    Gaiden felt more like a finale to Kiryu's arc than 6 even if it's a tie-in for LAD. Also, the main antagonist of Gaiden quickly rose the ranks of my favorite RGG villains and antagonists; he's easily within my Top 5 list alongside the likes of Mine and Kuwana.

    It shouldn't be possible to put out a game this strong in 6-ish months. Even with all of the asset reuse RGG is known for, it's genuinely incredible it came out so well in such a short time frame.

      Agreed, it was nice of them to sell this game at a lower price than most AAA games and also have a demo to the next mainline entry, both coming together as a nice package.
      Unlike that dogshit MW3 reboot which should've been DLC at this point but Activision wanted to milk it dry, despite the reviews it still continues to sell well

  • @TheExFatal
    @TheExFatal 9 месяцев назад +47

    Gaiden was shockingly good to me, and it's now one of my favorite RGG games, and I didn't expect to find a new favorite character in what was essentially supposed to be DLC. I'm not even talking about Akame, or Shishido, or Nishitani - it's Tsuruno.
    Tsuruno is a Kansai old-school hardass yakuza, but he's loyal to his boss and would do anything to get Kiryu to help Watase. It's not blind loyalty either, he clearly understands why the yakuza need to go, their time has passed, and after he tricked Kiryu to kill Nishitani, he's still remorseful and genuinely apologizes to him - you can clearly see why Watase would entrust something as bonkers as getting a man back from the dead for him, and why Tsuruno would be so loyal to Watase.

    Gaiden is such a treat to play in a jam packed year of games and for it to be done within 6 months, RGG deserved its flowers for what could be a kiryu's last stand alone game, celebrating the history of kiryu and game history and actually feel that this is the definitive end of the yakuza era of like a dragon.
    From the music, refined gameplay, story and fanservice of sidecontent, what they have done for this game puts a shame on some of the ports and games this year that took years only for it to be unoptimised or unpolished.

    I have to disagree a little bit. Amon isn't the hardest fight in the game. That's definitely JUSTICE. Amon is meant to be difficult. It's to be expected. And the fact that you can use items makes it infinitely easier.
    The fact that you might have to cheese the JUSTICE fight or pay extra money for a character to cheese it tells me that fight is ridiculously hard for no reason.

    • @darthvaderreviews6926
      @darthvaderreviews6926 9 месяцев назад +1

      I would say JUSTICE and the Hell Team Battle Amon are fairly equal in difficulty, it's just that JUSTICE comes in so much earlier that your Hell Team is less likely to be an adequate level.
      But yeah both are ultimately highly unbalanced. If Gaiden gets balance patches in the same way Ishin did I really hope every King fight gets 30 seconds or a minute extra on their fight timers

    • @darthvaderreviews6926
      @darthvaderreviews6926 9 месяцев назад

      @@dinsdag6juli2010 Here are my tips for getting through it:
      1. You need a good Hell Team configuration. Prioritise members with machine gun burst as an ability, as the gun damage from that is absurd and pierces through all enemy resistances. Besides that you will want a few strong healers and then prioritise units with high defense. (for endgame I think ~3000 defense is the minimum acceptable on each unit) You will need to grind several Hell Team Battles to get them all levelled up properly. A good metric for your Hell Team's strength is how well they're surviving. A couple of KOs are acceptable but if you're seeing four or more KOs you either need to change your roster or level them up more.
      2. For gear, I highly recommend the talisman that reduces heat costs so you can do 2x as many Heat Actions. Ultimate Essence is simple and deals very high damage, use it about ~10 seconds in to eliminate as many enemy team members as you can, then mop up the rest. You want to KO as many grunts as possible so your remaining units can swarm the kings
      3. Abuse the smoking spot in the reception, you can skip smoking animations in Gaiden so it's an easy ticket to starting the match with max Heat

    You are totally right about Shishido, and for me, he is top 2, I only put Nishiki higher (because of yakuza 0) but he did everything amazing, since his introduction with the Mask, fight Kiryu, how slowly Kiryu and Shishido form a bond, we did a mission together, sing karaoke, golf, he fighting for the only live he knew since birth, been a Yakuza, he didn’t want the yakuza to end and fight Kiryu for it
    Shishido is probably the only antagonist with a valid reason to fight kiryu and the others to death, very well done

