I was wondering about that binary input value issue. Makes sense! Good info here. I can't imagine what they could possibly be putting in a hand brake replica that would make them cost more than $25 USD.
Yeah, they’re just stamped or CNC’d metal and a hall sensor. You can make your own for half the cost of the pre-built units, though I’m not planning on trying😅
I actually made a handbrake, with the circuitboard from a keyboard, wired to a switch, which is pressed by leverage of the "handbrake" (In my case, a u-shaped shelf-bracket cut in half) - Screw on a spring and 3d print a cover for it all, and voila.
I use a tilt switch glued to the side of my g27 and wired to the circle button inside the shifter. Just map circle as handbrake and it works amazing. I also used a piece of wood as a handle, attached to the tilt switch
If you're using a thrustmaster the button on the wheelbase works really well as a handbrake. Also if you can find a flight stick at a yard sale for like five bucks those work really well as handbrakes thought you do have to figure out a way securely mount it lots of duct tape does work
haha, I've been looking for a wheel and shifter but wasn't sure if I should get a handbrake. This is actually an amazing idea, thanks imma try this out
@@KameTrick exactly, maybe on a T300 or something I'd use one of the buttons on the base, but for someone who has a g29 like I do, keyboard is perfect until I can get a handbrake

If you have a low budget like £20 you can use an arcade stick like zippy with a restrictor. It costs around £10 and the rest goes on cable and USB encoder. Than you just plug and play without coding or drivers, unlike the arduino Leonardo that comes with those £70/100 handbreaks. If you go above £50 you can get buttons with led and build a panel with all buttons you need.
That's pretty good. If you have 30 bucks you can get the thrustmaster extreme 3d pro joystick and map the axis pull. You'll need to cut the dead zone in half, since the resting position of the joystick is 50 percent. Works easily in asseto corsa and iracing. The added bonus is you now have 12 buttons and a dpad joystick as a button box. 😀
A friend of mine recommended spacebar handbrake to me when I started playing, it's a good solution to get you going but 'better than nothing/wheel button' is about as good as it gets. Worth knowing to mess around but I moved onto a cheap eBay handbrake pretty quickly getting frustrated enough times slightly pushing the keyboard around when I was looking for it in 'unplanned' scenarios and it feels like a massive upgrade... if it stands the test of time.

Give this a try and LMK if it works, because I only learned about it recently. (And to let you know you’re not crazy, CM is sometimes super weird about losing keybinds) 1) plug in and power up all your gear 2) open vanilla AC thru Steam and map the handbrake, close Vanilla AC 3) open CM and map the handbrake 4) save your settings as a preset 5) start a driving session and test it out For some reason having your settings saved as a preset (doesn’t matter what you call it) and running a preset seems to help defend against keybinds not working. Though periodically you may have to load the preset if it stops working. Also, remember that not all cars have a handbrake, that’s up to the modder, so make sure to test on a “known good” car like WDTS. The AE86 Tuned, for example, has a terrible ebrake that takes a while to engage. I guess to simulate it’s age? Anyway, give that a try, best of luck, and come hang out in our discord discord.gg/ewCbs8T 🫡

@@stefanorosati9467 yeah it allows you to be precise with your handbrake pulls specifically in chase where you want that precision. Hmm…well not every car has a handbrake. The AE86_Tuned DLC car does not really. While the AE86_Drift DLC car does. Random internet mods might not also. Try with the AE86_Drift spec Kunos car and see if it works. Also if you’re using CM…Sometimes CM is bad about losing key bindings, but once you get it set it tends to keep working. First, always make sure you fully power on your wheel and pedals before opening CM. If you open CM before the wheel startup sequence finishes you’ll usually have a lot more issues. Second, try closing CM, opening CM, rebinding your keys and starting a race. Give this 2 or 3 tries. Sometimes it will work with just this. If all else fails, close CM, open AC using the default Steam launcher, bind all your keys in it. Close it. Open CM, bind all your keys in it, launch a driving session. Usually this fixes it, or some combination of the above and as much patience as needed, good luck!

I’ve never tried to use a wheel at the same time as a gamepad, but if you unplug any wheels you have it shouldn’t take focus/control away from the gamepad as far as I know 🤔
i tried this but it doesn’t work i don’t know why. i am using a thrustmaster t300rs gt and a thrustmaster th8a shifter. i checked many times if my space bar on my keyboard is bonded to handbrake which it is, but it still doesn’t work as a handbrake
