- Laser engraving with power coating is not as simple as it seems. Let us know what you think. Here are our thoughts on the process.
Cutting boards from JDS Industries www.jdsindustries.com
Powder coating from Eastwood www.eastwood.com
Laser - Epilog Mini 24 60watt.
Laser setting may very depending on your machine. Alway test your settings before making your final product.
Thank you for taking the time to make and post this video. I found it very informative.
It's great you share some of the downsides to methods too. It saves a lot of people a load of time and expense to come to a similar conclusion so thank you! 👍
A - Mask off the area before engraving. Oramask works great but masking tape will also work.
B - Don't move it. Use magnets/hold downs/corner squares....anything to keep the piece in place while you apply the powder.
C - no air of course while you melt the powder.
Those three tips will guarantee success. 💯
Thank you for the tips!!
Good video, regarding the painting method. Use dewaxed shellac after you carve. This will seal the end grain and prevent your paint from wicking. Glad I saw this before trying the powder coat.
Engrave a little deeper then use heat gun to melt powder. Sand off the excess.
what kind of heat gun do you use to melt the powder?
@@sued877 Just any old heat gun
Wow, new sub here. I was going to try this, great video I am glad I waited.
We just posted a new video trying it a little different. Might help.
Mask off the rest of the board and use a simple heat gun.. Fast and works to perfection
Been having the same struggle with it also.
If you have any tips let's us know. We want to try it again have a few ideas on making it easier.
Seems like painting is less stress. Thank you for trying.
Put the powder coat in and use a heat gun to heat the powder coat get a much better result
Would defocusing (on the initial and powder coat) help create a smoother melt of the powder coat?
There is better ways to infill lettering. Most powder coat cures at 380 - 400 degrees, for 10 - 15 mins. After the base material gets to the cure temp.
Thank you for sharing that info. We are going to try again this week.
Also powdercoat does not like to stick to carbon I worked at a powder coater at a laser cutting factor and we had to make sure all carbon from cutting or engraving or the powder coat would just break right off the metal but other comment 100% on info about it
Did you turn air assist off? After watching this. I don't think I want to try it now.
Yes we did turn it off.
Use a heat gun
What if you mask before engraving and powder coat?
We're going to try that.
