Jay Leno has said “The last of the old is often better than the first of the new”.
He was talking about the children locked in his basement
He, but also anyone with common sense lol. The first generation of any new model is more likely to have issues then the last year of a production run.
He probably said it right after stealing Conan's job. 😂
@@revefamilyvideos3018😂😂😂😂
If it is made in Japan, it is better no matter what; new or old.
Wait until the 2050 9th generation 4Runner with one cylinder, quad turbo, methane gas powered making 1,055 horsepower for $135,000. That’s the one to get.
Just 135k? You are generous lol
@@lunamaria1048 Agreed. It will probably be more like $300k with the average persons salary being around maybe 80k. We're all going to be poor in the future lol
@@WatchMeBURNFuel We are already going poor as the elite steal the wealth of our nations. In 2050, $80k a year will be mega poverty, fuel will be several hundred per liter and these 4runners will be for the Elon Musks of the world lol
More like $350,000.
by 2050 the kids posting on here that think they know something, still live with mommy and daddy, and dogging the 6th gen….WILL BE DRIVING A 6th gen 😂😂😂 history repeats itself.
Just bought a 24' ORP. Actually signed the day after they revealed the 6th gen. That's my answer to this video.
If this is a long term purchase, the 2024, naturally aspirated V6 is the ONLY way to go. If you know; you know...
What do you deem a long term purchase to be?
@@ALMX5DP 20 to 30 years.
@@OGtruthserum I can see the new one doing that fine if properly maintained. I can find original engine turbocharged vehicles from 20 years ago just fine, and I’m sure certain aspects have improved potential reliability and longevity since then.
I have a 17-year-old Volvo with over 200k with the original turbo. It's been good, long-term.
Y’all are over complicating this just like the over complicated engines lol.
Simple engines and components have less things to break. Plain as that.
The 24 is PROVEN over double digit years and this new power train is not.
Stop falling for the shiny new object and use common sense.
Get the 25 if you want. Your money. But if you want true peace of mind and PROVEN bulletproof reliability get the dinosaur
Here is the way I see it. I wouldn't buy a Toyota extended warranty on the 2024 but absolutely would on the 2025.
Yes exactly
5 Gen all the way-very simple, reliable and basic but the dinsour is bullet proof to say the least.
All the dinosaurs are dead. 6th gen all the way!

my stepdad has an '05 4 Runner with the good ol 4 liter. Its a beast of a truck off road and the V6 has so much torque that there was almost no point to getting the V8 haha, much better fuel economy too. 240k miles and still runs like brand new
nissan now is the time to drop a NA V6 xterra
Agreed
Agreed nissans 3.8.
Especially with what Z1 is doing with the current frontier.
As a happy current 5th Gen 4Runner owner, I still miss some things about my previous XTerra - mainly the manual transmission.
A correctly done (I.e., not CUV based!) Xterra would be EPIC.
Can’t go wrong with 5th Gen. sure Toyota will do the 4 cylinder turbo better than other brands but it still won’t touch the reliability of the 4.0 V6
I hear you on that one. My 5th gen 4runner trail edition has only 54000km on her and never given me any kind of trouble. She's my daily driver and my overland vehicle for many camping trips. The 6th gen looks OK, considering it looks too much like the Tacoma. I think I might keep my 5th gen. Love my 4runner.
Acting like the 4 cylinder turbo hasn’t been around as long as the v6….
@@cormaro13not that 4cyl turbo. And turbo charged engines will not and cannot be as reliable as normally aspirated engines. Please don’t bring up turbo diesel’s either.

I bought the 2024 SR5 premium because I know it is good old school engine. The 5th gen is proven.
I just took delivery of my 2024 4Runner TRD Off-road Premium in Barcelona red that I special ordered, I purposely chose the 2024 because it was the last call for the 5th generation. I am excited for the 6th gen but would rather wait and see how they work out in terms of reliability
Barcelona Red so good! I don't wash mine often enough but whenever I do I am always struck by how nice the color is.

