Jesse, I had the OV Tune done on my OR in May. My guy works out of Atlanta. He does not just do the standard tune from OV Tune but also does tweaks on it. Manual calculations or it didn't mean anything. Tunes can screw with ecu mpg numbers. Also need to factor in the uptick in cost of 91 gas and subtract it from your savings.
i've been running 5.29's and 91 octane ovtune 2.0F for about 20k miles. my truck isn't as weighed down as yours but has about 300lb total of added weight on 285 (33's). absolute best i've ever got with extreme hyper miling and driving as fuel efficient as i possibly could was 16.8mpg 90% highway at around 68mph. I normally average around 15-16mpg every tank.
I have 5.29's and the 87 tune with 33's and around the same amount of weight (bumper, winch, DB cover, sliders, roof rack, etc) and average 15-16 mpg as well. Been wondering if the KDMAX tune would help me get better MPG's. To be honest, I'm really surprised by Rizo's gas numbers. That's awesome that he's getting them, but I have never got close to that and I drive like a grandpa.
@@BansheeFingers I just switched to the Valley Runner tune. I'm only about 1/8th of a tank in so it's hard to say for sure much MPG wise yet, but so far my MPG's are up. I'm very happy with this tune so far over OVtune 2.0F It's a daily driver oriented tune with MPG's being at the top, not a performance tune by any means but i'm happy with it so far.
Okay so I was one of the individuals that decided to get the OV Tune from Phil after I saw this tune video. I have a 2021 Tacoma Off-road with 33s and a prinsu roof rack for reference. I’m writing this because I see all these comments about people claiming they’re getting 18-24 mpg with this tune. I did the 91 tune and before the tune I would get 16mpg at best. Now I get 14mpg at best . I got this tune to help me increase mpg but instead I lost. I was thrilled on the throttle response and smoothness of the shift in gears but overall dissatisfied with the MPG. Even if I drive like a straight grandpa on the free way like 50mph, I only get at best 13.9 mpg and if I’m driving at my normal speeds of 70-80mph on the freeway then I’m getting 10-12mpg. So if you’re getting this tune to improve mpg then I wouldn’t suggest getting it at least from my experience. But overall shifting and acceleration is noticeably better.
I got the trd pro intake and I went from a 16mpg to a 18-19mpg. I would never see 19 or 20mpg unless it was a very short trip just after filling up and coasting but afterwards even after half a tank is gone I'm still hovering at 17.8-19
I did mine with this guy Phil. Tune is ok customer service sucks. I was doing 11-13 MPG after time.. I took it to TK-421 I’m up to 15 MPK any day. Also gear shifting is way smoother..
The first Cadillac that my dad bought for my mom was a 1974 with a big block 472 CID V8 engine and a 3 speed automatic transmission. When we were going from Colorado to Southern California my dad set the cruise control on 100mph and that Cadillac got 16mpg. Moms 76 Cadillac with the 500 CID V8 got about the same mileage at 100mph. Her 78 Cadillac with the 425 CID V8 got 18mpg at 100mph. Now our Tacoma’s with less than 300 horsepower, a 6 speed transmission and multi port fuel injection get about the same mileage as those Huge Cadillac’s with much more power and a lot more comfortable.
When I purchased my brand new 2023 Tacoma SR5 v6 4x4, it came fully loaded but with small tires 245/75R/16, almost immediately I installed Bilstein 5100’s all around which raised the front 2” and also installed a 1” block in the back. My gas mileage was 18mpg city and 22.5mpg one the Hwy, when I installed the S&B closed cold air intake I was getting 23.5 on the Hwy, my driving style is just a few miles over the speed limit, here in Sunny FL cops give out speeding tickets like they are giving out Halloween candy. Anyway moving forward I just installed bigger tires Toyo AT3 size 265/75R/16 and my gas mileage is 17mpg in the city and 19.5mpg on the Hwy, I fill up my tank reset the trip meter and on the next fill-up I do the math and it is accurate with my truck’s mpg meter.