    Hard to put into words what I mean, but it felt like Gaiden was the first game in the series to truly act as if all events in all the other games are canon to Kiryu on a personal level? I love every game in the franchise, but certainly in the middle installations I think we suffered from characters and events that are suddenly huge and significant, and then never get mentioned again. Or big characters from Kiryu's past that never get mentioned. Kiryu never really talks about Yumi after the 1st game, never really talks about Kazama after meeting his clone. The orphanage gets pushed to the wayside (but still drives every thing Kiryu does). Antagonists that stood equal and opposite to Kiryu, never get mentioned again. Kiryu's personal growth and decisions at the end of Yakuza4 seem drastically and immediately reversed when we start Yakuza5. and then he learns some of those same lessons again in Yakuza6 but it's treated like this was a new revelation?
    It felt really good to play a game where every single previous installment was being fully embraced as part of the franchise. References to characters and events from each game, just made this feel like a great culmination of Kiryu's story so far. Substories that have Kiryu musing about Yumi or his relationship with Kazama, optional dialogue that treats host-Kiryu from Yakuza2 (but not Kiwami2) as canon. The stuff about Ryuji's legacy, Kiryu's alias from Yakuza5 and implications for Hanawa, the orphanage and all the kids from Yakuza3... reminding us that Daigo is actually a brawler, from Yakuza2 and 4.

    Agreed about the number of combat styles not meaning much. Yakuza 0 had 3 for each character for the most part (yes you can unlock a 4th), but I still mostly stuck with Brawler for Kiryu, using Beast occasionally and barely using Rush unless the situation really demanded it. And I pretty much never stopped using Slugger style as Majima once I got it. Barely used Thug and never used Breaker.
    Heck, in Gaiden, I spent most of the time using Yakuza style. Agent was alright, but I found the gadgets gimmicky. Spider was good once leveled up, the other three were more of a pain than anything.
    Multiple styles don't mean much to me if one style is so much fun, or other styles are so uninteresting, that I don't use every available style.

They could definitely do with giving him a couple less HP bars or giving the player another minute, at least for "normal" difficulty.

  • @Meeryx4
    @Meeryx4 9 месяцев назад +1

    Idk about the difficulty.
    Gaiden's Amon felt easier. Then again I only had the chance to face Amon in Judgment and Gaiden. But basing myself entirely off of Judgment. Gai Amon had only two major gimmicks being the healing drones and the fact he uses old engine Kiryu's moveset (Including Komaki Parry and Tiger Drop).
    Vs Shin Amon having three phases, one where he removes your ability to use items, and the other backflip spamming energy bolts.
    Gai by comparison was very easy.
    Justice is only hard because his special attack is extremely damaging. But you can very easily knock him out of it as long as you keep track of him and interrupt him when he starts it, or one of your allies will get instakilled if they're in a hyperarmor state (Kaito loves to just stand still some times)
    So nothing in Gaiden was particularly challenging. My only failure was during the first king where Brody had a lot of health for my underleveled team and I lost by time out.

    RIP Kiryu, your adopted kids are doing just fine...
    Side note, I LOVE that they finally added GOOD ambient occlusion and would love to see this game if the engine is able to handle ray tracing. The AO on people's faces (like Joryu's in the big fight where you fight with everyone to keep Watase safe; there's a video of it comparing Y7 to Gaiden's implementation) looks phenomenal having it feel MUCH more detailed and realistic compared to how the first how many ever games using the Dragon Engine made everyone look like plastic toys.

    It's a fantastic game! Loving almost everything about it! Won't write a review here, you did a phenomenal job, but I want to point some of my thoughts.
    1. I hate Hanawa. Period. He could be a good friend for Kiryu, but he values more ill-understood loyalty to Daidoji. He will be an enemy of Kiryu when the faction will need him to be. He may not want to kill him, but definitely will attempt to stop him on every escape opportunity. A friend-like foe, I don't trust him a bit.
    2. The ending crushed me even more than RGG6. You said that Kiryu grown up. For me, he gave up. He is emotionally broken and accepted he will be a slave now. So the visit on Hawaii feels to me like he saying definitive goodbye to his old self. He yearns for freedom, but got crushed.
    3. For me, Shishido is like an imagination of the yakuza. Not the Aizawa-like yakuza, spineless criminals, but more old-style ones. And Kiryu crushed him, helped in crushing the whole yakuza world, just like he crushed his old-self in that moment.
    4. It was all so painful for me. I thought he understood his decision from RGG6. Turns out he is even more human than I imagined and doesn't fully accept his life as a slave.
    Maybe I understand everything wrong, but for me, Gaiden doesn't have a "happy" ending. It's even more depressing than RGG6. The moment before the departure to Hawaii, with Hanawa. He didn't look like someone ready for a new adventure, but like a crushed man.

