Sad to hear about GFM, if true. I got to see them twice this past summer. They opened for LILIAC twice, and the second show was at The Machine Shop in Flint, MI, an awesome venue with an audience that was pumped and really into the music. I hope all will work out in the end for the ladies...I'll keep the signed BEAUTYCORE baseball shirt.

Actually, I think Guns and Roses had the Warning and Band-Maid open for them. There are pictures of them together in Japan. Band-Maid also wrapped up their US Tour in October, so there's lots of live concert footage to pick from. As Maidiacs, we generally prefer the live videos to the music videos, but, you have a nice, fat catalog of material to pick from.

Just saw them live in NY a few weeks back. They're extremely fun.
Saiki, the singer, was actually tricked into wearing the maid uniform. Didnt know about the concept until she went to their first ever concert and was told "you gotta wear this" before she went on stage.
They sometimes do "theme" concepts that take them outside the maid outfits. A few years ago, for April 1st, they released a new album with a new band name called "Band-Maiko" (Maiko are the teenage girls who train to become geisha) and the album had a new original song called Gion-Cho (has a music video) + multiple of their normal rock songs remixed with traditional Japanese intruments on top, the best of which is "Secret Maiko Lips" which also has a music video. Most reactors do the original "Secret My Lips" + "Secret Maiko Lips" back 2 back to talk about the differences.
Last year they had an online streaming concert (people still couldnt travel to Japan) that was entirely acoustic and they wore some very elegant beige and red type dresses (not maid themed).
in 2023 they're celebrating 10 years, so you have a LOT of content to react to if you wish.
Rinne (music video, the live version is from a dinky tv stage - metal song)
Blooming (music video, pop rock feel with a great drop)
    Onset (live) - instrumental
From now on (music video) - instrumental
    Daydreaming (music video, slow ballad)
There's a ton more, have fun exploring!

The backing singer, Miku, used to work in a Japanese maid cafe. It was her idea to form a rock band whose sound contrasted sharply with what you'd expect from their appearance. They've been at it nearly 10 years, and I doubt the uniforms are going anywhere.

Thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 Band-Maid is one of the best bands in our country, especially in live performance. We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". The history is very long and the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Speaking of hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since as early as 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978), Judas Priest (1978/79) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.)
Uh-oh, we also say "Japan is the country obsessed by Jazz". It had started earlier than rock 😄

Welcome to the Pigeon the Hole that is Band-Maid!! 🕊😂
Your life has just taken a step in an incredibly positive direction by finding Band-Maid! 😀
They are a remarkable collection of five incredible musicians and performers that know few genre limitations and always put a smile on the faces of their audience when performing a “Service”.
They have 100+ fantastic songs and should be playing stadiums all over the world, imho.
They have great MV’s, both studio and live, on their official channel. Next, to see how far they’ve come!
One recommendation is you jump several years forward from this 2014 song “Freedom” to their recent release from last month for
    - “Influencer” - official MV
And their most recent release, the instrumental “From Now On” - official MV. Some top-notch instrumentalists in this band!
The other recommendation, as others will say, you want to see more live performances!
    Check out:
    - “Domination- official LIVE video
I think you’ll like them and be blown away by their talents in composition, arrangement, instrumentation, orchestration, playing and performance and all around joy 🤩
Then dozens more songs - everything is good and many are great!
    Try
    - “Warning” - official MV
    - “Dice” - official MV
    - “After Life” - official MV
    - “Unleash!!!!!” - official MV
    - “Manners / Black Hole” - official live video
    - “No God” - official live video
    - “Sayonkadori” - official acoustic live video
    - “Real Existence” - official LIVE video
    - “Puzzle” - official live / live acoustic
The list goes on and on and on…I’d stick to the official videos until you get a fuller understanding and appreciation for the band before diving into the fan videos - the round quality is lacking on many of them so they’d color your perception of their sound quality.
And then there’s their arch enemies “Band-Maiko” 😂

Sorry, but he didn't say she's a reincarnation of Bonham. At least neither he nor Akane have confirmed it. The fact that he thinks she's a damn good drummer is cool enough.
      Rumors are inherently dubious.
Just take the reputation in my hometown that I'm great in bed. Can it be trusted? Doubtful as I'm the one who first spread it. ;)

The talent of these girls has been commented upon, but hard work has also played a big part of it.
    - Miku did not start learning guitar until after she formed the band. Kanami coached her, and says that Miku practices every day.
    - The songs that Kanami wrote were all rejected by the recording company management for three years. But she persevered and now most of the band’s songs are written by her.
    - When Akane first joined the band, she had never used double foot pedals. She had to learn because Kanami’s songs called for them. Akane also had to work her tail off to increase her drumming and foot pedal speed, because Kanami wrote faster and faster songs. (In an interview with a British musician, Kanami asked what his band’s fastest song was, and she set herself the goal of writing a song at that speed - 275 BPM. Another challenge for Akane!)

