So the story goes, back in the day in a military canteen somewhere around south India, all the dishes listed on the menu were vegetarian. Only the 65th dish was a non veg. Now many of the soldiers ordering wouldn’t know the local language which the menu was in, so if they wanted to eat chicken they would ask the chef to make chicken # 65. Hence the name.
The ingredients differ between restaurants but this is quite a good version.

Omg I never thought I'll see Marion make a chicken 65 😂 amazing! It's such a "local" cuisine you find in all south Indian restaurant which serve meat.
It's spicy and citrusy and very aromatic.
It's best served along with any alcoholic beverage.
In some variants of the recipe, egg is added to the batter. Also thinner the batter, better the taste for this!
Also curry leaves goes to the oil along with chillies to infuse the flavour into the oil.
you can even sprinkle coriander powder on it while serving to give the right amount of kick to it!

Please use curry leaves, the best ingredient. I avoid Ketchup because I want it spicy.

You nailed it!! Every indian who eats chicken loves this 😍 Though there are so many variations i dont add yogurt, you can add plain flour or rice flour for extra crunchyness. I add curry leaves & green chilli into the oil with the chicken pieces that way you dont have to sauté again in the pan and fried chiily & curry leaves tastes awesome 🤤For vegetarians make this with Paneer or Tofu ..Paneer 65!!😋

What you said about no fixed recipe might be true as I have never seen such a chicken 65 before. Usually we do not add corn flour or if needed add it with the chilli powder .Also when frying add curry leaves first in the oil and then the chicken which adds a delicious flavor. The second part adding friend chicken is also new to me.

Making this right now I'm SO excited. I am marinating the chicken and awaiting my curry leaves via Amazon Prime 🤣
Update this was 10/10!! I added in some msg and subbed the ketchup for hot sauce as I didn't want that flavor profile. Also curry leaves ARE WORTH IT. I've never cooked with them before I realized now this is the ingredient that I was tasting in a lot of my favorite Sri Lankan dishes!

Not a true 65 but a nice recipe (Chennai here). Cornflour and rice flour should be mixed into the marinade before frying and we like to add curry leaves to the marinade. It's a Sunday starter staple in our house. You can also use small pieces of bone in curry cut chicken. 65 is a versatile dish because you can use the same mixture for prawns, cauliflower, mushrooms, paneer. Another nice recipe for Marion to try out is Andhra style lemon chicken. South Indian food is diverse, nourishing and extremely flavourful but unfortunately doesn't get it's rightful place under the sun because Indian restaurants tend to focus on heavier North Indian/Peshawri cuisine.

Indian chinese cooking (this history behind the origins is quiet fascinating) uses green chilies primarily, and if we really need red chillies, its either going to be in powder form or a very indian-style chilli sauce. If you have an indian store near you, check out Chings brand products- they are ind-chinese food in a bottle.
