Just wanted to note a couple things about the pet section in case others end up reading. As medical recommendations change quickly over time. Pet poison hotline has a staff of toxicologists on staff to advise. When you pay that fee you are getting the consult along with your case number that will be followed. If the ER doctor working on their case needs additional help they can call them and give them the case number to discuss further. The cost of this is 100% worth it since they have the most up to date information on how toxic something may be. Pet ERs do not usually have a toxicologist on staff. Also giving hydrogen peroxide in most cases is no longer recommended due to gastric issues that can arise from it. Please do not administer hydrogen peroxide unless directed by pet poison hotline or your veterinarian.
My dogs got into an oatmeal raisin cookie one day and the poison hotline literally walked me step by step through whether to administer hydrogen peroxide (had to bc of how toxic raisins are), advising immediate transport to an ER, worked with the ER to discuss. Simply having a voice of reason in a moment of pure terror is something I can look back and be grateful for. The fee is ALWAYS worth it. Especially to ultimately save you trips. There was another instance my dogs got into something that is toxic but they were able to advise based on weight, calculations of amount consumed, etc. NOT to go to ER and get fined the high charges unless I saw X symptoms develop which were highly unlikely (and did not ultimately happen). All pet owners should have that number on hand at all times!!
As a vet, thank you. Pet poison helpline isn’t a scam or money grab to get more money before you even take your animal in. It gives you and your vet (if needed) information on what to expect from the toxin/effects and what the best treatments are. You also might save yourself money if you call the number before you take them to the vet and they tell you what they ate isn’t actually toxic or at a toxic dose etc, especially after hours as the call is usually cheaper than an emergency vet visit fee. It’s impossible for a general vet or emergency vet to have/keep up on every toxic thing, doses and symptoms so it’s best to have expert guidance when it’s available! It really is a great resource for pet owners and vets!
pet ERs should have a subscription to pet poison hotline advice tho, logically... nice that sounds like the service in your country allows non-professionals to access the hotline too.
For the stains, I would suggest spot treating before you wash. It's the heat from the drier that seals in the stain. So if you spot clean first and let it air dry, if the spot treatment didn't work you can try again. And every stain is different as to how to get it out but for white clothing items I like to use Clorox Bleach Pen. And then Clorox has a spray for stains on colored clothing. But if it's grease you use dish soap and laundry detergent, if it's blood you use cold water and soap, etc.
I love ‘the Pink Stuff’ cleaning products!! The small box of clay-like pink stuff is seriously a workhorse, it cleaned a 20yo oven that had never been cleaned so slick. They all smell really good too!
Becky's traumatic shower story reminds me of mine, in which I was home alone showering when the fire alarm went off. The only times in the past that my alarms have gone off were due to cooking, and no one else was home to be doing that, so I really expected the worst. After a moment of panic I ran out dripping wet to start figuring out my escape route... And I realized it was coming from the alarm right outside the bathroom. It must have been triggered by steam escaping from the door I'd left ajar. I then had to haul my wet ass across the house to carry a chair over in order to reach the off button, then towel off the puddles I'd left all over the floor, then finally go back in to finish my shower. I've been much more careful with the door latch since then.
My Corgi ate 1 grape a couple of weeks ago that I accidentally dropped on the floor. We live in Montreal so we just called our regular vet and she told us to go to the emergency. Where they weighed him and he was just under twenty pounds so they had to induce vomiting.. he's okay now but no more grapes in the house loool
This really healed something inside me. I love that I'm not the only person out there who has to clean a specific way and wash/fold laundry a specific way. love you all sm. you validate me lol
My mom used to clean houses for a v long time. For Spring cleaning windows, we used a bucket of hot water with a drop of dawn dish soap, a drop of Pert shampoo (green bottle? Super cheap), and a dash of white vinegar. Screens, window treatments, inside or outside of the window sills..... it takes care of it all. An old rag for the tough cleaning, and a wet microfiber cloth as a last once-over.
For Becky regarding lasering, you should absolutely try again. I have terrible ingrowns and really dark hair but it’s working super well. but you have to shave right before. If you don’t the laser only burns off the hairs on-top and doesn’t get down to the root. Also if you can, avoid the old-school stamp laser (there are new ones that can be run over you rapidly and I found it hurt less and was wayyy more effective).
Vernal Equinox (this year Mar 20), Summer Solstice June 21 every year, Autumnal Equinox (this year Sept 23), Winter Solstice Dec 21 every year. -- My husband and I have a great balance! He plans the meals, groceries, and cooks. I do ALL the cleaning, dishes, laundry, bathrooms, garbage, dusting, vacuuming, etc.
