Just bought my second ever truck, a 2016 F-150 Lariat and I love that it fits my family. But I still kept my 2005 Toyota Tacoma 😜 I couldn’t part with her!
It's crazy to think the Tacoma and the Ranger are in the same mid-size segment when the Tacoma would be too big outside of America. The Ranger outside of America competes with the Hilux (leader), Navara, D-MAX, and Triton. Detroit owns America, but Japan owns Asia and Australia, and likely also South America and Africa.
My Tacoma has 311,000 miles on it It hasn't been in the shop much Just basics like brakes, oil change etc It would probably last another 10 years if I had done the frame recall Definitely highly recommend the tacoma I have had trucks for many years Ford & dodge This little tacoma has been much better overall
I have friends with Tacomas who will consider nothing else. I went with one to look at the new version, and we liked the fact that the seats are no longer low to the floor, but wish the reliable V6 hadn't been discontinued, and found the interior a bit cheap looking. But the friend is nevertheless planning on buying one, making it his fourth consecutive Tacoma.
I think it's very simple how Tacoma became the bestselling mid-size. In 2005 Dodge dropped the ball and priced the Dakota 50% higher than it should have been. As a result, potential buyers went with the more capable Ram 1500 or moved over to the cheaper Tacoma. Rather than correcting the error, Dodge left the market after its bankruptcy in 2008.
most likely the 2005 Tacoma is still running while the 2005 Ram 1500 isn't, now the same Tacoma is worth more than the Ram that depreciated in value that has more issues than the Tacoma, sometimes expensive doesn't mean better.
I have had mostly GM vehicles and test drove a GMC Canyon. The new Tacoma is 3 times the truck the new Canyon/Colorado is. The new Ranger looks like the same truck it’s replacing. I had a 2023 Frontier and it’s outdated by a decade compared to the new Tacoma. I now have a 2024 Tacoma and it gets better each day.
To be fair the frontier just tried copying the Tacoma/4runner formula when it got redesigned as the Tacoma and 4runner had always been outdated and ancient inside and yet are wildly popular. Only thing is Nissan doesn’t have the reliability and quality history or reputation that Toyota has so that formula doesn’t work for them much.
Toyota Tacoma king of pickups in America Toyota Hilux thee king of pick ups anywhere in the world ,even Isis or Taliban swear by them I'm not comparing them but showing appreciation for their consistency I'm a Mitsubishi Triton/ L200 fan though
Actually for ISIS they use a lot of Land cruiser 70 series pickups. Which is expensive. Which is why people wonder where they got it from. The Triton is another pickup popular with militarized applications. IMO, the Triton is better than the Hilux.
@@ChrisRobato true but there's also similar to them that has hiluxs , yeah with the landcruiser and how much it costs most of the world is puzzled how do they afford a fleet of these pickups
I want a new Trail Hunter. It’s a Toyota so you know it’s reliable. It’s a Tacoma so it has a MASSIVE after market option. It has a history of being the #1 mid size truck , plus it looks cool.
How about that, a right sized pickup that will not blow an engine at 50k, available with a manual, not engineered by idiots (anyone who have ever replaced a timing chain on a 4x4 canyon will know) outsells Ford and GM.
The Tacoma has been my desired vehicle for some time, although I do not have one. I already know how Toyota took on America's pickups. It appeals to people like me, who don't really want a pickup. Dudes whose lives would be much easier if they had a truck like, once a month. The newer Tacomas are quite large but for a long time it was the lone occupant in the medium-sized truck market. All trucks now are so big though that they're still mid-sized. And of course, well before the vehicle market went nuts, I also noticed how 20 year old Tacomas were still selling for a lot of money. There were no other used vehicles that were that old with that many miles that were commanding anywhere near that in price. At that point, for me to some extent, whether it has earned the reputation. isirrelevant, the reputation is there and it should expect to command a good price upon sale.
Nailed it. Get one, you wont regret it. I highly recommend getting a 4 cylinder version 2005-2023. They cost a lot less (though still hold value), and do everything you would need or want it to.
@@ejmbok87 Depends on your finances. If money is not an issue, then just get the latest greatest. But if you're working class, i would recommend a 2015, specifically the 4 cylinder version. They are relatively cheap, but still hold their value, and can do pretty much anything you need.
As a vehicle, the Tacoma was inefficient, uncomfortable, and drastically outdated until the 2024 refresh. Here in the Northwest they still sell like hotcakes because of the reputation for reliability, and the way they hold value. The mid size trucks of today are the full size trucks of 20 years ago, and they just keep getting bigger. The reason full size trucks sell so well is that on average, they have the same fuel economy as mid-size trucks, while having more power and usability.
The midsize trucks of today are similar in exterior size to full size trucks 20 years ago, but they still are not even remotely close in bed or interior size or overall capability. As yo mention they are also barely more efficient, if at all, and with the big incentives now back on full size trucks they aren't that much cheaper either.
Ford certainly didn't do themselves any favors by foolishly taking the Ranger off the market for a decade or so leaving the mid-size truck market... and the other Domestic brands only sort of half-assed their mid-size trucks during that period. Luckily Ford came to their senses and brought the Ranger back a few years ago, but they lost a lot of ground during that period, especially with fleet vehicles and have a long way to be competitive with the Tacoma.
Tacoma was the first new vehicle i purchased and the resell value is crazy. After 5 years of driving, i can still sell the vehicle for almost 80% of what I purchased it for. I think that is a testament to its quality and reputation
Ford Ranger has managed to outsell the Hilux in Australia and in Thailand, the Isuzu D-Max has outsold the Hilux. Not saying the Hilux is not a very good vehicle, it is, other than issues with it's DPF. But overall, the world global ute-pickup market outside of the US, is a close fight between the Toyota Hilux, the Mitsubishi L200, the Isuzu D-Max, the Ford Ranger and the Nissan Navarro. All are very rugged vehicles.

