A great book to read about the wreckers of Key West is The Young Wrecker on the Florida Reef by Richard Meade Bache. It is a fictional story but is written by a famous explorer of the southeast US coastline whose family are like US royalty in the study of this area of the country. It was recommended by the wrecking museum and I would recommend it as well!
I live in Key West and applaud you for this list. The only suggestion I would make is that, if you are only here for a couple days and want to see as much as possible and learn about our great history, take the Conch Train. For a set price, you can get on and off the "train" (actually a tram), all over the city; or stay on the train to learn lots of details about all the sites you mentioned. Our guests always enjoy this as a morning event...then they go back to the places that interested them the most, later in the day. It's easy to get stuck on Duval Street and miss the tropical beauty and historical building of my home. Again, thank you for this well thought out and beautiful list of things to do in Key West.
As a frequent guest to Key West, while the Conch train or the tram is a bit corny in many ways it is a great way to see many features and history that the island has to offer. So much history in such a small area that has nothing to do with all the fabulous bars that Key West has to offer.
I always recommend Key West Lighthouse & Hemingway House to start with followed by lunch at Moondogs Cafe next door. If your considering Dry Tortuga NP make ferry reservations well in advance (hard to come by).
@@ThroughMyLens Nice I'm pumped. I did San Juan to El yunque National Park and did a ATV tour. If you ever find yourself in that area I bet alot of your viewers would enjoy that area as well.
I did drive from Miami to Key West in December 2020. I stayed three days in Key West and on return drive, I took pictures of the Seven Miles Bridge from Marathon Island side.
I have spent a great deal of time vacationing in the Florida Keys and Key West. I always recommend that people ride the Conch Tour Train on their first visit because it takes you all over the island and gives a great overview of the history and what is available. I think the Key West Aquarium should not be missed also. The Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center is fantastic for anyone wanting to learn about the ecosystem that is the Florida Keys and it’s FREE (something rare in Key West). The Key West Wildlife Center is also low key but fun. Thanks for the excellent video!
kermits is my favorite place for key lime anything! I love the key lime pie slice dipped in chocolate and frozen! Heading back down again for another road trip. The drive itself is absolutely gorgeous!
Love south Florida, and Key West, in particular! My mom and I took a sea plane to Fort Jefferson/Dry Tortugas years ago. So fun! An amazing experience! We did just about everything that you and your dad did. SO glad you both got to take this road trip together!
Thank you for all the Key West info. My wife and I have been thinking about making a trip down there, so it was really nice to see that was one of the voting options for this video. Thank you sir! Keep them coming.
If you are there in 'the season' (wintertime) visit one of the many theaters. They put on some very high-quality productions, we've not been disappointed yet. For example, the Waterfront Playhouse right next to Mallory Square.
Although not in Key West, one of the best places to visit in the keys and well worth the time is John Pennekamp state park on Key Largo. The glass bottom boat tour to Molasses reef originates from there.
I should’ve known that many sightseeing places about three years ago. Thank you for your hard work appreciated. Next vacation will be more memorable times.
I've been to The Rock numerous times for over 2 decades and have to say you did it right, EXCEPT for the part about scooters. We don't recommend them, as they are expensive, not easy to park for free, most people are not familiar with them, get in accidents (one rider hit my car last year) and they make a lot of noise, which isn't cool in Old Town. Rent a bicycle for about $14/ day and you can park for free just about anywhere. Be sure to use lights at night and try to stay off the busy streets during the rush hours. Nothing better in Key West than riding a bike down a quiet street.
What a fantastic overview on one of my bucket list trips. Looking forward to the broader Florida Keys video when it becomes available. Thank you for producing and delivering interesting and thoughtful content.
Took my honeymoon there. The island highest elevation is 6’, very easy to rent a bicycle and enjoy the amazing weather. Love all your videos. Glad you (and Pops) could make the cross-country journey.
Thanks for all the tips. I’m hoping when I do go, I’ll have at least 10 days to two weeks, if I’m not in a position to relocate to Key West. Of course I’m going to see all the important Jimmy Buffett landmarks, but I want to check out all of the places you mentioned as well. And I do love Keylime pie. Thanks for the info.
While in Key West, we did a night Haunted Walking Tour. It was so very informative and interesting. We learned about allot of local history and gave us suggestions on sites to visit later.
