Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin caught one of their shows in Japan in 2016 and asked to take a picture with Akane backstage, reportedly saying she's the best drummer he's ever heard.

That's pretty much how my experience went with Band Maid when I discovered them two weeks ago. My only issue is that their earlier albums are hard to get physical copies of (I still like having CDs), I can't find the live Blu-rays anywhere, and I can't find a Band Maid shirt for purchase!

Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements, melodies and High Priestess mediator between the Gods (Band Members) and the masters and princesses (Fans). At 26 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Leader) as Miku calls her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away the persona. Her charisma, performance and voice focus the experience.
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 28 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kurrupo! No, no, no… KURRUPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Naw-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 29 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 29 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumRilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Assassin" - Bass, 27 years old. A sullen, barefoot, dark spirit driving her 5-string bottom-end to hell and back, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Akane is truly the "smilingest" drummer I've ever seen. If I had to describe Band-Maid as a whole with only one word that word would be FUN.
Have you seen Rina from Scandal? She's another sparkly smily drummer.
Scandal are not as heavy as Band-Maid but they are definitely a lot of fun. They've been out from 14 years and still going at it.

I'm a 65 year old bass player who just discovered this band earlier this year...they are the real deal no doubt. BTW... I discovered NIGHTWISH early last year and they have become my favorite current band along with BAND-MAID. 2 completely different bands, but the thing they have in common is that they both "got" me after hearing just 1 song each...I'm am totally into both forever...no regrets on either. 👍
Im a bit behind you on the adventure brother. Though I started in a band in the 70s, show design staging/production was always my passion and I honestly havent been so freaking impressed in years as BAND-MAID and Nightwish. Found them both this last week or so through "reaction" videos RUclips kept recommending. Opera singer reactions? Well, ok RUclips, wth is this all about? lol
Akane Hirose, for me the most creative drummer out there. This is a straight forward rock song with a stunning drum solo but I´m sure you will enjoy even more the complicated drum patterns of their different styles of rock (Band Maid use to blend with mastery funk, prog, pop, hard, jazz or metal, sometimes in the same song!). Try their song Play (live 2020), in their official channel.

This is the most amazing band on the planet. I am a 68 year old former jazz fusion prog rock drummer and this band has reignited my love for music. Akane is one of the most amazing drummers . She is so inventive and wonderful . This is one of their most simple good time rock songs. These girls combine pop punk

Lovebites is power metal wankery. I like them but Tom is right that they aren't very orginal. I LOVE me some Haruna though on the drums. 4'9" is double kick craziness. Her star cymbals hooked me way back in Destrose days. Band Maid is on an entirely different planet (planet awesome) from Lovebites.
PageMonster to be honest, I dont like LB much. Their singer has too much vibrato going on, and I dont really fuck with their vocal melodies. Although the drummer kicks ass and the dual guitar battle is cool, but leaves the bass hanging. BM has a more well rounded sound for ME. I dont hate LB but I cant seem to get into their style tbh.
I think five geniuses are in this band each in their own way.

This concert was recorded on CD. 12 to 14 song set. It's around $30USD but probably worth the get.
When you have listened to the other 30 or 40 songs that are just as good as this, you will understand why we say they are the best rock band on the planet. These girls have mastered the art of rock 'n roll. Po.
About three minutes in you say "I'm in" That is about all the time it took me to be hooked. Thank you for the reaction. This band has saved rock music for me.
Welcome aboard the Band-Maid train. The rhythm section of this band is hands down one of the greatest playing today, no joke. Akane, the drummer, and Misa, the bassist both graduated from the Tokyo school of music. Combined with the lead guitarist in Kanami who herself is a classically trained pianist, who also arranges all their music, and you have what is perhaps the most musically gifted group around when it comes to just pure musicianship.
They're constantly evolving and creating music where just one song can have a half dozen different rifts and beats and change-ups that regular bands would have saved for individual songs all their own. From a pure drumming aspect I'd probably recommend both Blooming and Rinne (both MV versions). From an overall perspective try to check out the live non-acoustic version of puzzle, though it's not that easy to find.
FYI when you see the ladies gather around the drummer and Akane makes a face at them, they're constantly trying to get her to break on stage but the Gorilla of Band-Maid is a human metronome. You mentioned how good she is live, and that's all of them. One of the constants you'll hear and see from fans is you have to react to them Live because they're just that good.
If you are a musician (drummer) yourself and this band is new to you.... listen to "Real Existence" Live 2018 FIRST !!! Then you know what they can do on stage!

