contradiction. During interviews, she's very reserved, almost seeming sullen at times. Yet, when she's on stage, she's in charge of the whole building.
Saiki - 'The Queen of Maids!' - There are a few interviews and behind-the scenes where they are all messing about. When Saiki gets the giggles at times, and the others wind her up, but she's kinda shy and reserved in interviews, true. But she knows how to pick up the crowd and oh man can she sing! - To think that Miku chose her then put her through so many vocal gymnastics to get the songs just-so. - And there's so much competition to be the best member of the band, making it such a great team-effort.
Same as MISA. Its up to interviewer to make them feel comfortable and dont start with questions about maid costumes and that Po thing.
Exactly. I don't think I've seen a bigger difference in anyone then Saiki On vs Off stage. Off stage, very quiet and reserved. Speaks in very low tones. On stage = Queen of the entire venue. Kanami is also similar.
from what i've seen thats accurate for Saiki, Kanami and Misa who just turn into rock goddesses onstage. Miku and Akane are pretty outgoing on/offstage. also glad to see how well they get along when theyre not performing, they constantly joke around on instagram and twitter
Reserved aggression.
13:17 top right corner. You can see a camera that Akane uses to record herself so she can look for errors and check up on her form.
Gotta keep band maid live on a regular rotation, they will keep impressing you
They indeed use a click track for live gigs, except for MISA, the bass player. According to Kanami (lead guitarist) she doesn't need it because her sense of rythm is perfect.
Other great live performances are Onset (instrumental), Domination, Real Existence and Play. You really can't go wrong.
She also - according to Kanami - has perfect pitch, so she's pretty much a musical phenomenon.
I read somewhere that this is one of the reasons why she's always playing barefoot, to feel the vibrations of the music on stage. But I don't have an official source for that.
@@ANDOR- correct MISA feels her way through the music she connects the drive of Akane's kick and snare to the melody of Saiki and Miku's vocals. She basically plays both octaves and sometimes chords in between. Akane is the atomic clock her timing and ability to adlib whilst remaining in the pocket is uncanny.
Onset is brilliant. I would love to hear more songs where Misa gets to show off her talent. She is a phenom.
Try Onset, an insrrumental, the musicianship really shines. Puzzle, where they open with synth. Jimmy Page caught them live in Tokyo, went backstage with them, did photo with Akane, calling her basically the new John Bonham. Tamu of Nemophila an incredible drummer, songs like Raitei.
i recommend checking out nemophila too! their drummer is indeed amazing
Agreed, Nemophila, incl drummer Tama Murata (aka MurataTamu). MV Raitei (Thunder) is pretty representative of their harder stuff (Japanese bands' styles can vary far wider than most western-branded bands...) ruclips.net/video/lh-dVLKP314/видео.html
A fun reaction (following Japanese female drummers) could be watching Deep Purple's Ian Paice himself react to Yoyoka's drum cover of DP's song "Burn" ruclips.net/video/0RyJKiollcA/видео.html
"Jimmy Page (...) calling her basically the new John Bonham." Why do people still spread this? It's nothing but a rumour and not very likely.
@@xxxxyz1574 He requested to meet her, at an awards show where he could have hung out with plenty of talent, he chose her, there’s a pic. (“Next Bonham” does seem a stretch)
Yes Page called her energy like Bonham. Just search ,page meeting Akane hirose. It’s not letting me post links.
Akane is in charge of their backing tracks, which they use on some of their live songs...that's what the device was to her left. It's most obvious when they have synth tracks, but they also use one for a third guitar part in Onset. This obviously requires the use of click tracks, too.
Yup, Akane is a multi tasker supreme
I KNEW THERE WAS A THIRD GUITAR PART IN ONSET!
Akane is in charge of EVERYTHING... rehearsal schedule, meetings set list, timing, etc.... She is the band's leader
@@WillVafuth They stopped having the position of 'band leader' years ago.
One of the best transitions ever - that drum to guitar solo.
