A modern Xterra with Frontier drive train would be awesome
Will the revived Xterra be based on the next-gen Frontier which itself could be based on the next-gen Navara?
yes leave off the 3rd row and luxury car bits
would have to come in lower than 4runner prices though
2015 nissan xterra pro4x almost 140k with ZERO mechanical issues to date. Best vehicle I've ever owned.
I have a '12 Pro-4x (rare metallic green) with 94k. I've owned since 76k miles. Only major problems I've had are the common leaky valve cover gaskets. Previous owner had the basic known issues of leaking heater core inlet hose and failed camshaft/crackshaft sensors, as well as a leaking front diff pinion seal. Only other issue I had was the welding on the exhaust manifold downpipe flange came apart, which I attributed to flexing during offroading.
2004 xe with only 136,xxx miles...runs like a top!
2011 I’ve had since 2014. 125k miles, not one issue
@@LiftedXterra28 Team Gen 1.5!
The last gen xterra still looks pretty fresh honestly
When I bought my xTerra in 2014 it was described as the third dog in a two dog race (wrangler v 4Runner). 10 years later, I still love that dog
I’m one of those consumers. Alex nailed it. I just want a basic body on frame SUV with a NA engine and removable panels. Bring it !
That new twin turbo V6 that’s coming in the armada should be in the frontier as an option…frontier warrior!!
The original XTerra was a hit because it was a very basic, no frills, rugged SUV at a price that undercut the completion. The raised rear roof mimicked the Land Rover Discovery and it just worked. With the way prices on comparable rigs are going, there is definitely room to come in under them price wise. Just stick to the OG Xterra’s formula.
I had the first generation Xterra and loved that vehicle. Reliable, and solidly built.
This is Nissan’s chance to basically save the brand. The new Xterra has to have that frontier frame and drivetrain. It also has to start at like 36k-45k topped out. The new frontier needs a telescoping steering wheel and updated camera that’s it!!!! The Nissan frontier is now the best mid size truck to buy by a landslide. You can find brand new PR04X’s for up to 4k off MSRP. If the new Xterra has the fancy roof it will be a volume seller for sure, Nissan is now in the prime spot to take advantage. It’s a shame the Nissan titan is getting discontinued, I think the Pro4x fully spec’d out trim with 10-15k miles used you can find for like 40-45k used is now the best truck to buy in my opinion. Yes ik it’s a bigger truck but the gas mileage is not that much different, tows 10k big ol very reliable V8 and a 9sp trans. As of right now the titan, frontier, armada and the new pathfinders are the most reliable and criminally underrated vehicles in their respective class. I would not buy any other Nissan if not listed above.
You’ll be thinking about that 4k saved when your trucks sitting in the shop, months back ordered parts, warranty coverage or not, and you better hope it’s during the warranty 😂
If the frontier doesn't top out that cheap, no way the xterra would be that cheap topped out. The last gen trd pro 4runner topped out at 55k. So I'm expecting it to top out around 50 to 55k.
@@xFactoryUSA Have two Nissans purchased new: 2006 Frontier SE Crew 4x4 / 2015 Xterra PRO-4X. Besides regular maintenance, replaced one O2 Sensor on the Frontier in 27 years of ownership (That's it). Would Toyotas have been more reliable than that? No, of course not...
Nissan isn't going ANYWHERE, Nissan is way to big and powerful of a brand to fail
Don't forget they need to tune the safety features a little bit. Like the rear emergency brakes need to run off when in tow mode and they need to fix the rear seatbelt sensors so they do not all go off if you have one person (or a backpack) in the back seat.
If they do build this with a V6, I would want one. I've been a Toyota guy for 30 years, I currently have a 2nd-gen Tundra and a 5th-gen 4Runner, but I don't see myself buying anymore new Toyota trucks in the turbo/hybrid era. This would make a loyal Toyota fanboy pick a Nissan instead
Agree 100%.
Same boat! 💯
Took the words right out of my mouth.
The naturally aspirated V6 and V8 are history. They will all be going away.
I was just thinking this exact same thing . If nissan keeps the v6, I could see many many Toyota guys switch over to nissan because of that main reason
My dad has a 2000 Xterra he’s owned since new and has been pretty much dedicated to off roading its whole life. Simple mods like lsd’s front and rear, good tires and thick skid plates he can make it over trails designed for serious builds. We are attending the East Coast Xterra Challenge event this July in PA which we have been attending on and off for 20 years. I really hope Nissan does bring the Xterra back and doesn’t ruin it like the Pathfinder that’s just a Mallfinder now
Are the one with picachu on the front grill xterra last ecxc?
