      @Fishing Preacher777 Doesn't make sense to fill a rod with fluro.

    • @danielmcnish6555
      @danielmcnish6555 3 года назад +5

      @Fishing Preacher777 Never use a leader in skipping as it creates a weak point. This technique is reaction based & thus bites are harder & thus with obstacles in play as well as bigger fish I would never use a leader. Go straight braid or fluero, & I base this on water clarity & how active bass are. Now when "finesse" fishing the technique is much different as I go to braid to fluero but again considering the "conditions" & I stay light line in finesse fishing. Remember your finessing to get more bites & thus means smaller fish & with a more realistic presence. Understand the conditions in dissecting out your arsenal in use. Take into account soft plastic Power fishing as well. As example if im looking for big bass an gonna throw a worm then I'm Not gonna be "finessing" , I'm going 7'6 - 7'9 medium heavy / heavy rod , heavy line fluero or braid (without leader) again considering the conditions & if I'm flipping/pitching in heavy cover or in open water (without) a leader as again this technique is the mindset of hooking up a big bass. Always be dissecting out the water clarity, conditions, & type of fishing unto the "reason" for ones selecting type also like 6am summer fishing going topwater, etc.etc. Take this info into account & I assure you that you will get more bites, more fish & your progress will only continue to gain in knowledge & confidence. ~Reign Creative~ EST. 2022. @Fishing Preacher777 I heard that. I'm kayak fisherman these days & to me its more spiritual & one with the sport. It's also more methodical in all aspects & forces one mentally as a ultimate sportsman to really focus in depth of the craft, & I say this starting fishing at age 3 , & starting bass fishing at age 6 & my first bass was 3lbs. From then on I was hooked you might say, lol. Fishing has definately evolved to its pinnacle state, just matter of fine tuning the craft with everything we have nowadays from technology, equipment, & the must desire to challenge oneself & get after it. Amen. Tightlines brother.

Hands down your material is so good for building foundations. So many other channels either preach fundamentals good googling should explain or assume you know a lot. As a tech savy eager new fisherman, I know way more techniques than I can physically do and finding ways to build up to that is a blessing.

    Another thing to try is skipping with a spinning rod. It helps you focus on the skipping motion and trajectory, while not having to focus initially on feathering the spool. Once you get the motion down, it will cut down on the amount of backlashes with a baitcaster. Also, skipping a Ned rig is a killer

      Thank you- that's an awesome idea. I started already on a DC reel, made it much easier- I've had far less problems- but I'm still having some issues at times with the mechanics of the roll cast itself- releasing at the right time. I still lob the occasional bomb or shoot it into the water like a bullet instead of getting that low, straight trajectory that feathers into a skip. I think I'm trying to build too much momentum- I need to "slow my roll" in other words.

      If your new to this technique shimanos dc reels will limit your backlash better than any other reel due to the DC braking technology. Diawa Tatulas are great too due to the sv spool & can also checkout video on new Okuma Hakai reels coming out 2022. On these 3 reels notice the spools. These spools are bigger versus the small tiny spools , & thus bigger spools backlash a lot less due to inertia force & holding less line , thus limits a backlash.
      Get the right equipment , master the technique, then you will have confidence & experience to try the lesser quality "skipping" reels to gain knowledge in understanding the majority of reel types & usages. Hope this helped you out. Tightlines.

    • @Grimey_Fishing

      @@danielmcnish6555 Thanks for the gear advice! I have actually improved in leaps and bounds with my current assortment of reels. I was out on a reservoir a few days ago and I was feeling like a superstar! Today, though, I was really inconsistent; those days are becoming fewer and fewer. I think I'm going to use electrical tape on the spool to minimise how much fluffs up on days like today. With my wacky rigs on a spinning reel and my jigs on my Tatula Elite Pitching/Flipping reel I can skip quite far when I can't reposition myself quick enough (or I just don't feel like it). I just need to work on my aim and hitting smaller and smaller targets.

    • @danielmcnish6555
      @danielmcnish6555 3 года назад +1

      @@Grimey_Fishing Great job. Yeah that is where those Shimano DC reels shine as you can focus less on worrying about a backlash due to low confidence/experience & can focus more on those pinpoint casts/skips. Just takes time, you will get there. Tightlines brother.

      @@zacharyallen671 this video is the best I've seen on the subject. So I'd watch it several times. Allowing the rod tip to drift upwards toward the end of the cast is key. A fluke on a spinning set up is a really good place to start. If you want to see a kayak angler that can skip really well. Watch Kristine Fischer.

    Pro tip: when you’re learning to skip - make a long cast with your bait (longer than the distance when you skip cast) and put a piece of electrical tape in the spool before reeling back in. You’re gonna back lash a ton when learning and this will keep you from completely ruining your day with a deep backlash.

    Wow....that looked like a LOT more than an 1/8th of an inch left on that spool. But, I digress... GREAT video. Backlashes suck, when you're NOT skipping, and with flouro it makes it even worse. But, this technique looks priceless or dock fishing, if you can get it down. The other problem with this technique is practicing it. You can't sit in your backyard and cast at a bucket to perfect this (unless you have a pool). You HAVE to be around water. The pro's today have taken the sport to an entirely new level. Thanks again for sharing.

    Best video I've seen from you yet. I used to skip soft plastic crawdads into little nooks and crannies in coves on Lake Conroe when I was young way back. Completely forgot about it after living in Hawaii for almost 30 years, and not freshwater fishing at all. But now I'm back on the mainland. In the northeast corner of Washington State. There's tons of sweet fishing holes, with overhanging vegetation, that this would be perfect for. Thanks for reminding me, and showing me a couple new techniques, and info as well. Good stuff, bud.

    Fun fact: Soft Plastic Frog was the name of my band back in high school. Good times. That being said, I can't skip to save my life. I fish saltwater 99.9% of the time. Grew up fishing freshwater. I only use my baitcaster when fishing select spots for Speckled trout, also the only time I toss artificial. But I have times at those spots where it will be handy. Gonna find some practice time right soon. Thanks for the great info!!

    Great instructions! Thx. Now to practice a little. You could also suggest to people with spinning rods to get the motion and feel using a spinning rod because it is definitely more forgiving. Skipping with a spinning rod actually helps with keeping it closer to the water using the same motion.

    I gotta try this. I can skip pretty well with a spinning reel but fear of a catastrophic backlash has always kept me from trying with a baitcaster. Putting some tape on the spool with about 75 feet of line out is brilliant, I never thought of that.

    I always adjusted my tensioner to drop a lure to the ground without a backlash. I suppose that this is the old fashioned way 🤣 But, as you said I think feathering with the thumb is pretty key. I've never been able to master that, at least with skipping. I think skipping will take a lot of practice to master. Practicing with cheap line makes a lot of sense.

    Love the video, very helpful for sure. I fish out of a kayak sitting down so some of those cast are extremely hard to make. I fish with a lot of jigs and soft plastics weightless around cypress trees in Louisiana and let me tell you that skipping a zoom magnum lizard with no weight during the spawn will put some monsters in the boat quick fast and in a hurry. I personally like 40 lb braid and 5/0 offset Berkley frenzy hooks, they don't get off with that combo. Thanks for the tips they have helped me tremendously. Don't catch them all 😄