Yes, that was a work of art, for sure. The transitional riff, and the smooth transition to the solo. Masterwork. Damn, they are good!
Great breakdown! Thank you!
Couple of things:
Yes, Band-Maid plays to a click track, big reason why they play so tight and in the pocket live.
Akane does use a Roland emulator for triggering various fill sounds. Yes, several songs of synth and other background parts to them. She has even done a demo video for Roland. ruclips.net/video/a9B5b_FqsC4/видео.html
She does indeed use a double pedal and has recently improved it even more on the new album Unseen World by playing around with the weight placement and stroke length to increase her speed. She's now able to hit 220bpm on the new song Black Hole.
All members use in-ear monitors with the 4 principles now being wireless as of 2018.
This song, "Freedom" has been Band-Maid's standard, if you will. Their declarative song and one that they all just have fun playing (as the video shows). I have feeling this song has now been replaced as their standard by Manners. Same emotive feeling but with an updated sound and lyrics to represent where they are now, and rightfully so.
MISA is playing a Black Smoker custom signature MISA Bordeaux SG jazz bass. This was a new bass for her at the time of this okyu-ji. She is endorsed by Black Smoker Custom with a couple of MISA signature models. (Yes, MISA's name is stylized in all caps as that is how she wants to be known) She is arguably one of the top rock bassists playing currently, absolutely amazing talent.
Anywho... thanks for a great breakdown!
I've elsewhere seen that written as Black Cloud (rather than Black Smoker). I suspect it's something Japanese that can be translated either way....
@@RolandTumble23 you're correct. I misspoke. Black Cloud is the maker and Black Smoker is model. :)
Yep. Freedom and Alone is always on the setlist.
MISA's brand of bass is Black Cloud not Black Smoker.....
That transition from drum solo to guitar solo is epic! Notice at the end of Akane’s solo the music starts up! They realized she wasn’t done until Kanami turned to her and signal her with a few notes on her guitar, this time is was Kanami who singled the transition to her solo! Great job by Band-Maid!
They have some sound effects in various songs. But I'm convinced the primary job of the soundboard thing is to screw with Miku.
Yea, I have the concert on Blu-ray as well. Poor pigeon.
Wait, did I miss something?
I may vaguely recall something about an out-of-place backing track...
@@stevehall5128 In Miku's latest magic time, Akane and Misa (I think?) appear behind Miku to mess with her show, hitting the drum pads so they emit male voices etc.. Semi-staged of course, but fun anyway.
@@ranger_a6953 Thanks, I remember now!
And they always leave you smiling.
If you watch the music video for "Rinne" (reincarnation) you will see Akane pound the double kick right at the beginning of the video. Hard rocking song
Akane challenged herself on the speed factor in Rhine, clocked it beyond successfully with her expectations, she likes to race.
Welcome to the rabbit hole of BandMaid. Now that your hooked will spend hours listening to this fantastic band.
some call it as a "pigeon hole" though, LoL \m/
Yes baby metal has their foxhole, band maid has their pigeon hole because miku kobata means small pigeon . Long Live the PO !
I would suggest Blooming (MV), Play (Live), Rinne (MV), Onset (Live Instruemntal). I have been really enjoying your reactions and will be watching more.
I just typed a comment suggesting many of the same ones
Also "Wonderland" live has great drumming. And in the MV of "without holding back" you can see Akane's double pedals but the video is only in the DVD/Blu-ray
@@paulwilson7989 Yep...agree about Rinne Mv
@@falconsooner yep, I made a booboo, corrected it. Definitely the MV
@@1972cd We will let it slide this time:)
THE best live Rock band on Earth - and they have more fun while slamming out Rock than any other band. Jimmy Page went backstage to get a selfie with Akane and tell her how good the band was, which, as someone who saw Bonham play with Zeppelin back in 1979, I can attest is quite a compliment. Band-Maid and Babymetal are the most refreshing acts in the Rock and Metal world.
Had to look it up, its legit. Thats so cool!
