    OMG you're an expert camera angel. I'm going to a concert shoot today and your tutorial is going to be used. I am getting ready to change those settings i currently have and now I'm excited to see the difference. I do believe that I do exceptional with photography but with these tips OMG I should be pretty much perfect. The way you explain is not confusing, it makes good clear sense and I'm able to follow what you are saying. NO WONDER you have that beautiful camera in hand......LOL......can't wait to listen to other videos you have done, would love to work with you.

    I have a Panasonic GH5 as well and I love that you can expand the focus zone with the same control that handles the aperture. It's great. You can just toggle the zone really small to large and the little squares on the LCD get farther apart. Wish my 1dx mark iii had that.

      Unfortunately David never gives the full answer to a question. If you are shooting a sporting event you would use zone focusing and most likely case 2. See the Peter Read Miller's demo using actual pictures from a live football game, ruclips.net/video/5EHx_tZLCjQ/видео.html. Skip to 3:15 of the video if you don't want to watch the whole thing. Case 2 is found in the Canon 1dx mark iii white paper: Case 2 - Continue to track subjects, ignoring possible obstacles
      Reduced Tracking Sensitivity… camera will tend to “lock-on” to an initial moving subject, and
      if there’s an interruption or sudden change during AI Servo AF, resist changing to new
      subjects.

    • @DavidBergmanPhoto
      @DavidBergmanPhoto 4 года назад +1

      Yea, I've been doing this a long time. But with a 400 or 600mm lens on a moving subject, it's not easy to stay right on the face! The slight expansion helps a lot.

    • @DavidBergmanPhoto
      @DavidBergmanPhoto 4 года назад

      Raymond Wright I personally don’t like zone focus because then the camera focuses on whatever is closest. If someone is running, then it is more likely to pick up their arm when it goes in front of their body, instead of staying on the face. With the mark 3, I am beginning to trust the face / head detection, but with any other camera, I would use the af expansion. I delve a bit deeper into what the case modes do in an earlier video: www.askdavidbergman.com/20190227-sports-focus/

      @@DavidBergmanPhoto since you were making reference to the 1DX Mark 3, the focus is even more exact. I haven't used any camera in this matter lower than the 5D mark 3. When it is combined with case 2, I have had very little problems. It also seems to work quite well for Peter Read Miller, former Sports Illustrated photographer. Please see his video on RUclips at ruclips.net/video/5EHx_tZLCjQ/видео.html. He used this camera at an actual football game and has proof of it's exactness. I tried the link that you provided above, but was not able to see the video. However, I see the person was asking about their 7d Mark 2 and under equipment used I see 1DX Mark 2. I think it would be helpful to use the same or similar equipment when answering the question(s). This is equivalent to some one asking about driving a stick shift and you give them examples of driving a formula 1 car. That is what throws me off the few times I have seen your videos. I am expecting a higher level discussion to match the equipment you are using. Thank you.

    I use my camera mostly for family pics, grandkids sports and special functions, so I’m not a professional by no means, I simply want my pics to turn out great, nothing deep or too difficult! I have a Canon EOS 60 D and use to try shooting in P, TV, AV or M but had too many problems with my pics turning out even descent, so I started shouting in AUTO MODE, so it takes the thinking out! Lol! And was then having trouble with focus when shooting my granddaughters basketball games, so hopefully with the advice of your video today, I won’t have that probably anymore! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! 👍😉
    Do you have any other suggestions for settings when taking pics at the basketball games?

      Auto exposure is good when you're starting, but it can be fooled too easily based on the contrast in the scene. My approach to exposure is in another recent video I did here: ruclips.net/video/Dyhtt3eAn3g/видео.html
      As for focus, I hope I covered most of it in the video! :)

    Hello David, nice tuto. Do you have similar tips for Nikon camera (AF-C...) ? I have a d750 and it doesn't have a eye detection. Which mode would you advise to use for fashion, portrait photography and sport when subject is moving and you want to keep eye sharp, especially at F/1.4..F/2.8 ?