I had to repeat one of the final fights 3 times because there were 2 bosses spamming Mortal Reversals in the middle of a HUGE group so it was very hard to properly parry then while you had your hands busy with other goons...
    I really loved the final boss, but man having died to it FOUR TIMES in one-hit due to missing the timing on the Mortal Reversal (which admitedly is a skill issue but DAMN it is too punishing) took out any tension and I was just really frustrated having to go through the unskippable transitions over and over again to the point on my last try I just cheesed by repeating that one OP Extreme Heat Action with Dragon Style.
    And fully agree about the Coliseum, it was balanced VERY WEIRDLY, to the point I completely gave up on doing the Four Kings substory because it felt so grindy to get through some of those battles, it took a lot of joy out of that content for me. Even lowering the difficulty down to Casual didn't make it nearly as easy as I expected....

    I love Shishido, he's probably a top 3 RGG villain for me... the only problem I have with him is that I think he was wasted on Kiryu, because of the fact that Shishido is opposing someone like Kiryu who's basically already lead a distinguished career in the Yakuza, it makes it seem like Shishido's goals are valid.
    I think we would've had a much more interesting conflict if he was the main villain of an Ichiban game, since there are so many parallels and similarities between the two of them that would lead to a fascinating conflict (both basically started from rock bottom and had to painstakingly raise themselves up from nothing, both were basically born too late to ever get any recognition in the Yakuza, etc) and it would've lead to a far less hypocritical final battle since even though Ichiban basically lived through the same circumstances of Shishido, he still supported the decision to dismantle the Omi and Tojo which would basically show that Shishido's philosophy doesn't have a leg to stand on.

    Only 10 minutes into the video so I don't know if you address it, but I'd love to see a theory about Hanawa's true identity. Current top guess is Morinaga from Y5, what do you think?

    • @mjc0961
      @mjc0961 9 месяцев назад +2

      Morinaga makes absolutely no sense to me. Hawana comments several times that he doesn't understand the yakuza lifestyle, why people are so loyal to the whole family concept, that it's all foreign to him. Morinaga wasn't a nobody in the Tojo Clan, he would surely understand all of those things.
      Also I think Kiryu would have recognized Morinaga, he was a major part of Kiryu's story in 5, not somebody he'd just forget. But Kiryu was completely surprised when Hawana revealed he knew Kiryu before.
      I think it's more likely that Hanawa isn't anyone we know. He's a nobody. He's what Takasugi originally was to Shinada: just some guy, not important at all, but then he comes back in a more important role and Shinada/Kiryu are none the wiser until they're finally told "hey remember that guy, that was me." Hanawa could have just been a passenger, or been a driver for a rival company - remember how Kiryu had to make amends because Daigo got in his taxi? Maybe Hanawa was driving the cab that Daigo should have taken, and met "Taichi Suzuki" when he came to apologize.
      It's not nearly as interesting an answer as speculating what previous character Hanawa could be, but that's what I'm going with unless I see really compelling evidence otherwise (or RGG decides to tell us in Infinite Wealth).

      I'd say the team made quite a few deliberate points to lead us into that direction. The two of them being the same person would make a lot of sense (and actually help undo yet another issue with the way Y5's story unfolded). A fun idea for a video as well, so I appreciate your comment!

    The combat is good, but it's definitely NOT phenomenal. I feel that the game is actually quite bad when against bosses. Bosses have a lot of hyperarmour and harder to combo than ever. I dont understand why the gameplay had juggling yet made the juggle combos very short and harder to pull off than lost judgment, especially when yakuza style is way too slow and agent barely has any juggle starters. Heat build is also too slow while sober and kiryu loses heat quite easily especially in extreme heat. I do say the combat is fun especially for casual play but for the yakuza no damage community it is such a letdown and we shouldn't be praising RGG for a downgrade from lost judgment and making changes for the worse. We know what RGGs best is

    This game actually surprised me, as someone who considers 6's ending and the entirety of 6 in general the lowest the writing ever gets for the series, Gaiden felt actually refreshing. Adding more to the daidoji and a memorable cast of characters like in past games such as 3 and 5 and not like Yakuza 6's cast of nothing characters such as most of the Hirose family, Iwami and I could go on. I do disagree with Aizawa tho, Aizawa worked as a villain in the finale for what that game was going for, for a game about dreams, having your final boss be someone who kind of has none since it was all given to him was really cool, the issue with Aizawa came from how he was presented in Part 1 less so the finale itself.