@@Rapido20 The 2025 model had not been officially released at the time I ordered my 2024, only speculated on at that point, nonetheless we were all pretty sure the 2025 was going to be a new model. And the fact that this vehicle was basically released 15 years ago was a selling point for me, it is a proven product with few issues and the latest, greatest technology is not as important to me. I’m sure the 6th gen will be a good vehicle and I may own one some day but I’d rather not have the first year of release 🤷♂️
@@Tyler-sl6vg I was going back and forth between this and solar octane which is cool too but nearly impossible to find in my area, in the end I’m super happy with the red! 👍
Could you explain more the special order process? Could I ask for a specific color with specific package? E.G. Barcelona Red with KDSS & No Moonroof?
I purchased a new Bacelona red 4runner, off road premium, in January. I wanted something with proven reliability. It has all the technology I require. I don't go off road, I live in the snow belt, east coast. I don't drive much anymore, I'm handicapped. I started driving in 1959, in England, at the age of 15. People complain about gas mileage, it does not make much sense to me, most drivers pass me doing 80 mph, on roads with a 55 mph speed limit. Driving off road, further reduces the mpg, considerably. I drive 5 mph over the posted speed limit. My journey last Saturday was 74 miles, my mpg average was 22.6 mpg, no complaints here.
When I claimed to get 23 mpg highway driving no faster than 5 mph over the speed limit a couple of commenters went ballistic and called me a liar. So prepare yourself to be attacked by those that don’t have much driving skills.
I have on order TRD off road premium, solar octane. It’s still on the boat. I still drive my 3rd gen 1996 4Runner with 275,000. I wanted one of the last old school Toyotas
I like my current 2020 4Runner. I can’t afford to upgrade. The only reason I would upgrade is for better fuel economy but our second car is a Corolla Hybrid so it evens out.
I'm keeping my 5th gen 4runner
Same here
I’m keeping my 4th gen 4Runner.

I’m keeping my 3rd gen.

Probably the 2024 4Runner will last longer just for the fact there is no turbo to worry and is a proper V6 engine.
The turbo four prolly has 30% fewer moving parts to wear out and fail. And it won’t need to rev high for much of its life. Turbocharging is decades old technology, used in most commercial vehicles. Toyota could have messed it up but I suspect the new power train will be fine.
😅
Dream 4Runner is not going to be made. It would be a white trailhunter with an 8 cylinder.
Source: trust me bro.

Strongly considered picking up one of the last fifth generations. Then I realized my ‘16 only has 70k and has a at least 20 years of service remaining. Plus I’d be better off investing the $20k it would cost.
My wife drives a ‘15 with 40k miles hah.
Thank you Andre. Great video
All the people who used to talk about Toyota reliability and standards now suddenly believe they know better than Toyota with the new engines lol.
It doesn’t matter if the consumer is right or wrong. If they think the v6 is better, they won’t buy the new 4 cylinder, which will only harm Toyota. The consumer will just move to a different company or stick to their old 4Runners. That is the gamble that Toyota is taking.
Most of the time consumers don't know what they want and they need some herding. I know this statement sounds arrogant but it is necessary otherwise consumer trends would eventually become stuck in such a way that the products won't be able to answer consumer demands and also regulations imposed on by governing bodies.
We go through this every time. Everyone said Ford was nuts when it introduced the first 3.5 turbo V6 in the F150. And years later reliability has proven to be excellent. Time will show here that this turbo 4 will be reliable. Tale as old as time.
I'm only buying a Tacoma now because it comes in a Hybrid. A lot of people are tired at 19Mpg. But not only that it's faster now.

Bought a 2024 4runner TRD off road premium. Got a great deal and true and tested reliability. May upgrade to 6th gen once I am comfortable that it is as reliable.

Thanks for the great footage TFL! I have a 2020 4Runner SR5 Premium in Nautical Blue with 14k. Probably not going to upgrade just yet since mine is still new. But I can't lie, I do love the look of the 6th gen and if things change after the next 5 years, I'll consider it 🙃
I picked up a ‘23 SR5 Premium. I figured they’d go turbo and Tundra had its problems. In all of my years I have never needed lockers and always managed to get where I needed to go but then again I’ve never been into heavy rock crawling or using my rig as a boat through 3’ or more of mud. I simply like over landing.