@@chatnavz I don't recognize any of the Xterras shown in this video from ECXC. It's an east coast thing not Colorado
I'd argue that the Xterra and FJ going away actually help start the offroading craze. People missed them greatly and got concerned that they might all go away, so they started buying 4x4s in bigger numbers. They didn't miss the offroader craze - their ending helped create it. Without them going away, we wouldn't be wanting them so bad now.
I had an ‘03 Xterra that was a great truck. I’d be optimistic about them bringing it back had I not seen the way they rolled out the new Z. It was supposed to be a $40k Japanese sports car, and ended up as a $50k + unobtainable disappointment that gets spanked by the $35k Mustang in every category.
I'm a diehard Toyota guy, but I would buy a removable top Xterra V6 in a heartbeat! I would like to see an economy trim, builders trim, and premium trims. What I think is missing in this segment is a build ready trim that can be purchased for a reasonable price that offers lockers, upfitter switches, and offroad electronics, including 360 cameras. Then buyers can turn to the aftermarket for wheels, tires, suspension, armor, and soforth, without the added cost of buying a premium trim.
Z1 Off-Road is doing a lot with the D41, Xterra and other Nissan trucks.
Alldogs off-road as well!
I had an 03 and absolutely loved that thing. People have been wanting the Xterra back for years now that this segment is so popular again. Hope this pans out.
A more affordable off road option would be amazing
In the spirit of the first gen Xterra "Everything you need, nothing you don't"...
The glass on the patent image looks like a throwback to the first gen pathfinder
I love how everybody always blames emissions; it had the same drivetrain as the frontier. And God forbid Nissan would've invested anything in the old one to keep it current
CAFE(Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards are based on the average economy of all the vehicles a manufacturer builds. Sometimes, reducing the number of low economy vehicles by 30k a year might be all they need to get above the CAFE number. If a manufacturer doesn't get below that number, they can receive millions in fines from the EPA.
Blame woke California for creating the EPA and all this radical environmentalists woke groups and California getting into every states and say be more woke with crap EVs
@@razorback02 correct. This is why with EV sales beginning to slow companies are still releasing them because EV’s help drive the CAFE averages down.
Go NISSAN! Love that. Hope it will be more old school than what we see in vehicles these days, TECH mania.
Alex and Tommy you guys are awesome! Keep it coming!
Thanks for the video guys. I'm so hyped. And love when people post videos about a potential new xterra. Let us know when u have more news!
Nissan has the Nissan Terra over seas, based on the D23. Which is a beauty, will love to see one SUV based on the Frontier!
In the spirit of the first gen Xterra "Everything you need, nothing you don't"...
👌
Amen
Totally agree with the strong points of the Nissan. Simplicity and reliability.
I have a 2015 model. It is a great running truck. Very solid and a throw back to a simple, yet effective design. The interior hasn’t aged as bad as I thought it had either.
This is awesome! Loved the 2 Xterras I’ve owned!
I couldn’t agree more. We need a body on frame suv with a summer mode and a winter mode and under 40k. That was all well stated, not a lot of fat in this video. Good job guys.
It's funny to me, reading comments about people needing something bigger than a 1st-gen XTerra because they have 1 carseat/kid.
We did just fine with a carseat in a Suzuki SX4. We even did the occasional roadtrip with 3 adults and the carseat. A roof-box and a hitch-rack make it easy, but we often didn't even need either.
I use a Crosstrek similarly now. Our 1st-gen Highlander easily fits its full capacity of 7ppl and their luggage too, for trips to/from the airport.
For trips with all the toys, either vehicle can also pull a trailer.
Maybe many people need to learn how to pack better.
I had a 2005 Xterra with 2 kids. My wife and I had no issues on road trips. The only reason I got rid of it is because we had a 3rd child and bought a bigger camper.
Please, do the front end from the frontier, not the typical Nissan tapered grill.
I love my 06 Xterra even though it's just a cheap work truck and I beat it as such. It's got a few small things wrong at 170K but it still gets nearly 20MPG even loaded past payload and drives incredibly smooth. I'd consider a new one, but it HAS to be manual and 4x4 or I'll just hang onto what I've got and get an older frontier in 6 speed when the X retires.
If they bring a new Xterra to market on the new Frontier platform and powertrain, my second gen Frontier will be sitting at my local Nissan dealer's used car lot. Nissan needs to bring the Xterra back.
