I think she's definetely one of the most creative rock-drummer out there. Band Maid has become something of a musicians band. They always have plenty of interesting new stuff for their fans. They are also cheeky about the whole maid café image. Lots of fun.
Probably their best quality is that no matter how complex each member plays or the switches in timing (or layers of timing) each member is completely respectful of the other's space. They don't play over each other. Each member is very easily distinguishable at any given point. With (all) they do its never too much.
You just won mi like when you like the quiet part of the drums and just the guitar sounding a great drummer knows when to play and when not and that is awesome
Thank you for the informative reaction. While it is obvious why folks would push for review of the song Freedom because of short drum solo,, My personal opinion is other songs like Alone and Blooming and Rinne offer overall more interesting tasty drumming bits. But be warned, this will all seem sedate compared to the drumming in some other songs on the new album -- songs such as No God and Black Hole.
I can't agree more with you on their track 'Alone'. I've noticed that a lot of comments are recommending fast songs, but fast doesn't always mean it's the best or most interesting.
Akane uses a double bass pedal with her single bass drum because she prefers an efficient kit as opposed to lots of gear she might only use once in a while. She also likes to keep it easier to be closer to her band mates when they come to say “hi” during a song.💪🏻🤘🏻
Jimmy page caught them live in Tokyo, and did a photo with Akane, basically calling her New Jon Bonham. Love Band Maid. Ak-kahnay. Akane does use double pedal.
Steve Terrenberry describes this beat as "Boot-camp, booty-camp." It makes a strange kind of sense. In the members section of their official website, there is a "making of" video for this PV. The pyro scene surprised me in a couple of ways. First, they were closer to the pyro that I had expected; I thought the close appearance in the PV was a camera trick. Secondly, the ladies didn't flinch when the pyro went off despite there being a pretty big boom from it.
Definitely the recent MV for "Manners" (for a bit of a change of pace - more groove), or, for a live performance, "Domination" from Feb 14, 2020. I've got my ticket to their upcoming live online show. Can't wait!
Nope. Listen to how she says it herself. There are several videos and recordings of the band introducing themselves in interviews. Here is one of the earliest. She clearly says "nay". ruclips.net/video/jPy139HdQ50/видео.html&feature=emb_title
very fun and informative! i dont have music knowledge but i always find Akane's drum exciting like before i didnt care about drums but now i do so much. Maybe is that hand to foot work and her triplets fill with her bass drum metal sound she somtimes does i dont know
In videos that focus the camera more on Akane, you can really see just how loose yet controlled her form is. The stamina she is able to muster for some of their songs is crazy.
Awesome drumming analysis. Loving how you dissect the various parts and time beats. Her drumming is complex and creative and very fitting for her bands music genre
One of the best reactions on RUclips. It would be great of you can talk a bit more about things like time signature as as well. Freedom is good, but it's an old song which is not written by them, their record company gave them little control over their music at that time but it's a fun song to perform for them. How about something more groovy and new after? the new MV Manners or Gion cho is a totally different vibe.
Great to see a drummer review appreciate The Maids talents. Yes Akane really is a superb drummer. One of the most outstanding on the planet. Her speed here is indeed frenetic and spot on. Shows all of that gifted talent developed further when she attended the music academy in her formative years with Misa on bass. Akane is the highlight in this song. Every other member has their moments from Kanami's solo to Saiki's magnificent vocal and Miku's contrasting backing vocal (Misa's always great) but Akane's skill stands out here. Look forward to the next review. Not many drummers react to Band Maid.
awesome reaction i love seeing musicians geek out over band maid :) after freedom for the solo.. i would recommend Daydreaming for a change of pace but no less skill
Hell Yeah Mike! I caught your first BAND-MAID video and loved it. You arent doing the boring "reactor" thing but actual educational reviews. Im not even a drummer and learning a lot from you. I discovered BAND-MAID only a few months ago and wow. Love them and belief that rock isn't dead after all! Really stoked you are getting in to them and looking forward to learning more about why Akane is getting so much buzz with the drummers.
All five are fantastic, but I really think the drummer and lead guitar are the real musical geniuses of the band. Although the bass is also constantly switching styles. There's always something interesting going on with the bass, guitar and the drums. It's never just a regular song. They're always switching it up and adding something extra. Every song is a treat.
Akane uses the double pedal kick bar, on her reg.kit almost obsessively, she had two kick drums previously but finds this style more compact, love how she breaks down her drumming song arrangement, + builds it up again within the meter, she goes into half time, from a fast pace then doubles up on the return, the drop down effect almost teasingly, giving the drums loads of dynamics, thanks for your reaction.
I’d be really interested to hear your take on some of Band-Maid’s slower or more groovier songs, ones that don’t have Akane pushing the pedal to the metal, so to speak. Try “Bubble” or “Daydreaming”!
Awesome reaction, their rhythm section is really something else. Freedom is a good song as well to analyze the drumming and I'm sure you're getting a lot of suggestions so to keep it simple I would just suggest Onset as I like the drumming in that one a lot but they have a lot of interesting songs so you really can't wrong with them. Anyway keep up with the nice reviews they're are very entertaining and insightful.