One thing that I really like about the limited, is that it has full-time all-wheel-drive. I’ll look at it more like it’s a luxury-ish SUV that also has the full capability of the legacy 4Runner.
Toyota missed the mark BADLY when they didn't include full-time 4WD on more trims...
End of March 24 I picked up a new 4R TRD ORP W/KDSS

Did they change the seating position from the 2024 to the 2025??
I just bought me a week ago a new 2024 TRD-ORP in Ice-Cap with KDSS & mtm. List price with all options was $52,116.00, and the dealer had a $3,500.00 off sale, plus I was able to negotiate another $1,500.00 off. All in all I paid $47,116.00, which I thought was a good deal. I may buy me a new 4cylinder turbo model in five years or so, but I'm going to love my "old" V6 4Runner for now! :)
My 2007 Limited 4Runner was totaled by rust (it was my grandpas in VT). First wanted to get a 2024 Taco TRD-ORP or 4Runner TRD-ORP but prices were around or above what you are saying. Spent $41K to get a loaded 2022 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon with 14K miles that was used by dealer as a loaner. They inspected and changed oil, lube, filters every 2K miles or so. Did I make the right call?
I got mine with ice-cap 2024 ORP premium, kdss, cameras, heated seats, steering wheel etc for $48,000.
$47K for that ORP after tax is a great deal. Enjoy the awesome vehicle!

I feel so much better with how reliable the new Tundra is for 20% more.

I'm really wondering about the flat load space? On the hybrid if you put the seat half way down does it create a flat load space like the current edition?
just got a 2023 trd off raod and I personally like it better than the new gen because it is one of the last years of the 5 gen 4 runners, so I know it will be dead reliable. also the 6th gen has a inline 4 with a hybrid battery.
65k plus 15 to 20k of interest on a 5 year loan. 90k after the dust settles is a hard pass. Not a good choice even for those making 100k or more but you do you. Still love watching videos about the new stuff you guys put alot of time and effort it shows.
30% of new car buyers pay cash. Not everyone finances for half a decade. In which case the price is the price and it’s not getting any cheaper.

Most of us 4Runner owners will never go off roading or do any towing. It seems your reviews target a very small audience. I wish Toyota had upgraded the transmission and kept the 4.0 V6 and made the 4 cylinder turbo a no cost option
Andrey, did you say the current Four Runner uses the 4 liter V6? I have a 2015 Tacoma with this engine and it has been great.
You can get a 5th gen 4Runner at $4k below msrp. My local dealer recently had the trd pro at $3,650 off msrp in terra. If you’re paying msrp, you’re overpaying. Also, the 5th gen is NOT outdated, especially the trd pro. It is awesome and has all the bells and whistles. 6th gen looks refreshed and more modern but you’re going to pay at least $15k more initially over the 5th gen.
@Andre I am incredibly interested to see where the hybrid system falls short. I understand in day to day, the hybrid system will be charged all the time, but what about on long road trips where you are hardly using the brakes at all. How many cars can you pass before the small battery (comparatively) runs out? Please let us know when you finally get your hands on one of them.
I will wait a few years until the 6th gen is affordable on the used market. Besides, then it will have more time to prove itself. Also, my 200k mile 3rd gen is still running strong. I am in no rush to "upgrade".
I also hope they make a trailhunter thats not hybrid. More affordable off road 4runner with that built in raised intake would be my target when they hit the used market.

Everybody with common sense wants the new one
The first year or 2 for any new Toyota generation are well known for having some initial bugs/issues that are eventually worked out via Kaizen (continuous improvement). That having been said I just purchased a low mileage used ‘21 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium for half the price of what the new ‘25 TRD Pro will cost (leaving plenty in the budget for some light off road mods) and a few years down the line once the new 6th gen turbos have proven themselves to be reliable/have the bugs worked out might consider upgrading. But perfectly happy with the proven reliability and capability of the 5th gen for now. :D
Naturally aspirated is less maintenance and better in the long run. Just my opinion. The new transmission and better fuel economy will be nice but how long will the battery life be and when does the turbo need rebuilt?
Idk why don’t u look up the 4 cylinder turbos that have been in Lexus products for over 10 years
That orange looks great im person a guy down the street from me has the new Tacoma in orange
Have a 2014 5th gen, love it. Needs an update and some decent fuel economy. Will wait a bit but will probably get a later 2025. Was going to wait for the 2026. With the Tacoma and Land Cruiser already out there being basically the same platform, they will get most of the new car teething problems sorted out. I'm tired of waiting...
I have a 5th gen. I plan on having both.
When I heard what the engine option was, I bought the outgoing model. That and hearing the issues the new Tundra is having with its engine. Seeing the the new one 4Runner, I am so glad I got the old one. But I do respect what ever decision one has and can understand. I just wanted reliability over everything else.
I agree with you on the color thing I have a 16 Tacoma blazing blue and a 17tundrablazing blue
I ended up with a 24 ORP I do like the looks of the new 4Runner but not the 65k probably price tag. There’s a few master Toyota mechanics talking about the new motor already, saying they already been inside them when the 4.0 they hardly ever been.
I see Zero reason to trade or sell my 2022 TRD Pro as it’s paid for. Just FYI reliability beats MPG all day long ! If you want a 6th Gen Personally I would wait to the 2027-2028 year so they can work out the bugs ! There will be Bugs as there always is. I do not like White Black or Red or Silver !!!
Sorry most us can barely afford a 2004 Rav4, not too concerned about replacing my T4R yet. (If you can afford a new car good for you, but are you sure you can afford one?)
Can I order it with the old engine?
That TRD Sport in Everest, Solar Octane, that brighter blue, or the deeper red - all of those look very nice. I’d hope the Tacoma gets Everest in 2025 as well.
Interesting video. What would have made it great is if you had posted side by side pics of the interior and exterior. I personally like the old version but maybe the new one will grow on me
Does the 2024 come with Toyota safety sense 3.0? Or any Toyota safety systems?
yes it has the 3.0 safety sense.
So no recommendation or your take on the best approach?
One argument for waiting is that the present generation did pretty poorly in both the NHTSA and IIHS crash tests. More modern Toyota/Lexus designs have done uniformly well, so it seems likely that this new platform will as well. If you plan to transport family, this may matter to some. Matters to me!
We had a roll over in a 5th gen, and we came out bruised but okay. We bought another one immediately.

