    As an anxiety prone “Type A” Gen X military veteran I completely understand the impatience. As a matter of fact my mantra has always been “If I wanted Patients I would’ve went to med school” That being said I do believe we naturally seek a counter balance to our native personality and sailing will provide the balance if you learn to let go and be present in the moments. I start each day by making my bunk, brewing coffee, listening to a Ryan Holiday “Daily Stoic” podcast then on to projects. Find what works for you and go with it 🤙🏼.

    About the diving. One does have to be in good shape aerobically speaking. You look in pretty good shape though. Not too much body fat to get off the surface (fat floats real well). Taking a deep breath so you can stay down longer is important, of course, but those full to max lungs also float real well. The important thing you want to get good at is getting off the surface quickly. Down deeper your lungs will get squeezed and make it easier to be at or around the bottom. I dont know if you're having trouble getting off the surface because of the pressure squeezing your eardrums but if so ,start clearing just as soon as you start heading down. If you're feeling pressure, you started clearing too late. So in others words, start clearing even at 1" under water and you'll find it much easier. Get off the surface FAST, practice breath holding, hyperventilate before departing the surface too. Relax, take long kicking strokes, conserve energy, NO kind of panic can be allowed too. Increased heart rate requires increased amounts of o2. Lol I don't know if im telling you anything new but i knda grew up in the water. Bahamas and Florida, dad had us alll swimming pretty much at birth being surrounded by saltwater. You can even strap on a weight belt to help get you off the surface faster. Just be careful, start out light, and understand how to ditch it quick when or if it needs to be ditched. Learn how to conserve energy. Bend at the waist and get your legs completely out of the water for a quicker descent. I haven't seen your fins but for scuba diving, shorter fins are best. For free diving, longer fins are better. Be careful diving on scuba and spearfishing. There are places that's not allowed but you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes. Surely you know what a boat sounds like underwater by now. If you're on scuba spearfishing where it's not allowed you might have to drop the gun lol if it turns out to be the law. Take off your weight belt, wrap it around and hopefull,y it won't drift off too far ... lol on the way to the bottom. Practicing breath-holdingg works. Hope you got some ideas...hope ive helped some...last i heard, spearfishing in the Bahamas with an arbalete is against the rules and can get one in big trouble. Whereas a Hawaiian Sling is ok. Hawaiian Sling is tougher to use because it puts your body closer to the target (fish) making him/it skittish. I've only ever used an arbalete myself and I've had to drop the gun a couple times. Luckily I didn't lose it. Tis easy to lose things dropped for sure. It's amazing how things can dissappear when diving. Barracuda are pretty much harmless as long as you don't so something dumb like carrying speared fish too close on the way back to the boat. Sharks can be read, pretty much. Always a pretty good idea to have a dive knife strapped on too. A quick poke in the nose of a shark is a pretty good deterrent or gills if necessary. ...Aaaanyway I too hope you fair winds out there. 👍

    Skip the scuba gear till you need it for depth - skin dive every day, or two, and build up your breath. Takes time. Stick with it. I grew up in the water but after four decades of sitting in front of a computer i will have to start all over too.

    It’s lonely out there. But it’s lonelier on the couch. Once you get into it and doing your thing and a few $$ roll in (which hopefully it will) you’ll be living the dream.
    I’m looking to head off next April up the east coast of Aussie and into Indonesia.
    $$ are my biggest challenge too. And setting up all the SM.
    Good to see another person with zero experience just up and going.

      Thanks, best thing I ever did :) yea I’m gonna just keep living and making these videos till I run out of money then I’ll have to get a job for a few months then I’ll be right back at it, but I’ll probly have to stop making these videos during that, these things take a lot of time to make believe it or now lol

    Get a bruce anchor and a 100 ft of chain and you won't drag as easily.Youll sleep alot more in a strong wind.You look in a lot better shape than me so you won't have a problem pulling it.

    • @OffgridOceanLife
      @OffgridOceanLife  4 месяца назад

      Yea I’ve got a Bruce with 30 ft of chain I was thinking of getting a rocna though

    • @Surfsail

      Im a commercial fisherman that fishes the outer Islands of the the Channel Islands San Nicholas Island specifically I've sat through a 70 not blow 🌬️ on a Bruce and 100 ft of chain. I know it's a lot of chain to pull but you sleep well at night and you look like you're in good shape I did it by hand many of times.The longer the chain the better.Also the longer the scope the harder it is to pop the hook.Maybe it's overkill for Florida but here on the West Coast it's pretty much mandatory. Also you can always get like a 50-ft chain and a cheap anchor and throw a Norwegian ball or even a lobster pot bouy on it and use that for a mooring in fair weather.If the weather comes up and starts blowing 20 kts or more throw that 100 ft of chain out baby and you'll sleep way better. I don't know if you do this but don't set your hook in the reef if possible always set your hook in the sand.

    Suggestion:
    ALWAYS take time to stow anchor properly for immediate use when ahit hits the fan and the fan is always running; also, always stow your winch handle and DO NOT leave it in the mast winch… it’ll be overboard soon enough if you do… I learned the hard way.
    Always set a tag line behind boat when swimming in case current sweeps you away…

    How does that 43 with chain drag after you set it? Or did you drop it in the water and panic when it was sliding idk I had 2 anchors 2 lbs per ft is usually fair for ground tackle how big is your boat again? 28?

  • @novocain13
    @novocain13 9 месяцев назад +1

    I think you are brave, but also a bit foolhardy to try to learn everything on your own. Spend some time with more experienced sailors to teach you. Take a course. It doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t learn by doing. It means that you can avoid to make some very expensive errors, and it may also spare your life. Glad you quit smoking. Keep on freediving. It will get better with training.