There is also a very tiny little drummer in Lovebites who will blow you away: Haruna!
Absolutely agree - Haruna rocks her Pearls 🤘
Yes she is fast, but Akane is way more technical.
@@EbefrenRevo Let's see what Mike's evaluation is after he has heard her a few times. I like them both very much.
@@EbefrenRevo I preferred technical over speed.. majority drummer can do speed but being technical i dont think so
Agree she's also a mindblower alright with her star symbol.
If you're wondering about Akane's set, check these out:

Tears of joy! Great reaction. The excitement and genuine appreciation is so evident. Epic drum solo. The transition to guitar solo was smooth as well.
Always cool to hear technical breakdowns explaining why I like something ....
I'm so waiting for this one
Me too!
Me too.
Ditto 🤩🤩🤩
This is a Win-Win situation! You are enjoying them SO MUCH and the viewers can learn a lot from your videos... Really nice! You had a poll on your channel last time, i think a lot of ppl said: Akane is the best drummer right now, i also said: After John Bonham she is the drummer that impressed me the most of all bands i´ve heard so far. And what it makes even more enjoyable is her smile, she is FOR SURE the happiest drummer on earth!
Greetings from Germany and this band is just making everyone smile and it´s always a great time, i won´t miss them in my life, especially right now with this COVID ruining the interaction with other ppl and sitting home alone most of the time!
FYI, Akane's drumset is:
TAMA Star Bubinga 10x7, 12x8, 16x16, 22x16 (customed colour - Asuka's red from anime "Evangelion")
Snare: Ludwig Black Beauty 14x5
Pedals: DW9002
K Zildjian Hihats 14
K Custom Hybrid Ride 20
A Custom Projection Crash 18
S Trash Crash 18
A Zildjian Heavy UltraHammered China 19
She used 4 pieces set before she added the second tom in 2016.

Thank you
Band maid enjoy play live...smile in your face is crazy....one best rock band in the universe
That was really good. I have heard other knowledgeable reactors comment about her timing. Several live videos worth reacting to. Play Live is driven by bass and drums. Wonderland Live is a jazzy rock ballad if you want to see something different. Onset Live is an instrumental. Domination Live is another classic style hard rock song with a mini solo.
Of the MVs...Manners is one of the newer ones and is a bluesy hard rock song with slower tempo. Akane said it was one of her more challenging songs. Blooming has some great drumming and Rinne has a fast BPM and it shows her using the double pedal (albeit briefly).
Really enjoying your reactions!
Rinne (official music video) shows a little bit of Akane's footwork at the beginning.
Guys please can I share this awesome guy he puts a lot of effort and I wish he has loads more people enjoying his content to
Love your breakdown! Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of their songs. Domination live from the same concert is a banger, but are all their other songs. Akane comes up with something interesting in all of their songs.
I'm glad you'r enjoying them, their live performances are really good.
Since your reactions, I've re-watched some older performances with renewed interest - catching glimpses of pedals, listening for triplets, punk versus disco pattern switches. New world for a non-drummer! Many thanks.
Band Maid are incredible. Akane, and Tamu in Nemophila, are my favorite drummers now. Right there with Bonham and Michael Derossier of Heart, even the great Buddy Rich. Doing so much on smaller kits. And I love Kanami, such an incredible guitarist and composer.
You forgot Akane's friend Haruna, who drums for Lovebites.
Akane had not used a double pedal until Kanami suggested it. Akane Hirose is the John Bonham of J-Girl drummers; Rina Suzuki (SCANDAL), who had never played drums prior to joining SCANDAL at 15, is the Ringo Starr with her consistent heavy beats; and Senri Kawaguchi is the spirit of Buddy Rich reincarnate...jazz drummer supreme. All three are noted not only for their abilities, but for their near constant smiling while playing.
Stratus (Billy Cobham cover - live) - Senri Kawaguchi ruclips.net/video/xwyJXn7Iv6c/видео.html
Shunkan Sentimental (live) - SCANDAL ruclips.net/video/BMX7egYOoIY/видео.html
Thank you!