No apologies necessary for pausing and rewinding. WE come here to hear your observations. Well most of us do. There are some who just come to hear the Ladies, but the rest of us know, if we wanted to hear and see the video we can go to the Ladies page. The rest of us want to hear your thoughts, are you hearing something or seeing something that maybe we have missed? We like that kind of input from reactors.
And the Ladies started adding drum solos after touring in europe and the US, the audience's demanded them. So the LAdies responded. Now the Japanese fans want the drum solos as well.
For your next song by the Ladies, if you want to go in the order the songs were performed in this concert, the next video would be "Choose Me - Official Live", the "Wonderland - Official Live Video", followed by "Play - Official Live Video" and "Domination - Official Live Video"
Most other reactors would usually go with Domination as it is an extremely high energy song that IS NOT a Pantera Cover. It is also the 22nd song from a 23 song setlist. And the Ladies were just as high energy in Domination as they were in Freedom.
Now for PART of what I call the Band-Maid Information (Info) Dump file. (I will post the rest of the file after someone/anyone posts a reply to this comment so the Tube of You's doesn't remove it.

      @greylocke100 Год назад +3

      @@Studio-Coast_Kid Thankee Sir,
      Now for what I term the Band-Maid Info-Dump;
      -start file-
Band Maid was started in 2013 by Miku Kobato. At the time she had just left the Idol Group, Lil Cumin and she didn't like the type of music she had been performing. She approached her management agency with the idea of making an actual band playing rock music but dressed as maids. She had worked in a Maid Cafe and thought the image of maids playing rockin music would create what she called "The Gap" between what you see and what you hear. The Management company was like Ok, go ahead.
Miku then looked around and found Kanami a singer/songwriter who was posting her own videos on the internet. Miku had her agency contact her and Kanami thought the idea was cool and agreed to join. Miku then asked if Kanami knew a drummer who might be interested. Kanami had worked with Akane in the past and there is 2 versions of this, the first is, Kanami literally walked over to Akane's apartment and asked her, the second is Kanami called Akane and asked her. (Akane has said in 2 different interviews that 1: Kanami called her and asked if she could come over and 2: in a second interview Kanami just came over) Akane was actually hesitant as she had worked in an "All Girl Group" before and didn't enjoy it as it wasn't the type of music she wanted to play. After hearing a Demo, Akane was like ok, but was still slightly hesitant because of the "Maid Outfits", but she agreed to give it a try. Akane was asked if she knew a bass player and she had gone to Tokyo School of Music with MISA and had worked a couple of jobs with her. So Misa was contacted and after she heard a demo she was like I like the music, but she also was hesitant about the "Maid Outfits", but she relented and joined in as she really wanted to play the kind of music she heard in the demo. The 3 of them then "Auditioned" for the record company and passed the audition.
Now we have the "Core" members. The 4 members worked out some songs provided for them by the record company, and a setlist and they had performed 3 times with just Miku on main vocals. Miku after those performances felt that her voice wasn't powerful enough to really perform the songs she wanted. So she approached her management company again and asked if they had any singers who weren't in other projects. They then auditioned several singers. Miku heard Saiki rehearsing in a room across the hall and asked if she could be auditioned, the record company then had Saiki audition.
Saiki was signed to the same management company and had done some work as a backup singer and dancer and was asked if she would be interested in auditioning for this new group which currently had 4 members and she would be the fifth. She had been a member of a group with 8 other people as a backup singer and dancer, and HATED it. So she listened to the demo and thought "Cool" because she liked the music.
Now we come to the tricky part. Miku KNEW that if Saiki was told about the "Maid Outfits" she would say NO WAY!, so they didn't tell her. They told her they would have "Cool/cute Clothes"(I've read it translated either way), and she never met Miku until a few days before they had a contracted performance. She wasn't told about the "Maid Outfits" until the day before the performance, and she had considered backing out, but she had signed the contract. (Saiki also had NEVER met Miku until then as well)
So the Ladies, went and did the performance and Saiki really, REALLY liked the crowds reaction and the music they were performing. She DIDN'T like the apron she wore so it got ditched after the first performance.
And you now have the beginnings of the BEST LIVE HARD ROCK BAND in the WORLD!
      ALL HAIL BAND MAID!!!!!
Now that we have the Full band, it was felt that there needed to be a second guitar. Saiki was like, "Not Me, No Way." So Miku said, "I'll do it.", at first that was literally all she did, was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane said, if you are going to hold it, you NEED to learn to play it. And Miku said, "Ok.", and Kanami started to teach Miku how to play. The Ladies released their first album in 2014 "Maid in Japan" which failed to chart, but later after "Thrill" it was reissued and charted to #26 in Japan.

