One thing people tend to overlook is being drunk. The drunk status makes you fill your heat gauge a lot faster, and also enables certain powerful heat actions which you wouldn't be able to do while sober (you have to learn it from the skill tree first). Carrying a few cheap beer on you is a pretty good idea.
Also after beating the first Billionaire, you can unlock a skill for Brawler that increases heat move power when drunk, and alcohol healing A LOT. My whole inventory was Kakubin from that point on.

I know this is an old vid, but I want to add something that you’ve forgotten that could be of some use to anyone picking up the series, or the release of Kiwami on PC: the higher your heat the faster your attack speed becomes, sometimes retaining your heat gauge is better for pulling off combos quicker than using heat actions. Every time you use a specific heat action it’s damage is lowered to stop you spamming them
You read off the instructions quite nicely, and the video was in sync with everything you said. Excellent. I hope it came out the way you wanted it to, and hopefully this helps out a lot of new players. Edit: 5:08, you clarified it, but the subtitle says triangle again

It is a game (and series in general really) that does VERY little handholding in this regard I think, it just gives you the basic barebones of combat and expects you to master it by the end of it (especially with the final bosses, and especially on higher difficulties, where you have to make use of all of your moves at your disposal). I don't think it was until after I finished 0 and moved onto Kiwami 1 that truly started to master the combat in these games, before that I probably wasn't even that good really. Only spamming certain attacks and heat actions most of the time, and then continuously spamming health items... I can see why that would indeed be a problem, especially for people (and newcomers especially) who won't even know this, let alone be able to pick up on it, but for me personally that ended up being a huge part of the satisfaction in the combat for me and a huge part of how I fell in love with this series and it's gameplay...
I've always been used to approaching my action combat as stylished as possible as they usually always reward you with more satisfying results. That also counts for Yakuza, and said basically encourages the player to be experimental with your combos much like Bayonetta or DMC.
qwertyMrJINX Yeah, AngryJoe is just finding any way he can to tear this game apart. Put he just beat chapter 4, and that's where the story picks up and stops with the story padding. It sort of is, but not specifically. I absolutely had to make a video to make it clear how much you can do in Yakuza 0's combat. As I mentioned in the video, I found one person on a Yakuza 0 stream saying there should be a countering system. Counters ARE there, Yakuza's combat is deeper than many people may conceive at first glance. Once you get the hang of Yakuza 0's combat and know how much there is to do in it, you will have immense fun with its fighting. But then again, I also am trying to help newcomers. Many people seem to be getting into the series with Yakuza 0, so I do hope this video helps them enjoy the combat even more than they do now.
devilleon7 After watching Joes stream, I can understand why he has complaints about it. Does chapter 5 stop with all those boring text box conversations and just stick with the story? Like is the padding actually done?

I like how in 1vMany, they're just standing around letting him do shit. I'm running into random battles, the enemies swing faster than I do, and even if I start to land hits on somebody, I get interrupted all the time by somebody I'm not hitting. Grabbing's the only shit that works, and even then I get donkey-punched seven times while locked in a throw/hit animation after a grab. This is legitimately the most bizarre combat I think I've ever seen in a game.
Thanks for this! I watched my best friend play this at release (and pretty much all of the Yakuza games since), but I personally could never get a hang of the games and have little beat-em-up or fighting game knowledge to fall back on. Looking forward to giving Y0 another go with this advice.
Knowing that there are a lot of people struggling with this game's combat system makes me realize how few people play actually complex character action games, which is sad. I always though Yakuza was a pretty comfortable intro into the genre, but it just goes to show how unpopular beat-em-ups are in the west. Hopefully this game sells well enough to get some new fans into the series.
