Ice Maker Not Working on Samsung Refrigerator - Check these 8 Things to Get it Working Again

- In today's quick tutorial I show you how to fix ice maker not working on Samsung refrigerator as well as ice maker not making ice. Now depending on the brand or manufacture of refrigerator you have, some of the things I mention will be located in different locations. Be sure to reference your owners manual for these items.
Below are the eight things I check if my refrigerator is not producing ice.
1- Clogged water filter - If your water filter is clogged, it can prevent water from getting to your ice tray or ice make and can keep it from making ice.
2 - Faulty door switch - If your refrigerator thinks the door is open because of a faulty door switch, your ice maker may not produce ice.
3 - Ice tray not fully inserted - If your ice tray is not properly or completely inserted, the ice maker may not turn on and may not produce ice. Sometimes ice falls behind my tray and prevents it from fully inserting.
4 - Kink or damaged water line - Check the back of your refrigerator and check the water line. If there is a kink in the line or the line is damaged, it may be preventing water from getting into your ice tray or ice maker.
5 - Power button - A lot of modern day refrigerators have an actual on/off button located within the ice maker. Make sure your ice maker is turned on.
6 - Freezer temp - The ideal temperature for your freezer is 0 degrees F. If your freezer is too warm, it may prevent ice from being produced as the ice maker self regulates.
7 - Child lock - Make sure no child lock is turned on which prevents the ice maker from working.
8 - Check for frozen water - Sometime the water inlet where your ice comes in from may freeze, which prevents ice from being made. Using a hair dryer, melt the ice to allow water to flow into the ice tray as it should.

If you have a Samsung and your icemaker doesn't work, Welcome to the club....
I've heard this happens a lot
Its funny because all guides says that move the fridge and check the water line, but NONE of them says "Hey, try to serve water in a glas, if water is coming from there, your water line is ok, you don't need to move the whole freaking fridge"
Well you could still have a leak in your water line. Best to check it once and while.
Also there are usually 2 intake valves, so just because you have water to your dispenser does not mean that your valve to the icemaker is working
Thank you for this! My problem was that a part of the water line was frozen. I increased the freezer temp from -2 degrees Fahrenheit to 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Then I used your blow-dryer de-icing method. Worked like a charm!
My father in law moved the fridge couple inches to pant behind the fridge and then my Fridge started throwing and “EP” error code. Everything still works fine , fridge water dispenser except for the ice. There’s a knocking noise then nothing. No ice in the tray either. Since I have warranty the technician didn’t even bother servicing it just wanted to swap out the whole fridge but i don’t want to do that. I tried unplugging it for a minute to reset and it shows the temperature on the inside of the fridge for a bit then goes back to the error code. I don’t know what it could be
😂😂 people love to make things difficult
Lol! Thanks for saving me a ton of work. I was prepared to take everything apart to figure out why no ice was being made. You saved me a bunch of time in just turning my ice maker back on.
Happy to hear it Elizabeth! Have a great weekend!

My parents have the same fridge and the place they bought it from charged them 200 to fix the ice maker then broke shortly after... then they charged them another 500 to fix it again then broke again shortly after.
Is there any way to get back that money or sue them as I think it's outrageous to charge 700 dollars to not fix the ice make?
Excellent! Just the right amount of intro... then those 8 great things to check. Bravo!
Glad it helped 😀
Thanks for an informative vid. My Samsung had stopped making ice so I found your video on the 8 tips... I never knew about the little switch on the side of the ice maker. Found my switch and felt it "click" and heard a shame from the fridge. Put the ice tray back in and went to bed. This morning... A Tray Full of Ice!! Thanks again!
Yay! Glad to hear it!
Thanks so much. I was 20 seconds into your video and realized my ice was turned off. It must have happened when I was cleaning the panel. I don’t know if I even realize that button was there. You are the bomb. Thank you so much.
Yay! Glad it was an easy fix for you!
Thank you!!! You saved me lots of money!! Resetting the fridge temperature did the trick!!
Awesome!!
