I am new to the channel but have followed you and your career for a while now. So glad you are part of MLF now. As I am a huge fan of MLF and BPT.. really enjoying the channel.. keep it up! One more thing you forgot the Biffle bug for beaver baits. Definitely throw a biffle bug! Tommy biffle is like the king of flipping!

I also usually go with the Pitboss best hook up ratio for me, trokar flipping hook #5 pegged weight depending on where and what. I need a serious showing at mosquito the 21/22, have to dig out of 50th. Did something I learned from you Big D last week and it’s paying off. Next derby’s on portage lakes the 7th LTT event. This video was great David, I literally have been trying to figure out why Ive been missing the hook up or losing fish when I'am punching grass mats after I switched from brush hog to a beaver bait and the ball up theory makes 100% sense. Complete eye opener thanks.
That's happened to me using a beaver bait with it balling up. doesn't happen all the time but I've lost fish due to the balling up.. Love the videos. As well as the little nuggets of tricks and tips.
The trokar really seems to eliminate the balling up in the hook bend you described. Basically the cutting point is on top and busts through really easily. I waste a lot more baits on snags and such but I think you'd like the hookup ratio.
You can bend out your hook a little and it will help with your hook ups if you don’t have the bigger J hooks. Thanks David for all that you do for the sport! God bless.
Try the big bite fighting frog it has a slit cut for your hook that eliminates most of the ball up in the j of a hook. I have the same problem with normal beaver style baits but with the fighting frog by big bite it seems to eliminate most of that and I get a little better hookup ratio.
Timely topic. I have had, just this week some beaver experiences. Using the Berkley Max-scent beaver as a jig trailer, I've caught some nice fish this week, and today I had a mega bass on. I hit her twice but she still managed to spit my SK structure jig. So fun.

Great info everything helps for sure! If you get time do the video on the chatter bait opposed to throwing a spinner bait. Also difference in a Jackhammer than just the regular. Other than 15.00. I caught a bass the other day and it spit up a large black beetle type water bug. And I think that’s what bass think beaver baits are. Thats my 2 cents. Great video man keep it up. 👍🏼🇺🇸
Thanks for the beaver breakdown. I tend to use these on bluff walls and rocky points with some success. Like you said the hook up ratio seems off on these but I do get bites. I'm not sure if you use tubes much but up north where I live they are good with the smallies. I haven't used them much but my fishing partner is keen on them, if you have some suggestions on them I would like to hear it. PS: never noticed the packaging on the reaction innovation baits. I guess my mind was more on what was in the pack:)
Greatly respect your stand David. At some point people have to say enough is enough to the moral degradation of our culture. It may seem like a small thing to some but the small things are how we got where we are today. I won’t be buying any Reaction innovation products too many others to choose from.
Reaction Innovation has changed their packaging. I use a ton of NETBAIT products, I love the Paca series, but there are a few things RI makes that I love to use like the Pocket Rocket.....that’s about the only one I use from them
10 years ago I was a die hard jig fisherman and a co-angler beat me severely pitching the sweet beaver to the same cypress trees I just pitched to with a jig. Long story short he gave me a package of sweet beavers in the payback color and I have been fishing them ever since. My (2) PB’s 9+ lbs we’re caught on a beaver. I never paid attention to the packaging until a salesman in Bass Pro Shop Bossier City told me about the packaging and that’s why BPS didn’t sell them. Although the pictures are somewhat provocative I wouldn’t exactly call them nude. My wife and I are Christians and have morals Currently we still use the baits and hopefully we are not judged or condemned for doing so. We respect ✊ your choice not to use them. Maybe we need to pray about it. Cheers

David I use beaver baits a lot but have always used an EWG hook with them. I was very surprised when you said use a straight shank j hook for them. Would you mind explaining why an EWG hook is not your preferred hook for this bait. Thanks man. I know the response might be long and if it’s to time consuming for you to explain I understand. But I’m very curious.
Personal preference, but i always use EWG superline hook (3/0). My hook up ratio is great. Try both and decide for yourself, that's the beauty of fishing!

Question....I was thinking about what you were saying in regards to hookup ratio and I was wondering if using an EWG and tec spose it would land more fish than a round bend or straight shank since the hook point is already through both sides of the beaver. Just curious of your thoughts

Not sure why you would use a straight j hook on a beaver tail which gives no room for a bait of that size to push down out of the way of the hook. And if you hook a beaver tail bait properly with a offset hook where the hook lays across the top of the bait where all beaver trails have a groove on it where the hook lays. Then when the fish bites it don't bunch up in the hook instead it literally pushes the bait down and out of the way of the hook.

As for me, I’m a big fan of the Missile Baits D-Bomb.

Would an extra wide gap hook help or hurt your hook up percentage with the plastic bending?
I don't like the eatra wide gap. The needle part of the J is to short it needs to be longer! Straight shank flipping

we all want to catch multiple fish on one bait but a softer beaverbait would i think help landing percentage is that why you perfer the pitboss