Then in 2015 they released "New Beginning"
On New Beginning was the song that changed Band Maid's entire existence. "Thrill"...
The band was getting ready to release their first music video and the choice was between "Love, Passion, Matador" and "Thrill" and the ladies chose Thrill. (Little known fact, Miku helped with the lyrics on Thrill but did not get credited)
This became the seminal moment of Band Maid. Because their second album charted at #64, the record company was seriously considering disbanding the Ladies and switching them to other projects. (In fact they had Kanami and Akane work with Mochi to Cheese thinking that when Band Maid cratered they could use them in another band. MISA had also just started working with Mochi to Cheese as well). However about 6 months after the video's release, a Facebook page "JRock Radio" posted the video to their timeline. And the video went viral. Having over a million views in just a few short weeks. The Ladies Twitter page got so many hits they thought their page had been hacked. Their RUclips channel also started getting more and more subscribers and views to Thrill.
Now the ladies knew where their fans wanted them to go. Harder Rock, less pop. And history was Maid.
      -end file-
If there is any other information you may wish to know, please feel free to ask. I may not know the answer, but within the Band-Maid Maidiac Community, someone is bound to know.

As a prolific watcher of band-Maid reaction videos, one thing strikes me every time: if the reviewer has a speciality, Band-Maid seem to be particularly enjoyed. The reviewer singers are struck by the vocals and harmonies, the drummers are dumbfounded by Akane, the guitarists are gobsmacked by Kanami and the bassists... just want to go back to their day job when they watch and hear Misa. I'm almost glad I can't play a note to save my life because I can enjoy every little detail of Band-Maid, smile and feel happy, and just look forward to the next marvel.

These ladies are sooo amazing. They exemplify Japanese virtues of hard work, teamwork, humility and politeness. This comes out in many interviews that you can find on RUclips.
    - In Thrill, Misa does a brief bass solo just before Kanami’s guitar solo
    - Saiki had to have surgery on her throat at one point, but she recovered and is singing stronger than ever
    - Miku and Saiki have a regular radio slot in Japan called BandMaid Nippon. You can see clips of it on RUclips with English subtitles. In it, Miku is almost like a comedian with Saiki serving as her “straight man.”
    - The girls each use just one costume until it wears out, and they personally hand wash them after each show.
    - Miku has cultivated the habit of saying “po” at the end of each sentence. It imitates the sound of a pigeon, which is thought to be “kuru-po” in Japan just as dogs are thought to go “bow-wow” in English speaking countries. This is a play on words because her surname Kobato means “small pigeon.” She jokes that the band consists of four human beings and one pigeon.
    - Miku uses a lacrosse ball and a golf ball to massage herself because of the muscular tension she gets from playing.

I had the pleasure and privilege of hearing this song in Houston and about a week later in New York. These girls are the real deal. The fan cams from the US tour reveal that even with iPhone audio in the crowd the live sound is spectacular. The suggestions are all valid. The music book for the last album is symphonic. So many layers. You could try the live Domination or an instrumental like Onset or From Now On. I got sucked into this group a few years ago with their breakthrough song Thrill which was apparently a gamble by the record company who was about to drop them. It went viral and the rest is history. In retrospect Thrill is pretty simple stuff compared to now but the bass solo leading to guitar solo (which is standard for them) sold it. Love them. Great reaction. Keep up the good work.

