Man I got a lot of catching up to do. Growing up, dad wasn't into fishing so I never learned how. Now I'm 30 and I got the itch to learn. Hoping to learn enough to get the old man to go with me sometime. Your videos definitely help! Keep it up man ✌️
Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup ruclips.net/user/postUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.
All my friends laugh at me, but I’m old. And ain’t nothing like a 3,4,5, or 6 liber on a medium or medium light. I may not get him in the boat and I call that a good release. But the memories I’ve made with my fairy wands are priceless😁👍
Hey guys, it's 2020 , Im 63 years old and i been fishing spinning gear since i was 12 years old , so for all you dummies that think spinning rods are " Sissy Sticks " , Well keep thinking that, and I'll keep rippin lips on them big females up under those trees and docks, I learned long time ago that baitcaster's don't always work in every location, But i can put a lure anywhere with a spinning rod !!!
@@eltopo6622 yeah me too haha when I was young like 14 I would use the alternate hand like he shows in the vid now I just use a finger, it's just a natural skill some people lack as some people just don't get how to play a fish either
I've been fishing with my Grandfathers spinning gear since I was four. I just bought my first catch'n'keep fishing license in ten years. It's been way too long since I've gotten a line in the water. From our downtown apartment I can walk down to the river and fish in the shadow of Parliament Hill. This is the first summer since my Dad passed; he's the one that taught me to fish. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown
I didnt actually consciously realize I was already doing the Feathering concept of line control until this video. Such an incredible bit of advice. Very true, it helps make cast precision Sooo much better.
Never heard people talk crap about a spinner reel before, but fishing here in Hawaii is way different. I use spinners for all small and medium tackle, like whipping, floating or light dunking. Then I use bait caster for slide bait or heavy dunking.
In my youth and young adult life I had always fished for trout and panfish with spinning rods. Spinning rods have been all I've ever needed. Fast forward 4 decades later with about the last 3 decades of just occasional fishing while raising our children, I've finally gotten a long awaited fishing kayak to return to fishing. That said, I'm coming back with a strong interest in Bass fishing and have been struggling with the criticism and pressure from fellow fishermen to elevate my reels to bait casting reels, with their claims that spinning reels aren't sufficient enough. Prior to watching this video, and having never used a bait casting reel, I was almost tempted to get one in order to see why they feel this way and what all the hype is about. Thank you for clarifying and supporting the facts that a spinning reel is not only more than capable but all that is needed. Shalom aleichem
I just watched this video and commented 2 weeks ago. Ill say it again, the 2 biggest advantages you get from spinning rod is the fact the drags are butter smooth, and this is with a 50 to 100 spinning reel, I have lews, Daiwa, Shimano, Mitchell's, pluegers, Abu Garcia, I've got em all and used em all. You have to spend 150 plus on a bait caster to get what I consider a good drag. But the 2nd thing is the fact you can learn to skip baits in places you didn't think possible. You take and master that skill, don't even attempt skipping with bait caster until you're a master with spinning rod. There's no reason you can't use the same baits on spinning gear you can bait caster its all about the action and line size you pair with that rod action. After you learn with spinning gear, then take the muscle memory and master bait caster. Crappie fishing docks in winter time when bass fishing is slow is fun and good practice. There's always some kind of fish hanging around a dock you can skip a berkley gulp alive minnow to on 1/16 or 3/32 ounce jig head. You'll be watching your line too, and that rate of speed fishing is very comparable to whacky rigging. It's slow but fun and good practice. Plus you can harvest from God's free grocery store.
