    Dear Gentry,
I hope this finds you all well. I am currently out at a special location shooting footage for your viewing pleasure, so I won’t be able to immediately respond to your comments as I usually do. In my temporary absence, please feel free to help others in that true Gentry spirit of goodwill and positivity. I will check out your comments and respond as soon as I can. Onwards and ever upwards!
    Best regards,
    TGV

When you have an opportunity to respond I was curious about a collection of automatic Seiko watches I have from the 60’s. I’m taking them in for service and I’m unsure whether to have the dials cleaned and the patina removed or leave the dials as they are. Do you have any thoughts on this? I’m not concerned about the $ value as they are family pieces and I won’t be selling them, should I just have them cleaned and redone or leave them with the patina, scratches and weak lume?
Love the show, really enjoy the passion and knowledge you share: it’s infectious!

      Enjoy TGV.
Perhaps something to ponder whilst you commute :
Woody! Good grief the YT algorithms must be in a state if using such a word is of concern.
In any case, I (as a coffee roaster) often have to find words evocative of... less tangible qualities, the elements of smell and taste that are immediately recognisable yet difficult to vocalise.
*'Forrest Floor'* is a good one for the general woodiness of which you spoke, one picks it up in everything from whiskey to wine, from fragrances to coffee.
Maybe worth a note with your Parker?

Dear TGV, I recently discovered you while shopping around for a new watch, and I "absolutely adore" your channel, even though I'm not by any stretch a 'watch collector'. You're going to think I'm a heretic when I tell you I finally ended up buying an Invicta Pro Diver, and being the heretic that I am, I really like it. I've loved Submariners since the first time I saw one as a kid, and I finally decided I'll never live long enough to afford a Rolex, and this is the next best thing.
But that's not really what I'm commenting to you about. About the greatest watch I've ever owned was a Casio Tide Sensor Module 3206--a black-face, A-B-C, tide and moon phase, solar-powered, and set by the atomic clock. I surf, so it's a great watch for me--HOWEVER--this is my problem: The liquid crystal display has got blank spots in it where the crystals don't work anymore. I can barely tell what time it is! And it appears Casio, for some inexplicable reason, has ceased producing these amazing watches.
How do you prevent the LCD from fading on your G-Shocks, or is there even a way to do that. And would you have any idea where I could find another 3206, without the degrading dial problem?
My goodness this is too long--sorry.
Highest Regards, and I hope you have time for a reply, but with almost 400,000 subscribers I honestly don't see how you could;>)

Excluding the obvious: family friends, Food, water, shelter my top 10 would be
    1. My Video Games.
    2. My hats. I wear a hat pretty much everywhere except for special occasions.
    3. My knives.
    4. Of course my watches lol.
    5. My Jackets. Love a good coat for the cooler seasons.
    6. My nicer clothes and dress boots. I try to look classy once in a while.

    8. My sunglasses. Can't stand being blinded by the sun.
    9. My movie collection.
    10. My books. My favorite is one written by Michael J. Fox called "Always Looking Up" he wrote about how he stays positive and keeps pushing forward despite his Parkinson's disease. Real good read TGV I recommend it. Also glad to see you're feeling better my friend. I guess Hugo's "special brownies" did the trick lol.

My top two life mantras I'd like to share are:
    1) If you don't like something in your life change it!
    2) You really can achieve anything if you want it enough and are willing to work hard for it!
Keep up the great work and stay healthy.

Your video showed clear signs of being a display of *punctilios,* but your *Dionysian* attitude balanced it out well...
(Did I get that right? 😆)
Btw, I am currently going through the series *Westworld* for the first time, and can't wait to get the next season-- I highly recommend it.
As a writer, my opinion is that it's highly entertaining and well-written without *insultng the viewer's intelligence!* (A serious pet peeve of mine...)
Oh yeah, the 10 things I cannot live without (especially when I head out the door) are...
    1) Wallet
    2) Money Clip
    3) Keys
    4) knife (currently a Camillus, but I also love my Kershaw Leek)
    5) Watch-- lately my G-100 G-shock has been my 'go to'
    6) Bushnell Pocket-clip Flashlight
    7) Lighter (of some sort)
    8) Phone
    9) A paper novel of some kind... Batteries may die, but a book will always stand vigil with you...
    10) Coffee-- preferably a dark roast of some kind
    11) Fisher Space Pen-- the 400 Chrome Bullet
    12) Small, un-lined Moleskin writer's notebook/Can also be used as a sketch pad
    *O&U!*