Glad you did a reaction to this :)
This song is an old one which is not written by them by somehow they loved performing this in live gig.
For groovy stuffs, new song Manners or older one Bubble
For traditional Japanese vibe, Gion Cho ( they dressed as Geisha apprentices)
These are good choices for future reactions.
Bubble..!! yes!
"FREEDOM"
It's a good selection👍
Queen(SAIKI) shouts,
Pigeon(MIKU) jumps,
Princess(KANAMI) "Awakening",
Drinker(MISA) dance,
Gorilla(AKANE) runs wild❗️
BAND-MAID is the best concert❤️
Yes, that smile, from all of them, you can't help but start smiling as well!
It was soooo FAN😝Arigato SENSEI!(teacher)🙏
I would give it multiple thumbs up if I could! Love your reactions and this song is killer! Love it!
As a 4 day old Band-Maid addict, it's refreshing to hear commentators just as aghast as I was when I first heard them play. Who knew the innocent looking gals would kick us listeners in the face the wait they do so skillfully... and I've never enjoyed the abuse so sweetly as I do!
I like this guy
In 2016, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin caught a performance of Band-Maid in Tokyo and asked for a photo-op with their drummer, Akane Hirose. Reportedly he told her that she was like a reincarnation of John Bonham.
For those who don't know, BAND-MAID played in the Classic Rock Awards 2016 and received the Japan Next Generation prize. After the show Jimmy Page, asked Akane for a photo.
I rhink a new Band Maid Fan was born from this video.
I knew as a drummer you totally enjoy this! Yes, Akane does use a double pedal. Misa, btw, uses Black Cloud Custom bass guitars, this one is from the Private Reserve line. Yes, more Band Maid, Please!
Not only the best (imo), but probably the happiest drummer out there! At least I've never seen anyone laugh so much for the entire duration of a concert. And that is highly infectious! 🤭
You need to listen to their new song called Black-Hole, its on their spotify. Akane-47 going rampage on that song! Its a must!
fun fact when they gather around Akane they are usually making faces at her to try and get her to mess up, that they do this at live shows shows how much they trust her, and that they have real fun playing together.
😂
You mentioned MISA using a pick, if you watch in some videos you'll see her switch from pick to slap and back to pick flawlessly
AKANEに注目してくれてありがとうございます。

Thank you for a detailed, interesting and fun, excellent analysis. Right now, the reaction of Band-Maid has been uploaded a lot, but your video is the best :) I have never seen a drummer playing happily like Akane.
Mike, you have quickly become one of my favourite reactors to one of my favourite bands. Love the technical detail mixed with expression of enjoyment. This sort of reaction is the closest thing to re-living (vicariously) the watching of a performance for the first time. Enjoy the rest of the ride - Band Maid and other great Japanese bands.
SO much fun!!
Thank you!! Ultra plus!
Among all the other great things about Band Maid live is their expressions of shere joy. I cannot remember any band that smiled so much and looked if they were enjoying every moment. Kanami has the lovliest smile even when she is rocking hard. Bless them all.
Out of the many many "drum teacher" or "musician reacts" videos there are for Band Maid, you sir actually are giving thoughtful feedback all around. Much appreciated.
Just a FYI Misa plays a Custom Made Black Cloud Bass " Black Smoke" she had them make for her, it looks like a Epiphone SG but its not. She has one that is orange that really looks like a SG but again it is a Bass she had Black Cloud custom make for her.
Dude I learned more about drums with your reactions than most reactors, had to subscribe!
Love how she phrases her solo. It's not what you hear so often a wall of asmanynotesasyoucanfitintotime but a wee bit of a story. Very nice
Band-Maid - Domnation live has also a drumsolo, and the instrumental track "Onset live" is also worth listening.
There are Many-Bands - but only one Band-Maid
You can tell the Maids really like this song, by the way they open up lividly, the lead vocal climb in the lines sends shivers.