Last week I was skipping a 1/6 ounce Rooster Tail under a dock with a spinning rod. To be honest, that was my first time skipping any type of lure...casting or spinning reel and it was done on accident now I know how to skip a lure. Tight lines!
bro this was sooooooo helpful i have been using a baitcaster all my fishing life witch has been about 3-4 years and i am trying to get in to spinning gear i have learned a lot from this one video thank you. and good luck fishing
This video was just what I needed. Not ashamed to admit my casting skills needed work and same with my fluoro to braid knot. Thanks for dumbing it down
I'm a spinning rod guy, so this video made me smile. Although don't give away too much as I love to hear people refer to a spinning rod as a finesse only stick.
been fishing and using spinning rod since i was like 8 years old, im 31 now.. for me its super easy its like an extension of my body. i just picked up how to use it over the years and now im very proficient with it. NOW im learning how to use baitcasters.. lol well i got a birdsnest on my baitcaster ima have to clean out tomorrow.. it has a learning curve for sure.. practice makes perfect
I believe one can catch fish on either bait casting or spinning. I love spinning reels. I’m throwing bigger baits now going after size over numbers. Many big game saltwater fisherman use big spinning reels. I just got some saltwater rods and bigger reels for large glide baits and swim bats. It’s working for me.
Love all the tips. Fishing in upstate NY a spinning rod is a staple for me. I always when rigging the night before make sure I have 2 set up at least to take with me .If that water is cold or ultra clear thats all that will work is finess baits and small line . Any who thinks its a sissy rod has not watched too much pro fishing lately . Seems as if more and more guys are to turning to spinning gear to get a bite . Hope all is well my freind with you and your family . Looking forward to another live show soon . Take care and stay healthy !!
I'm not going to say it's not cool that you put this up, because it is. I guess I'm just sad that some folks didn't have a dad or grandpa to teach them this firsthand. But I'm thankful that you've put this out here so folks that didn't get that handed-down knowledge a chance to see how to do it right!
Coming from trout fishing in the PNW, spinning rods are second nature for me. I'm a full hand feather-er, as it sets me up to flip the bail almost instantly after the cast.
This was exactly what I was thinking when I watched the feather fingering, I was like uhhh I just use my hand as I prepare to close the bail, I heard its bad for the reel to use the handle to flip the bail.
Another great video....Thanks! Another good fairy wand tip is to manually close the bail instead of cranking to close it. I hear it helps control line twist.
Thank you for the sharing the correct way to cast a spinning reel. So many people want to touch the line. You are correct, your finger should never touch the line. Your finger should touch the spool at the beginning and end of the cast. Great Job!!
When I first started fishing I used cheaper baitcasters. Throwing 7 inch power worms and 1/8 weights was difficult. So I used spinning. I learned to be just as good and accurate.🎉
I’ve tried with bait caster, I’ve been fishing my all out of a canoe with a trolling motor for over eight years as many days of the year that I can. Spinning reel just makes more sense with my brain and just seems more manageable. It seems more versatile. I feel pretty proficient using a spinning reel, until I watched this video! I’m excited to start practicing feathering
I have use a open for 30 plus years.i have been through all the good an bad.i'm left handed an I've have always use the hand over spool to control my cast.thanks for a awesome video alot of good help.keep it up.hoping to see more of your videos. Stay safe
Dominates! Tell it like it is. I've been a horrible bait caster. DC reals have saved me. But I never leave home without a couple of spinning rods, David. Thanks for saving my manhood 😁
Improved Albright knot. I use to tie this. Herd bad things about it. So I stopped. Never knowing why. Always worked for me. I got so good with the FG its my go to. I use Albright to attach fluro to my braid backing. Great video. Just bought a ProFishiancy rod at Walmart for my salt water fishing. 7'6 heavy. Can't wait to use it
I just saw this video Dave. Thank you. I've struggled for years with a spinning rig. I'm right handed and use a right hand retrieve baitcaster. Trying to master the left hand retrieve spinning reel is a challenge. And thank you for the knot. Seems much easier than the FG knot.
I almost exclusively use spinning reels, and I definitely agree with your casting advice. Getting the rod to load up and do most of the work is very important. I am looking forward to using a fluoro leader with braid now that you've given a great tutorial on tying the leader.
Thanks man. Finally, someone explained that knot with up close video. The mechanics you explained on how to, and NOT to, cast and feather a spinning cast was spot on. Thanks David. I'm a Costa and Opens guy and I still learn from your videos. You're helping advance the sport of fishing.