The only reason is winning is because they are not just listening to their customers, but also listening to their dealership network. Ford makes the maverick. the cheaper truck. Probably is the ford company likes to push the heavier, more profitable, higher margin F150s to the dealerships. While the dealers themselves are begging 🙏 ford to make more mavericks since they can’t sell the higher sticker F150s. People can’t get approved for financing, and who can afford a $100K truck these days.
There’s a reason why there’s nothing but Toyota down in the grimiest, roughest, toughest “roads” down in South America, Central America, Europe, and Asia. I remember seeing Fords & Chevys literally broken down in parts on the side of the road in Nicaragua growing up. I’d always ask my dad what was wrong with the Fords and Chevys as a kid. Since a kid I’ve been a huge fan of Toyota brand. 1986 Corolla GTS 1990 Corolla 1997 Tacoma 2001 Landcruiser 2004 Sequoia 2006 Tacoma 2007 FJ 2006 Tacoma 2008 Tundra 2016 Tundra 2022 Camry
To be more clear you should have included a bit more details on the Truck of the Year award. The vehicle has to be all new or be a substantial upgrade to even compete. Therefore, the Tacoma wasn’t even considered. It doesn’t mean it’s not a better truck.
Toyota makes a product that buyers like because its literally just the same vehicle over and over with minor facelifts. The most recent gen update is the first time the tacoma has really changed in 30 years.
Unless you simply want a truck that is insanely reliable and simple enough that you can do most repairs yourself. Just look at the sheer number of those 2000 era Tacomas that are still running.
I am pretty confident I can drive my 2013 Toyota Tacoma TRD-OFF Road 4x4 my entire life! I have 75 miles on it right now, I intend to drive it well over 500,000. It has NEVER given me any issues. I LOVE MY TACOMA!!!!

I am the biggest Toyota fan in the world. But please make a video on how Toyota did the worse thing it could have done. 4 cylinder engines with turbo on pickups that are having trouble already. V6 and v8 NA all the way.
Toyota would have loved to just keep on making those old but very reliable NA v6 and v8, especially as they wouldn't need to spend money to develop a new engine thats smaller but have about the same capabilities. But emissions regulations have forced Toyota to downsize like most other manufacturers
This happen to me the other day. For some dumb reason the car in front of me had his son on he’s lap. While his car was getting towards the end of the car wash, I was right behind him for some reason he started pressing the break so I started honking confused why he would do that if I was only 4 four or 5 feet behind him when I got out of the car wash I asked him why the hell would he do that? He said I’m sorry OK OK.
Given the amount of negative RUclips reviews I’ve seen lately for the 2024 Tacoma, this seems like a paid advertisement by Toyota. Don’t get me wrong, I own 2 Toyotas myself but the new generation has lost its way when it comes to affordability. Also, not many people like that they shrunk the engine from a v6 in favor of a smaller 4 cylinder turbo.
Just seems like CNBC is late to the trend. Yeah the 2024 isn’t really receiving positive praise but the popularity of the 3rd gen and “overlanding”, they are gonna cover it but show off the newest gen. This is just what happens when something becomes popular in the main stream
Where have you seen negative 2024 Tacoma reviews? Every single review I've seen has been glowingly positive on everything excep the price increase. Engine, transmission, seating position, refinement, mpg, rust resistance, frame construction, suspension, everything is a large improvement over the tepid 3rd generation truck.