Check out their MV for Manners. That's gonna hit you with a 70s groove rock vibe. From the tones to the vocals, the song sounds straight out of the 70s.
Mr. Levitsky, There's a special edition of the new Unseen World album that includes a Blu-Ray that includes instrumental videos of each member of the band who plays an instrument focused exclusively on them for the songs After Life, No God, Giovanni, and an instrumental exclusive to the Blu-Ray, Without Holding Back. You may find that to be better source material for Band-Maid reactions from this album.
You are correct about the base drum . Akane plays a double pedal and double strikers on one base drum. I have listened to other songs that have an incredibly fast double base sound which I think is because the strikers are on the same drum. There is an interview out there with her showing her drum set and the double striker setup.
React to YOYOKA next. (Japanese female drummer) The Ellen Show (TV) invited her twice. She appeared as a guest drummer in concerts such as Cyndi Lauper's and Fall Out Boy's. Robert Plant and Ian Paice react to her in youtube.
Pronunciation is ah-con-neigh rather than awk-on-neigh (Start with an “ah” rather than an “awk” and you got it. :). Another great reaction! Thanks! Looking forward to the next one. When watching Freedom you will see she wears a smile unlike any other drummer I have seen.
@@donaldholden2090 I don't have any experience with Japanese other than anime(lol), so this could be a stupid question, but do typical western emphases apply to such pronunciation? IDK but while AH-ka-ne definitely sounds wrong, so does ah-KA-ne. Perhaps it's because speaking with an American accent, my "drawl" would make either case sound waayyy to emphasized. Like it's too easy for the second one to accidentally sound like ah-KAWH-ne spending too long in the middle. When I view it as just ah-ka-ne then I can say it correctly! For comparison I'm just thinking back to how English reading of "Mikasa" or "Sakura" can sound wrong no matter where a stress goes, but in Japanese I vaguely remember each syllable being the same quick speed.
@@tremapar The trick to it is to make the emphasis 1)slight, and 2) one of raising the volume (and, even more slightly, the pitch), _without_ any lengthening.
Akane used to play a 4 piece kit in Band-Maid's earlier days. She does use Dw 9000 double pedals. This kit isn't the one she normally uses, possibly an older one or even a rental for the video. I don't recognize the full length lugs from any series from Tama produced recently. She amazes me by how she makes her kit sound bigger than it is!!! Great reaction!!!👍👍🤘🤘🤘
Even in the early stuff she was creative. Go back and check out "Real Existence." That was only the 3rd song I heard from them, but THAT was the ONE. She constantly is changing things up inside each section. She just won't sit down into one groove and let it just be. But at the same time she strives to support the rest of the band and never overwhelms them. And YES, it is double pedals. She just talked about how she is up to 220 bpm on the feet. Last album it was 190. And poor little old me can barely do 140 after two years of running. biking, leg lifts and tons of sit ups.
Loved your review of Band-Maid, which brought me here. Could you please react to an amazing Japanese jazz/prog drummer, Senri Kawaguchi - she is unbelievable! Cheers from Toronto.
Good assessment of Akane’s drumming.Akane has really good technique. (A-kaa-neh).Let’s the wrists do the work. Helps her so much with the speed and I believe reduces the risk of cramping in the forwards. She definitely plays double bass in most songs but wouldn’t surprise if just used the single as well. She’s a very good female drummer. Trained with Misa on bass at a music academy. The whole band is highly talented. I recommend watching Onset in 2018. It has a few challenging sections where she needs to mix up small fills to keep in tune with the irregular tempo. Great tapping from Kanami and the lighting is a highlight. They’re probably the best female live band. Technically tight as ever rhythm section. Other songs are Real existence,Don’t you tell me,Turn me But interested in your view of ONSET. Just a another of Kanami’s great compositions. 1 in a million gifted musicians.
Akane Hirose does use a double peddle setup, she uses a DW 9002 Double Pedal. here is a page that shows all her main equipment, NOT including the electronics she uses for keying in backing tracks and various sound effects. equipboard.com/pros/akane-hirose
Her main kit is a Custom Tama Star Bubinga. She’s a Tama artist. She used to be a Sakae Drums artist. This is her travel/stunt kit. She’s also a Zildjian artist among others.

Wonderland is also brilliant, though it's slow.
Thank you. You add so much to listening and appreciating BM
Loving the breakdown. Akane's drumming is what got me hooked into Band Maid.
Band Maid just released a live video from their online performance of this song 'Warning!'
Great reaction! Learn so much from these pro's. Amazing what you guys can hear that us amateurs don't notice.
Man, you gotta react to freedom - live
It’s coming out soon
Awesome! I am so thrilled with the response you’re getting! Way to go!
yes great to hear your comments. For me they are tight and complex and pull it off great - no mistakes that I can hear.
Definitely the recent MV for "Manners" (for a bit of a change of pace - more groove), or, for a live performance, "Domination" from Feb 14, 2020. I've got my ticket to their upcoming live online show. Can't wait!
0:33 - Ah Kah Nay
Yeah, I love her intermediate use of the double kick.
Nope, not "Nay". It's more like "ne" in "never".