I don't know if you're still checking this, but here goes:
Their first works had more or less powerpop-rock approach and songs by writers supplied by their management team and approved by the recording company. As they gained some popularity, they (principally Miku Kobato with the red rose, rhythm guitarist) negotiated more and more artistic freedom, and played more heavy more often.
"Freedom" was their first recorded song with all lyrics by Miku (second guitarist on Zemaitis, second vocalist, red rose) instead of an outside writer. It did have an outside composer.
"Alone" off the same album was their first recorded song with both lyrics and music by the group, Kanami (lead guitarist on PRS) as lead composer. That was their breakthrough with their management and recording companies, and they have written almost all their own material ever since.
Miku and Kanami had been negotiating and submitting material and being turned down. Here, the ice broke.
All of which relates to the underlying meaning of Freedom. The lyrics put it in very personal terms; essentially saying "I will be and do what I choose, and you can walk with me and support me in it, or you can go away." It is at once defiant and triumphant, light and joyful and yet kickass rock.
And these characteristics kinda describe the band. They can play slammin' heavy and yet agile and elegant and complex and nuanced all at once. Like, check out their instrumental "From Now On" which was recent. If you like this, you will love that.
There is a lot of fun "lore" with this group. To help understand some of the comments, you need to know:
Miku Kobato is a stage name, to separate her hard rock/prog rock Band-Maid persona from her earlier work as actress and pop-idol trio member in "Li'l Cumin." Kobato means literally "small pigeon" which is what we call a dove. Its number in Japanese numerology is 810, so she says that inside, she is really a perpetually 810 year old pigeon. And in Japan, the dove is said to say "karrupo" and so she says that occasionally and punctuates her speech with "po" frequently. Pigeon talk. Po!

-to add to the above statement, i really don’t like to bring up this time in my life anymore but when i was at my lowest, every time WITHOUT FAIL, that i had a suicidal thought, their song Carry On Living would play, not once or twice, but over a dozen times. Spot-on everytime. Like clockwork. Uo until one night i had a knife to my neck for almost an hour out of indecisiveness and was begging for a sign that this was a coincidence when Carry On Living played again, like it had been, but i wasnt convinced yet. About to slide the knife at the end of that song. I heard something i recognized. Carry On Living had managed to play Two times in a row.
(On Spotify, this is already basically impossible. But even more so considering the song is only listed on the entire website catalog ONE TIME. Literally not possible.)
It was a miracle. I thank Band-Maid and God every day that im no longer in that pit and my life has gone nowhere but up ever since.

The basic rule of Rock. Dare to be bigger than life. Dare to be loud. Remember that Rock should be filled with energy. As a bonus, let the band members practice to be really competent. Preferably to the levels that they can play flamboyantly upon request. Have an excellent primary songwriter that understands what a good hook is while surprising us with originality. And practice enough to be tight. Have a really solid rhythm section between drums bass and rhythm guitar that really understands drive, pace and syncopation to the point that they can make straight 4/4 sound both polymetric and polyrhythmic upon will. Have a lead vocalist that comes with identity in their voice. Add to this one of the most unique lead guitars (from the composer) on stage currently (at times she can sound so idiosyncratic that she reminds me of an early and angry Prince on stage. Like someone brought up with jazz, soul and blues that suddenly got VERY aggressive when given a guitar.
Band Maid is all this and more. Because hidden in the middle with a (now) competent rhythm guitar and second vocals we find Miku. The effing heart of this group of singular talents working as one. I think everyone that has taken the Band Maid journey has had the same discovery. She is more than this peculiar and talkative pigeon (PO!). The Christmas concert from two years ago when she did "Sayonakidori" acoustically blew all my emotional defences into space.
Have a jolly good ride on this journey @Strongdad

The rhythm Guitarist (Miku) and founder was originally the Lead singer but she felt that she didn't have the power to drive the kind of music they wanted to do, she still does at least one song as lead vocals on each album and she is the heart and soul of the band, she does a "Storytime" at live gigs to give Seiki (Lead singer) a break, usually this is followed by one of her songs and/or an instrumental.
She learnt the Guitar from scratch when the band formed and has turned into a more than competant rhythm guitarist and if you want to see her vocals you can look at the Acoustic of sayonakidori on their channel.

Two things you'll notice as you get into them more - they're all outstanding at what they do, and there's no big ego as they all give each other opportunities to strut their stuff in different tracks, with solos, or solos with a light backing.
Overall, they're what I would call hard-driving rack, but with influences ranging from funk, jazz, thrash, blues, even hints of country.

Continue the ride and you will get your 'even a bass solo' , and another one, and another one, and another one - I think you get my drift. You may even get your Warning and Band Maid wish too, they follow each other on social media and they were able to meet after their performances at Aftershock recently, videos of the meeting are around.