Ok, as you asked......in no particular order......1, I agree with you, Lavazza coffee - I’ve been drinking it for 30 years, and nothing comes close, 2, The Beatles - still the most uplifting, inspiring and original band of all time, 3, Alfa Romeo - my favourite cars, 4, Sheaffer No Nonsense fountain pen - I have 3 or maybe 4 - been writing with them since I was 11, and I think they’re perfect writing instruments, 5, CAT dealer boots - rugged, comfortable, well made - can be worn with jeans or a suit, 6, Levi’s jeans - to me, the classic jeans, well made, inexpensive, 7, Harris tweed - I have several tweed blazers - they’re smart, warm, timeless, and work equally well with smart attire or jeans, 8, automatic watches - ok, so I can’t yet afford a high-end watch, but intend to wear automatic or mechanical watches, by Hamilton, Seiko, Bulova and Orient - I love them, they feel special to me, and I love them, 9, vinyl records - I have around 500, and a vintage Thorens turntable - they’re just lovely, finally, 10, my retro Blacks Crystal ‘keyhole’ spectacles - part of my identity, and really good quality. Honourable mentions - Sony PlayStation 1 (as a CD player), Apple IPhone and IPad, Trickers brogues, cuff links - preferably onyx, Fender Rhodes pianos.......

Things I can't live without. My dignity for one.
    On the topic of Gentry,
For myself, being a gentleman has nothing to do with what one owns or wears and more to do with how one
    carries oneself and treats others.
Quick wrist check. Not a Rolex nor an Omega. Rather my new made in Japan Seiko Padi Mini Turtle.
I admire it as the waves on its dial dance in the morning sun. Superb!
Thanks for the horological vids with a philosophical twist!

Love the fact that a knife is apart of you needs... Now with your appreciation of higher end designed horological apparatuses, I think that you need just a small step up in your knife game. I would recommend the Grimsmo Norseman for a bit of eccentric carry, the Rask if you’d much rather a bit more traditional style of carry. You can fall into a pretty deep hole following how these knives were developed and how much craftsmanship goes into them. Incredible works of functional art.

One of the best vocabulary books I've ever been exposed to is "Word Power Made Easy". My high school English teacher would drill us relentlessly using this book. Only years later (when in college) did I discover the source of our "college prep vocab nightmares".....but those words are still with me 35 years later. Great vid, sir!

Verify the Fontenille-Pataud Gilles Thiers knifes sure you will appreciate, a good mix between old style guilloché and miror finishes with some edc style...
    Might suggest :
    - a tiger eye bracelet.
If you have European/Italian roots then you must be forgetting :
    - the birth/baptism medal, mine never quited me since I was baptized....
    - a dupont lighter.
    - proper leather soled shoes (Lobb, church's, john's...)

    Hi TGV
Thanks for all your great videos.
We followed your recommendation to read the book Meditations by Marcus Aurelius and met physically in a small study group just before the corona lockdown, after which we switched to online meetings that works well and provide the opportunity to meet more often and talk about the book.
The book surprises with how much Aurelius already at that time knew about humans and the universe about 2,000 years ago. He writes, among other things, about death, and what role it plays on a universal level. In our opinion these are thoughts that would be beneficial for every modern human being to read and think about.
Aurelius' thoughts on the human soul and its place in the greater cosmos are magnificent. And from that he provides advice on how people can best interact with each other on a daily basis, both in thought and in deed. It is truly a coherent and usable worldview.
Thank you very much for your book recommendation and we also encourage others to read this gold nugget of a book.
Greetings from small Denmark in the big universe :-)

Hi TGV. I have to say, I always enjoy your EDC/ GQ videos, given I find them inspirational and a lot of fun. It’s quite obvious to me that you enjoyed filming this one which makes it even more entertaining. Those items we all hold dear to ourselves really do make life more enjoyable. I’m now marking down on my list to purchase a paperback version of Meditations. Seeing you speak so highly of the benefits of it on a number of occasions has convinced me of its value. Good to see you so happy and well. O & U to the Gentry and your good self my friend. Keep up the great entertainment and inspiration.🙏🏻

I should really get to reading Meditations. I have it in audiobook format, but after several attempts of listening to it before I go to sleep, I realized that I would absorb it better if it comes in written form.
My list (please note that these are "comfort items" and are in no way crucial to my existence :))
    1. A watch - for time keeping. I tend to check my watch when someone asks me the time, even if I'm holding my phone and could easily check the time widget. (my curent collection is somewhat limited and made of gifts, so I does not necessarily reflect my taste in watches, but the gifts were well intended, so I cherish them )
    2. Slim fit clothing - I'm tall and slim... other tall and slim guys know my plight.
    3. Cologne (Hugo, Montblack, or Str8...) - people treat you different if you smell good ... troubling, but nonetheless a fact of life... at least where I'm from.
    4. Shoe polish of some sorts - same as above, just switch the smell factor with the look of a well kept shoe
    5. Badger hair hairbrush - try it... trust me... you will thank me.
    6. Mouthwash or mints - because that garlic sauce tasted great, but my coworkers don't have to smell it.
    7. My French press and/or Mocha Pot - when brewed properly, coffee is a great pick me up. Same goes for tea.
    8. Understanding and patience for the human condition - because sanity is important.

If you like Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, then you might also like Massimo Pigliucci's book (a Roman by the way), "How to be a stoic" which will fill out more of ancient Stoic philosophy in a very approachable way. Modern Stoicism is taking off world wide (just Google it).
