GOOD NEWS ALERT 😎: THIS VIDEO is the most accurate I have seen. Thank you BEN. For all folks suffering from this problem I have GREAT NEWS. Due to the Class Action suit SAMSUNG is now performing this exact repair for FREE. It only took me 25 minutes using online chat with SAMSUNG to get a service ticket opened. Only 3 days later the entire job you described - parts and labor - was DONE by a trained Samsung technician. (New ice maker, upgraded heating coil, new Control Board - no silicone because Samsung has determined that this is not the cause of the problem.) My technician was trained on all Samsung products. Marvelous.

Hi Ben's Appliances, I am Ryan and I am a second generation Refrigeration Repair Man. My Dad went to Trade School in the 60's and learned Refrigeration Repair and I was given his school books and learned about it when I was a teenager. I have a class A and D Mechanical License and I did work on the Parallel Racks in the Large Grocery Stores for many years before I got my Contractors Licenses and started to work for myself. Now being in the industry for decades, I feel that R-12, R-502, R-500, and R-22 where the best refrigerants and now that flammable gas's are being used on small equipment is a disaster waiting to happen and the small equipment industry is going toward equipment that will not last long and is too expensive to repair so new equipment sale's become a better option for the public. A lot of my commercial customers have asked me to repair the refrigerators in their homes and the Samsung is a common refrigerator I come across and on-line I do not find anything really good said about that brand. I worked on one yesterday and it was frozen up in the refrigerator evaporator air channels and the ice maker but the freezer was working well. I found the fan was frozen up and not working and I expect to be working on that refrigerator again because it had dirty wire connectors for the fan and I tried to clean it up but I just don't expect it to work much longer. I do appreciate the video you post to help others with repair information and I thank you. I prefer to work on larger Refrigeration equipment but having customers and keeping them happy includes having to also get the refrigerators in their house working as well and the new house refrigerators are not what I like to work on, they are just not made well and they are not made to last long.

Ben, love your videos. About the ice maker service kit: it comes with ice maker and control board for about $190. The kit is not available for RF28HMEDBSR/AA Model but ice make service kit fits ok and improves service. But the control board pin out plugs don't work. 13 pins for 11 pin plug. 11 pins for 9 pin plug. You have to throw away control board (vale about $90) unless you can get upgraded ice maker without control board service kit. Just FYI! THANKS AGAIN.

Love your vids. Question, do I really need to change the ice maker control board and upgrade the defrost tube? The ice maker was fine for the first 4 years. Then we got the ice build up. After a few attempts of removing build up, it returned. I gave up for a couple of years since getting a countertop unit. I left the ice tray out and entire box eventually filled with a solid block of ice. I also had the main evap freezing over which led me to your ice maker vid. The evap area has been upgraded with your suggestions. Now the ice maker is removed thanks to the steamer idea. A while back I bought a new factory ice maker, harness cover, sealant and upgraded clip. I did this before knowing there was a factory kit including the control board. Suggestions please.

I purchased the parts to do this a long time ago, but I didn't get around to actually doing it until this week. The process went pretty smooth, although getting the auger assembly back in was challenging (the drain tube wasn't lining up with the hole in the back of the ice room). That took some creativity to figure out how to manipulate it. But I now have a full ice bucket !! We'll see if this is a permanent fix for the icing problem. Samsung had replaced my ice maker and caulked around the ice room back when it was still in warranty, but about a year later, the icing around the outside of the ice maker started again. I'm hoping the changed "timings" from the new control board is a big part of the fix.

Where can I get parts to replace the entire plastic box and/or the other components?

Great video. I have a relatively new augur motor and a new Ice Master ice tray. The ice maker works just fine but I'm having problems with the ice dispensing process. The augur turns dispensing ice then it will stop and then the auger sounds like it's stuck or jammed and no ice is dispensed. When this happens the ice tray looks like it gets pushed out about 1/4 or 1/2 an inch. I can take out the ice tray and then put it back and ice will dispense for a few seconds and then problem happens again. Any suggestion?

Hi Ben! I need to replace the whole ice maker unit because I use a hot air gun to melt the ice to be able to pull out the ice bucket and some parts on the rear back unit ( where you find the motor for the auger to dispense the ice cubes ) so the new ice maker does not fit. I am thinking to replace the whole rear part instead of getting a new refrigerator. Could you help me to do this in orfer to save some ( maybe big ) bucks ? Please, I will be waiting your reply. Thanks a lot, Ramon Perera, Miami, Fl.

I just want to say that I too reached out to Samsung for my ice maker and they opened a ticket and sent a service truck to my home and repaired everything that he did in the video for free. Its still for free guys. Call Samsung and tell them your ice maker woes and they will make it right. I was astonished to be honest. At least they’re trying. Ill give them that. And I would have never thought to call or check until I saw this video and read some of the comments that said they called and got it fixed for free. So give them a call. Great video!

That's like the one nice thing about these: you get past the really crappy parts, and they are rock solid. The things that usually are horifically expensive: The control boards or compressors, tend to be really solid on these things. If LG would put all their components into a fridge with a Samsung compressor and electronics, you'd have the "Perfect" modern fridge.

Nice helpful video! The only think I might suggest is that if you're pinched for money you can save 100 to 150 by only purchasing the ice machine and condensate draim by itself. Then if after you install everything you think you need a board, you can always buy it separately, You will still pay about the same when it's all said and done. Also there are several reasons using silicone to plug up the air leaks is not recommended, if you ever have to remove it - it's very difficule plust its a mess and you have to wait 24 hours for it to cure. Using a toxic free duct putty will work much better. Thanks again!

Ben, excellent well planned and produced video. You certainly have a knack for instruction. So my ice-maker does work. My problem is that after defrosting, disassembling, and putting back together, it will function for about 5 days before it freezes up. Based on your video, this tells me that moisture is getting into the system. My feeling is that since the machine works, perhaps I just need to put in the parts and sealant that would help keep moisture out. I'm just trying to avoid buying the whole kit if it doesn't need it. Or, would you suggest simply calling it a day, buy the kit, and do a full replacement? I agree with the comments below......meaning......I would never buy this fridge again. The icemaker in this unit is a poor design and extremely frustrating.