    • @DavidBergmanPhoto
      @DavidBergmanPhoto 4 года назад

      Marc Labro On Nikon, the equivalent to Servo mode is “continuous.” There are other settings of course, but I since I don’t shoot Nikon, I don’t know what they all are.

    • @thenexthobby
      @thenexthobby 4 года назад

      Wider apertures require the AF point to be pre-selected (and subject's eye kept there) if you don't have eye-AF to track exactly that eye. Easier for portraits, less so for fashion, not practical for action.
      For sports, get as close as you can so that your wider focal length increases depth of field without giving up as much light (and shutter speed!) as a smaller aperture will. Increased depth of field = fewer requirements on AF points or even proper focus.

      Back button feels more natural once you get used to it. Also - it is slightly faster in most cases because you can hold it down constantly. Then, whenever you push the shutter down, it doesn't have to first find focus and then shoot since it's already in focus.

      @@DavidBergmanPhoto I'll have to give it a try. I've always used the shutter button but the newspaper photogs I've worked with swear by back-button. Thanks for the reply!

    • @mikewinburn
      @mikewinburn 4 года назад

      i've used shutter button focus for years, and when switched to back button focus, i preferred it. In my experience, though, it wasn't 'faster' since both shutter and af-on "focus and meter" when you 1/2 press. Instead, the BBF allows full pressing without releasing the shutter, so, you use more often, and under harried circumstances, and not worry about taking a picture when you didn't mean to.
      But the biggest benefit for me is when i release the button, thats where the focus stays - like a focus lock. So, then, i can keep pressing the shutter for different exposure readings without changing the focus point (which you can't do with shutter button focus.)

    With a slight grain of salt: the back button focus is perhaps great for RIGHT eye dominant people, preferrably w/o glasses. For LEFT eye dominant people with glasses (like me, for instance), using back button focus becomes a pain in the donkey.
    Also, the grip on the camera is slightly lessened while the thumb is out and about.
    I sometimes wish instructors would present BBF more like an 'option" rather than being 'the right and reasonable thing'.

In other words, if I select 4 points for example and in Servo will face detect work while I track the subject? Or does one have to select all the points and the camera will select which point(s) is appropriate ?

      I have lesser EOS models: Elan II, Elan 7e, and 50D. In each case, whichever button does back button focus, that's _all_ it does. My rear AF button won't additionally re-meter on any of them. I vaguely recall AF+AE being a configurable _option_ for the rear button?
      I can separately remove AE from my shutter buttons but all that does is make me use the rear AE lock to meter. I don't have enough right hand thumbs for that, in practice. As it is I struggle with remembering to "manually focus" with the back button AF technique. :)
      All he's saying about the AF-On button is that the button already turns AF on _by default_ . (If it did not do so by default, out of the box the button would literally do nothing.) What I think he's NOT saying is that it's got nothing to do with AE since that's still by default controlled by the shutter button.
      In ALL cases for ALL cameras (for back button AF to have always-on/always-off control) ya gotta leave the camera in Servo (or whatever tracking mode is called for other brands.)

      It doesn't matter as long as you are using back button focusing. I think I know what you are asking. Due to the fact that there are two sets of controls once you release the portrait mode and switch to the landscape, will you have to refocus? the answer is yes. The back button focus is faster to achieve the focus once more of a moving subject. If they are standing still no problem, it will be the same. Lower models will not have this problem because you will be using the same button to focus.

      My Elan II with its 3 AF points and the same Servo mode sees your newer, fancy tech and realizes not much has changed except for the # of keepers. With my 50D, my biggest challenge is remembering to actually keep my thumb on the AF On button.
      Make that two challenges, I often forget to use a fast enough shutter. Make that three challenges, most of my lenses are slow. Sorry, I meant 4 challenges; I'll shoot in low light also. Are we having fun yet? Forget it, where's my iPhone?

    Yet another Canon-centric video.

      Shane Baker I am a Canon Explorer of Light so most of my gear is Canon. The viewer asked a specific question about a Canon model but, as I said, the information applies to other brands as well.

    How on earth would anyone who doesn't know these type of simple things be buying a camera that expensive?

    Absolutely no reason to demo focus on a camera like that. Sure principles will be the same but behave.