If you have hardwood/laminate floors look up the Tineco wet/dry vac. I still use a Dyson for vacuuming but then follow up with the Tineco for mopping. Life changing.
Matt and Rachel need a steam mop!! I have thing with dirty floors and 2 indoor dogs make it a little difficult so i use the o cedar daily and my bissel steam mop at least once a week. I LOVE IT, it sanitizes with the steam and you can add essential oils to the pad to make it smell nice. I add a tiny bit of white vinegar every few months to prevent any buildup within the mop too
Im so glad the puppers is okay! Our dog also loves to eat things they shouldnt too 🙃 the vet knows bear a little too well now. This episode really helped me get my morning chores done and was so entertaining! Love you all so much, friends ❤ have a fantastic day!
When I was like, 12 our dog ate an entire family size pack of Chips Ahoy cookies and we had to do the peroxide thing to make her throw up. And then we had to follow her around the yard and put pots and stuff over the piles so she wouldn't go back ate eat it again. It was a wild afternoon
Something that helped us with tracking is getting a top entry litter box! There's still litter around the area of the litter box but not throughout our entire apartment. I think because of the movement of them jumping out and also landing on top of the box helps keep it all there.
Spring and Fall have equinoxes - night and day are the same length. Summer and Winter have Solstices - the longest day (summer) and the longest night (winter)
From a knitter/wool wear-er: hand wash wool in cool/cold water with shampoo. Rinse in the same temp water. you can then roll it up in an old towel and step on it to get moisture out then dry flat. :) If you have scratchy wool, you can soak it in a little conditioner to soften it a little.
We cut a hole in our wall that separates the guest bathroom and the garage then put in a kitty door. Bought a small one story chicken coop, screwed it to the garage wall, and put the litter box there instead. The house is much cleaner now.
For the stain, use fels naphtha! It’s like a bar that you can lather up and brush onto the stain with a toothbrush, it will get rid of the stain. This is something I use in the costume shop to remove stage makeup from costumes!
Just had my first emergency vet experience yesterday and sadly we had to say goodbye to one of our fur babies. The staff were great but I don't envy them having to do what they do every day.
i'm really sorry for your loss and i hope time allows you and your family to grieve and hopefully continue to remember only the good and happy times with your fur baby.
For Becky’s foundation stain, use Clinique’s take the day off makeup removing balm or any makeup remover liquid on the stain before washing out with soap & water :) it’ll lift the stain (since it’s still makeup) so you can toss it into the washer after
I have to say, I love cleaning the kitchen, dusting, hoovering, unloading the dishwasher and doing the washing up if we use mugs or glasses that can't go through the dishwasher. I also really like ironing.
Hi guys, Love the pod! Just a little PSA, if you wouldn’t mind please avoid using the term OCD as Rachel does in this unless you have it. (If she does I apologize!) Like saying “I’m so OCD” it kind of supports the stereotype that OCD suffers just like things clean and orderly and that’s not what OCD is. It makes it seems like OCD is just a cute quirky little personality trait and it’s not. OCD can be devastating, disruptive, and detrimental to us who have it. I have scars, I have been late places, I have cancelled plans, I have been unable to leave places, and more because of my OCD. I have OCD, and I am not a super clean person. That’s not how mine manifests. OCD can manifests in different ways. Just cleaning forms of OCD are NOT the only one. It’s not cute and quirky. You DON’T want it.
Lol Rachel say no more about your children’s folding mystery-I am going to take a confident guess your kids are in Montessori and that is how they roll up rugs. Mystery solved ✨
The agony of listening to people struggle to talk about nothing really keeps me afloat when I'm working and want to hang out with people instead. I know this is an odd use of this podcast (which I also listen to for the pleasant overall ambience of polite friendship), but in this moment the strain of small talk is seriously working for me. It's like having a break room but its always full of people asking me about how to get stains out of linen, so I'm quickly drawn back into the stimulation working. No lie. LOL. Love you guys. ❤
I have had cats all my life and had always had cat litter everywhere. About 4 months ago I switched to tidy cats breeze litter mainly cause my kitty has bad asthma and I wish I had of switched years ago. I also bought a litter genie, game changer. So now I need the litter, pee pads and bags for the litter genie and I'm still saving almost 50% of what I stent before. But the best part is that I don't have litter all over my house. They do still kick out a few pieces here and there but its nothing compared to before. Its an investment at first but if you are sick of the dust and the tracking of litter you should look into it. The only negative (which isn't fully a negative) is their pee drains to a compartment onto a pee pad the negative part is if you don't change it often enough the pad can't absorb all the pee. I learned this lesson this morning. I have a sensitive nose and was shocked I didn't smell it. I'm in love with this system
from personal experience, the pink stuff is wonderful for removing hair dye stains. it even got up old nail polish that had been on the counter for 10+ years
This won't help with existing stains, but the best thing to do with makeup is just cover your clothing while you're doing it. You can get a cape or smock that goes over your clothes and protects them.
