Incredible lesson. Learning how to play with relative major/minor scales and knowing where they are with in the chord shapes on guitar is literally a pandora's box. Once you open that up, there's no going back. This was such a great example of that.

Great lesson as always from you guys! It is really helpful showing different options and vocabulary for playing around IV, V, vi chords when teaching CAGED. For me that is where I struggle the most. Playing around I chords is the easy part, but when I try to play around rest of the chords of the progression I am stuck most of the time. Hope to see more lessons on this in the future, cheers!

Beautiful playing from the cream of the crop! Awareness of the chord fragments in any position on the finger board arises from knowledge of the major and minor diatonic scales and how to harmonize them on adjacent strings with lots of practice. Although these guys are talking about "chord shapes", I suspect what they hear are the intervals from the tonic. And as Tim said, knowing where the target tones are to land, as understanding the transitions in playing through the chord progressions is critical. The technique is honed, but the ears are golden. Gotta be able to play what you hear and hear something worth playing.
I never really post comments on videos. But this video blew my mind. Subscribed papa. Tim and Guthrie have such melodic phrasing.

I need to rewatch this a few dozen times so I can break down some of these licks. Such incredible playing and thanks to B Papa for asking the right questions. I was following pretty well until Tim got into his slight outside playing with modes. I would have loved to hear more of an explanation but I think it's a little hard to get these guys to slow down for us mortals.

Hold on...I think Guthrie just fed me an epiphany. At 10:29...I've always wondered how players like this start anywhere on the fretboard. I've always seen it as linking shapes. Sure, they link, but to jump in and start playing, let the chord shape tell you where to start! Mind. Blown.

You really want a trip? Look into modal playing.
You got it. Don’t have to “go through” and scale to get to another one. As long as you know where all your chord tones are, you can start from anywhere. Now that you get that you’ll be amazed at how much your playing will open up 👍

It’s all phrasing. That’s why, imo, it’s so important to study the phrasing of soloist you admire. It’s like learning how to be a great writer or speaker, a lot of us know the language but don’t know how to be eloquent with it. More and more my focus is on lyricism in my playing and to be able to sing my melodies, thanks guys

Brett, I am going to take your advice on Carter’s and Rumble Seat. I am going to Nashville for my birthday. So with this approach and playing over changes, how relevant or important is highlighting shared notes between the next chord in the progression?
In other words should you just hang out in that one chord shape then do a transfer lick into the next not worried about the other melodic notes in the other chords in the progression?

Sometimes one word is all that's needed..same on guitar..it's not how many notes you use..it's what you do with them..For a masterclass in that i point you to the late and great B.B. King.
He never played a note that was not needed..You'd wait for him to swing that guitar back round into his hands..and if he play one note with that creamy vibrato you were in heaven ... One note..If he played 2 or 3...you were in heaven with chocolate...

Guthrie is a monster for sure. But a very melodic monster.
Mayer does the same thing a lot actually. For what’s its worth, it’s a pretty simple lick. It’s just a 1/2 step bend, to a whole step, then back to the 1/2 step before letting the bend go. The trick is nailing the intonation on each bend 🤘🏼
John O'Mary He’s doing more than just that. He’s actually scooping into each of the tones, rather than just hitting them straight.
When Don Henley says, “Just give me something-something I can use”, I’m certain he was referring to Brett Papa videos.

@ 4:45 tim says "break the G in half".
Ive never heard that before, but I know exactly what he means
More specifically, breaking into 2 beats of G and 2 beats of Eminor, as well as breaking the G chord "in half" so to speak, since Em is the relative minor to G major (exact same notes)

It's the same scale pattern 4 half steps down, it's not rocket science.
"Relative minor" sounds a lot trickier than it really is...
Relative minor is the 6th note of the major scale. In other words, take your I chord (the tonic) and drop a step and a half (three frets) down. There’s your relative minor. Simple 👍

For one thing, the chord progression starts in D and the end of the song/jam ends on the D.
None of these guys are formally trained in music. Very common for great guitar players to be unschooled in music. I wonder if this is the case for other instruments? Something about the guitar that is decipherable without music knowledge?
