Tip for y'all. If you go to Harbor Freight you can find the white and black powder coat in 16oz plastic bottles for $7.99 each, they work great. I use the heat gun method.
I think the heatgun result look better too. I recently tried both methods too. Melting with the laser seems to be somewhat inconsistent for me, some areas would stick really well, others flake off easy. It also leaves a bit of a line pattern. With the heat gun you can heat larger areas, make sure all the powder is melted and it leaves a smooth shiny texture. In my testing, I found I needed to mask the project regardless of the method used, because the powder gets trapped in the wood grain. Sanding it off was a no go for me, as the sander seems to melt and smear the rogue powder particles, smudging the whole face up. It's a rather messy process, but it did leave a really crisp and clean look if you mask, use the heatgun and don't sand afterwards. I'm still figuring out if the result is worth the hassle. Btw, thanks for sharing your experience, @kimandgarrettmakeit ! your videos are inspiring to experiment
Awesome video as usual thanks a lot, but I'm trying to figure out what masking tape was used via the heat gun process. Don't see the link for that item in your Amazon list.
You mentioned in your opening segment about doing powder coating on cutting boards. I am hoping not on the business side of the board.. I would think that putting that on the cutting side would cause it to chip off with use of knives and stuff and then going into food
Masking works great on designs that don’t contain a lot of detail. But if you engrave something with lots of detail, removing the mask can be time consuming. But I agree with you and typical just mask my projects. But this approach does work really well.
Harbor Freight White on Pine, Heat gun.....works great. Granddaughter has all sorts of new projects for me. Thank you so much.

What’s the name of the paint ? 🙏🙏
I did this on a white acrylic control panel made the engraved letters black, worked very well
I’ve done this on a prior laser project and the results were outstanding. Especially one designs that contain a lot of detail.
There are also heat lamps for powder coating parts that aren't able to fit in the typical oven ... I'm sure that might work better then the heat gun
I do the heat gun method. Works great. Thank for the video on this
The heat gun method looks less complicated. How much time does it take when applying heat?
It was just 5 minutes under the heat gun.
I think the heatgun result look better too.

Great video and idea, it turned out great by the looks of it. I think i would prefer to try the heat gun method, lol
Thanks again for your trials. Maybe someday!

What’s the difference between Mica powder and powder coat paint
Awesome video as usual thanks a lot, but I'm trying to figure out what masking tape was used via the heat gun process. Don't see the link for that item in your Amazon list.
Great! What kind of powder is applied? 😀
What is the make and model of the heat gun please? My shop heat gun died a while back and I’ve been looking at getting a new one.
Great video. Can you link that powder coat please?
This looks very interesting as an option to offer people. Question…. Could you use a heat press instead of a heat gun?
how long between coats for heat gun to dry the powder?
Do you think you could do this on the F1?
The heat gun looks like it has a more finished/cleaner look👍
Where do you get the powder from?
Can I paint my basswood then engrave and cut, then come back and fill engrave. So I have two colors.
The heat gun is the way to go.
What brand of heat gun is that? I don’t see it in your amazon store. Thanks!
How do you remove the airflow? Air assistant is removed but still airflow is coming from somewhere!
Is the powder coat food safe for the cutting boards?
I was wondering that too
I did not see the heat gun or the powder coat in your Amazon link. Can you please post these so I can try this?
Wagner Heat Gun: amzn.to/3TJR4zK
What mask do you use? I tried blue tape and that didn't work well
Have you tried powder coating stainless steel?
Who is this “Helen” that you speak of 🤔 these look like fun and I can see doing these with area codes
What mask did you use?
Use your oven. 👍

Why not just mask the material, engrave and then paint it.

Instead of a heat gun, try a toaster oven.
Off subject, do your ears spring back to normal after wearing that hat all day?
I don't know. It's the last thing I take off at night and the first thing that goes on in the morning.
Way too time consuming...and messy...no thanks.
It's really not that bad. I oven bake.