#1 thing that makes the 5th gen 4runner limited interesting is the T case. only 4runner that's AWD
Fun Fact:😢 A service writer at Toyota tried to convince me that 10,000 miles interval oil changes are better for the life of an engine on synthetic oil (Not even sure if Toyota dealerships use semi or full synthetic oil).
Toyota doesn't care about the reliability anymore just based on their service intervals.
EPA, development and research, and count on the brand to push a product out the door. I have nothing against the hybrid system or the 4cyl engine. It's the hybrid battery and the turbo I'm concerned about. Short term ownership shouldn't be a problem but good luck after 100,000 miles.🙄
And I change my oil every 5,000 miles on full synthetic. 🤓
You don’t need to change your oil every 5000 miles. Since this is Toyota’s first hybrid I am also concerned. Oh no, wait. They have been building hybrids for decades. Also turbos were just invented last year so who knows how that will go…. 🤦♀️
Id have to test drive it, im sure the non hybrid will be more than enough, especially after a tune.
Rendierings of the new 4Runner? Test drives have already been done .. This video is published late. Or am I wrong?
I think it's worth waiting for new if you tow anything, considering the capacity is getting a bump to 6500 and it will come with TBC and wiring in the rear
I’d be fine with the battery hump in the back of the hybrid as long as when the back seats go down in the back you have a flat space throughout the cabin.
The back seats don’t go down like the 5th generation so losing space, plus losing space with that bump. Very awkward cargo space.
Bought a 24 trd off road premium, after seeing the 25's with drive train options, so thankful i did!!!! I do like the new trail hunter, but don't like the button transfer case shifter & I'm pretty sure i will not like the price. Once again, so grateful & thankful for the 24, like it alot! Also pretty confident i would not like the 8 speed transmission in the 25, i don't understand why almost all manufacturers think we need these transmissions that when driving in town, they just don't know what the hell to do or what gear to be in & lug lug shift shift, where do i go, what do i do, reminds me of our president