A) I am definitely listening to this while doing my dishes B) it’s so important to teach your children housekeeping, which starts by them seeing how you keep the house! Also, if I’ve learnt anything from Montessori, it’s that kids WANT to help. They WANT to learn how to clean.
What Matt says about vets requiring a consult/case number from the pet poison helpline may be true for some vets, but it is definitely not a universal thing. Contacting the helpline is for sure highly recommended because it can save you hundreds in unnecessary emergency vet fees (expect a $100-150+ base charge just to be seen at an off-hours emergency clinic depending on your location, before adding in any testing/treatment/monitoring fees) if the estimated dose is below what would require any medical intervention beyond a simple at-home purge (which they will walk you through). In most* cases DO NOT induce vomiting without medical guidance because it can be contraindicated depending on how long ago it was eaten and in the case of some substances it can cause more harm coming out (i.e. corrosive chemicals and cleaners, batteries, gasoline, etc.). *If you've had conversations with your vet beforehand because you know your dog likes to get into something common like grapes/raisins or chocolate and they've advised you what to do in future instances that's a bit different, but you should still contact the helpline/vet to see if a visit is also necessary. But if your pet is already exhibiting symptoms after eating something the majority of vets will tell you to bring them in immediately anyway, and worry about contacting poison control themselves once the pet is there if they need to consult the toxicologists for further treatment information.
20:47 Word of warning for Becky, I've had two people in my life use bleach to clean cat pee/cat boxes and it is highly dangerous do not do it. It creates a deadly chemical that you do not want to breath in. If someone ever uses bleach to clean cat pee or a cat box open all the windows you can, turn on every fan you have and make sure to hold your breath while rinsing and or scrubbing the area with water. You may have to scrub the area and or cat box a few times. I just thought I'd mention this just in case because some people just don't know.
Please do not use laundry detergent to make your dog vomit; it could cause trauma to their mouth depending on the type of detergent. Hydrogen peroxide is a way to get your dog to vomit but using too much can be bad. So we usually recommend, call your vet (they will recommend an amount) try it once at home and if you dog doesn't vomit then go ahead and load the dog in the car (cover your seats and floors just in case they vomit on the way). At the hospital we have IV drugs that can cause a dog to vomit like *snaps fingers* that. ALSO a no no no is if your pet ate a large sock or got into the trash (not sure what they ate), we recommend bringing the patient in because they can choke or cause trauma during the vomit. If your dog has vomited a lot we can give them SQ fluids so they can recover the fluid loss! I am a recent graduated veterinarian. I love the pod cast and all you guys!
I'm only up to the cleaning section, but for cleaning mirrors and windows, we buy Everclear (yes, alcohol) and use that as our cleaning solution for most things (counters esp!) because it's safe to touch and dries quickly. Everclear is AMAZING on mirrors and windows! So much better than Windex!
My mom came to babysit for 5 days while we went on a trip and deep cleaned our house.....i wasnt suprised and loved it. My husband on the other hand has banned her from staying when we arent there 😅😅
ok so my least favorite is laundry. bane of my existence. especially since it costs me a bunch of money. but vaccuming, I agree, is great. Putting things in their place and dishes are also pretty chill. Anyways, this podcast was really soothing and informative, I enjoyed it more than I would have expected if told the topics covered. Thanks yall! :)
On the subject of pets eating things they shouldn't... please for the love of god if you have pets DO NOT have any type of rodenticide in your house. Wherever you put it, however good your pet is, it's just not safe. And once your pet ingests it, there's nothing a vet can do but try to prevent absorption and give supportive care. And it's truly a horrible way to go too, just don't have the stuff in the first place. Sincerely, a traumatized vet student who just finished their emergency rotation and watched more than one animal die from ingesting rodenticide.
