I've looked almost everywhere, but do you think that taking acrylic paint to the back of the cutting board, in whatever color after the decal has dried, would keep it from being ruined overtime instead of using epoxy or resin?
I love happy accidents!! Thank you so much for sharing this idea, I just love it!! I have so many ideas going through my mind right now! And the best part is it is a Dollar Tree craft, can't go wrong with that! Cheap gifts that look expensive are my specialty lol
This is great! I'll try it out! I got a glass cutting board but the bottom image has peeled off so I thought about the waterslides but I wasnt sure how to do it.
I placed it on the backside of a clear dollar tree cutting board. You can see it, but it really pops if you either paint the back or put white glitter, mixed in epoxy on the backside (glitter/epoxy applied like you would on a keychain)
I've been struggling with waterslide for years starting with Lazertran inkjet. Had good success with it on painted wood once. But since then the film falls apart or easily scratches off. Since most of my projects are preferably print projects, I am always looking for methods of transfer to various surfaces...mostly canvas. Thx for sharing your method.
I have had better luck (applying the regular way) if I seal with several layers of clear spray paint, allowing each layer to dry before the next. Recently, I tried sealing with a few layers of clear, then a few layers of PlastiDip Glossifier. That gave it a bit of a rubbery coating and I was able to work with it a lot without it tearing or the ink coming off. Maybe try that to see if it helps on your projects.
I’m so glad you explained that because I was trying to figure out how to do it. I’m new working with water slides so I was thinking there’s some type of glue holding the picture to the backing so I had “mirroring” it on my Cricut. I definitely agree that it was a very happy accident!!! Very cute idea!!
I'm trying very hard to put a full waterslide wrap on a tumbler. No matter how many times I try to get it on, it's wrinkling some and leaving a few air bubbles. I have tried and tried to get them out to no avail without tearing the waterslide and ruining it. I have sealed it 3 times with Rustoleum two times clear as well as doing a few coats of plastidip. Once I epoxy will it conceal the wrinkles and air bubbles any at all? I'm desperately trying to do this and getting very frustrated. Thank you for any help.
Hi Lora, thanks for this great help.. I hope am not too late.. Pls Lora how can i identify an inkjet or a laser water transfer paper. I was motivated by your video and bought a lil water transfer paper but i cant rem if its inkjet or laser peper
Other than it showing on the package or your receipt from purchase, I am not sure how to identify ink jet vs. laser. I do know if you try to use laser paper with ink jet printer, that will not work. The ink won't dry.
I am just starting to use water slides how do you get it so that it doesn’t have the obvious edge around where are you putting the picture? I can’t get it to blend in nicely
Some waterside may be easier to work with than others. I just seal it really good with clear spray paint and wipe with the paper towel covered scraper. Sometimes, it takes awhile to get it all down and wrinkle free
Does it matter what side of the decal sticks to the glass? Isn't the backing of the print supposed to adhere and not the front? It seems like this method causes the spray to adhere and not the decal itself. Although it's a great hack I'm confused about the process.
That’s the question I came here looking for. I agree with you surely the printed side that’s been sealed is now on the back of board and when you remove the paper backing you’d be left with the sticky residue that is meant to be put on the surface?? How do you remove the sticky from now the back of the board as that’s the side that is meant to adhere to the surface?
@@coleenehase1500 My answer, having tried it, is that it doesn't work. You are trying to stick the wrong side and the sticky side is left face up. You can try spraying it with varnish, but the sticky surface doesn't like it. MAYBE if you left it for a long time, so the bond was really strong, you could remove the unwanted adhesive with a solvent but the plastic of the decals is very fragile and lots of solvents would just dissolve it
Tx so much Laura!! Just getting ready to attempt waterslide & I won a bundle @ Beth’s last party!! Your video will be such a help & great idea with the cutting boards!! Love your lives & youtubes!!!
I'm sorry I missed this. I haven't tried baking waterslide but you probably could do that. I'm using epoxy, it was to put the glitter on, but you could probably spray the glitter spray on it for a little sparkle and cover that with clear spray paint. There are other things you can do instead of using epoxy, as well. I didn't end up try it, but I thought frosted glass sprayed on the back would look good, too.
The clear gloss spray paint becomes the glue when its pressed on when the spray paint is still tacky. You then put epoxy/glitter mixture over the backside and you're set
@@sparklecreations I have not tried it with clear glue spray. As long as you can move it around to position it, it may work. But, I can't say for sure since I have not tried it.
I have seen people use waterslide on ceramic coffee mugs and they bake them in the oven to "cure" them. I did try it once, but not with this method. I tried it the traditional way to apply waterslide. Personally, I don't see the waterslide staying on mugs long term, after repeated washes. So, I never really got in to doing those.
I used a clear waterslide laser paper with black ink only since I don't own a color printer. I applied the waterslide to a ceramic mug and let dry, then sealed with ModPodge dishwasher safe coating. It's a special ModPodge and sometimes I find it at Joann's. It works great, but I usually recommend hand washing.
I was wondering the same, that the side where the backing is, is where the waterslide needs to stick. When i do water slide, i usually place the backing on the product, and gently slide the backing from underneath the image.
@@kenaw2470 I think it's because she put the image on the underside of the glass (like you would mirror HTV) . She's got it going on "backwards" , but from the front it looks correct. You couldn't do this with a solid color plate or mug.
Yes thats how you would normally but on a waterslid, butt she made a mistake, when she put a clear coat of waterslid she help the cutting plate over it and to see how it would look and without thinking she pressed down and the clear coat wasnt dry so it stuck on the glass plate, she didnt want to throw it out so she decided to test and see if backin of water slide would come off and did so she saved her project. Might not been correct way but still looks good n awsome and not wasted her project either.
@@kenaw2470 Correct, but this is just something I discovered it stuck to the tacky clear spray paint when I accidentally sat the glass on it to center. When submerged in water to remove paper, it stayed. 🙂
After the image is applied to surface I wait at least 24 hours to dry well then apply the epoxy? Let epoxy dry 24 hours then I can handle it,wash it etc correct ?
Once epoxy is applied to the back, you should be able to hand wash and be fine. I use FDA Compliant epoxy only. Be sure to check it's FDA Compliant before using epoxy if it's going to be near food
If you were going to do her trick then you would not print mirror image but if you were going to lay it down and remove the water slide from the underneath of the cutting board the traditional way then you would need to do mirror imaged
This isn't the traditional way to use waterslide. Just wanted to be sure you knew that. But, yes either way, I seal it with clear gloss spray paint. I do a few light layers, then come back with 2 or 3 heavier layers. Let it dry between each layer. :-)
I just tried this way and for the most part it worked. My decals cracked. That is the first time that happened. Do you know why that would happen? Thanks
i’m confused.. don’t you have to slide the image off abs the back side sticks to the glass. this is done back wards in the video? does it stick either way ?
I explained in video that you place it on while the final layer of topcoat is still a bit tacky and that's what helps it stick to the glass. It doesn't really matter which side, as long as it will adhere to your surface.
Hi everyone, can I get some help? :/ I am having massive printing issues. My printer leaves scratch marks all the time and sometimes the print is totally unusable. My printer back feed uses wheels that make contact with the ink on the paper and leave marks, and my front feed keeps bumping into curved or elevated surfaces on the paper, scratching the ink. Does anyone know how this can be solved? Many thanks in advance :)

On curve surfaces, it will wrinkle. If you keep working it, you can usually work the wrinkles out, but, you risk rubbing your ink off if it's not sealed well.