Nissan is coming back! I miss the original Pathfinder
Alex is great. Need more of him on tfl
I do have a Nissan as well that most don't even know exists, a 93 Patrol GR V6 turbo diesel 5 speed 4x4 2 door version, we brought it to the states from back home 3 months before covid started, it has a total of 213.160 km been in our family since new, all we did to it was a lift and bigger tires the rest is all stock, and besides it we have a 21 Land Cruiser and a 22 4runner trd pro both bought new, and im done with new cars for many years to come.
Good job guys! Who ever made your prototypes knocked it out of the park and I hope Nissan follows through this time:)
That Frontier with the drop down mid gate would be amazing! Build that and the X-Terra both with V6. Removeable roof and rubber floors. The new 4R will be a quick redesign.
Yes! I just got a '15 Pro4X Xterra!
Previous X’s were based on the frontier. Would be ideal to keep that heritage.
Nissan is doing well updating their lineup. I think the long wait potentially could work in their favor due to the uncertainty (what is gonna sell vs what is gonna last) in the current market.
A v6 any day over a 4
I think Nissan has a real good opportunity here. What they need to do is save money and go old school and be one of the only off-roaders that's old school where you have a manual transmission option. You have a manual transfer case manual hubs. It needs to have at least a rear locker. I'd recommend having a front locker too though, And I know there's probably not a chance of getting a manual cable or linkage engaged locker in an oem car even though I think that would be awesome. And I would totally trade in my car and buy that if there was one like that where everything was manual And then you wouldn't have to worry about airlines getting cut or electronics not working or putting it in drive in reverse 15 times to try and get the locker to engage or disengage you could actually feel it happening and I think people who buy those off-roaders would really like that. especially the way that everything's getting automated like I heard with the Toyota how you can't lock the rear diff unless you're in low range. that's just ridiculous or like if you use the terrain select you can't manually change other things and if they could make stuff more. A la carte like I love Ford bronco with the Sasquatch package because you could get a base model and throw on the Sasquatch package and you have a almost unstoppable off-roader and you don't have to get the crazy upper trims to do it but that would be. My recommendation is to keep everything as manual as possible and that should cut the cost too. And then they could also just stick with the 3.8 engine. It's cheaper. It's less complex, although I'd love to see a straight six. I know that's not going to happen and maybe even at Diesel option. Although you can't beat that instant torque in a gas engine at least from a turbo four banger with a tiny turbo.
Yeah. That’s going to save the brand. Offer what only very few want.
Since 2018, Nissan has sold exclusively in some Asian markets such as the Philippines the Nissan Terra, which is basically a 4x4 SUV on a chassis based on the Nissan Frontier. They have never wanted to say the reasons for not exporting it to other countries.
Did Alex draw those Xterra conceps? Looks amazing!
YOU GUYS ARE SPOT ON. Personally, I much prefer the normally aspirated engines, so Nissan are you listening? I will never pay $64K plus for a midsized ever. Thanks guys, good show on a fun topic
I think it's funny how they always try to make people think that naturally aspirated engines are inferior antique technology that are not fuel efficient. There are plenty of things you can do to a naturally aspirated engine to improve fuel economy. But you can't improve the fuel economy of a turbocharged engine because it uses fuel as an engine coolant and dumps the unburned fuel into the catalytic converter. Small displacement turbocharged engines in trucks are bigger gas guzzling pigs than a V8. If Nissan offers a free flowing performance intake/exhaust, high flow catalytic converter, and adjusts the engine tune, they could improve fuel economy and horsepower/torque. After I replaced the stock muffler on my truck with a Cherrybomb Vortex, my fuel economy improved by 2 MPG. However, then I replaced the 16-inch rims with 18-inch rims and fuel economy dropped by 2 MPG.
@@aerynlovell4754what? Unburned fuel doesn’t get dumped into the cat unless there is a problem. Also, I don’t doubt that you got better mpg with a free flowing exhaust, it also was very likely worse on emissions which is the other component of why manufacturers are resorting to small displacement turbo engines. It’s not just fuel economy. If not for the emissions and fuel economy standards, Toyota would put the diesel from the Hilux in these.
Until last week I had a 2004 Xterra. It has been my favorite daily driver I have ever had. But with a kid it was starting to get cramped. I considered a newer roomier Xterra, but finding one in good shape, with low miles, and not ridiculously priced was not easy. I ended up getting an older extremely low mile crew cab Dodge Ram that will eventually also replace my 2007 Nissan Titan farm/work truck that has almost 400,000 major repair free miles. If it ever decides to give up the ghost and the Dodge becomes the work truck, a new model Xterra would definitely be on my short list for a new daily, especially if they stick to the philosophy they had with the original of making a basic rugged vehicle.
