As a native South Floridian for 18 years, the drive from Miami to Key West is really not bad at all. It always takes me around three hours but the drive is so worth it, and you can visit things along the way, especially in Key Largo. Get your key lime pie on the way, or stop at some of the parks

INCOMPETENT JUSTICE SYSTEM AND LAW ENFORCMENT IN THE KEYS !!!!! I was a victim of an attempted assault in lower keys Unfortunately I, the victim, was arrested due to investigatory negligence by the Monroe County Sherriff’s Office. There were cameras pointing in the direction of where the incident occurred. There were signs next to the front gate that stated the property is under cameras surveillance. The arresting deputy, however, wrote in the arrest report "I did not see cameras . He lied ! The deputy did not ask anybody if there were cameras there , he did not looked for them . While being transported to jail , I informed the deputy that there were cameras on the property. I asked the deputy to collect the video surveillance. That request was ignored. The next day, I requested that the fence that is integral to this incident be examined for fingerprints. This is important because the position of the fingerprints would have demonstrated that the aggressor climbed the fence to the top . The request was again ignored. The Sheriff deputies could not comprehend out how the aggressor climbed the fence. Climbing that particular fence for a fit men is actually easy. I would say a twelve year old boy could do it . Because the sheriff deputy wrongly believed it was impossible to climb the fence he stopped further investigating the case , he did not believe my version of events and did not collect any evidence of fence climbing . The deputies were easily manipulated by a perpetrator with a criminal record who arrived in the keys 4 weeks before the incident occurred. I am a 23 year resident in the keys with an absolutely clean record . Deputies exhibited no common sense whatsoever in this case. Not one sheriff deputy who arrived was older and experienced . The botched investigation resulted in the victim being arrested and the dangerous criminal let go !!!! . No evidence was collected by the Sherriff’s Office , making it now difficult for the court to establish the truth. I was forced to search and obtain evidence myself. Some evidence was luckily collected in the last moments before it was erased and disappeared forever. It should not be a luck but professional investigation which obtains evidence. I have already filed a complaint against the sheriff’s department . No response was given (Not collecting evidence really amounts to destroying evidence ) . State attorney Denis Ward was also notified, he is completely worthless. The Prosecutor assigned in this case is continuing this case on a ridiculous presumption that climbing fence was not possible. Me a 59 year old men created a video showing how easy it is to climb this kind of fence , I did it in 2 seconds !!! . THIS SITUATION IS PREVENTING ME , FROM PRESSING CHARGES AGAINST ATACKER AND HAVE him PROSECUTED . Everything stated here I can support with photos and videos .This incompetence is wasting taxpayer's money and judicial resources . I can only say sarcastically that people should not call the sheriff's department when bank robbery is occurring because they will arrest the bank clerk instead of the bank robber .......................... My reputation had been also damaged by media's employee of sheriff department who published only side of the story of attacker , my side of the story was ignored . When I protested of such unfair treatment I got response " We are sorry but we cannot retract article ".. My advice to the public anything you hear from sheriff department take with a pinch of salt , looks to me like they are more interested in sensationalism and making themselves look like heroes instead of fighting for truth and justice . Electing state attorney Denis Ward was a big mistake he surrounded himself with uneducated incompetent people . I delivered to state attorney Denis Ward video to help them educate themselves on how do you climb fence . CRICKETS !!!! How is arresting people who defend themselves is supposed to make us safer ? those incompetent officials are receiving large salaries while delivering incompetent results .We need to remove such incompetent people from office and this includes Denis Ward or at list send them to back to school .

Tip: there's a ferry that sails from the mainland to Key West. It might be a lot easier and (cheaper) to fly to the mainland, then just catch the ferry. Once you're in Key West, you can just bike or walk most places, no need to worry about renting a car or anything.

I live in the Keys, so I have some advice.
-Don’t take your eyes off the road! When you drive the overseas highway, don’t let the views entrance you, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy it. Our highway is literally the most deadly stretch of road per mile in the United States due to distracted driving.
-Don’t be reckless on the water! Lately following the pandemic, I’ve seen way too many people act like jack*sses on the water and endanger their lives and divers. I’ve seen way too many jet skis tear though ft deep water and nearly kill swimmers in the water. If you see a red flag with a white stripe, that’s a dive flag, give a wide berth around that boat in the water as there are swimmers/divers.
-Do take a walk in Key West at the crack of dawn. Just take basic situational awareness and you’ll get a much less crowded walking experience.
-Do always check the weather. Way too many people get caught in storms which were forecasted for hours ago. Check key west NWS when you plan your day, a lot of weather apps think we’re in the ocean and give inaccurate weather.
-Do get your gas in Key Largo or Marathon. Other islands absolutely tax on their prices, especially key west.

