Key West Food Tour! Where the Locals Eat - Fresh Seafood and Strong Drinks!

- Eat and drink the way the Key West conchs do, AKA, the locals. I'm going to show you the restaurants with the true, old Key West vibe that are outside of the "touristy" area where you can get the true locals experience, and eat where the fisherman eat. It doesn't get any better!
We spent the weekend with Bobby and Michelle Mongelli, who are basically Key West "royalty." They own several restaurants throughout Stock Island and Key West, and they took us to all of them! I ate the FRESHEST seafood straight from the boats and even had the most delicious snapper that was stuffed with shrimp! It was grilled right in front of me - waterfront view and boats in the background. We had tons of lobster grilled to perfection, hogfish, lobster pizza, and shrimp that had just come off the shrimp boats! Plus the best oysters rockefeller charred perfectly in a wood-fire oven.
We also talk about the history behind each restaurant and also hang out with The Shrimp Pimp, who distributes the best shrimp to the restaurants of Key West. He filled me in on the process and how he got started in the business.
Finally, Bobby take us on a little boat ride from his marina as we tour the beautiful waters of Key West!

As a local, these places are the real deal. My dad works right next hogfish and it’s one of his favorite lunch spots. Fresh fish makes all the difference. If it’s not fresh, I’m not eating it. Roostica is also fantastic, the fig and pig is a must have whenever I visit home from college. If I where to give any advice to tourists visiting, get the fish. Grouper is my favorite, but mostly anything from the waters in the Florida keys will be delightful.
Agreed! Fresh fish is key and they do it right here. If I worked next to Hogfish as well I'd be there every day lol

When starting to review this video I expected to see the same old same old. Wow was I surprised as the three highlighted have been long time favorites of ours, to the point of yesterday we were at Hogfish for lunch, and Roostica for a late dinner and drinks. To date, they have never disappointed us.

I found the Hogfish Bar & Grill in 2005 when camping at Boyd's. Visited Geiger Key last visit in 2018. Both top-notch for food, service, and overall Keys experience. Been up & down the Keys and the Hogfish will ALWAYS be my favorite anywhere in the Keys. Ran into Bobby last visit and introduced myself and got to shake his hand. He's world-famous now you know.
It's a great spot and a great family too! What I love about their restaurants is that they stay true to the "Old Key West," amazing food, and and a true locals spot. :)

I visited the Keys for the first time recently. I ate at Geiger in June (2021). The food and atmosphere are awesome. I have a pic of the crocodile warning sign in my phone. Also ate at the Hogfish. Now I wish I would have tried the sandwich. I'll be back in December and make a point of going there.

Sushi Song is by far the best place to eat in Key West.
I was in Key West last November right before Thanksgiving. What an amazing place, it didn't feel like you were still in the states.

September but before that in July.. we’ll be heading to a Bavarian mountain town in GA. It’ll be the perfect escape from the FL heat 😀

Hogfish is fantastic! Prior to GPS, it was also quite difficult to find. Must-go when you’re in the Keys.

Hogfish is on Stock Island actually. A little off the beaten path. Worth finding. Definitely a locals place. Try the fish tacos.

Like another commenter I was expecting the same old same old recommendations but as soon as I saw the owners pop up on the screen, I knew you were going to feature really good food! My parents have been going to the keys for almost 20 years now, multiple times a year. They have a friend group of locals down there who introduced them to a Geiger Key a long time ago, and it is our favorite. It’s always our first stop when I meet my parents down there. My husband and I went there 3x the week of our wedding and brought our bridal party and family there. My parents brought their out of town friends. Everyone was raving about the food, the ambiance. The shrimp tacos and onion rings cannot be beat! I’m telling you, I don’t even like onion rings typically, but they are one of the things I most look forward to every time we come to the keys. The grouper cheeks, the Hogfish, so good. The frozen drinks taste fresh and not that nasty slurpee taste many have. We’ve eaten at very expensive restaurants and little food trucks from key west up to islamorada and nothing has outshined Geiger for me.... Square Grouper is right up there with taste and quality, but Geiger still won that battle out. Hogfish is the same enjoyment in terms of food, but I prefer the ambiance of Geiger. Also awesome is hearing those fighter jets flying by while sitting outside since you’re so close to the base. But yeah, thanks for the video!!

I went to Roostica after seeing your video. Sadly they just did the lobster tails, and oysters for you. They waitress was damn rude and said they only do those when they want to. It’s not a set thing on the menu. So all they pretty much had was the pizza

I’ve to KW a lot!! Unfortunately the place has gone from a quirky little town to an overcrowded, way too expensive and overrated trap.
Seafood should be dated when it was caught. This seafood is fresh but when you buy it in a big city, who know when it was caught. I try to smell it first.

I grew up in Key West The food that you think is good now does not have anything on what I grew on. Most of the real cooks are resting in heaven. Ask any of the locals about Mrs Vangie Crab and Rice or Shorty's conch fritters and fried chicken shack. then there was Florence greasy spoon Rib Shack and last but not least My Grandmother Mrs Etta Sands was one of the best cooks in Key West.
never heard of this guy in the entire 25 years i spent while growing up in key west, locals dont go to restaurants. this guys not a local, and almost everything you said in this video is incorrect.
