      I looked up how to safely fire up a car that sat and YOU HAVE THE EXACT SAME CAR I'M WORRIED ABOUT !!! (Very close anyhow) YOU FKN ROCK Mr. Kilmer!!!
      Nice weather is coming and my 77 L-82 has been sleeping since 2004. I was told to put mystery oil in before storage, which doesn't mean I did it. I can't even remember. Last time I was scoping it out to see what kind of restoration I was in for, a squirrel bolted out of my side exhaust!!! I put foam in them to keep critters out, and they said "thank you" and built something inside my pipe up to the head! UGH. I made sure there will be no Rodent cannonballs shooting out when I do get it to fire up safely.
      Back to you "O' knowledgeable One" I go to your site now for most jobs before I bang my head against the wall because of some little trick only you, and the dealership mechanics know. I must thank you for keeping the energy, and sharing your expertise with people like me.

    My Dad who was a Master Mechanic told me to remove the plugs, add oil into each cyclinder then use a socket wrench to crank the engine.Do a full rotation slowly adding a litte more oil each time. Then let it sit overnight. You can drain the oil and a the other good stuff to get it ready for cranking it over in the morning. The point he told me was that to many people rush it, gotta let the oil do it's job and slowly move down the cyclinder walls etc. and this little bit of patience can add tens of thousands of miles to the the life of the engine because it did not suffer any trauma when it was first started, such as scratched cyclinder walls.

      Sagnol A any engine oil will work. It will burn as soon. As the engine starts anyway

  • @joshn938
    @joshn938 7 лет назад +90

    Step 1: drain all old oil and replace the filter.Also empty old, varnished gas from gas tank. Step 2: Add some Marvel Mystery oil to each cylinder and the oil filter and let it sit overnight. Step 3: replace battery, plugs, wires, and points/distributor if necessary. Make sure starter is working. Step 4: Add more marvel mystery oil as well as a high zinc break in oil to the engine. Step 5: Add a little fresh gas to the carb if it is carb'd. Replace fuel lines if necessary. Step 6: Turn the key and pray. This process worked wonders on many a seized 1960s V8 in my time. Once you get er' running, you can flush the old nasty coolant, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and brake fluid out, because those will need to be changed too.

    • @wills.5762
      @wills.5762 7 лет назад +4

      Chase out that gross oil with new fresh stuff too, so you can get more of it. Turn the engine over without starting it to make sure it flushes it out good, you don't want ANY oil that's been sitting 10+ years going through your engine if you want it to last

    • @joshn938
      @joshn938 7 лет назад +1

      Indeed, i mention high zinc break-in oil as well as Marvel.

    • @wills.5762
      @wills.5762 7 лет назад +1

      What I would do is drain all the oil out, remove the old oil filter, replace the oil drain plug, throw some cheap-o oil filter on there, pour some oil of same weight in, turn the engine over without starting it, then remove & replace the cheapo oil filter with a good one, drain & replace the old oil with good stuff. This isn't necessary on a car that's been sitting a year or two, but it will definitely help if it's been sitting for a decade or more. Conventional oil tends to separate into a really thick sludge and settle to the oil pan, and a really thin oil almost like mineral oil. It can totally ruin your engine even if you have a little bit left in the sump and whatnot.

    • @joshn938
      @joshn938 7 лет назад

      Of course you would want to replace the filter and remove the pan. In some cases, i deal with cars that had sat for 30 years or more. By that time, the oil has become rusty, crusty gunk and it's nasty stuff. I always tried to rinse off the pan (and thoroughly dry so as not to have any water in the oil!) and replace the filter before i put any oil in. Metal flakes, sludge, and gunk are NOT the things you want in your oil upon first startup, especially on a dry start before the oil really gets flowing.

    • @nova_raindrop1257
      @nova_raindrop1257 4 года назад +2

      When you ate first trying to get it to start, dont replace the oil. Because sometimes a car will not start. Depending on the type of condition the car was in. So if you buy oil and a filter and the car wont start, you just wasted money. Running the car for just a few second without oil wont kill it. Make sure you can start it first before replacing the oil.

    yes, you have to drop the tank, but before you do, drain the tank, put 5 gallons of gas in, one gallon of lacquer thinner. Then try to get it running to clean the crud out. The fuel system will be full of it. good luck

      MegaThunder70 you can't run a car with no oil for any period of time that's insane to do that as that would instantly damage your bearings

    • @danielvenditti561
      @danielvenditti561 7 лет назад +57

      memebydesign when you start up your engine it usually runs for a few seconds before oil starts flowing around anyway that's why they say you should let it sit for at least 30 seconds before moving

    • @wills.5762
      @wills.5762 7 лет назад +10

      It doesn't flow very well* There's always oil already in places it needs to be as long as it hasn't been sitting for very long. Try draining every last drop of oil from a car, including emptying the sump, making sure theres none in the cylinders, etc. and see how long and how well it runs.

    @Reddogmr57 Injectors certainly have problems, that's why you NEVER let fuel injected cars sit long. The old vette I fixed had a carb, and I ended up throwing it away and putting a brand new edelbrock on it to make it run good. But, you want a trick, put a gallon of lacquer thinner in the gas tank and try running the engine at 2500 rpms for an hour, that may clean em out.

    Thanks for all your DIY videos Scotty! I found your videos while debating how to start a car that has been sitting for years. I have a process that I have used many times over the years.
    I have ALWAYS removed the plugs and put oil into the cylinders in order to prevent the possibility of ring and cylinder wall damage. You dont find that necessary or beneficial?
    I will be busy removing 75 gallons of fuel from an RV tomorrow. I am also considering a mixture of 3 parts high octane, 1 part old rv fuel, have you ever tried this?
    THANKS for your time!