24 mpg on a full tank but what was your mpg on the last quarter of the tank? Full tank don’t count. Numbers go down as fuel goes down. I did the KDmax 91 octane and I must say it drove really horrible in my manual transmission. Not smooth and very jerky. I hated my truck. So glad I got my money back and went back to stock
Got this done and it’s been like 2 weeks. So far I don’t notice much but it does have a quicker throttle response. Actually feel like it burns the 91 quicker but will monitoring it to see if my MPG eventually does get better.
@@pewbangpew8109 the throttle response is still there but the MPGs continue to be significantly less than what this video says you could get. I average about 12mpg and it’s all highway driving. I’m on 33s and also have some added weight from the roof rack I have.
@@internet_crush it's been awesome man i still recommend it. Smooth shifting and increased acceleration. Im going to update the tune once I go with larger tires. I feel it's a must if you haven't done a regear yet.
Ive got a 2nd gen tacoma, 4.0 with the 6 speed manual. What tune would you seggest to get the best mpg and possibly a little more power. Thank you for any suggestions and for the content.
Do you have a buddy with a bit more stock Tacoma that did the same tune as you? Can you make a video with that person so I know what I can expect on my taco… it’s not fully stock but close… so I just want to know the just in MPG for a stock taco SR5 or sport
I don’t have a bed rack, but I do have stock suspension, running boards, 265/70R17 w/ TRD wheels and a Tonneau cover. You think I would get about the same with the 87 tune?
I had the 87 OV tune and it didn’t make much of a difference. I recently got the Valley Runner tune and it was significantly better in terms of throttle response, shifting, and MPG’s.
Been working 57 miles from, been letting the truck do all the work ie cruise control set 65 to 70 mph. Truck is getting 23 to 25 mph. Will even will get better when I refer to 4.88!
Local dealer here wants $299 to do the 87 octane OV Tune. I thought 20-21 mpg was bad on my 2017 SR. Guess not. I'll keep running the 85 octane here in Arizona, for $2.54 a gallon btw.
Does anyone have any ideas on how this would perform with a supercharger on the truck? Been thinking about weather or not to get a tune before or after the install.
I live in North Carolina. Where can I get that too because I do pull my trailer and I go to the visits to the doctors like an hour away and I want to say some money
Hey Jessie how does the sibi tune compare to the ovtune i have a 3rd Gen Tacoma with ovtune I’m gonna get regeared to4.88 soon and was wondering what are the differences I have 33’s and no added weight I’m gonna eventually build it up to a prerunner
Serious Q: I just purchased a used 2020 TRD OR with lift and 33s.. No issues with shifting and picks up rather quick.. How can I check/tell if it's been tuned? Avg MPG is 12.5 in town, no accessories or aftermarket bumpers or anything. Thanks!
When I posted the video I tried showing more of the results vs throttle response because that’s hard to capture on camera (but if you like dm me on Instagram) I have videos racing my friends with the same mods as me just there stock and I beat them back to back
Paying for the tune, then paying for the extra price of the gas, with the 91 tune and only getting 5 miles more per gallon, do you actually save any money?
In the long run yes, You also save time not having to gas up everytime before I’d gas up every 3 days now I gas up every 5-6 days so that’s double, I use to get 210-240 max miles per empty now I get between 270-330 miles to empty so I’d say that’s helped for a couple cents more per gallon in time you save and you get your lost time back
@@JesseRizo well in order to prove that Jesse you have to compare the price of gas, for a regular 87 octane, and then for the 91 octane. I know where I live it’s about $.90 more a gallon. I’m going to bet that you might just break even. But all the math I’ve done on the OV tune shows that you don’t breakeven. But your truck runs nicer.
