  • Food is not just something to stop and feeling hungry later in the day, it is an intricate delivery system that brings protein, essential fats, carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins, minerals, trace elements and Phytonutrients to support the way our body works and make us feel our very best.
The grab and go approach to food, means that we are just thinking about the carbohydrate or energy value of that food. It is correct the thing that eating food provides energy and increases satiety….. but it is so much more.
Imagine food like a train, delivering the nutrients your body needs just at the right time.
In order for us to make energy, digest food, make neurotransmitters and produce hormone, the body needs nutrients.
Enzyme reactions speed up and facilitate every chemical reaction in the body. Enzymes need what we call cofactors. Think of these like friends that help the enzyme do its job properly.
Co-Factors include vitamins, minerals, trace elements and are vital to help every organ and system in our body work optimally.
For example, to support our mood and neurotransmitters, we require vitamin B 12, folate, B6, magnesium, zinc, and many more efficiency in any of these can affect the way on neurotransmitters are produced and balanced.
Our thyroid gland requires iodine, selenium, zinc and iron to help us produce thyroxine for energy and metabolism.
We have around 1000 to 2500 thousand mitochondria in our body cells. These manufacture energy, and require all of the B vitamins, magnesium, zinc, manganese, and much much more.
Your stomach requires B6 and zinc to facilitate acid production.
Much in the same way, as our digestive tract needs fibre, our body requires a constant stream of nutrients.
Eating processed or ultra processed foods can mean that we might be falling short on some of these nutrients.
Conversely, eating foods, and their natural state that are nutrient dense improves our overall nutrient intake and status.
It is wrong to think that in a developed country we are immune to nutrient deficiencies. Many people we see in clinic are deficient in vitamin D, iron, vitamins (especially folate, B6, and B12), magnesium, zinc, manganese, iodine!