We used to have a abundance of exotic parrot's, many fruit trees, mangoes of all sizes, all kinds of Banana's, Tamarinds, Papayas,Giant coconuts, Wild honey all over the Islands. you could even find Watermelon on Stock Island. The Beaches used to be huge until they put Condominiums on them. The beaches had seashells by the handfuls. I remember the enormous mantarays that would swim in packs by the sand bar. Also there was Queen Conches everywhere, and the Florida lobsters crawled along the shorelines at sunset and sunrise. To me that was real Key West.

It does pay to get up with the sunrise in Key west. My wife and I were there in March. We are early risers. We were up at 5 everyday and realized that the island didn't wake up until 9. We would watch the sun come up. Then go get some coffee at Cuban coffee queen and walk around and hit the main tours stops. We were the only ones at the SMP, mile zero, and little White House. Remind people that the Key West island proper is only 2miles by 4 miles. You can walk around it in a few hours. It is also a CORAL REEF so all the sand on the beaches are shipped in, wearing water shoes or some kind of protection for the soles of your feet is necessary especially if you wade out into the reef area (I stepped on a sea urchin and got poisoned spines in my heel). I lived there during the Muriel Boat Lift era. Was not a good place to live but a great place to visit.

...except for the Keys. The Keys are phenomenal. The drive from Miami to Key West is one of the best drives I've ever taken. I really think the Keys, and especially Key Largo and Key West, ought to be on everybody's bucket list to do at least *once* in their lives. The food in the Keys is *better* than New Orleans, and the drive on the Overseas Highway is breathtaking. Just make sure to keep your speed down *and watch the road*.

Good job, sir. I think I would have emphasized the lack of sandy beaches more. There are a few motels that shipped in sand but for the most part the "beaches" are coral rocks and coral sludge. We retired here 4 years ago at MM10 Big Coppitt and were surprised by the lack of sandy beaches. In fact we boat out to local sand bars and party. Great fun.
The cost of living down here is so bad many locals are priced out and have to move to the mainland or live 4 or 5 to a house and share expenses. Getting service help is near impossible. We love our small community here at Seaside.

You're perfectly fine using the snorkel gear provided by any of the boat companies in Key West. I've worked in the industry for years, and I'm perfectly comfortable with the sanitization process (no, it's not bleach). Most companies mandate their crew use the same gear as the customers for this reason. That said, make sure you're going out with a reputable company, for so many reasons of course. Basically (just like a restaurant) if an operation seems shady, their sanitization practices probably are too.

No reason to fly into Key West. That's just silly imo. The drive from Miami to Key West is not that bad, and the flights and access to rental cars are waaay cheaper. The thing to do is to drive over the crazy long bridges (that is scenic in and of itself) and then park at your place you are staying and leave your car there for the duration of the trip. We always stayed at the big Hilton Reach hotel (has its own private sandy beach and pier and we would catch conch shells in low tide). When we were ready to explore and get food or bar hop, then we rented scooters. That's like THE thing to do. Surprised that wasn't mentioned. Soooo much easier to park a scooter and ride around the island on the scooters. It's been a few years but there were tons of scooter rentals when we used to go. Everything else is spot on. We are from Atlanta. So we would drive all the way down (like 9 hours I think) and stay at the hotel or air b&b and then rent a scooter whenever we needed one. The island towns themselves are fairly small and you can walk them if you want, easily done if you are in decent shape, not recommended if you are not because of the heat. Scooters both gas and electric are definitely the way to travel, especially between islands. Just have to be a bit careful if you are not familiar with driving a two wheel vehicle with regular traffic. I can see how it's a problem if you have kids, although when we went when I was younger I would ride on the scooter with my dad and my mom would have a scooter and my sister would ride behind her. I bet a covered trike business might do well there. Get some Tut-tuts there and make a killing.

Not anymore. For decades I used to save money renting cars to drive from KW to the Miami airport, but now that all 3 major US airlines have direct flights to many main cities along the Houston, Chicago, New York, east coast part of the nation from the island it is far simpler, faster and with rental car prices gone way up also generally cheaper to forget about Miami and Fort Lauderdale. That said the drive up and down the Keys can be really enjoyable when it's a new experience

    A couple more:
If you rent a scooter....DO NOT BEEP THE HORN! unless you absolutely have to.
It's tempting to beep the horns in celebration when you're scooting around with friends.....the locals HATE it.
Don't feed ANYTHING on land or in the water...manatees, pelicans, iguanas.etc......even tarpons (although some tourist destinations encourage it) They will survive just fine without your handouts.
Do not walk on living coral.
Leave the cats alone....they are mostly feral and want nothing to do with you.
Drive with extra caution and stay focused....there's only one way in/out and even minor accidents can have a ripple effect for miles and delay hundreds (if not thousands) of people...there are no detours.
Pay attention and actually listen to you boat captain, tour guide, concierge, etc....the information they are trying to relay to you is important.
The Keys environment is ultra--sensitive ....respect it and leave nothing but footprints.