Love that knot sir I’ve tried others like the fg knot never could get it right once I learned that knot makes life so much easier it’s easy very strong and doesn’t cut through your floro
Good video. Same as I’ve been doing from line to knots for a couple of years now. Wish I had this video to watch 4 years ago. Would of saved me hundreds of hours and trying out things I saw on RUclips to get to this point. Great information. Ps I to am a huge finesse fisherman. Ned, wacky, weightless plastics and my favorite the Neko on spinning rod with 20lb Smackdown to 8 lb floro. CRUSH them with these. Also I did pick up a tip on skipping to keep rod around 3 o’clock. I’ll have to give that a go. Thanks for always giving real and useful tips. A lot of videos promise tips but don’t deliver. I can’t watch Mike Iconelli anymore. Feel like he’s always just peddling Berkeley and doing click bait videos. Anyway thanks again. I’ll keep tuning in!
Thank you for the information on feathering. I've never seen it explained. Broke a fish off at the knot today. (Double Uni) Ugh! Hoping the knot you showed helps. I'm not real confident in the braid to leader.
Great info here. I agree on the ease of use, spinning is easier than casting for skipping. I have become fairly efficient over the years in using the blood knot for my leaders.
The blood knot is great for connecting mono to mono, and I probably tied a thousand of them; I make my own fly leaders. However, I have not found the blood knot to work with braid to mono. It slips.
in the uk we term more or less any artifical lure fishing as spinning, we term spinning reels as "fixed spool" and baitcasters as multipliers or just baitcasters, great tips btw
Spinning rods are awesome! It’s funny here in Kentucky the state record largemouth bass is 14 lbs. Some of these guys think they need heavy gear to pull in 10 lb bass all the time. That’s not the case at all.
Spinning reels are great ! gravity makes them sit between fingers perfectly . Your rod bends more naturally. your guides take stress better. I know bait casters since the 80s are more popular and flashy. I never heard any really good fisherman insult a spinning set up. Proper spinning can be hard to learn and fools mock what they dont understand.
Lol! Those tree bass fight like crazy but they don't fillet out very well ! I use that same knot and I'm adding spinning rods to my boat just because of talking to you and seeing your videos - another good one brother! 👊🎣
Lol we were fishing one time and my son got hung up in a tree about 10' about the water. It happens. There was a guy on the bank, walking a trail and he said "you fishing for firewood?" Everytime I'm in a tree or see someone do It thats all I can think of.
Gotta tip for those who aren’t the best with knot tying or those anglers with few poles I tie a clip at the and put fluorocarbon leader snells on all my lures for quick changes
Great video.. I use this set up for Texas rigging creature baits also.. My set up is 20lb braid/ 20lb fluorocarbon. The reason is i have broke off so many fish using less fluorocarbon
Good video(I recommended doing this on another video). As someone who has been trying to learn this year this helped a lot, had never seen or heard of the feathering technique before.
Recently bought a spinning love it use t to float fish this video helped me big time , got my self a two pound eal ik it not the biggest but it was a start thanks for the tips
I know I use a spinning rod more and more each year. I use em mainly for drop shots, shakey heads and fluke style baits. But I'm using em more and more with small spinner baits, buzz baits, small crank baits, poppers and smaller top waters. I can get hard baits in places with a spinning rig that I can't get close with bait caster. And they have better drag systems in them in my opinion. They handle braided line better for me also. I lose less fish overall with spinning rig. I've even started using a heavier spinning rod with braid and mono leader thunder sticking on sml. Lose alot less fish with that setup.
I actually use my index finger and thumb of my left hand to feather the line. I almost pinch the spool with those two fingers... I feel how fast the line is coming off and can judge the distance way easier that way.
Hey Dave! I almost had sweet tea come in through my nose when you made that first cast in the trees. LOL I am definitely more of a spinning reel guy. I invest a lot more money in spinning reels (stradics) than I do my bait casters. Stay safe brother !!
My first visit and I was rewarded with I completely thorough lesson on spinning rods. Thanks so much. I’ve subscribed and set my notification bell. 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
Man I'm saving this video because it looks like i need to try that leader knot. Looks easier than my current and i use almost exclusively 8lb fluoro and 15 to 20lb braid
Thanks David, Skeet Reese taught me that spinning rod technique about 22 years ago. Sure beats the heck out of what the average fisherman does to cast a spinning rod, which I call the "HAIL MARY" which usually turns into the "Oh hell Mary". Good article, you have convinced me to work up a grade in lure size. I've always fished primarily ultra-lite, but just as you say, it's really tough to skip a bait caster. Best of luck this year to you!
