  • Having salt in plastic can be good and bad! When choosing plastic baits it is very important to understand how salt affects the action and movement of the bait. The question always is does Salt help you catch more fish? I will explain when to use and not to use!

    This is exactly why I like to make my own plastics. I can control every aspect from salt content to color to firmness if the plastic. Plus there’s a certain pride that comes with building a rod, shooting done plastics and then catching fish with them.

    Great information David, thanks for the insight. I've always heard the salt was to sell more baits bc the fisherman think the fish hold on longer so they buy em then have to buy more often this selling more baits. I have noticed the weight and sink rate is faster on salted baits though so that makes sense too. As far as scent I believe it does matter getting bites but agree its questionable if they hold on longer but I will improve my odds with the 3s's all I can (sight,scent, smell).

    So many questions for you because I appreciate how sincere and candid you are.
    Scents...Yes no... garlic, mint, shad, crawdas, fish sticks, sprays, dips, gel , when? Why?
    Also, besides depth of water as you mentioned, but how do you determine what fall rate to present to the bass with your soft plastics? When do you like a fast fall as opposed to a slow sink? What role does water temp, time of year, vegetation play with your thinking process to figure things out?
    Thx in advance

      I like the choppo because it has a hard tail I have the whopper popper has a soft tail that when you store in tackle box after a year or two the plastic tail gets messed up and can even shrink in hot weather the choppo is solid hard plastic back tail so is always in working order after storage

    • @derrickwestfall2002
      @derrickwestfall2002 4 года назад

    I agree ..I pour lures and salt has its place but it also makes the bait weaker with the new plastic like dead on plastic will have as faster a fall rate with out the salt Anyway in the floating and the non floating applications I’m with you ..the salt has nothing to do with fish hanging on to the lure yes it cast better but my lures last longer than a one fish bite so more bang for the buck with the same result sure I pour both just not a big fan of salt thank you for bringing that up cheers ...40 years on Sam and T bend enjoy your vid good luck in you tournaments 👍

    I got into this last few years. So I throw a weighted wacky head a lot. I seem to get bit more with a yum dinger on the weighted head. I fish it anywhere from 1-6 feet. Yum is cheap and works for me. I used to throw nothing but Yamamoto senkos on it but my partner was out fishing me. Changed to Yum and got way more bites. But for weightless I only throw Yamamoto. Question, if I’m fishing deep docks for suspended fish, like 20-30 ft deep. And I’m skipping docks, am I better with more salt senko or cheaper senko weighted?

    As a bait maker I always believe that salt is to make a bait sink when fished weightless.
    Bait makers use it for advertising purposes because of the old rumor that it mekes fish hold on longer and the baits become MUCH weaker, and you buy more.
    I make an exact copy of a senko. Same size, weight, sink rate, action, softness, etc.. I make these for personal use and when fished Wacky with an o-ring usually catch 20++ bas on one bait. Big companies can do this too but would be bad for resales.

  • @binkwood
    @binkwood 7 месяцев назад

    From what I understand Yamamoto uses MF plastisol, popcorn salt for weight, and NO SAND. Think of salt in a plastic like rocks in cement; adds weight but does not adhere to cement/plastic as well as straight cement/plastic would. In the case of a Senko the salt is absolutely necessary for a weightless rigged Senko to have the proper fall (shape and plastisol dura-meter are also factors). Salt is also one of the main reasons Senko's rip up so easy. As far as the taste of salt being beneficial, I agree with Dudley; there's no way to scientifically verify that claim. IMO salt in lures like Senko's rigged weightless is absolutely necessary for presentation purposes but durability is not going to be good. Any time you use weights like slip sinkers, jig heads, and even rigs like the Carolina rig and the drop shot, baits without salt have a more natural/floating action and they will be more durable.