Nope. Listen to how she says it herself. There are several videos and recordings of the band introducing themselves in interviews. Here is one of the earliest. She clearly says "nay".

@@danwiesdamageinc The video shows exactly what I said. But if you hear something else, ok!
@@NeKHamasaki You need your ears checked.
@@danwiesdamageinc I'm not trying to be rude here. I speak japanese and trust me, there's no "ee" sound in there.
Really enjoyed your analysis and reaction. Hope you take some time to enjoy the rest of the composition at your leisure! Cheers.
very fun and informative! i dont have music knowledge but i always find Akane's drum exciting like before i didnt care about drums but now i do so much. Maybe is that hand to foot work and her triplets fill with her bass drum metal sound she somtimes does i dont know
Love the breakdown - would love to hear more on Akanes drumming.
I am looking forward to the freedom reaction :P
One of the best reactions on RUclips.
It would be great of you can talk a bit more about things like time signature as as well.
Freedom is good, but it's an old song which is not written by them, their record company gave them little control over their music at that time but it's a fun song to perform for them.
How about something more groovy and new after? the new MV Manners or
Gion cho is a totally different vibe.
音楽、ドラムの解説を楽しみにしてます。
BAND-MAID、よろしくです❗😊
Great to see a drummer review appreciate The Maids talents. Yes Akane really is a superb drummer. One of the most outstanding on the planet. Her speed here is indeed frenetic and spot on. Shows all of that gifted talent developed further when she attended the music academy in her formative years with Misa on bass. Akane is the highlight in this song. Every other member has their moments from Kanami's solo to Saiki's magnificent vocal and Miku's contrasting backing vocal (Misa's always great) but Akane's skill stands out here.
Look forward to the next review. Not many drummers react to Band Maid.
awesome reaction i love seeing musicians geek out over band maid :)
after freedom for the solo.. i would recommend Daydreaming for a change of pace but no less skill
Really stoked you are getting in to them and looking forward to learning more about why Akane is getting so much buzz with the drummers.
she posted a short clip on twitter back in may of her practicing some, it shows her pedal work for the song "Screaming"
Wonderland the Live video also has amazing drumming.
I'm so glad that you noticed Akane long drum roll.. 🤣🤣.. I think you're the only reactor that mention it! Nice.. subscribe!! 🥰🥰🥰
I'm sure it's been said already... but check them live!!
super reaction, super drum analysis ..waiting for "Freedoom"
Love Band Maid.
You’ll love the whole album, black hole is awesome!
hello🙋♂️
nice reaction👍I have enjoy time‼️
thank you for giving me an eazy-to-understand reaction to Goddess Akane's drum skill⤴️
I'd like other BAND-MAID songs,too💥
楽しみにしてます⤴️⤴️⤴️
Check out their MV for Manners. That's gonna hit you with a 70s groove rock vibe. From the tones to the vocals, the song sounds straight out of the 70s.
What's next? Of course "Onset" Band-Maid, this is a great song. You must react it. I am waiting
(Japanese female drummer)
The Ellen Show (TV) invited her twice.
She appeared as a guest drummer in concerts such as Cyndi Lauper's and Fall Out Boy's.
Robert Plant and Ian Paice react to her in youtube.
Or Junna or Dainashi or Senri
Best explosion this year in a MV!
To bad you found Band maid so late . Akane watched reaction videos during the shutdown. I have a feeling she might be a little busy now a days.
All of these things. Also, place the emphasis on the second syllable. "a-KA-ne"
@@tremapar The trick to it is to make the emphasis 1)slight, and 2) one of raising the volume (and, even more slightly, the pitch), _without_ any lengthening.
new subscriber here mike, love your technical explanation on drumming. refreshing to hear
Once again.. Another nice reaction and analysis sir, thank you.. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Blooming is a really good song as well.
When she plays live she has a double pedal on the bass drum.
Loved your review of Band-Maid, which brought me here. Could you please react to an amazing Japanese jazz/prog drummer, Senri Kawaguchi - she is unbelievable! Cheers from Toronto.
She does have a double pedal. She bought it at the L. A. Guitar Center the first time they came to the U. S.
Other songs are
Real existence,Don’t you tell me,Turn me
But interested in your view of ONSET.
Just a another of Kanami’s great compositions.
1 in a million gifted musicians.
New subscriber! Thanks for your insights!!!
just an adjustment. Akane's name use a short 'e'. ;)
glad you got to listen to more of their music! subbed to hear more of your commentary!
Really enjoyed this vid!👍
Akane Hirose does use a double peddle setup, she uses a DW 9002 Double Pedal. here is a page that shows all her main equipment, NOT including the electronics she uses for keying in backing tracks and various sound effects. equipboard.com/pros/akane-hirose
Akane watches these reactions on RUclips. She said it in an interview. So, maybe she did or will watch yours someday. 😀
Her main kit is a Custom Tama Star Bubinga. She’s a Tama artist. She used to be a Sakae Drums artist.
This is her travel/stunt kit.
She’s also a Zildjian artist among others.
Live official performances of Freedom and Turn me on, would be fun for you to break down. Blooming for a official music video is a cornerstone of the band.