You rock! I had resigned myself to not having ice this summer - just heard the first cubes dropping! I had no idea there was a separate ice maker power button - the indicator inside the fridge said the ice maker was on but when I held the little blue button on the ice maker itself for 3 seconds I felt a humming begin. I also turned the freezer temp down just to be sure. Thanks so much for the great video!
Awesome! Yeah I didn't know ice makers had their own separate power button either. Glad it's back up and running for you!
Thanks for the 3-second info. I heard a sound after the 3 seconds and then felt a motion. It didn't last long, but hoping it was it.
Great trouble shoot, thank you!
I had a cluster of ice that managed to not fall over into the bucket, keeping it from making more ice.
Glad you got it back up running! Enjoy your ice!
Excellent, concise video! Thank you.
You're welcome!
This was a nice, educational, and to the point video. Thanks for NOT gunking it up with back ground music.
You bet Danny! Yeah, I cannot stand back ground music like so many other tutorials. Lol
Your video was spot on. I just went step by step and it solved the problem. My refrigerator model is very similar to the one in the video. It had ice all over the mechanism and I used a hair dryer (great idea) to de-ice it. Then the on button needed to be pressed for 3 secs and now I can hear the sweet sound of falling ice. Thanks very much
Excellent! Happy to hear it helped!
Hair dryer is a dumb idea, you guys are spreading false information and destroying appliances because the heat warps the plastic, therefore destroying the cavity and making unit unrepairable. I work in appliances and have had to educate customers to use steamer, not a hair dryer or a heat gun of any kind since the steamer doesn't heat the plastic enough to melt it unlike heat guns... Videos like these are why appliance companies void warranty.
Thank you VERY much!!! The door switch was 100% the issue. This is the only video that covers this possible issue. Thanks again!
Yay! Glad I could help ☺️
Is that really the switch for light? I close both doors and light right away goes out, i close right side door and hold switch pushed in and lights stay on inside fridge..

Happy I could help! Have a great day!
Thanks for the info.
Turns out my problem was dirty filter and ice buildup behind the ice bucket.
While clearing the ice out, I noticed a switch behind the bucket housing that has to engage fully to work, I guess that’s to keep it from pouring water into it when it isn’t freezing properly.
👍👍
Great video very helpful. Never knew my ice maker had a reset button.
Glad I could help!
Amazing... thank you. Worked a treat

The power switch on the side of the ice maker did the trick for me.
I never would've thought of that. Thanks! Update * it only worked 1 time. Still not getting ice
Darn! Sorry to hear it didn't remedy the issue
Easy check for presence of water is to switch from ice to water and try filling out a cup. If it runs, no need to check for the filter, etc.
Good tip 👌🏻
Thank u so much
Most welcome 😊
Hello there new subscriber. Thanks 🙏 for sharing this tips.
You bet! Thanks for subbing!
Great video for explanations. My problem with this and models like it. The ice maker is in the fridge, these style of units, ice makers leak warm air inside and it freezes up. Mine worked a month, under warranty they fixed it, I got 2 months on the 2nd one. Finally found a serviceman who knew what he was talking about and he could fix them and give a one year warranty on the service but he told me dollars to donuts 1.5 year and the seal will fail again. They are junk, all. Get a model with the ice maker in the freezer.
Sorry to hear about the struggles! Thanks for sharing the tip on the ice maker in the freezer. I will keep that in mind next time I am in the market for a fridge! :-)
The power switch on the side of the ice maker did the trick for me too. I actually did notice it when I was looking for the problem but dismissed it as it said "test switch" - very misleading
Anyway now working cheers!
Awesome! Happy to hear it!
Thank You

You legit look like a buff mark rober!! Not saying it in a mean way I legit thought you were mark until I seen ya work out. Keep killing it bro
Hey thanks dude! I actually haven't been lifting much in a while. Getting scrawny. Haha. Need to get back to it after the holidays!
Thank you so much! I have a Samsung, which by the way, I will NEVER purchase another Samsung refridgerator again. When the ice maker stopped, one of its many quirks, I turned to You Tube and found your video. For me, it was the inside power button. Mine is white and blends in with the rest of the freezer so it took a bit of time and a flashlight to find it. Once I pressed it, it starting making ice. Thank you for making this video!