Id be happy if they literally just brought back the 2015 Xterra Pro4x with the 6 speed manual at its original msrp of $30k lol no updates, no different design or new tech...just exactly as it was. Dont need anything more fancy or more fuel efficient. Just give me that old reliable, rugged and simplistic SUV at that same affordable price and id be good to go.
Love my 2011 X!
Id buy one if it comes out
One of my regrets in life was selling my 2001 Xterra 4wd with a manual transmission. If it does come back and more than likely more reasonably priced than the 4 runner then I’m in.
Would buy before a Toyota for certain. Nissans are decent if avoid their cvts
They're going to bring it back as a front wheel drive CVT commuter with some black cladding and call it an off-road vehicle
Unfortunately I think you are probably right...
Wouldn't that just be the Pathfinder though? I'm really hoping they intend to create some real differentiation in the lineup with a new Xterra.
Nah, they already have the Pathfinder and Rogue. They know not to do what Chevy did with the "Blazer"
If Nissan brings a V6 it will be a great winner.
The NA V6 is dead. They are fuel guzzlers and anemic.
Xterra rumors and whispers seem to pop up every few years. I would love to see the Xterra _successfully_ come back. I've been in a range of vehicles, many more capable or practical in myriad ways, but my gen 1.5 Xterra is still one of my favorite vehicles to get into.
1990’s were excellent… nice to see them
making another run!!
That silhouette could also be the Y63 Patrol / Armada slated for release later this year.
Hurry hurry hurry Nissan! Call me nuts but I think a hybrid 3 liter v6 would be awesome
I want Honda to hop in as well. The passport and Ridgeline need to go body on frame for that size class. If they want unibody offroaders they can always make more smaller models like the Ford Maverick.
Don't count on Honda doing that. They care too much about FWD and fuel efficiency.
4 mpg is not a terrible difference in my humble opinion especially compared to the reliability you know you will get from a naturally aspirated v6
This could be great. Modern selection is pretty much 4Runner or land cruiser. Would be nice to have more options.
My wife loved her 2nd Gen Xterra but it was a bit small for child seats. If this comes out with decent interior room I think it's a contender for her next vehicle.
They got some dope looking cars coming out, too bad no one can afford them lol
If the new 4Runner is priced like the new Tacoma cost alone the Nissan ExT will have the advantage. They both are great for reliability.
I’ve been saying Nissan needs to bring back the xterra, their timing was off with the original release of it there wasn’t big demand for off-road suvs
Any X-trail? Any land hopper?
Hey buddy of mine had a Nissan 4 x 4, I don’t expect anyone to understand this unless you’re from Canada he never plugged that vehicle and it always started
I'm betting this won't be popular, but this is specifically the time they *shouldn't* be releasing a new Xterra. Segment got too crowded. For years, it was basically only the Wrangler and a really outdated Toyota product. *That* was the time, but Nissan was sleeping. Now, not only are there more flavors of Wranglers, but there's a new Bronco, the LC was repositioned on the market, and that outdated Toyota product has been redesigned and is about to go on sale. I'm not dogmatic about a new Xterra not working, but I see it as an extreme risk for Nissan.
If it comes in at a lower price point than 4 runner and a v6 no hybrid I am interested. I dont care about removable stuff. I currently own a 4th gen 4 runner and will run it to the ground. Had 2 JK wranglers. Only interested in reliability and function at this point in any vehicle product.
Exactly. The segment is so hot right now. It's definitely not saturated yet. There is room for a lower priced alternative because people are tired of these new cool and simple midsize offroaders getting into the 60s. It's absurd.
Xterra was great. Still is. If they bring it back, hoping it uses the Frontier everything, especially that V6
For a second there i thought Nissan already announced a new Xterra
Well, we got the pricing of the new Trd Pro Tacoma and if the 4Runner is still more expensive than the Tacoma like it used to be the trd pro will probably be 70,000
I'd love to see the Xterra come back, but also would love to see Ford bring the Everest to North America. 4Runner just doesn't have any competition in the body on frame SUV category other than other Toyota/Lexus products.
The Everest needs to come here as a 5-passenger off-road capable SUV. The Explorer already covers the 7-passenger family crossover market.
I still have my 2005 Xterra, love it. The only way I would get rid of it is if a new and improved Xterra is released.