Action games is my favourite genre (Ninja Gaiden, DMC, Bayo, God Hand, you name it), and still find Yakuza 0 kinda complex. I'm still finding it kind of hard to dodge and block mid-combat.
theDiReW0lf in case of yakuza its more complex tham Witcher 3. Witcher 3 came out in 2015 and combat is fucking lame and sucks so much balls it cant even be defended. And now take a look at Yakuza 3 from 2009 there is so much skills you can get which lets do so much in that combat. Even fucking Batman Arkham Asylum has deeper combat then a fucking lame ass witcher 3, skyrim, dragon age, every turn base combat shitfest. The reason is in witcher 3 you press square and triangle usually only square because no one fucking cares about heavy attack in that fucking garbage game and sometimes you press a igni, yarden etc or what ever those shit ares called. On the other hand you have Batman with batarang, batclaw, freeze grenade, gun which disables weapons, explosive gel, finishers, steath and dodges, rolls, you can parry you have diferent takedowns and i could go on and everything can be done in combat. While in witcher 3 you have only square and fucking percentage increase in talents. So fuck of with your attitude of stupid dick and die in a cave :-) no one will miss you :-)
The heat actions in 0 seem as hilarious and brutal as in Kiwami 2. Glad I got this game for 5 bucks on sale. Also thanks for that nice guide which should help a lot in combat
I wish I found this video sooner I would've linked this video in a comment to every vid featuring a newcomer to the series. I always assumed the mechanics were a lot easier to understand, but now I realize what I did differently was experiment, when I start a new game I try out what each button does and try to explore any option I can think of
thank you for this very informative video! I keep finding myself in situations where a group of fast attackers swarm me into a corner and they knock me on the ground and as soon as I get up they knock me down again. I just started playing a few days and I have no idea what style is most useful for this situation. fights are starting to get harder too and it's pretty frustrating...
Something worth mentioning is that tiger drop/counters are much easier when fighting someone with a baseball bat or any other slow weapon, as the moves with such items have more active frames, making them great for practicing counters on.
I love the Yakuza 0 combat so much! Even after having played over 100 hours of the game I never realized you could go behind enemies after already grabbing them with L1.
Since i'm not a beginner & i would use in the start of the game higher difficulty. But also i know that this guide will help even experienced player to know some basics again in just to make sure he didn't lost any tricks in the sleeve. I'm enjoyed to watch this =) i hope it will help even for Yakuza newcomers)))
I find it so easy to get overwhelmed in this game. There's so many different moves to account for and so many of them are specific to certain situations, and that's not accounting for there being 4 different styles, and 2 different characters. I just end up doing the same basic combos, grab, and the same heat actions.
*watching him combo someone while all the enemies just watch him and not punch him to break his combo at all* Is the Japanese version just easier or what because I literally have knees flying at me the entire time I am playing
The grab swap (from front to behind) is really handy for someone like me who's trying out a bunch of different heat actions in Kiwami - a bunch of those require a grab from behind, but the AI's tracking is so good that it's very hard to get a grab at an enemy's back, particularly when you've got a mob to deal with as they can quickly knock you out of heat mode if you're not properly managing them (ie: you're running around like a chicken trying to get behind someone rather than punching 5 people at once)
Because of your videos, I got an itch to play these games. I search it up and it turns out humble bundle had a sale for all three for about £22. I've been playing 0 non stop for a few days now. I have to say this video really helped me in fights
I think when I played it at launch I was maybe a bit on the mashing button side of things but not exactly, I was just inputting combos too fast between square and triangle (X and Y on Xbox controller). It was my first Yakuza game as I had been extremely interested from the sidelines for a LONG time, and now I've lived and breathed and watched as Kiryu never killed anyone the whole series. If I knew the combat was more.. deliberate(?), Like.. I'm not sure if I'm right about this but it feels like similar to dark souls (just because it's a familiar example for me), input queueing is a thing. I wasn't AS familiar with beat em up games in general so I kind of assumed it was more about fast, powerful, flashy moves being shown. Actually replaying now after getting a better pc and it's weird because I felt like I understood the mechanics better than I did before even though I hadn't learned anything new, it just clicked as if I had knew all along lol I
There's one tip that pretty important that haven't mentioned in this video DON'T repeat the same heat move cause the more time you use the same heat move the less damage it'll deal.
I took the time to read a lot of this in the beginning, but the overload of text information definitely was not as effective as these carefully demonstrated clips! I know this is an old video, but thank you!! I also didn't realize the extent of enemy/boss AI, and how they learn through the fight (ie, overusing heat actions, which I totally do...) What a great game :)
Not to mention I'm forcing myself to play on normal, even as a beginner, since I'd rather take the time to practice the mastery... It's proven a lot more complex than I anticipated!