It is impossible for me to clean out my clothes because I never know when I might need something for a costume themed party or a festival costume. If it has sequins or neon, it will likely stay in the closet for years longer than it needs to. I have a drawer of lingerie I've only worn for my partner a couple times, because I wear it at festivals or raves with pasties underneath.
43:19 the oko cat litter for long hair (the one with the purple designs on the box) has been really low tracking. I don’t know if it works with an automatic litter box tho
I've had to call the doggie poison control! I definitely had to pay 95$ through my tears before they'd answer any of questions. And my emergency vet referred me to them. It was 95$ for them to tell me he was probably fine and the plants were non toxic and just to monitor. But I'd do it again 😅
A lot of colleges have “career closets” with business type clothing for students doing interviews and internships. Also women’s shelters are also a good place for donations.
BECKY-for the stain! I swear. I know this sounds crazy. Disney World. Lol Hear me out. Disney Basin Fresh Cut Soap - Dr. Spot Fabric Stain Remover. It’s a block, super old school you have to wet a clean tooth brush and brush it to get some of the stain remover on it then brush the stain really good and let it set. You can even do it a few times and let it keep sitting as long as you want at this point if it’s already been in there a minute anyway! I’d be really interested to see if it’d help because I have yet to see anything this stuff can’t get out. No matter how old. Seriously.
Spring and Fall have an equinox, Winter and Summer have a solstice.
It’s wild to me that some people don’t know this. Maybe because it’s not on the iPhone calendar?!

i've used oil based makeup remover and that has worked but i do it when it is fresh rather than washing it for a makeup stain

Becky, you can use either shout or vanish, it will take the stain away, even after washed!
Use a big Rubbermaid and cut a hole for Alfred. My big boy uses that, and it's a lot more comfortable for him. I also call it "Litter Glitter"
Rachel looks so cute
Hydrogen peroxide is also good on blood stains.
ive never been this early in my life. so excited
For makeup stains: makeup remover on it immediately, then dish soap ;)
I'm only up to the cleaning section, but for cleaning mirrors and windows, we buy Everclear (yes, alcohol) and use that as our cleaning solution for most things (counters esp!) because it's safe to touch and dries quickly. Everclear is AMAZING on mirrors and windows! So much better than Windex!
Do you mix it with something else? It seems expensive compared to your average cleaner being a few dollars.
omg Eugene’s only non Capricorn flaw, not folding laundry, Becky for make-up stains softly scrub with a little dishwashing detergent, then wash
Funny enough I'm watching this on the day I cleaned out my garage and currently doing laundry 😂
Hahahaha Rachel not understanding central vac was hysterical
My best friends dog ate trash a while ago and he ended up needing surgery. It ended up being a tampon... He is a little French bulldog.
Try ökocat litter, like pine/wheat but clumps hard, so less tracking. Original or soft, no oder (not sponsored)
Becky washes sheets the way I wash sheets! In the bathtub. It just makes sense.
We have Out of the Closet in Columbus, Ohio too.
Becks get a furrdaddy!! Game changer
Thank you for reminding me I was going to mop shopping!!! 😂❤
I’m dying at the do dr*gs when are sleeping. I’m listening while working and my kid said “do what?!” As I didn’t realize she was listening
You need spray way glass cleaner, it's way better than windex!
Blueing solution is just called blueing solution or blueing! And it helps cancel out the natural yellowing that whites can accrue.
The professional housekeeper that Becky follows is Vanessa Amaro and she is their first brand embassador
Matt - if you want to keep your house clean for longer, go on vacation!
43:19 the oko cat litter for long hair (the one with the purple designs on the box) has been really low tracking. I don’t know if it works with an automatic litter box tho
I love using my swiffer but it doesn’t get everything like a mop does!
I’m sure it’s been said somewhere, but for blood, hydrogen peroxide will get it out no issue, especially if you can get your garment to it quickly
I've had to call the doggie poison control! I definitely had to pay 95$ through my tears before they'd answer any of questions. And my emergency vet referred me to them. It was 95$ for them to tell me he was probably fine and the plants were non toxic and just to monitor. But I'd do it again 😅
RACHELS HAIRCUT
Late to the game but De Solv It stain remover for washed and dried stains!!!!
Seriously.
10 minutes ago the scream that i scrumpt
So many innuendos
Hydrogen Peroxide for blood. It’s like a magic trick, it comes out so easy.
How is Emma and her eye doing?
Omg I once shaved of a whole slab of my shin. It bled like a bitch and had to heal for like more than 2 weeks.
Rachel do you have a rainbow vacuum??
