My daily driver is 37 years old, paid for, restored to near-new condition, no emissions inspections, no check engine light, just a solid old car that any idiot can work on himself. I have another one with 752K miles on it. Good old cars back then. I see the flashy newer cars pass me, and I smile, imagining how much their payment is every month, lol!!

      I'm an accountant and have always found hilarious driving my beat-up car into accountant's meetings, surrounded by vehicles worth up to 200x mine. Most vehicles depreciate, so I've invested in property, as that appreciates in value. I've never owned a vehicle that I've paid more than $5,500 for. We currently have three vehicles, and combined they're worth less than our most valuable home asset: our piano. I don't charge the earth: my hourly rate is lower than most in my profession. But I'm happy dealing with little people and sleeping well at night, knowing I've done my best at my job. :-) Years ago, I lost a client as I told them (they were in their sixties) that they needed to sell their 'prized possession': their vehicle 100% financed that they paid $60,000 for, and which was sinking them financially, and they only used 'for fun' once per month. Sounded nuts to me, so I told them so, and they told me I wasn't doing my job properly. I'm sure they're still complaining about not getting anywhere financially.

      @robindear5043 5 лет назад +167

      The cost to fix her Ford Fusion would have conservatively been only about $600-800. Why in the name of all that's sacred she would get rid of that car to buy a $20,000 Ford Fusion? If I heard right, wasn't the "newer" Ford Fusion only a few years newer than the car she got rid of?

    • @billgateskilledmyuncle23
      @billgateskilledmyuncle23 5 лет назад +142

      @@robindear5043 it's a woman thing and an emotional decision. I remember when my mom's water heater went out and as we were mopping up the water because the tank busted, she started shouting that she was going to sell her house. I told her that's like selling your car over a dead battery. If women would take an interest in fixing things themselves, they would think more analytically. The only way to have a car that never needs brake work is to not own a car or trade yearly.

    • @robindear5043
      @robindear5043 5 лет назад +68

      I think she was being shortsighted in her decision, and now regrets it. It may have taken a few days, maybe even a few weeks, but she could have inquired around and found a mechanic or shop that could've fixed her car for a reasonable price. I have known just as many men who make emotional, "spur of the moment" decisions, then later, after the smoke clears, they regret it. This has nothing to do with gender. Will she negotiate with the dealership to return the car, even though her 30 days have passed? I doubt it. She didn't mention it, but I wonder if she traded her car in for the $20,000 one, or has it sitting in her driveway?

      Dave gives really good advice to people who are fine working 9-5 for someone else, but youll never be able to retire at 45 sipping pina coladas in mexico with his advice. Most debts are fine to keep, CC isnt one of those, but, paying off just about any other debt is just for piece of mind. assuming the interest is below ~5%, I personally wouldn't bother paying them off, instead if invest my money, it's not hard to get above 10% ROI on investments which means by taking out a debt instead of paying with cash youre 5% a year, every year until you die, richer than you would be paying off the loan. To most people this is hard to wrap your ahead around but it's the mindset your average millionaire has.

      You had more integrity. They haven't paid a cent in years and their credit is shot because of it. You took out money promising to pay it back and fullfilled that obligation. I'd feel better about that.

      When you figure out how much is just interest they want from you it should make it easy to negotiate. It should be illegal to charge those interest rates.

      @@KatieBellino You don't owe a debt collector anything. They buy that debt for nothing from the person she actually owed. They are simply leeches and don't deserve any money.

    I feel for Brenda. It takes GUTS to face this kind of debt problem after trying to run from it for years. It takes humility to admit your own stupidity and own your stupid mistakes.

    i remember when I was 5, a family member came to our house and asked for money. My dad told me to come here and asked me a simple question "what do you so when you need money" i replied "you go to work" still kills me that my dad said that phrase so often that is became second nature for me to say it.
