I personally prefer the NIKKO brand. You can't tear those things up! I have fished with the same one for a few weeks at a time and caught tons of Bass on it. When you do the math you realize they are no more expensive than other brands because you will go through 10 of the other brands and where I can still be fishing with the same NIKKO. The only drawback I have for the NIKKO it is hard to get a hook through them when you are setting them up.

Leave them out in the sun and, after they heat up, they become much easier to work with. But I agree, that durability is awesome.

The durability is amazing. I'm just saying I texas rig it and have lost a lot of bites. Where as if it were softer I would have got them. On the other hand, I'm still using the same Nikko after 15+ bass.

    • @mike2687

@@gregstabryla9945 - If you're not getting a good hooks on bites, I'd look at skin hooking it, the hook itself or technique in the hook set... otherwise, this bait is very thin top to bottom which should give a great bite to hookup ration--I even use Jon's rigging with the Zman bullet jig-head going through the side (less of a bite than traditionally)... it only has a #1 hook on it and I have a great hookup ratio.

Great comparison on the hellgrammite brand differences. I'm going to have to order some online. I've been looking at numerous BPS stores, Academy and some locally owned shops. Seems central Missouri outfitters just don't carry them (most staff haven't even heard of the hellgrammite lure), but we have some awesome smallie rivers/creeks just south of me. Love the looks of the durability of that Nikko.

Owner used to have those ultra finesse heads in a 1/32oz with #1 hook. Not sure if they still have that option since I still have about 5 or 6 packs in stock so I haven't had to shop for them in a while but that 1/32oz with #1 hook is great for a nice slow fall, they work great with the Nikko Hellgramite and Leech!

I've been using both brands for some time now and the durability of the Nikkos is incredible. One day I caught over 20 smallmouths and 30 rock bass on the same lure without any damage to it whatsoever. Also, the larger 4.25" hellgrammites they now offer are great for targeting that big bite. I tend to stick with natural, dark colors for the Nikkos and a variety of colors of the Yums just to mix things up. As they say, match the hatch, but when in doubt, freak 'em out!

its the different chemical make-up of the brands that when stored together cause a chemical reaction and the plastics melt together. I've learned the hard way to never mix multiple plastic brands together. I ruined my first pack of Nikko a few years ago after having a killer day catching LMB. It seemed like my second order took a year to arrive....

  • @Boon-ie1rq
    @Boon-ie1rq Год назад

If you rig the nikko hellgrammites belly down and flat, it falls slowers so naturally it will be in their face and strike zone longer as it's swims down. The front 6 legs will also flutter/wiggle from the water resistance creating small vibrations as it descend or swims.
Sideways is more aerodynamic in the water, less resistance, less surface fighting against the horizontal water pressure as it descend, so it will fall faster or dive. The legs are also inline and tucked in with the body most likely creating less vibrations if at all.
Different actions, similar profile while swimming. In different situations, one can outperform the other. Other times, fish might not care as anything that looks thick and buggy is potentially a good source of protein.

  • @hbstead

I have learned the same, have to rig it weedless in these rivers with all of the rocks and trees under water. My go to is the ned rig trd or tickler, but I fish it the same as you fish your hellgrammite. I have also settled on the same setup, 6'10 medium with a 2500, 15 lb braid to 10 lb leader. I broke off so many times with 4lb and 6lb leaders I learned the hard way.

I love throwing the hellgrammite at fish, I rarely do, but when that thing hits the water its a brutal battle over it. I got the bass pro one in black with blue flake because its the only one in my local store. I wish Z-man would make one.
Aquatic insects are such an underutilized imitation outside of the fly fishing world.
I recently saw some cool underwater bed fishing footage from another channel that captured some kind of insect that uses random debris as a shell, sneaking into a smallie bed. The interaction was pretty crazy: at first the fish just picked up the crawler and spit it away from the nest, but when it came back the fish picked it up, ejected the "shell" the bug was using and ate the bug. The craziest part about it was that this bug was crawling right in front of the camera, but because it was so well camouflaged I had no idea it was alive until my second time watching. It just looked like a tumbling piece of grass or wood.

We been smashing them on the Yum version rigging it Neko. The Smallmouth and the rock bass have been smothering it here in Jersey.

I caught 40 plus bass in Driftwood river in two days and used the brown color Nikko Hellgrammite, still using the same one bait and had a lot of hits with it sitting still and raising up, the Nikko Hellgrammite is long lasting.

Thank you for doing this video, I've used your discount code to purchase both, I've tried them on chickamauga lake & had no luck, but went to the river side of dam & caught 1 on june bug color with the Nikko hellagramite 4.25, I ordered the green pumpkin but it looks blue, I'm going to try the black & the fire, I see that you do have to fish it slowly, I've seen you in pretty fierce current & catch them do you still use a 1/8 oz? which size do you prefer the 3.0 or the 4.25? I've been using the owner finesse ball jig for years one of the best!🎣😎👍

@@morecreekfishingadventures today I fished the Nikko & the yum hellagramites & got bit on both the 1st was the Nikko 4.25 black & the 2nd was yum fools gold that caught a mean mouth & mix of spotted & sm at least a 2lbr, so I'm very glad that it gets bites on a lake, but probably is better used on a creek or river!!

I caught a 7 lb channel cat on the nikko hellgrammite last night plus some largemouth, smallmouth and walleye. What an amazing lure. Thanks for turning me on to this lure John. I really appreciate it.

Great informative video. I've only used the Yum because of cost but I do catch a lot of fish on them. But I intend to order some Nikkos soon. Thanks for the video.

@morecreekfishingadventures Unfortunately I just learned a lesson the hard way. If I could literally kick myself in the rear end, I would! Really hard too! I had mixed two Nikko Hellgramite bags of mine, brand new and what do you know? Just as you mentioned not mixing the two different brand types,I jumped up and ran to the storage area behind my home, frantically getting into the package of the other name brand I had purchased while fishing the Jacks Fork here in Mo. Only to find out the bad news after opening it up finding my Nikko brand melted to one another more than anything. Do stupid things, wim stupid prizes is what I say! At least i'll know better next time around.

@@morecreekfishingadventures it is DEFINATELY a Beautiful area as it is part of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. I'm a birn and raised Missourian and ever since I was a very young boy,my parents had been taking me the 4-5 hour trips down there for summer vacations. My Great Grandmother used to live in the Bootheel around the Big River,Jhonson Shutt-Inns area and I have family in Paragould AR which is another Beautiful state along with TN.