@@__________f9433 the 4cyl turbo is a complete positive to anyone who has actually driven it. It makes more torque, thousands of RPM lower than the wheezy V6 did. Japanese made a difference back then with small trucks, so Ford had to respond with Ranger, Chevrolet with S10. But modern pickup trucks grew too large, a small pickup is the same size as the 150 of yore. No wonder 20-year old Rangers and 30-year old Tacomas/Hilux are still around. I want a truck the same size as the original Ranger, which had 14-inch wheels, remember? I don't go offroad.
My '17 Tacoma is almost the same size as my '92 Ford F150. They should bring back the Chevy Luv, 1st Gen Ranger or the Rampage if they are so worried about MPG.
@@DumbledoreMcCracken First-gen Tacoma was a replacement for a Pickup called Hilux elsewhere. Sixth-gen Hilux is very similar to first-gen Tacoma. Since then Tacoma grew in size substantionally.
You might be interested to know that a smaller Chevy S-10 pickup is made down in Mexico and sold for a cheaper price. But it's not for the US market. For that matter, the Toyota Hilux is also being made in Mexico, same plant as the Tacoma.
I highly doubt it. The current Ranger and Colorado are finally competent, but they're also only sold in crew cab short bed, and don't offer a hybrid option like Toyota. It takes a lot to rip away Tacoma faithfuls, and a good 4cyl engine replacing a mediocre V6 isn't gonna do it.
It seems like there's a concern about potential bias in positive reviews of Toyota vehicles, particularly the Tacoma, Tundra, and Lexus GX models from 2022 to 2024. The writer suggests that the positive feedback might be influenced by financial incentives from Toyota or a vested interest in their stock performance.
Don't know about Tacoma but saw a Toyota Tundra for the first time with a Chinese number plate in Nepal 🇳🇵 That was back in late 2023 when I went to Bandipur. It was nice to see that because we don't have Tacomas or Tundras here. We only have Toyota Hilux, so it was so cool to see a Tundra.

I'm still driving my 1998 Tacoma Prerunner, love it, don't even want anything else.
You can probably sell it now and get most of your $ back if not more
My Tacoma has 311,000 miles on it
It hasn't been in the shop much
Just basics like brakes, oil change etc
It would probably last another 10 years if I had done the frame recall
Definitely highly recommend the tacoma
I have had trucks for many years
Ford & dodge
This little tacoma has been much better overall
Toyota=reliability
Honestly I see tundra becoming a big competitor and dominating the truck industry in the near future
Imagine if the Hilux was available :S
It will destroy all of them.
4WD Diesel Hilux.
It would be street illegal due to outdated safety features
ITs the same car lol
@@zezawayHilux has nothing to do with the Tacoma. Completely different vehicles.
I have a 2003 tacoma Access cab prerunner. 285k miles still running strong. Womy be buying anything anytime soon
North America is really missing out on the Toyota Turbo Diesel in the Fortrunner.
Government regulations are to blame for that unfortunately.
Toyota's are here for a good time AND a long time.
Toyota Tacoma king of pickups in America
Toyota Hilux thee king of pick ups anywhere in the world ,even Isis or Taliban swear by them
I'm not comparing them but showing appreciation for their consistency
I'm a Mitsubishi Triton/ L200 fan though
Actually for ISIS they use a lot of Land cruiser 70 series pickups. Which is expensive. Which is why people wonder where they got it from. The Triton is another pickup popular with militarized applications. IMO, the Triton is better than the Hilux.
@@ChrisRobato true but there's also similar to them that has hiluxs , yeah with the landcruiser and how much it costs most of the world is puzzled how do they afford a fleet of these pickups
Not consistency, it was the reliability
Consistently reliable 😁
One word explains it all, kaizen.
Actually, it's the complete opposite.
I want a new Trail Hunter. It’s a Toyota so you know it’s reliable. It’s a Tacoma so it has a MASSIVE after market option. It has a history of being the #1 mid size truck , plus it looks cool.