Awesome! Glad to hear it!
Same here - never another Samsiung- never!
Great video
Glad I could help!
Most important thing you forgot to tell is how defrost the ice maker. Everything else you covered perfectly.
Bummer! I will have to make an updated video at some point :-)
Thanks so much! This was so helpful and easy to follow! Fingers crossed that the beep I heard when I press and held the ice power button was a good sign. Scrapped out all the ice in the back and changed the filter just to be safe!:) thanks again man!
give us an update!
Fingers crossed too! Let me know how it went! Do you have ice!?
Yes, I am waiting on an update too!
Did that work?

Your excellent video helped me make short work of my ice maker problem... (little power button on the right side of i.m apparently was turned off)..
Liked and subbed, thanks much! Jack
Glad it helped! And welcome to the channel!
How do I know if the switch is on or off? When I press the switch I hear a chime twice. I don't know if it's on or not lol
Thanks for this video..my problem is the ice maker in the freezer. Upper one works fine .....lower one in the freezer used to work
but now nothing. I'll try changing the filter. fingers crossed.
Changing the filter is what I would try first too. Let me know how it goes!
Thank you, just saved me a couple hundred bucks, it was a quarter shaped piece of ice that wasn’t letting the tray seat all the way back….
Yay! Glad to hear it! 🙏 🙂
Bummer! All of these steps for me are working. My ice maker only fills up one side of the tray and rarely dumps that little bit of ice it does make. UGH Thanks for the helpful checks! It did help me figure out what it isn't doing.
What brand of refrigerator do you have?
@@JMGENTERPRISES Samsung RS27T5200SR. So far I’ve come to a conclusion that it’s the water pressure. It doesn’t appear to be supply the 20psi that it calls for. At least that’s what I’ve read and troubleshooted on the Samsung website.
Very helpful. Thanks

Great video do you know an awful lot about freezers and icemakers job well done
Glad I could help and yes I do! Haha
I haven't some Samsung ice maker just like the one you showed on this video and I have read and checked out all of the tips you suggested but still my ice maker does not make ice it fills up with water but it doesn't get cold enough in that part of the freezer I don't think to freeze the ice and make ice what is my problem is it something to do with the motor
I was defrosting my ice maker as a preventive measure because it has sometimes frozen up to where I couldn't get the ice drawer out without a lot of trouble. I forgot to turn the ice maker off before I turn the defroster on. I also put hot wet dishcloths at the very back corner to get the ice off of the back. Other than that I didn't do anything and now my ice maker doesn't work. I tried everything from your video. Would you have any idea what I could or should try next? Thank you!
We did end up fixing it. We had to push longer on the button on the side of the ice maker. Your video helped enormously! Thanks for making such a helpful video!
Glad my video helped and you were able to get it fixed 🙌
Great video - Thanks - What model Samsung fridge do you have?
I'm not quite sure. I'll see if I can find out!
Great video! My switch on the ice maker itself was off. This may be because it iced up and shut off on its own. Well Maybe!!!
Thanks for your help. American flag emoji not available. Bummer.
Glad it was an easy fix! Whaaat!?...no american flag emoji 😔
Thank you for your instructions, now I am just waiting for the ice to form and fill my tray🤗
Glad I could help!
Glad I watched, but none of these fixed my issue
Darn! I would reach out to technical support.
Reach out and tell them you need to have a tech replace with a new icemaker per the class action lawsuit they lost.
Thank you, very helpful. Why that unlabeled little blue button is on the side of the icemaker... who knows. Never would have gotten there by myself.
Glad I could help. Yeah, I do not know why they hide the little button.
Tried first tip. Help tiger there to turn on ice maker. All it did was lock it. I finally noticed ENERGY SAVER was lite. Held for 3 seconds. Wella! ICE OFF turned off
Door switch! Damn thank you!
You bet! Glad it'll be an easy fix for ya!
tyvm...did not know about internal power button .
