My older brother recently became a father for the first time, and the comments my mother makes about not understanding why my brother is involved in feeding and changing the baby made me so confused. Apparently she did everything with me and my brother, which was typical at the time.

I think it's older generations praising modern dads because our own fathers were so hands off. I remember my grandma just gushing over my husband changing diapers because my grandfather never changed a single diaper when my mom and her siblings were little. Changing diapers was like parade level celebration for her.

Instead of asking “can I hold the baby”, you can offer “I’m happy to hold the baby if you need, while you eat, rest, have a shower ect”. That way parents know your keen, but can pick when and if they hand their baby over. “CAN I HOLD YOUR BABY” can be very hard to say no to and puts parents in an awkward position

Exactly! My brother and his girlfriend (16 and 17 at the time) used to do this all the time and it was so annoying. They would drop the baby off onto whoever’s lap and walk away/go home and you wouldn’t see them until hours later (usually because they just went to smoke weed). Never was asked to watch them. They did this to my cousins (12 and 15) me, my mom, my sister, dad, whoever. It finally was addressed when I invited them and family swimming at the hotel I was staying at when visiting home and they dropped the baby in my lap in the hotel room and took off swimming themselves. (I think I was there for my moms birthday and they couldn’t even give her a break to relax, just kept asking for rides everywhere and kept leaving baby with her) 🙃 It ended real soon after that. Same, my dad was taking me out on his own from when I was a week old, and was super invested in looking after me from the get go (and still does a lot to look after me - sadly my mum died almost a decade ago now)... my parents did end up divorcing when I was 10, but taking care of me and sharing the parenting load was never an issue that contributed to their relationship not working out... I even recently found the custody schedule with all my extracurricular activities carefully written out by my dad when they were working out how it was gonna be split as evenly as possible, including all the changes my dad was making to his work hours to maximise the time he could spend with me and working overtime when he didn't have me/I was busy so that he could take me to & pick me up from school as often as possible (til I could easily get there myself)... He never complained about doing this, or taking me to things - because in his mind it's just so _obvious_ that you aim to be as involved in raising your kid as possible and of course that's what he wanted to do because being a dad has always brought him joy and he enjoyed every bit of it when I was little.
I didn't realise that having a dad like mine wasn't the case for everyone til I became more aware of other family dynamics outside of family and my parents' friends with kids because all of the dads were as involved (in my kid brain at least)... it was genuinely baffling finding out that some people had unsupportive/uninterested dads when I became best friends with someone who had a dad that wasn't like mine... it was very sad but they luckily have an awesome mum, and her mum & brothers were all really helpful and supportive - but they definitely resented and didn't like their dad, and I felt that way too... especially when my mum met my step dad and he was immediately more supportive & involved in my life than my friend's dad was in their's. Thankfully their mum found a really good guy who actually seemed to care for them even though he hadn't ever originally planned on having kids of his own, and is who they consider their dad. Some people just shouldn't be parents 🙃

At this time she was working from home because of Covid and they expected her to work as if she didn’t just have a baby. My mom helped out a lot when my sister was working. Unfortunately, they acted like her having a baby and needing time off for doctor appointments was her “not being a team player”. It is pretty shocking that some fathers aren't as involved. I see many dads in the NICU I work at sterilizing the parts and cleaning up the pump. For every dad like that there's the one just sitting in the chair on his phone while Mom is changing the diaper, bathing the baby, and cleaning up the pump. But luckily there are more involved fathers out there and Keith shows he was meant to be a loving husband, Becky's best friend, and an amazing father.

Becky first of all you’re amazing. Second, I love how conscientious you are of other peoples’ experiences. When you said you saw babies in the NICU for a day or two and made a conscious decision to validate the difficulty for those parents it made me thankful for the good people there are in the world. Thank you ❤

My friend had a baby in New Zealand and the family bathrooms you are describing at the mall are literally EVERYWHERE there. Some are stand alone in public spaces and not necessarily attached to businesses. I don’t understand why that can’t be the norm in the US.

Keith, every large building (mall, restaurant, hospital, movie theater, etc.) does have the space to offer a family friendly bathroom/lounge like the one in Century City you described. It’s simply that the developer does not prioritize that need over the ability to monetize the square footage. Thank you for bringing this up. ❤❤❤

I had that conversation about the lack of changing rooms in Maine men's bathrooms when I was a baby (90s) and he said you make due, figure something safe and sanitary out. Lots of squatting and laying the baby across your legs to change them. Uncomfy for all involved which is why we need more family bathrooms and changing tables in ALL bathrooms.

As someone who's water broke 4 days (at 36+3) before my labour started (at exactly 37 = so no longer premie), the contractions I had whilst unable to move, strapped to a bed being monitored, were by far the most painful. After I was 'allowed' to get up and move around it was so much better, honestly those bed-bound restricted contractions were worse than when the ring of fire happened! Hats off to Becky for having all their contractions no able to move, the pain must have been unimaginable.

Thank you for validating the NICU stays that are only a couple days. My daughter was there for low oxygen for a few days, full term, and I felt like such a poser to call ourselves NICU parents (I still don't) because we weren't there long and we left with a full-term healthy baby. However, yeah that first day was terrifying, we still had the 20 people swarming her, running her downstairs, doing pokes and prods and xrays, having her connected to wires. My best friend had a baby with a congenital heart condition discovered at birth that presented also with low oxygen, so for a good 12 hours I was convinced we'd be running into open-heart surgery. Luckily not the case, she just needed help with her lungs getting on-board, but it was so scary. We had to scramble baby-sitting for our oldest at home for the extra days.