Toyota Tacoma, Tundra, Camry, Lexus, Rav4 and Corolla are very excellent vehicles. Second to none in their respective categories

How about that, a right sized pickup that will not blow an engine at 50k, available with a manual, not engineered by idiots (anyone who have ever replaced a timing chain on a 4x4 canyon will know) outsells Ford and GM.
The Toyota Tacoma is the best off-roader 4x4 truck by a huge margin.
Agree
That's why sales dropped 60% this year.
@SunnyFly100 Relative to the sales of other mid-size trucks?
You gonna buy the new gen Taco?
@@jeffhufana2389 I would be they're too expensive for my budget. I'm just a used vehicle type of guy.
It's time to bring back the Hilux to dominate the compact pickup too even though its almost the same size as a Tacoma
They cost a lot less (though still hold value), and do everything you would need or want it to.
because theyre reliable af
Toyota recall all 22-23 Tundras for engine problems
I made up my mind years ago that Tacoma will be my first pick up truck
What year are you thinking of?
@@alibabaschultz352 which year would you recommend?
Another great video, here in Europe truck couture is much smaller. We love SUVS and also estates are coming back ❤❤❤❤
Asia, Africa, Australia and South America Toyota easily dominates these markets. The quality of their product is unchallenged.
One word: Reliability
Good friend of mine has had his Tacoma for years, loves it.
I have both first and second gen Tacoma. Rock solid reliability 😮💨
These CNBC auto-focused vids have been popping up on my feed past couple weeks, and I gotta say I'm really enjoying them.
Great production quality for what it is, with just the right length to be very informative but not too long that it requires a strong time commitment. Really good reporting, interviews with deeply involved stakeholders, and very useful infographics that make me wanna pause all the time.
Thanks to the team behind this!
I miss the 90’s small pickup. Sometimes I want to haul something but most of time I am just using it to get work.
The small pickup was legislated out of existence in the US. Still exists in once you get past the border.
I am still daily driving my 1998 🌮-ma 5 speed 2.7L 4 cylinder that I bought in 2003. My holy grail taco is the one they never built, the dual cab, long bed, V6 manual.
Which trim is that dark green tacoma it showed a few times 😮
Trail Hunter
The only reason is winning is because they are not just listening to their customers, but also listening to their dealership network.
Ford makes the maverick. the cheaper truck. Probably is the ford company likes to push the heavier, more profitable, higher margin F150s to the dealerships. While the dealers themselves are begging 🙏 ford to make more mavericks since they can’t sell the higher sticker F150s.
People can’t get approved for financing, and who can afford a $100K truck these days.
I owned a 2004 v6. dark red. best truck ever used. I miss so much living in the Us and my toyota tacoma.

To be more clear you should have included a bit more details on the Truck of the Year award. The vehicle has to be all new or be a substantial upgrade to even compete. Therefore, the Tacoma wasn’t even considered. It doesn’t mean it’s not a better truck.

The real reason there is almost no competition in the pick up truck space. The chicken tax is still on the books from back in the 70's
If they didn't have the chicken tax, we would get to have more options in the small pickup market, like the VW Saveiro, Fiat Strada, Chevy Tornado and Ram Rampage to name a few.
@@shawnn6926 it’s not just the chicken tax though. Most of them wouldn’t meet North American safety requirements because they weren’t built for North America in mind.
@@shawnn6926 Not only that we could actually get the Highly Regarded Toyota Hilux... even though it's about the same size and older models were cosmetically similar to the Tacoma, Now they look fairly different and have pretty wide range of capability differences.
The fact people are ecstatic about Toyota quality is more of a reflection of how awful US Manufacturers treated customers; selling them absolute junk for decades. That's before it even hits the sleazy car sales floor, where you get schemed and scammed even more. Pathetic if you ask me.

Engine, transmission, seating position, refinement, mpg, rust resistance, frame construction, suspension, everything is a large improvement over the tepid 3rd generation truck.
all the automakers are switching to turbo 4 cylinder, especially Toyota switching most models to hybrid

TOYOTA Tacoma offers always-on trail power, legendary performance, reliable quality and attractive styling. compact design and extra comfort
Hilux is not a Tacoma
@@DumbledoreMcCracken First-gen Tacoma was a replacement for a Pickup called Hilux elsewhere. Sixth-gen Hilux is very similar to first-gen Tacoma. Since then Tacoma grew in size substantionally.
You might be interested to know that a smaller Chevy S-10 pickup is made down in Mexico and sold for a cheaper price. But it's not for the US market. For that matter, the Toyota Hilux is also being made in Mexico, same plant as the Tacoma.
After researching and driving both Colorado and Tacoma, I will be getting the Chevy.
next CNBC advertisement documentary in works: Toyota Tacoma 2024: How toyota lost it all..🤣
I highly doubt it.

Moral, American manufacturers are just not competitive
Because they’d rather move you up the ladder to a full size. They did the exact same with sedans to compact crossovers.
Tacoma today is close in size to the full size pickups of the 70s and 80s! Ram, Tundra, etc are more like XL pickups even at the 1/4 ton size today.
You’re not putting a 5th wheel on a Tacoma, so there’s that.
The Tacoma is the perfect size. It’s also the same size that full size American trucks used to be