Glad I could help!
Thanks! In my case it was the button inside the ice maker 😅
Glad it was an easy fix!
Very helpful. Do you know what would cause your water to be worm?
Honestly, I do not. That is a good question.
Awesome video, if I’ve tried all above and still no ice I guess will need to call a Samsung technician to come out now huh? 😩
Darn! Yeah sounds like something internal. Let me know how it goes!
Hi. Appreciate the videos VERY much. We have a Samsung that looks very much like the model you're referring to. The ice maker works fine; however, every six hours or so, it makes this weird, repetitive "whooshing" sound like it's having trouble breathing. It lasts about 10 minutes and then stops until the next time. Any ideas? Thanks very much!
So you have changed the filter? Sometimes when my ice gets low I get that whooshing sound you are referring to. However mine usually only last about two minutes. Have you tried unplugging your fridge for a couple minutes then plugging back in? I find a hard reset like that occasionally sometimes helps. Not just fridges but my computer, roomba robots, cell phone and other things 😄
I swear every Samsung should be sold with a hair dryer!!! I didn't want a Samsung - but during the height of the Panda Express, my fridge died and Samsung was the only fridge available in my area, in store. My filter is set-up like yours, but I have to turn off the water and drain the line from the back before I can replace my filter. I haven't seen anyone else talk about this issue.
I hear ya on Samsung fridges. I think you are doing it correctly by turning off the water before replacing the filter. It makes it a lot easier to remove when it's not under pressure.
great video. I suspect mine is the door switch. How do i change that?
You usually have to release the nut on the inside. At least that's how it's done on my fridge
The water pipe is empty and doesn't open the valve for some reason. There is water supply. Water runs when requested to a cup, but the ice maker stays dry. Why?
Not sure sorry
Thanks so much for this video. My door switch is not working so I’m hoping that’s the issue. By any chance do you know how to fix it /where to get one ?
I've never personally replaced one. But I know you can get them on Amazon for cheap. Maybe another youtube tutorial will show you how to replace.
@nicole how do you know your switch is bad? Trying to see if I can diagnose mine.. My Icemaker is not freezing the water to turn it into ice 😒
Almost a spitting image of my model.
Hopefully the power button and/or door switch was it.
Best of luck! Let me know how it goes!
TO EVERYONE WATCHING! DO Not use a hair dryer or heat gun of any sort because the heat will warp/melt the plastic and make your ice room warped and unrepairable, thus voiding any warranty or one time repairs. Use a steamer instead, enough heat to melt the ice, but not enough to melt the plastic.
Personally my hair dryer does not get hot enough to melt plastic but good tip
If u know how to use a heat gun properly, its fine. But most dont, so listen to the comment lol
@@DatDudeDez Yeah must be careful with a heat gun fo sho!
I'm not getting any water either. Going to check out the filter.
Best of luck! Let me know how it goes!
wow thanks so much! i realized that my freezer was set to 6 degrees........yikes!
That's a little low!
Thanks for this. But first question should have been "is the water dispenser working?" If it is then the "kinked water line" and "filter" are not applicable.
Good point!
Hey - we’ve got the exact same fridge. Followed all the awesome tips you gave, have replaced the water valve and also replaced ice maker - first with after market - then with OEM. Still no ice! We can’t find any Samsung breakdowns/service info online. Any ideas?
Have you tried just unplugging your fridge and plugging it back in?
Yes we did. And we reset the new OEM ice machine. Water is filling and freezer is at temp. The issue seems to be that ice is forming on the extraction fingers and not releasing. Super frustrating!
Not sure why mines won’t work. I opened it according to your instructions. I’ll see what happens.
Have you tried all the steps in my video?
Wouldn't the most obvious troubleshooting step be that if the water button works. The water line is ok and it can't be the water filter either. That eliminates two of your steps. Narrowing it down specifically to the ice maker or controls.
Good point! 👍🏼
We have a Samsung french door fridge. It has both upper and lower ice maker. Will the bottom freezer still work if you remove the ice maker?