Thank you Wolter. That video brought up some nice memories. In 2001 my wife and I stayed in Key West in the Youth hostel (we were travelling around Southern Florida). We used the coach service from Miami to go there.
We liked it a loi, and the food really is nice, and people are easy going. But what we never could understand was the thing with "The Southernmost part of the continental USA". Key West is an island, so what is the point with that? :-) I think tourism promotion.
When I metioned the food, yes, it really was good and tasty. Our exception: The lime pie: We couldn't eat it as it was much to sweet. I even warned others after that experience: Eat anything, but lime pie. :-)
The colours of the sunset were very beautiful, but we considered it a little bit awkward when people were clapping after the sun had set. It gives the eerie feeling as that must have been the last last performance of that play. :-)
So, yes, one day I like to visit Key West another time. And thanks again for that nice video!

You certainly got ripped off on your key lime pie. It's not supposed to be sweet, supposed to be tart. Maybe it was topped with sweet cream or meringue- don't like it that way either

Looking a little red there buddy:-) I need to add a couple things I used to live in the Keys. First of all it's absolutely not 2 hours from Miami it's more like 3 1/2 hours all the way to Key West. The cops are very powerful there so be very careful to follow the speed limit exactly even in the middle of the night. And my next piece of advice his to absolutely get off of Key West because Key West is only one of the keys. You can have a great experience in the lower Keys or even in the Upper Keys. Now due to the driving distance you won't be hopping from the upper keys to the Lower Keys a lot but certainly you could go around the Lower Keys in an afternoon and see Key West and Big Pine and some of the other places and find some very nice places. My third piece of advice is to maybe stay in one of the Lower Keys or Upper Keys rather than stay on Key West itself. The prices will be a lot less. Each key has its own personality. You should definitely go see Key West but don't only stay in Key West that's a big mistake everyone makes. I would like to say that you haven't seen the keys unless you have been to all of them and driven around.
Oh and one more thing if you have conch fritters they are very tough the locals don't eat it cooked. You need to have conch salad or ceviche. This is how locals eat conch.

Totally agree. If you're into bars and t-shirt shops, KW's for you. And yes, conch fritters that aren't like deep-fried rubber DO exist, but they're very hard to find. Monroe County Sheriff and KW PD MUST BE RESPECTED.

My wife and I were lucky enough to holiday there 2 years ago before covid.. Stayed in Lauderdale by the sea for a week, managed to see dolphins v Patriots at hard Rock Stadium, then picked up a mustang and drove to key largo, stayed overnight and then on to key west... Fantastic...! We loved every second the only downside was we eventually had to fly back to England... Highly recommended, the drive down and back to Miami was daunting but an experience we will never forget...

I was in Key West in April and it is laid back. I met a couple of peeps at Caroline's from my home base NYC who work for a Fintech Startup. They were working remotely and decided to relocate in Key West. I met up up with them by happenstance Friday at 3:00pm again at Caroline's. They were finishing up a call and having a local brew. Like I said laid back. 😎🍺

Want to add a big DO, especially if you haven't been. The sunset cruises are a fantastic way to see the sunset, be on the water, hear live music, and drinks are included with appetizers! Really best bang for your buck. It's not a lot of culture, but we always do one each night, we make so many friends and have a blast each night.

When I was 12 or so, living near Boston, I met this girl on Runescape, and we ended up becoming good friends outside the game and I learned she was from Key West. Almost 15 years later, we're still really close, and I have yet to make the trip. Hopefully I will get the chance to do that someday. We were just in Key West the end of April. I wish I had taken Uber or a taxi to go to Duval Street to eat. Parking is ridiculously expensive and parking is hard to find. Reef safe sun lotion is a must unless your at a resort and using their pool and you can use regular sun lotion there. Absolutely bring your own snorkel equipment I know they say they clean it but to they use bleach to clean it I don't know and I'm not taking chances. Swim shoes are a must most beaches are rocky they are not sandy. The food we had in Key West was amazing so many great choices for seafood. We drove down from Miami and the drive was spectacular one of the most beautiful drives we have ever done and there are plenty of places you can stop along the way to get a bite to eat and to stop for pictures or to put your toes in the water. We had such a great time while we were there that we are already talking about going back. It is a very layed back island and so much to see and do.

My big "don't" is: Don't fly to, or from, Key West - getting there is half the fun; the Overseas Highway is super-scenic! Key West is an interesting place, at the very southern end of the 48 Contiguous States, chock-full of interesting sites! Don't miss the lighthouse, which can be climbed.