Once I've listened and watched all videos of Band Maid, started to watch reactions and I love how they all copy my same experience: Begins with "they are so cute and beautiful" and ends with a "WTF!! They are amazingly talented musicians, I need more!!!"

If you search online you can find a pic of Jimmy Page with Akane, the drummer. He checked out a Band Maid live show in Tokyo and was so impressed with Akane, in particular, that he insisted on getting backstage afterward and getting a pic. Akane thought everyone was pulling her leg when she heard that Jimmy Page wanted to meet her.
Talented musicians that truly enjoy their time together on stage equals an awesome performance. These ladies are world-class already and yet they keep challenging themselves to become better. Everything about this band is inspiring.

In my BEST John McClane voice, "Welcome to the party pal." This is a really good place to start for them. Domination is another banger and each member gets a solo in the live version. Each one of a world class player of their instruments. You hit the nail on the head regarding how much fun they have. They are messing around from the first to the last songs and never seen to get tired. It takes a massive level of skill to play at that level and still be able to goof off. Stick with the live stuff for now but Dice is a super solid MV if you want to see some bass gymnastics.

Almost everyone is upset about having overlooked this band before. you are not alone ! Japan is a huge black hole anyway! For every style of music there is one or more band/s that are outstanding, the individual musicians are perfectly trained and also bring incredible performances live. Try to find a bad song by Band Maid, every song by them has something special, in Hard Rock I don't know anything better than Band Maid at the moment!

Amazing! An incredibly tight group. They have it all. Outstanding vocals phenomenal bass player, guitar playing well beyond most Rockers, and what a great drummer--hats off. They blow away the Rock band here in the Bay Area with their amps in stand by.

They certainly blow "All Girl Bands" from the past (The Runaways, and The Go-Go's) out of the water.
One of their simpler songs, with a great drum solo. They are all excellent musicians (the rhythm guitarist only picked up a guitar when they started the band). You will find a number of their songs have complex bass lines, essentially lead bass line. Also, Akane, the drummer, has great fills. Most songs she varies her fills, so she is not repeating the same patterns. Try the MV for Blooming - You 'll like the gallop on the drums.

Oh definitely. Blooming is amazing. Also fun fact: Kanami(Song writer-Lead guitar) asked Akane (Drummer) To get her speed up for double bass parts. "Blooming" is one song,also another one is "Rinne" where you can see her speed has def gotten faster than her usual. Both have a MV which is probably the best versions atm. There is a "Live" version of Rinne out and about but its chopped up and missing parts due to it being on a talk show. So the MV is your best bet.
Hello from Germany... It´s by far my favorite band right now. I discovered them in the beginning of this year and it saved my year! I mean there are so much things going on! I watched them two times via Online Live-Show and i am stunned! They are so talented and in my opinion the best rock band right now. And they are just getting started... New record label, two anime series are going to have an intro song from them, new single 2nd december, new album beginning 2021. They are "just" 7 years around and have round about 100 songs, absolute workhorses! I am so happy, i found those ladies. I wish them the best and hope they are getting huge, they have really worked for it and totally deserve it, not like many other bands today... I have been obsessed with Band-Maid for close to five years. This is only the tip of the ice berg! They are almost always better live. And yes, one of my fav things about watching them is they are always having a blast playing together.
Just the way your reaction started with ok - adorable, then into the middle of the song you went, wow! I'm in. Yep, I was exactly like you on first watching.

I agree so many bands have lost sight of the fact that Rock 'N Roll (or music in general) is SUPPOSED TO BE FUN!!! It's one thing to take what you do seriously, just don't take yourself seriously. These ladies fully embody this idea.