@@terrynichol577 crazy take...
So this dealership doesn’t do markups? Hard to believe.
I'm biased since I own a 5th gen, but I'd still choose the 5th gen. You get a flat floor and rear seats that fold flat, versus the hybrid battery hump if you're going for a Pro or the new Trailhunter. It's a shame you can't spec those without the hybrid setup. Personally, I find the interior of the 5th gen more appealing than the new one. More power is always nice, but you're going from a very reliable, basic V6 to a much more complicated 4 banger with turbo and hybrid. It just doesn't fit with what a lot of us think of as a 4Runner. Something reliable and offroad capable but without a bunch of extra complexity that it doesn't need.
When I show up on a lot to buy a new vehicle, I tell them no white, no black, no gray, or no deal. They will find it in a different color, or I will find it online and go get it. Don't settle for a color you don’t want when you are buying a new vehicle. I went more than 1500 miles to get the right truck last year, saved 12,000, and it is in my preferred color, blue.
those colors you mentioned are on the lot because they're more popular.
Exactly! I've owned over 20 vehicles and have had enough of white, black, and gray. When I bought my 4Runner in 2020, I searched over 150 miles and found 2 models I liked, Barcelona Red and Nautical Blue. The dealerships were over 1 1/2 hours away. Got the blue one, an SR5 Premium. I was looking for a replacement work truck last fall, with a 6.5' bed and room for 5 adults. Wow I got lucky to find the trim and model I wanted. The color was a dark red (Magma) metallic on a 2020 F150 Lariat. Next closest vehicles were over 1000 miles away for the trim and bed size I wanted.
I flew in to get mine and had the dealership pay for my flight lol
Nautical is beautiful in person, nice changes in differing light...
White is the best color if you’re going to use it off-roading.
4 cylinder is definitely making me think about one
I love my 5th Gen but the new 4Runner solves just about every issue I had with this Gen. Rear view mirror camera, much more torque and hp, up to date tech and hopefully the new suspension makes KDSS obsolete. I'm going with the Off Road Premium when I get mine in like 3 years.
My KDSS works great.
I don't know why people are against the T24A, it will be fine, it's been going for a few years already and it seems fine and reliable. Ideally it would get the 1GD-FTV, but that's not going to happen in the North America market.
I got 15k on mine. Only issue was they forgot to detune it from Lexus, so after a software update, it's fine
I would buy a used sr5 three row seat version. something newer than a 21 and I will be set. you can blue and red in the current 4runner too.
Man the prices are just insane I bought my 18 TRD Off Road premium new for under 40 off the lot, and when that one got Totaled I bought my 20 venture for 42k, I’m looking at the MSRP on the last of the 5th gens and am just wowed how much they’ve gone up. Now I’m looking at the TACO prices and I am concerned that Toyota is going to price their customer base out of getting one of these new Tacomas or 4runners.
I really love the modern styling of the new one, but the whole point of buying a 4Runner is long-term reliability and durability, which is TBD with the new model.
I upgraded my 21 SR-5 Premium to a 24 TRD Pro in Underground. Got it for $1,000 off MSRP and I may keep the 21 as a spare. I’ve never heard anything good about a turbo as far as long term reliability. 5th Gens are the last TRUE Toyotas. Look at the junk show the new Tundra is and that pitiful axle snap on your Tacoma. And, they are 15,000 more??? 😳. I love Toyotas and have owned them since 1992. I also own two Celicas (90 and 93). Sadly, Toyota is making a mistake with these Turbos.
Should have compared the best version one could get for $50k.
The 2025 looks amazing but I'd take the 2024 without hesitation if its something I plan on keeping for a long time.
Why does TFL constantly release videos out of sequence? It makes no sense.
New ones are nice but very happy I have my 2023 5th gen.
Current one. Especially with the manual transfer case and KDSS.
I like the new design but our 2017 with 65k miles has PLENTY of life remaining. For the 9k-10k miles it sees each year, it should still be going strong when the 7th gen is released 😅. Maybe upgrade to a new one at retirment in another 17 years. Why buy a new one when the current model meets our needs and is one of the most reliable vehicles on the road?
If I can get at least 30mpg highway I’ll be happy, probably won’t happen but it doesn’t hurt to hope 😅
The new Tacoma is lighter than the 4Runner with the same engine and same Hoover dam and it is rated at only 21 mpg. The 2023 Tacoma was rated at 20 mpg. Considering the 4Runner is heavier, I would be surprised if it is rated 20 mpg overall. You might get 30 mpg straight down a mountain, that's about it.
the 2025 4Runner is essentially a Tacoma with a wagon, as everyone predicted. I was just offered a 2024 TRD Pro for something like 3k UNDER the MSRP, which makes me think there is cash from Toyota for the dealers to get rid of inventory; the days of charging premiuns appear to be gone. I am strongly leaning towards it... I had the opportunity to drive a Ford Bronco with the top removed in the NC Outer Banks and I have to say I wish Toyota had made that an option for the 2025 4 Runner and had also placed an engine capable of towing 7000-8000 lbs. Yes, I know I can get the LandCruiser but that bad boy is going for $100k these days...
I’m about fun. I’ll wait for the 2026 as I always let the first year work out the kinks. My second car was a passed down Gen 3 4R. My first big buy was a Gen 4 V8. Then I traded that in for an SR5 premium Gen 5, only to upgrade that for a TRD Pro Gen 5. I don’t get those who say they want to hold onto a car past 150k miles? Why? Where’s the fun?
I’m loving Shogun on FX!
I think I have all I need… keeping my 2012 TE and 2017 cement pro until I die.
