Beginner's Combat Guide to Like a Dragon: Ishin!

- With the release of Like a Dragon: Ishin! around the corner, it's time we do another one of these combat guides to give you an idea of what you're capable of doing with the game's combat! Ishin is unique in that some of its fighting styles are unlike any of the mainline game styles because they go more in depth with weapons and there's multiple weapon-based styles this time around. (Similar to Slugger and Majima's Legend style in Yakuza 0). Hope you find it useful!

Dude I'm like 12 hours in on legend difficulty and had no idea you could lock on... It says r1 is the combat stance.. lol
I will say this, heat actions work differently in the remake.
They do a significant amount of damage to bosses even the same one done twice. However, bosses can and will try to break out of them and counter. This will trigger a QuickTime event. If you hit it, the heat action lands, miss and no damage is done and your heat is not refunded. In fact, it might be you that takes a lot of damage.
now this sounds very interesting.
The bosses trying to counter your heat actions happened in the original as well, though maybe only a few bosses, they might have added it to other bosses in remake.
You know the qte part for bosses was litteraly in the og ishin aswell lol, it's nothing new

11:53 I've been a Yakuza fan for over 2 years and played all of the games but I never ever knew about this. It always frustrated me and made me wish I could disable heat actions when I'd accidentally perform one. Thank you Devilleon
Sosuke Komaki mentions it in passing near the beginning of 5, but I don't think it's mentioned anywhere else. Maybe if you dig deep in the gameplay tips section, but RGG loves not telling you basic information about their games

lets try not to be rude to the other people leon has said many times while he apprecates the support it shouldent be at the cost of being rude to the others plus it only makes sense to give the spots to people who love yakuza but arent known for solely yakuza content so it brings in more people

Think you should of mentioned the fact the heat bar can be filled multiple times as the UI makes it seem you can only fill the one bar use a heat action then redo the process. Something I thought for a while when playing. Dunno if I explained it properly but I hope you kinda get what I mean. In short you can save heat up to about 3 or 2 heat actions worth of heat but the only indicator is the Japanese writing in this case.

Just finished Like a Dragon 7 a couple of days ago, kinda have a little bit of burnout, but still hype for this!!
I’ve been playing through the entire series for the past 9 months, and I haven’t even started LAD7. I just finished Yakuza 6 yesterday, and now Im playing this game. It’s certainly a breathe of fresh air, and takes place during one of my favorite time periods, so I haven’t felt the burnout. This game couldn’t have come out at a better time, and Im so hooked on this combat.
Im just so hyped for this game i just gotta watch this. Even if I played all the yakuza/LAD games
Lock on isn't listed in the controls. It's listed as "fighting stance" so thank you. I was trying to remember the usual Yakuza controls and I had only guessed RB

“Grim waking” for instance cannot get it to activate
Same for these supposed one you need to charge then press heavy again before the aforementioned charge attack lands

@@henrytownshend6441 There is only one flaw, not enough big magazine, only 6 bullets in each, so I have to go full Saejima style with 6 revolvers and then waste 10 minutes of my life reloading each and every one.

Now that I have my hands on it, the only thing I still cannot figure out is this one "Rush Combo Tempest" skill for sword. I think I am doing it right? Feedback on the timing to know if I am hitting strong attack just before I hit is a little unclear. I think it just makes enemies get hit harder on what is otherwise a normal rush combo end?
I wonder if the heat button icon will be on upper right screen not in the middle like recent Yakuza games ?

I just started playing this game, and I'd like to know if there is any place I can practice moves? It seems like I can't even take my sword out, unless I'm in combat and only being able to practice moves vs enemies just isn't very efficient. Also is there an easier way to keep your health topped off than constantly buying food that seems expensive?
good guide. Also, with heat QTEs, do you do different heat actions whenever you do the different inputs? i saw a thumbstick twist and a triangle in a heat action, so would doing thumbstick twist instead of triangle do something new?
Let's call those "Input Chains." Not an official term, but at least we got something to call it
Input Chains appear in a number of Heat Actions, and change how they end.
For example in the one you mentioned, missing the QTE will make Ryoma finish with a third slash.
If you do the right stick spin Input Chain, Ryoma will instead finish off with a spinning diving slash.
And if you do the triangle Input Chain, if I remember right, would be Ryoma stabbing and throwing the enemy to end them.
There are also others that feature only one Input Chain, such as the "frontal grab on wall" HA. We can call those "extendables" while the one we discussed earlier are "choosables."
(Then there are some that just have a triangle input and doesn't do anything. Still, hit those, they count towards the style rank if I remember right.)

What are the differences in the remake compared to the original's combat? I feel the remake is faster but then again, I played the original in 2015 so hard to remember exactly.

Should I play this game if I've only played 0, kiwami, and judgment? I know that this game will have a lot of "ancestors" of characters from the series. I'm worried that a lot of the references and jokes will go over my head.

Just started playing. The combat just feels really clunky as opposed to other yakuza games. Also seems very repetitive
That ui is terrible
Thorough guide, but only die hard Yakuza fans could enjoy these dog water mechanics. I would rather fat roll fight Lord Nito with Caestus than put up with Ishin garbage.
Such a disappointment this game has no realistic gore. No beheading, dismemberment, or limbs coming off. Really takes me out of a sword game when you don't even so much as see a cut on an enemy.
