    Great and helpful stuff as always, Ken!
    After working with my 300D for about 20 years, and basically never taking it out of full auto, I decided it was time to actually learn how to take pictures. On the advice of a good friend in the UK who is a superb photographer, I picked up a used 20D and 7D and a couple of decent lenses, and set myself the task of watching RUclips tutorials on the triangle and other fundamentals. Once I got comfortable with that, and decided that Av was my preferred mode, I decided to treat myself to a 60th birthday present: A used 1DX Mark III. This camera is complete overkill for someone like me, but I don't care about that. I love the camera. It's built like a tank, and for whatever reasons I've found it easier to learn than were the 20D and 7D.
    The industry's move to mirrorless is something I don't care about, since I've got a fair amount of money invested in cameras and lenses now. This hardware is more than enough for me, and with the move to mirrorless, I seem to have a lot of options now for reasonably-priced used EF lenses, so that's a great advantage too.

    I used to have 28-135, but couple days ago changed to the legendary EF 35-135 f/3.5-.4.5. Haven't tested it properly yet, but at first glance It seems sharper, more nicely built and, of course, brighter. It goes f/3.5 up to 70mm, then f/4 up to 100. Sure, I really miss IS, but anyway... What do you think?

      @PaulKretz 3 года назад

      @@KenRockwellTV No. It was produced between 1988 and 1990 and it is said that only ~1000 copies were made. Although, many experienced photographers claim it's actually of L series picture quality! Unlike its twin - EF 35-105 f/3.5-4.5, which was a simple kit lens of those times. On the outside they look 99% the same. I currently have both and will test soon. Just thought you might know them...

    I will probably be able to afford one in 2027/28, but I doubt that I still want one by then, looking at the rapidly improving mirrorless system cameras.
    2020 has probably been the last year that Canon and Nikon release new DSLR camera's. Only Pentax will remain (Ken, I hope that you're going to review the announced Pentax K3-III in 2021, possibly the best APS-C DSLR).

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  3 года назад

      @@KenRockwellTV I like 1980's tech lol!
      Nahh I don't agree with you. I own DSLR's of the classic big three (Canon, Nikon and Pentax). Pentax / Ricoh no doubt is nowadays a small camera brand, but what they release is actually usually good up to excellent. E.g. the Pentax KP is a solid APS-C DSLR with very well designed ergonomics (you should review one!). Certainly not like the poor 1980's ergonomics of Fujifilm lol. The upcoming K1-III is a serious competitor for the Canon EOS 90D and Nikon D500 (okay, that's more like 2015 technology). Pentax has one of the best (and most expensive!) 50mm and 85mm primes. It looks like they are going to stick to their pentaprism and mirror. They try to create their own niche, just like Leica and Fujifilm. That may or may not work out for them financially in the long run. It's certainly a camera maker that should not be ignored.

    These batteries go flat disappointedly quickly in this mark 3. They even loss charge just sitting in the camera, but you suggest at the beginning of you video that they would last all day. It's one of the big disadvantages of this camera.

      one major custom function, in my opinion anyway, in manual mode (photo and video), you can change manual metering mode to spot focus - which enables the camera to retain its exposure despite varying ambient changes.
      The R5 can not do this.
      Set it to manual mode, and the metering mode defaults to "evaluative" and you cannot change it. So, if the sun comes out during your staged shot, your image will get over-exposed (or vice-versa).
      That's huge if you're serious about exposure and lighting a scene.

    Canon 1dx iii is great camera but the old EF mount .
    I hope canon will release soon R1.
    This camara is great for 1dx ii owners
    But if I was owning the 1dx ii i would whit for Canon R1..
    I have Canon 250d great camara for pictures .🙃

    • @mikewinburn
      @mikewinburn 3 года назад

      i thought that too, but preferred to dive in with iii, and consider the R1 in the 2nd, or possibly the 3rd generation - i'll let everyone else be the beta testers :)
      So the HUGE jump in quality from the 1DX to 1DX3 will likely be matched in the potential quality jump from R1 to R1-iii.
      By then, i'll have gotten my money's worth on the 1DXiii :)
      But, yeah, i understand the train of thought for sure.

    Without doubt the last camera of the 1D series.
    Canon seems to have abandoned the development of new full frame EF mount lenses.
    So the buyers of the 1DX mark III will rely only on older lenses.

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  3 года назад +4

      Guess what: Canon already makes everything we need in EF, the broadest and most complete line of lenses in the history of photography. We don’t need anything else. Thanks!

    • @AgnostosGnostos
      @AgnostosGnostos 3 года назад

      Ken Rockwell That's totally correct for the present technology of lenses. But what about the future?
      Most RF mount lenses are better optically or smaller and lighter than similar EF mount lenses. Of course the variety of RF mount lenses is very poor.
      Thank you for the reply.