Thanks man. Greetings from Russia. I just discovered Yakuza series on PS4 (starting with kiwami moving to zero) and this video really helping. What a beautiful fucking game.
All these tips are good, They're also all in the in-game Notebook. From the comments here it seems navigating menus is tougher than the combat, though.
I really appreciate you making this video. I recently started playing yakuza 0 on pc and I got my ass handed to me by groups. I’m familiar with many action games like dynasty warriors dmc3, and this game is waaaay different. I’ve never seen a game where you can guard while being comboed
Well this is much more to play Combat things in Yakuza Zero - From Start fight with distance - Get set up when enemy fight - Block or Dodge as you want - See enemy what to do next - Lock on for not getting sloppy - Use HEAT Action as much you can because it will be your last thing to do (Money = Experience...) - also Counter with Right timing will turn table as you will. I'm the newcomer to Yakuza Saga hope i have less worries with practice. Thanks DeviLeon7 to guide how to play Yakuza 0 without getting Frustation.
Man, thanks for this video. I didn't know you can shift your grabs or temporarily disable Heat Actions for hitting downed guys. The game's tutorial really didn't say anything about all this (...or maybe it did, but I never saw properly :P).
I know this is an older video but thank you so much for making it! I picked up Yakuza 0 yesterday and while I think I'm doing alright with it your tips opened my eyes to some things I had overlooked. :)
Even though this is will not be my first introduction to the Yakuza series, there are still some things about the controls even I didn't know about, like holding down R2 to cancel all heat moves. But kudos to the video I think it's a great introduction to the game I can't wait to play it. 👍🏾
I like the combat in this game a lot. Only issue I have is R1. Maybe it's just me but I'm constantly locking on facing the complete opposite direction of someone. Wish it just auto-locked to an enemy.
still learning the combat. seem i always get ganged up and they lock me in with multiple attacks til one decides to do a knockdown but then lock me in again once i get up lol
Another tip that works well if you want money, don’t forget you can pick up items and attack enemies with them. When you see them, if you need money you should pick them up and attack the enemies with them until they break, which will normally give you some extra cash.
This is my first yakuza game. I started playing a couple of days ago. A friend gave me the order in which to play these games. Im on this one with my first boss fight with Kuze. But he has been kicking my ass.

Wish I didn't have to look this up. I felt like I was going to pull my head out of my head.
Thanks a lot for this vid, as a newcomer to the Yakuza serie I really appreciate it.
Also, having played all of the games except the Samurai spin-offs.. I didn't know you could switch your grabbing-hold by pressing L1... MIND BLOWN.
I'm still finding it kind of hard to dodge and block mid-combat.
griffin09 Mashing square, dodge, and block is "complex?"
theDiReW0lf in case of yakuza its more complex tham Witcher 3. So fuck of with your attitude of stupid dick and die in a cave :-) no one will miss you :-)
Budliky CZ Lol I never mentioned Witcher 3 you whackjob.
you're pretentious. Shut up
The heat actions in 0 seem as hilarious and brutal as in Kiwami 2. Glad I got this game for 5 bucks on sale. Also thanks for that nice guide which should help a lot in combat
I'm a returning player and needed this video, thanks!
fantastic work Dev!
I wish I found this video sooner I would've linked this video in a comment to every vid featuring a newcomer to the series. I always assumed the mechanics were a lot easier to understand, but now I realize what I did differently was experiment, when I start a new game I try out what each button does and try to explore any option I can think of
Bought this on Steam the other day. Good thing I found this now when I'm in ch 2 rather than further down the line.
thank you for this very informative video! I keep finding myself in situations where a group of fast attackers swarm me into a corner and they knock me on the ground and as soon as I get up they knock me down again. I just started playing a few days and I have no idea what style is most useful for this situation. fights are starting to get harder too and it's pretty frustrating...
New to your channel and to this game. Thanks for this video. I'm ready when I get the game and ready to kickass🔥
Something worth mentioning is that tiger drop/counters are much easier when fighting someone with a baseball bat or any other slow weapon, as the moves with such items have more active frames, making them great for practicing counters on.
Thanks leon for the video. Came here trying to refine my combat system. Glad that you differentiate between precision combat and button mashing.
My pleasure!