So I have been here one whole day so far. The lighthouse is very cool. Not so tiring to go up and I have had health issues in the past. Going down made my legs shake a lot tho bc I’m tall and clumsy. The Hemingway house was absolutely beautiful and worth the high entry cost. So many 5/6 toed cats 😸. RENT SCOOTERS….. save your feet..
I am so thankful for having come across your video. My husband and I will be there in a few weeks and we will be referring back to your video along our route. Side note: we just found out the tour to see Dry Tortugas is sold out 2 months in advance. So disappointing.
Great video, my wife and I are taking the drive from Miami in 3 weeks. Staying in Key West for the week so this video was a great help for her birthday week!
Through My Lens, some things I did while on my recent trip there were "SNUBA" diving, and the shark/dolphin tour, on which we saw nurse sharks, but I again missed seeing Flipper.😭
I've been driving from Pennsylvania to key west once a year every since 2014. I loved in ft Lauderdale for almost 2 years and was at key west may times when I lived in Florida. I'd love to retire there some day..
While the sunsets at Mallory Square can be epic, what makes it unique is the menagerie of magicians, jugglers, clowns, psychics, musicians, artists and truly unusual street performers who make it part carnival and part street circus. Also, you don't have to go all the way to the national park to enjoy excellent snorkeling. My experience with the drive over differs. Expected it to be a long stretch with ocean views and when I went it was 80 percent tourist sprawl and too few miles of actual ocean views. I am with your Dad on the lighthouse; not a fan of those stairs. Cheers.
Yea, it is a pretty crazy experience with all the street performers. I know what you mean about the drive, some spots are beautiful but many spots don't have the ocean views you would expect. Still a great one day road trip though
For those who haven't gone to Dry Tortugas, "a boat" to there sounds like you need to find someone with a family sized motorboat. In actuality, it's a huge ferryboat which can hold several hundred people, and has lots of amenities such as food and drinks of all kinds.
As a frequent visitor to KW, I think you did a nice job hitting some major highlights. I'd add the drag shows on Duval Street--always entertaining and fun, and KW is a city with One Human Family.
I was last in Key West about 40 years ago. Things have changed haha but I still went to Sloppy Joes and the Hemingway House etc. We watched the sunset from the pier but back there there was no square, just a small area at the end of the street that was about 30x40 feet. There were still jugglers and magicians, just a whole lot fewer people. My favorite part about being there was all the great Cuban food, most served in tiny restaurants off someone's home. Everyone needs to visit there at least once. Thanks for the video. It brings back good memories.
Nice job on the video>. Key West is one of my favorite places to visit. Everyone feels welcome. Eaton Street Fish Market great lunch location! Croissants de France wins for best key lime pie!!

Great short, informative, and to the point video. Things you left off were Smather's beach, The Key West Aquarium, The Key West shell warehouse, the cemeteries, and Mel Fisher's sunken treasure museum featuring treasure from the Atocha shipwreck, which was the most valuable shipwreck ever discovered. Even though you did mention Duval street, but you didn't mention Fantasy fest, which is the biggest attraction of the year in Key West. Also, while mentioning the Mallory dock sunset experience, you didn't mention all of the different wild and interesting acts that goes along with it, giving it a circus-carnival like atmosphere and experience.
@@travelwithpops agreed! We found out afterwards that you can camp there for two nights. Just have to bring your own food/water. In Deerfield Massachusetts there is a similar butterfly conservatory called Magic wings. Instead of flamingos they have little fowl walking around. They have poison dart frogs as well and tons of exotic flower cuttings you can buy.
Been to Key West soon to be 9 times. Three times from a cruise ship. The Keys are like my spiritual home. The sunset celebration is one of the very few tourist attractions in Key West that does not cost to attend. Most things are prohibitively expensive, Value for money wise. Even there they have a lot of really crappy entertainers that expect to get tipped every 5 minutes. They call themselves "searchers." A euphemism for someone who just can't be bothered having a job.
I saw on the news that some men got in trouble for setting a christmas tree on fire right next to the southern most point marker and it burned off the paint.
I went to the Dry Tortugas by boat. The beach is very nice, the tour interesting However, I was sea sick on the way over, and on the way back, it was rough because of a low in the area ( that is what the crew told us), many people became sea sick on the way back to key west.