Killed it man. Got a new subscriber! Freedom is impressive because of the solo sure, but I promise you will find her amazing talent in every song they do specifically the live ones... along with the entire band are all musically talented. You only scratched the surface on Band Maid! Keep them coming!
Great job. I really enjoyed your comments and insight regarding my favorite Band Maid song. Thank you.
I can always tell when my headphones are on backwards because MISA and Kanami are in the wrong ears.
So all the tracks are mixed the same? Thats pretty cool
The complete concert video shows a number of drum breaks just before the guitar solo. They have really come a long way since I first saw them 6 years ago. I am glad to see it when people really do get it when they see it.
the drum solo part was for the live version only, its not in the regular track. ;)
to answer your question, yes she uses a double bass pedal in her gear.
@Mike Levitsky I know that you are not criticizing MISA (Bassist) for using a guitar pick; however, you might want to check out the live video from 02-14-20 Domination. In this performance she demonstrates what sets her apart from most modern Bassist. Watch her hands between the 2:15-3:00 minute mark and you'll understand the significance of what I mean. She left me speechless when I first saw it.
As always, stay happy healthy and safe. Enjoy.
Thanks, no criticism just an observation
I enjoy this band sooo much. Their individual technique, music compositions, stage presence, each of them sooo beautiful... and those smiles? I love those smiles. Nice reaction. Thx
I'm VERY new to this band, but they legitimately SHRED! I'm hooked!
As most of us, Band-Maid fans, are already in love with this group of remarkable musicians and their music. Your analysis of Akane’s drumming just adds understanding to our appreciation. As others have suggested Renne (the video instead of the live performance) and Manners from their current release are some excellent pieces of music to examine. Enjoy - looking forward to your next analysis.
Love your enthusiasm and insights, Mike. - Just helps me appreciate Band Maid even more. There's around 100 of their songs, and lots of MVs and live performances - so you're just about to take the red pill and fall down the most wondrous musical rabbit hole. You should also check out the Wagakki band. They run with two drummers most of the time - A more traditional kit, + Taiko drums. Their live perfomances give you the best flavour. - Cheers. +1 happy subscriber!
Freedom is always such a fun song/performance. 👏🤗🖤
Thanks Mike!
Domination Live or DICE next dude 👊🤘
10:35 This is an electronic pad ...... it can be used for a lot of different things.
One thing she did use these pads at this concert is for a "Prank" on the rhythm guitar/ backing vocal Miku.
In the middle of a show, Miku always does a "Magic Spell Time" ( A Japanese Maid Cafee gimmick), and the rest of the band goes off stage and take a rest. What Akane and Misa the bassist did was, they sneaked up to the drum set and hit the pads, triggering sampled voices of Miku, interrupting Miku's talk with the audience.
They certainly got a big laugh from the audience.
Sounds like they like to have fun
That's her
Black Cloud MISA Signature Private Reserve "Precision SG Bass".
I am a bass player who knows a bit about playing drums. But your analysis gives me more knowledge about details of what a drum player doing.
Awesome to see you having a blast on this one Mike. You can be pretty serious and critical, so seeing you getting as excited as other musicians to this band is really refreshing ;)
I have no idea what to recommend honestly other than perhaps stick with a few live tracks to see the transitions or maybe MV then live to see how they change up the tracks for live. Any which way, look forward to seeing more of this band on your channel.
I'd been thinking I wanted to start drumming for years, but it was that moment, seeing the joy on Akane's face during her solo clinched it. Got myself my first kit days after seeing this and have been having so much fun.
Been a Maidiac for many years. These ladies rock.
The Japanese Sound engineers are very good. This was part of a DVD, this was close to the end.
I have been into guitar gear since I was a kid. I'm about to purchase a Zemaitis guitar but they are hard to find in British Columbia. I will purchase one from their website this week. Miku has been using them for years. I am mentioning this as many reaction vids comment on their gear but rarely mention Miku's guitars. In this video she is using her "Aces and Eights" guitar which has become quite rare to obtain. I have been looking for one for ages and have been unlucky thus far. Anyways she has been using Zemaitis and has about 7-8 different models. In 2021 they issued the "Flappy Pigeon" which is an homage to Miku!