    I loved this game and I love your video, but regarding the forced side activities for intensity cool downs - I think forced side content is disingenuous for this reason because it assumes the player isn't intelligent enough to take narrative breaks themselves, or intelligent enough to upgrade their character. Also, narrative pacing in an open game with lots of activities should be left to the player because the need for drama relief is different for each individual player. Need for intensity breaks won't be universal. Some players are okay with high intensity mainlining the game, some players might need substories and golfing every other mission.

    I have to disagree with this part 20:44
    there was no such thing as a green filter in Sotenbori in Yakuza Kiwami 2. In fact, the colors are more brighter and vibrant but not close to Yakuza 6's vibrant. Sotenbori just looks great in either game. Except for maybe Yakuza 7 with its dull color filter.

      Thank you for pointing it out! I was originally going to add a note during that section to replace that comment with one related to a muted colour palette when comparing the older versions of Sotenbori to Gaiden's. Ironically, the clip I used was so colourful that the comment I added couldn't be seen, so I removed it entirely 😅

    Was waiting for this video since you talked about it with Leon and oh boy here it is!
    I’ve watched 5 mins of the video and I dont understand why ppl cant just say that the combat is not that great. sometimes its so annoying ESPECIALLY AFTER LJ’s GLORIOUS COMBAT.
    Kiryu’s recoil from y6 is way more present here than any other game, your hits mostly doesnt do shit to bosses (they dont flinch or stagger) or in some cases even normal enemies, it feels like youre hitting a wall not a human. Dragon style here is as slow as y6 which is stupid since we already have yk2’s more refined Dragon but ig yokoyama couldn’t give a shit since ppl are gonna buy it anyways. And oh dont get me started on Agent style, the web thingy doesnt work the way it was intended to be, it grabs enemies sometimes or freeze them sometimes. Oh the fillers jn the story as well but eh they said its a smaller than the average yakuza game story so 3 out of 5 filler chapters doesnt matter right? The cherry on top is the 50$ price (just 10$ less than normal price). Are we even playing the same game?
    We all love yakuza and know how great this series is but cmon man…

      I won't contest that Lost Judgement's combat is better, but that's because LJ is THE best combat RGG has ever made. IMO Gaiden is still up there, probably equal to the original Judgement.
      I will agree Hell Team Rumble bosses use too many mechanics that make them poor experiences, but that hardly reflects on the game's regular bosses or enemies.
      Dragon style is slow because Agent style is its faster counterpart, like Yagami's Tiger/Crane styles. Kiryu's dragon style is more well-rounded in 6/YK2 because those have no style switches, it's not rocket science or a Yokoyama conspiracy. I also really don't feel the slowness is a problem, as nobody's forcing you to use the charge attacks, and if you do, the charge attacks give you armor to help you get away with using them.
      The web thingy works as intended. If you hold grab for a moment (or get interrupted) it inflicts the freeze, if you hold longer it does the full pull. Slightly confusing but it's not a bug.
      I don't really think 3/5 filler chapters matters if the actual story content is this intensely good. And tbh hanging out with Akame is some really damn good filler, she's a really great side character so I'm not complaining. I admit the 50$ price might not be worth that to some, it's steep, but IMO the ride was absolutely worth that price for the ending

    i liked the game but it felt like there's still not that much reason for it to exist. the justification for kiryu to show up didnt need to be there. and the new villains are just literally the same characters as characters that were forgotten to time or killed off way too fast. idk i felt really really underwhelmed the entire time until the very very end and pocket circuit racing.
    i really hope this isn't the how the prospective future games will be like. cause like its a good game sure. but this was like the most blatantly barren low budget title yakuza has ever had. the only positve thing ill ever think about the game is probably the very very ending stuff. cause otherwise its just yakuza trying to make up for and rehash stuff its done before with new chracters that are basically just older characters. and the game doesnt remotely set up kiryu apparently having cancer in infinite wealth its too concerned with the justification for why kiryu was even there and setting up the Daidoji faction as mostly villians other then your core few. which like is fine but if they aren't involved in base infinite wealth im honestsly going to be really annoyed by that waste of time and inclusion.

    I love Gaiden but this is just half an hour blowing sunshine up its' ass.
    They advertised Ijincho as one of the locations the game takes place in, that creates expectation. It basically being limited to about a quarter of the map, barely being interactive or relevant to the story is a disappointment. 'But I actually like that for no reason', oh well good for you I guess.
