This is my review of Pine64's PineTime smartwatch. This watch doesn't run Linux, but it does run FreeRTOS.

Gotta admit I love it, I did have a band fall apart, although I've had multiple fitbit bands break in the same way so it's not a big deal, especially for $25, 100% daily drivable, 100% great
I wish i bought a PineTime instead of my Samsung watch, because this watch is a hell of a lot cheaper, and it has about the same functionality, at least what i use my watch for, checking the time and switching tracks on my music.
I still very much like my samsung galaxy watch because of it's multi-day battery life, up to over a month if you're willing to only use it as a watch and nothing more
a pinephone along with a pinetime would be a fairly great combo, since you can have a great watch and a great phone that runs FOSS and respects your privacy
the best feature for me is privacy
I wish they had added a SPO2 sensor and maybe GPS too, would've been more expensive but worth it
Great video! This was a really helpful overview
Joke for the intro? You're about 50 years late for this quote, but there was a series of commercials in the 70s starring a slightly inebriated Orson Wells that famously declared “We will sell no wine before its time.” Simply swap "pine" for wine with a fake beard and wine glass, then you have your intro.
Great video! Keep up the good work!
I am glad you covered the band and was pleased to hear that good news about it being standard sized. I wish you'd covered the notifications more in depth. Another guy covered it a tiny bit, but not enough.
The hardware is more than capable in 1978.
Thank you for the review. I'm curious how does PintTime install apps? Do I upload source code via bluetooth? Is there an app store for PineTime where I can check available apps? Thank you.
Right now all the apps are part of the OS and can not be installed dynamically. This means there is no app store.
Im currently on InfiniTime 1.3.0 "Purple Fig"; I am wondering if when the watch is on and fully charged (during the day) can I go to turn it off at night while I sleep, or does it stay on (on sleep mode when not in use of course) all the time until the battery runs out?
You can use sleep mode or turn it off.
@@PizzaLovingNerd I know there is a sleep mode but I don't think there is a shutdown function (the entire battery has to drain out). I want to completely shut it down at night. Do you have to hold down the side button for a certain amount of seconds or is there a function built into 1.3.0 firmware UI I can use etc?
Yes
Lemmino cicada 3301 music in the background lol
How long does his battery last
Excellent. But, can you change the straps on the watch?
Yes
@@PizzaLovingNerd great :D
He answers this at 0:56
@@OGBhyve ain't nobody got time to watch the video.
🍕
Is FreeRTOS "Free Software"?
It is an MIT licence, so yes.
Is the watch waterproof?
It does have water resistance if you buy the sealed version
@@PizzaLovingNerd thanks!
Grub is better then SystemD!
Grub is better than SystemD
allow me to introduce you to rEFInd
solus uses systemd and it seems a lot faster than grub...
Why in gods name does it not have a recovery option so sealed watches aren't a constant brick risk?
Oh wait it's F/OSS of course the developers don't actually give a shit about average users
I actually was interested until you told me about the brick risk, thank you for dissuading me from this piece of crap.
The bootloader has a recovery mode that has saved me several times, but not operating systems on it use the same bootloader, and so if there is mess up while overwriting the bootloader, than the watch will brick itself. However if you are going to stay with InfiniTime and not change the bootloader, the risk of a brick is very slim.
Oh let me guess your someone who likes windows and garbage closed source stuff
@@synthgal1090 the chances of it bricking is incredibly low this watch is actually great for the price
well then dont modify it. Teart it the same way apple or samsung would have forced you to anyways.