Their song Rinne will let you see her double bass pedal. Music Video or Live, either one
Two bands that really got me over the last few years were Band Maid and Jinjer!!
Band maid are all-stars at every position! Awesome!
Next one you should react to is Domination live. Same concert and it's a ripping live song
I guess someone may have already recommended Senri Kawaguchi, she is more jazz/fusion and really good. This link gives great shots her playing. ruclips.net/video/vXYTD_JQ0fQ/видео.html
Agree different but a fantastic player her solos are the best, Tamu Marata is up there too - {Nemophila} - she's more with Akane in that rock field.
Akane does use in-ear monitors. I remember her tweeting about being fitted for them a few years ago.
Also, a few years ago, I remember her saying something about being a little intimidated by doing a drum solo.
Yes, we all had the same impression, but in Bochum we were shouting and hoping...and Akane fulfilled our dreams and made a spontanuous solo, as to be seen on some videos. This also may have encouraged her to do more solos during the okyu-ji.
Thanks, I figured she did, but was not sure. You have cleared it up!
Enjoyed the reaction!!! Akane does use Dw 9000 double bass pedals. I remember reading a comment she started using that Zildjian "S" trash fx because the short sustain didn't wash out the vocals. She would hit that on the melodies and her crash for the choruses, but she seems to be using it for everything now!!! Her single stroke rolls are just super clean and even(I wish mine were at least half as good, lol).👍👍🤘🤘🤘
Anyone who puts the time & effort into learning a instrument is good by me :)
@@GaryHolloway-810 🤘🤘🤘
Everything Band Maid does live is good. I suggest ONSET which is an instrumental track when Saiki gets to give her voice a rest. It's pretty dang good live and Akane has a brief spotlight along with everyone else. Kanami writes most of the music and always seems to set it up so everyone gets a bit of a spot to show off. There's an opening on NO GOD from their latest album that starts with Akane really going off you might like to hear. That track is just the music, no video yet. ruclips.net/video/o6ohWYAD4uo/видео.html
Listen to "Alone." As that was one of their first original song that was approved to be put on an album. It's always a song they play in their set because it's special for that reason.
Great reaction/review Mike, really interesting to hear your take on it. Looks like you enjoyed it as much as I did, a gifted drummer indeed.
They did not write this song, it is from the older days when agency guests would write and arrange most of their music (it's amazing how many good songs they got out of that). You can see that this is so easy and comfortable for them, they are just vibing and adding some flavour here and there. Akane obviously has a lot of space to play with the fills, transitions and the solo.
Want double bass? Watch RINNE Official Music Video...
Thanks
Great video Mike. A 30+ year musician here and totally fell down the Band Maid rabbit hole. Another good live video to react to is Onset. They do a 5/4 time sig bridge which is really cool.
During the concert this was in (available on Blu-Ray), during Miku’s “magic time”, Akane and Misa come out and mess with the panel to Akane’s side, and it was doing things like little canned voice clips and such.
(Magic Tine is a quasi intermission where Miku talks to the audience while the rest get a 5-10 minute break.)
A happy spin off from being obsessed with BAND-MAID was the discovery of another killer Japanese band, Sokoninaru, whose drummer is an absolute monster. Technically a support player, Shiyu, has played on their last few records and most recent videos. The drum play-through of the song "kyokugen ha setsuna" is a joy to watch - check it out!
Will do! Thanks Paul
Next live Video? Try "Puzzle"
Saw them live in NYC and after she did her regular solo the rest of the band had her do a encore solo. It was awesome.
Band Maid/Junna wow great start.Just add Lovebites/Asterism and i will be in heaven.
And TRiDENT! Nagisa fills Junna's shoes quite well
@@crackerican69 She does indeed