Thank you I am new to bass fishing and the tips were very helpful and the skipping tip was very helpful because I have been trying to skip under docks but I couldn’t do it very well so thank you.
I always feather with my hand around the line. Great tip on the finger tip method. I'll admit I'm a bait caster man from KY. We flip a lot of jigs, lol. I have been using spinning rods more. Braid was a game changer for the spinning rod. Hated the loops and the only time I would use a spinning rod was inshore and pan fishing. As always thanks for the tips.
Thanks for explaining that feathering technique Dave and the keeping the second hand on the butt of the rod. Never tried that. Also, just started using that knot you taught us and it actually gets easier to use after you've done it a few times. Great video sir!
Man I got a lot of catching up to do. Growing up, dad wasn't into fishing so I never learned how. Now I'm 30 and I got the itch to learn. Hoping to learn enough to get the old man to go with me sometime. Your videos definitely help! Keep it up man ✌️
People strive to become good fly and baitcasters, but disregard spinning skills.Good vid.

I can slow the line, or bite it to my rod and stop it with a quick grip.
The knot is best...I use them for tying leaders for my fly and olso for spinning
Awesome job David! Can't wait to go fishing when they open up all the lakes.
Awesome vid, thanks so much for the tips, it really helps us newbies!
Awesome explanation. The slow motion casting really helped.

Gotta tip for those who aren’t the best with knot tying or those anglers with few poles I tie a clip at the and put fluorocarbon leader snells on all my lures for quick changes
Thank you for sharing the many kind of techniq or idea to us! Watching from philippines!
Great video.. I use this set up for Texas rigging creature baits also.. My set up is 20lb braid/ 20lb fluorocarbon. The reason is i have broke off so many fish using less fluorocarbon
😮thank you so much for this video.
Im learning to cast and the wisdom in this video really helped. 🎉🎉
I just learned to skip under docks... awesome technique
You use what works.
I feel how fast the line is coming off and can judge the distance way easier that way.
great tip on feathering technique
Hey Dave! I almost had sweet tea come in through my nose when you made that first cast in the trees. LOL I am definitely more of a spinning reel guy. I invest a lot more money in spinning reels (stradics) than I do my bait casters. Stay safe brother !!
I love the spin gear I'm not leaving her
I'm always in the trees. Just something about them there tree Bass you just have to go after them first. 😂 Loved the video and tips. Thank you sir.
Thanks great info I love the spinning rod and I was definitely casting wrong and I wasn’t even aware you could skip with it
I love that knot you just taught, what is that knot called? Thanks for the great information

Thanks Dave for your informative exciting tutorial.🙏🏾
My first visit and I was rewarded with I completely thorough lesson on spinning rods. Thanks so much. I’ve subscribed and set my notification bell. 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
Thanks for the sub Terry
Hail Mary I like that lolol
David, you're the man! Thank you sir!
Game changer for sure
Hey Double D, you definitely did a master class, and coming from the master, I’m still using that knot that you taught me 👍🎣👍
Stay Safe and Well 🙏😇🙏
Working hands sponsor this guy please!
Love the spinning rod advocacy DD :) And I use the exact same knot for fluoro to braid, it's so easy to tie and never breaks.
I got this rod.. it works really good
I use 1 Spinning for live bait with bobber
2 spinning's for different lures
Thanks for explaining that feathering technique Dave and the keeping the second hand on the butt of the rod. Never tried that. Also, just started using that knot you taught us and it actually gets easier to use after you've done it a few times. Great video sir!
I use a spinning rig alot. Love using 6-8 lb. test for slider worm fishing or the mojo rig. FLC
You are a great teacher. Thank you.
Awesome awesome video man. I am a beginner and I appreciate all the input and help.
Great video, that knot is great. I'll never use a FG knot again. Thanks
Great Info and gear explanation
Giving us that good juice!!! People don't know the power of the spinning setup. Thanks man.