My 2nd favorite thing about listening to Band-Maid... is people's first time reaction to finally discovering Band-Maid. Akane is a wizard on the drums.
Fun fact though... I read that 4/5 use a clicker to keep tempo. Most good bands do though.

oh my...if you liked (loved) this, you're going to have a loooooooooot of fun with band-maid. this is just the beginning with them. they are so good, individually, and collectively, and have a wide range of music to where, you really get a lot of different fun sounds with them. and as you mentioned, they have a lot of fun on stage with each other. they frequently try to 'break' the drummer, and she never misses a beat, it's great.
side note...someday, might be worth checking out a band called lovebites as well. different sound than band-maid, but very good in their own right. and their drummer is amazing as well. my 2 favorite drummers out there, with akane in band-maid and the drummer from lovebites, haruna.

Some other top female Japanese bands with top draw drummers are Aldious, Doll$Boxx/Gacharic Spin, Lovebites, Mary's Blood and Nemophila.
I've been skimming th comments to see if anybody has already suggested Gacharic Spin or Doll$Boxx. Hana at the drums became an instant favorite of mine, and the new GS drummer Yuri is great, too. (And she smiles a lot!) (There's a great version of "New Stage" where they both play, somewhere on this platform. No idea if it's official, though.) They were my 'in' to Japanese metal, which led me to Band-Maid, too.

@@FourBleats I guess it wasn't official then. That's a pity, especially since "currently available" is quite relative when it comes to Japanese music releases outside of Japan. Especially DVDs.
Band-Maid. My favorite current time period this century band.
Me: old dude. I remember spinning a 45 record listening to the Beatles Paperback Writer. That song is still one of my all-time favorites I guess I need to make a top 100 song list ....but my top two all time favorites for the last 60+ years: Judas Priest and Band-Maid. Yeah I said it I did it. I've bumped Black Sabbath Led Zeppelin AC/DC, I bumped them all down my list to after Band-Maid. Not to mention some other Japanese bands in between all those great other bands. these ladies unbelievable awesome.
Seeing how much fun they're having playing good rock, hard rock is everything That's so many bands today don't express.
Japan is today's rock and roll, for whatever level of hardness you want.

Another older musician here, 53 and I have definitely been around the block more than once in my long career. Speaking directly to the purpose of this particular video though...my last band was a touring Rush tribute band, Distant Signals. So yeah, I know from good drumming. Our drummer simply impressed the hell out of me every time we practiced or performed together. He was our secret weapon. Showed him this video and I swear his jaw was on the floor the whole time.
Thank you sosoSO much for turning me on to this band. I'm also a huge BabyMetal fan and I've introduced myself to several japanese metal girl groups. This is a new one for me. It makes my rock and roll heart swell three sizes this day to see REAL music thriving amidst all the unmitigated crap that's out there right now.

The main thing is live is when they are at their best. Though there are mv to check out as well. And by the way the bass player always kills it. She’s more in the background in this one.

Akane has a signature style with the double bass kick and if the question were phrased is there a better drummer for Band-Maid then l say no even though l know that there are several drummers in Japan and elsewhere who could handle playing decent drums for Band-Maid if some situation dictated it. Ditto for Saiki as well. Does she have the best voice in the world? Probably not but is there a better voice for lead vocals for Band-Maid? The answer is again no. Ditto MISA. The have the raw talent in abundance and then they fit it together like a puzzel. There is never a piece missing. Also l note Band-Maid is far more accessible on many social media platforms by a wide margin over other bands. Even the ones on my playlist. Scandal, Asterism, Isu, Babymetal, BiSH, and Lovebites are good to great bands but l can tell you little about them on a personal interest level. With Band-Maid after you see them in concert you feel like you have had a long friendly talk and you know them. Now you can label it PR or Miku's gift for gab but the connection she makes and maintains with the audience is special. So l look at the whole package. Sacramento loves Band-Maid. Sacramento likes several good bands from Japan.

Yeah, this is my favourite band of the last 15 years or so, and Akane is my favourite drummer, ever. I used to get annoyed that she never got enough facetime in the videos. People would be raving about MISA or Kanami's solos (deservedly so!), but meanwhile Akane's basically playing a solo through the entire song, except not really because everyone else was playing at the same time, which makes it not a solo by default, BUT IT MAY AS WELL BE. She's amazing, and I'm a fanboy even though I'm old.
That was legit, so freaking CRAZY!!! That drum solo was nuts!!! Keep the band maid reactions going, that was fun