Very nice and informative! Now I'm ready to make some big money in the bubble economy. XD
Damn fine job on the video! I'm definitely sharing this one!
"Completely hilarious": pour boiling water onto enemy's faces
*watching him combo someone while all the enemies just watch him and not punch him to break his combo at all*
Is the Japanese version just easier or what because I literally have knees flying at me the entire time I am playing
I have to say this video really helped me in fights
thanks for reading us in-game tutorial
everytime i watch one of these tutorials, i get even more convinced Kiryu is a Virtua Fighter character thanks to the sheer complexity of his moveset.
Just finished Yakuza 0. Time to watch this.
Actually replaying now after getting a better pc and it's weird because I felt like I understood the mechanics better than I did before even though I hadn't learned anything new, it just clicked as if I had knew all along lol
I
Just what I needed . Thanks!
There's one tip that pretty important that haven't mentioned in this video DON'T repeat the same heat move cause the more time you use the same heat move the less damage it'll deal.
This was an awesome video that really helped me out! Thank you so much! Subbed and liked!
Awesome video, exactly what I needed. I’m late to the party but this series (Yakuza) is amazing!🤙🏾
Mashing Square looked really effective
Remember to try to keep all opponents in front of you when playing on legend mode
All these tips are good, They're also all in the in-game Notebook. From the comments here it seems navigating menus is tougher than the combat, though.
very good video, thanks for the tips as this is my first Yakuza game and I'm really enjoying it
Glad I could be of help, game on! :D
I really appreciate you making this video. I recently started playing yakuza 0 on pc and I got my ass handed to me by groups. I’m familiar with many action games like dynasty warriors dmc3, and this game is waaaay different. I’ve never seen a game where you can guard while being comboed
Well this is much more to play Combat things in Yakuza Zero
- From Start fight with distance
- Get set up when enemy fight
- Block or Dodge as you want
- See enemy what to do next
- Lock on for not getting sloppy
- Use HEAT Action as much you can because it will be your last thing to do (Money = Experience...)
- also Counter with Right timing will turn table as you will.
I'm the newcomer to Yakuza Saga hope i have less worries with practice. Thanks DeviLeon7 to guide how to play Yakuza 0 without getting Frustation.
great video, more helpful than the ingame tutorial i feel like it wasnt explained great as a new player
The only problem I had is that sometimes the timing is off for no reason. Tiger dropping people ended up kicking them instead
I know this video is old by now, but I just got this game recently. I am in chapter 7 and I didn't even know about the L2 thing, so thanks
very good video man! i really need it! tx alot again
Glad I could help :D
That was really helpful! Thanks a lot!
Just bought the Game 2 days ago, I like the fighting style, but your Tips helped me out a lot Thanks for the Vid.
Happy to help! Enjoy the game :)
Great video. Thank you!
dont mash square
Me looking at bikes with beast style: *sweats nervously*
Excellent video!
good video. very clear and helpful
Man, thanks for this video. I didn't know you can shift your grabs or temporarily disable Heat Actions for hitting downed guys. The game's tutorial really didn't say anything about all this (...or maybe it did, but I never saw properly :P).
Good video I'm on chapter 7 and still found this helpful
I know this is an older video but thank you so much for making it! I picked up Yakuza 0 yesterday and while I think I'm doing alright with it your tips opened my eyes to some things I had overlooked. :)
Great video it helped me a lot I kept spamming square at first
Even though this is will not be my first introduction to the Yakuza series, there are still some things about the controls even I didn't know about, like holding down R2 to cancel all heat moves. But kudos to the video I think it's a great introduction to the game I can't wait to play it. 👍🏾
Thank you! And it's actually L2, not R2.
Whoops! My mistake.
Sooo, for PC with Xbox Controls, its the same thing except don't confuse the X placement. Got it.
150 hours in 0, 75 in Kiwami, and I just now learned the L2 to cancel heat actions....
Thank you for this video.
Thanks a lot for this gonna go buy it now;)
Great tip/explanations 💯👌
Really helps complete noob like me a lot :D thx for the video dude
This is my first yakuza game. I started playing a couple of days ago. A friend gave me the order in which to play these games. Im on this one with my first boss fight with Kuze. But he has been kicking my ass.