That is a good question. I honestly do not know. Do you have an owners manual?
So do you happen to know if there are situations where it will be dispensing water filling the pitcher in the door and all of that stuff and not be making ice because it’s a water supply issue?
Yes that could be it
I found out the hard way, not to push that button inside the ice maker more than once. You will flood your kitchen. I woke up to water all over my floor this morning.
Oh no!!! Sorry to hear that 😕
Hair dryer worked for me to melt the ice built up in the water line!
Took 10 min!
Yay! Glad to hear it!
Quick question, my water dispenser works great, I thought this would be an indication that the hose and water pressure, including filter - should all be good. Am I wrong to assume this? Thank you in advance
Good question. Yeah I would assume that as well
Do u have a video for how to replace the switch on the door? Thanks
I currently do not. Good idea for a video though. Maybe that video is somewhere on youtube already?
I have the same ice maker unit. Water is dispensing just fine. The ice maker is not filling. Is there a way to check if the freezer fill line is blocked with sediment? Since water dispenses with great pressure, I can rule out the filter. And since water dispenses at all, I can rule out the door switch. Right?
Yeah, I would say you can rule out the door switch and filter. Have you tried using a hair dryer to ensure no ice is blocking the dispenser?
The reset worked and dumped water into the unit, so no ice blocking :) The compartment for the ice maker is too warm. The bottom freezer is also not as cold as it should be. 10-12 degrees instead of -8 it's set for.
Did you ever figure that out because I’m having the same problem.
Sorry to say it had nothing to do with the ice maker. We had a slow leak in our compressor. The temperature slowly continued to rise. Now we have a new refrigerator (Whirlpool side by side) for about the same cost as a repair. After removing the lower back panel, I could see areas of corrosion on a couple lines. A repairman diagnosed.
@@stephaniebean634 OK thank you for getting back to me I appreciate it
I have an rfg297aars it has a door switch and magnetic switches. The o button doesn’t work but the magnetic ones do. Do I need to replace the button?
I would assume so but I cannot say for certain. Have you checked your owners manual?
My ice doesn’t empty in the bin. I have to do it manually. Not sure why. The arm to detect if the bin is filled seems fine and I can toggle it up and down. There’s no power button inside the freezer though. If there is, I just can’t find it. Maybe that’s the problem. Idk. But once I manually dump the ice. Water pours into the tray and I come back a couple hours later to check. They’re frozen and not dumped. So I press the button.
i fixed my fridge non-dispensing water/ice issue by :
1) remove the water container(supplied with the fridge) first, mine is non-plumbing fridge
2) insert the 50ml syringe(filled with water) into the water container hole
3) press on the button sensor (beside the container location) to simulate(or bluff the fridge) that u had put back the container
4) when u hear the fridge pump machine sound
5) compress your syringe to fill the water pipe(in the fridge) with water. some water will leak so prepare a cloth to wipe
6) Voila. done.
Awesome! Happy to hear you were able to get it working again. Thanks for the explanation on how you did it!
How long after doing these steps until I could expect ice?
@@MegaLizard5 so long the water could flow into your ice-tray, ice should be on the way, depend on your fridge coldness setting
You have the ice maker that looks like mine! My Samsung fridge ice maker does not stop making ice. It makes ice great but doesn't seem to have an off switch. Where is the switch that triggers the ice to quite making ice when the bucket is full? Any help would be appreciated.
Hmmmm. Sounds like there must be a sensor of some kind. I haven't experienced that problem. Maybe another RUclips video would have the solution? I also heard Samsung has great customer service on their refrigerators. Maybe try giving them a call?
The video tells you where the off switch is.
Mine does the same thing...makes so much ice it jams up. did you ever figure out why yet?
Same here and the ice cubes freeze up top and cause an ice dam. Which blocks any other ice from coming down.
No more Samsung refrigerator/freezers for us!
Far tooo aggravating!!!
Muy same thoughts. I noticed when it mad ice cubes won't stop making cubes. I started pressing the stop making ice in the front panel of the fridge as soon as I had enough ice. Hope to find out something