Toyota really dropped the ball on this new 4x4 generation. They have basically two SUVs that are the same, the LC and 4R.. one of those should have been open top.. something we all have been wanting from Toyota since 1990.
Go NISSAN!
Hay - quit dogging my '19 Frontier! Built outta non - breakeum, lastforeverum....
Lol nissan will botch this GUARANTEED.. LET them try
What do you guys think of all the Chinese Manufacturers, specially the Tank 300 model type of vehicles?
A returning xterra should dispense with any fancy trim. Stick with a base, mid and pro4x or just 2 trim levels
Yes, please but it better be quick! After dumping the Titan they should have the production capacity.
SUV craze began in the early 90’s. Xterre in the Middle East area i4
I'm gonna be so mad if it's going to be a unibody with rear independent suspension.
This is awesome Nissan make it happen listen to your fans. Also hear about the Rogue rock creek we need this become a reality
Are you guys doing the 2025 Infinity QX80?!
What Nissan USA/NA should do is to dump the existing Frontier, and move to the Global Nissan Navara/Mitsubishi Triton platform. It is at least 2 generations ahead of the classic Frontier. Then, use the Navara platform for the new XTerra. They would also have to look into getting new powerplants for the new vehicles. Something with much better fuel economy while retaining a similar power and torque outputs. That could mean going with a new turbocharged and/or hybrid powerplant. just my 2 pennies.
BTW, there is a Nissan Terra in the Asian market that looks remarkably like the last gen XTerra.
If they want to match or 'beat' Toyota at their game, then they must bring both the X-terra and Frontier Warrior with the 3.5TT unit out of the upcoming Armada.
Like the old Pulsar meets the Bushmaster
What is a Foriener?
I'm sure it will have a quad-turbo 500cc hybrid motor with a "sport" CVT.
Starting at 37k? If Nissan made a base S 4x4 at 29k they would sell all day every day, make the SL/pro 4x be 37k fully loaded.
Give that 3.8 v6 some mild supercharging like they did in the early 2000’s. It would be a refreshing change from all the turbo’s flooding the market.
@z1offroad is about to start selling an aftermarket supercharger for the new frontier:)
@@scott8238 That’s great news!!!
Supercharging is dead thanks to emission regulations.
Besides the Xterra, Nissan should aim for the Toyota Land Cruiser 250 (or Prado Mk5 in markets such as Australia) with an old-school sub-Y63 BoF SUV inspired by older Patrol SUVs such as the one found in George Michael's holiday classic Last Christmas. It may be called Patrol Sport or Patrol Safari in markets where Patrol Y63 is sold, and simply Patrol all across Europe and perhaps in North America. It could also be sold in Japan as the revived Safari.
The Patrol is already here. It's called the Armada. A version similar to the Land Cruiser Prado is unlikely since that would interfere with the Xterra.
@@johnnymason2460 The Y62 Patrol/Armada is more of a Middle East/Australia-friendly behemoth rather than a North American one. The Y63 Armada could end up with the same fate as the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 back in 2021. The Patrol-based LC250/Prado rival isn't related to the North American Frontier pickup at all.
Most Nissan dealers still have no idea how to sell a truck. The biggest issue is the dealers want to sell Altimas and Rogues. I say make a separate truck brand like Ram and specific truck dealers. These suburban dealers are just terrible at selling trucks.
This is actually very true. I never saw or heard any advertisements for the Titan, which is why they never sold any. I rarely saw them at the dealership.
I hardly hear anything about the Frontier, either. I had to order my Pro4x. They only had 2 SVs on the lot at any given time.
Creating a separate truck brand is absolutely stupid! Look what it did to Dodge. Now people are saying that Dodge should go away. Absolutely stupid!!!
The Xterra did well for one generation, but sales dropped 75% for the 2nd-gen, so Nissan was right to pull it. They should bring it back, because they need an off-road SUV, not just a bunch of crossovers
However, the newer gen Frontier reliability isn't good compared to the previous gen!
Make the xTerra off the Varaga . That would blow away the public. I have a 2012 pro-4x. It goes anywhere just limited by its ground clearance.
Their suspension wasn't to be desired when it comes to aftermarket parts. But if it's affordable with a v6 I'll switch from Toyota
Take my money!
Would that be possible, considering the Nissan Terra or Nissan X-terra is already in the Asian and Middle East? Nissan Terra or Nissan X-terra is an SUV that is based on the Nissan Navara pick up.
GET IT DONE NISSAN!!
Im amazed at how this 1.41M sub channel only got 165 views in 9 min