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  9 лет назад +4

      Donald Tenn that is a good idea on engines that sit long periods of time. Me, I would not use old RV fuel, they don't make gas like they used to and it actually comes apart into its components as it ages these days. Give it to some old farmer to burn weeds with

    Hi Scotty! I've done some repair work on a 71 Chevy Corvette Stingray that has been sitting for 25 years. After dropping the fuel tank and cleaning it, filter and tube cleaning for float sending unit. Replace fuel lines, fuel pump, carburator, tune up, rebuilt starter, motor starts and runs great. The trans would hesitate when put in gear, I have to tell you that the AT-205 solve the trans problem. Changed the oil and filter, AT-205 again for umbrella seals vale stems frnt & rear ckt seals.

    I know this is an old video but..... It is my understanding that you should _NOT_ 'dry-fire' an engine that has been sitting idle for so long because you'll have unprotected (all the lubricant has setted) metal against metal. Did you not pre-lube the cylinders?

    • @TuttyFruttynuts
      @TuttyFruttynuts 8 лет назад +3

      +fl6stringer Thats only really when a car has been sitting for THAT long. They may be dry for the first few cranks but after that the oil comes back. 2-3 cranks without oil aint gonna make the world of difference unless the pistons are seized then you could break your seals.

    • @fl6stringer
      @fl6stringer 8 лет назад

      TuttyFruttynuts
      "THAT long...." I'm sure I expressed that well enough in my post. What point are you trying to make, except to reiterate what I said? Also, especially depending on the condition of cylinder environment, 2-3 cranks _can_ make enough of a difference in the world of microns, if not just to make me cringe.

    • @TuttyFruttynuts
      @TuttyFruttynuts 8 лет назад +2

      fl6stringer Thats not what Im trying to say. What I meant is that although you are correct, in this case, this car was not sitting long enough for that to be an issue.

    75 Vega I bought for $50 from a guy who had it sitting in a barn for years. Said he never could get it to start, replaced several parts and the universal fuel pump. I towed it home, hand fed gas and it fired. Crawled under the car, turned his new fuel pump around(the right direction). And drove it for 10 years without a problem. Only put $ in it when I wanted to. Amazing what can happen when fuel is feeding the carb, instead of blowing air into the fuel tank! TRUE STORY

      I know it's an old post, but I'm leaivn this here in case you still need help. If there's a fuse that's constantly blowing you have an electrical problem. what's connected to the fuse? There must be a short somewhere, and finding it can be tricky.
      I can't say that it's the best method, but I've seen someone putting a jumper wire in the fuse box and then waiting for smoke to find the short. Doing so WILL burn wires (or possibly more, depending where the short is), but if it's not a sensitive circuit it can be the quickest way to locate the short.

    @speedy75602 fuel injection systems gum all up sitting that long. In this case, I replaced the carb today with a brand new edelbrock and it runs like a top. In fuel injection systems, it's MUCH more complex. Scotty

    Hey Scott my dad and I are trying to get his old Jeep Scrambler back up and running. It's been sitting for 20 years but was doing pretty good when it was "retired". I'm glad I found your channel as it's likely to help the whole process go a lot faster. Any other advice you could give us on this project?

  • @scottykilmer

    you have to drain it all out, which on many cars means taking it off. But japanese cars often have a drain bolt for that. Then add the gas and cleaner

    to some extent they can clean stuff out if they aren't too clogged up. but of course mechanically taking them apart and cleaning them with drill bits and scrubbers works better

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 лет назад +1

    bad fuel can clog up the fuel injectors and the pump, but it doesn't hurt an engine per say. Empty the gas tank and change the filter, modern gas is not good for 3 years, it decomposes over that time and clogs everything up

    @straightedge779 check for external leaks, and pray it's not an internal engine part that broke

    @luna62ify yea, lousy automatic transmissions and guys often burn the engines out revving em too high, so check engine compression first.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 лет назад +1

    @montysport94 YOu can try, but realize it's a big gamble sitting that long, the fuel system could be all clogged up

  • @scottykilmer

    @TypicalUser7 Yes, eventually, but you want to get it running first. Cause if it doesn't run, no sense messing with the rest.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 лет назад +2

    the crankshaft pulley has a big bolt in the middle at the bottom front of the engine. Put the socket and cheater bar there and turn

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 лет назад +2

    ticking is an internal engine problem most of the time. Try flushing the engine with engine flush, and then change the oil and filter. Old cars can be a pain, and realize if it has a carb, they clog up from non use and old bad gas.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 лет назад +1

    @jlawrodgers no working room on the car, ya gotta take it off. A big job, but eventually it will slide out the side when you unbolt everything in the way.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 лет назад +1

    that's an obvious given. Oil is always checked. But coolant doesn't matter, you can run a naked engine for a minute or more with no coolant at all, won't hurt anything that fast.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 лет назад +1

    @BRLa89 if it has a carburetor, probably needs rebuilding or replacing.

  • @scottykilmer

    @DaBossk no, it's moving to Florida, and now it has a new edelbrock carb on it, runs better, but really needs a full engine overhaul with all that clacking. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 лет назад

    @urx44 because fungus, believe it or not, grows in it, AND it's very hydroscopic, meaning it readily absorbs water vapor. We do not use oil directly out of the ground, it is highly processed before we use it.

    get a new set of points and condenser, remove the old one, put the new one in the same place, and turn the engine so the lobe is on top and th epoints open. Set that gap at 17 thousands of an inch and put a little great on the points where they touch the cam