It will still help adjust everything if you have Instagram hit up my friend Phil @moddedbyphil he can explain it way better then I can let him know I sent you
I have icon stage 8 with falken wild peaks LT265 75r16 and the HD ARE camper and manage 18-20 with no tunes. The only time I got 15 was in the middle of the country loaded pretty heavywhere the fuel is bad kansas I remember was the worst. However Denver had some great 19mpg fuel.lol
Don’t take my word as law, but I’ve heard something like…it DOES, but the dealership doesn’t know whether one has been applied or not, so if you don’t tell them, they won’t know. I’m not all too sure though. Plus its easy to just reflash it back to stock if you’re worried
I have the cvc tune and same mpg.. curious if i should get this? Says better response but seems like im slower then stock tacoma but i have bigger tires etc
I am on the fence about getting the CVC tune. They are offering out of Colorado and working with the guys in California. The tuner says it is a much finer refined tune that the Sibi Tune. I am all stock as of now but want 33’s eventually and will do 5.29 gears. My goal is to keep my truck light we don’t fall into the over landing craze but more for day off-roading/hunting etc.
Hey Jess what are your thoughts about toyota putting the 3.5 twin turbo in the tacoma? I myself am going to put the Magnuson on my taco, but if toyota puts that motor in the new taco I'm buying it, if not keeping what I got.
@@JuanManuel-fm9jt where do you get that at in Socal?.. I saw on their map I'd have to drive to Anaheim, but idk... What do you like about KDMax that made it better?
Sprint booster works guys get it 🇺🇸 no changing of the fuel just plug it in and put the setting to red at level 9 feels the same as a tune but it's only $300
Thank you...lol...I got one too and tying to sell the second one and some toyota guys make fun of me what the hell is it when they dont do thier research
no dealer cant tell. ive had OVtune for 35k miles 1.5 years and many services lifted with 275s winch and hybrid bumper. getting what i was getting stock. avg 19mpg shifts better IMO
Ones a performance tune if I’m not mistaken vs ovtune so it all depends I went the safe route and just something to adjust my mpg and truck so that’s why I went ov tune didn’t care to much for the performance side although it did help and it was noticeable
Nope I didn’t get it for that, on our Tacoma’s well mainly all vehicles our intake sucks in air from the bottom where the wheel well is and I have gone threw little river crossing or bigger mud puddles so I always worried I’d suck in that water so I got it for that purpose not to worry, Now I wouldn’t recommend submerging the truck in deep water due to inside the cab u have electrical components like ur ecu and other important electronics so I wouldn’t want that to get damaged or erode and create rust over time and damage them that would be an expensive fix
Are these tunes CA legal? A reputable truck shop told me they wont do tunes anymore due to CA's new smog regulations. Any ECU that doesnt have the OEM tune will fail the smog test. I was planning on getting the KDMax tune.
On the Tacoma world forums someone who does tunes has been getting smoked every 6 months just to provoke his tunes are in compliance. This may change in the future though so maybe wait a bit before flashing.
@@ashalekids That was the issue the truck shop mentioned to me. Them doing the process of going back to the OEM ECU to pass a smog test and then having the customers pay again to reinstall the tune was not worth the hassle. I might just have to save up to do a regear...
Interesting video very informative my Tacoma is a TRD pro so it already takes high octane level so it was interesting to see the difference. I was looking at you in the gas station and you put 91 octane into your truck is that the highest it goes down in California here in Alberta I can get octane level up to 94 however not every gas station carries it I have to say. Is 91 the highest or can you get higher maybe you guys can even get gas higher than 94 would like to know.

Nice video Jesse...man I was getting 15-18mpg and I thought that was bad. 10-13 is REALLY bad, glad the tune help out the Tacoma mpgs.
Yea The trucks all weighed down man LOL :/
Bro your mpg are the same I get without the ov tune do you think its worth it.
@@jessehenry3751 for me ovtune wasn't really about mpg but more about power and shift points being directed. After tuning my truck feels fun to drive.
It’s not for everyone
3 inch life on 33s driving aggressively and idling a ton I get 10-12mpgs most. But if I'm cruising smooth 65mph I can pull 20-22mpgs. Stock gears
I drove up to Yosemite National Park up to 7000 ft Above sea level and my average was 21MPG on a regular tune ,but my truck is stock
Got this done and it’s been like 2 weeks. So far I don’t notice much but it does have a quicker throttle response. Actually feel like it burns the 91 quicker but will monitoring it to see if my MPG eventually does get better.
How’s it going after almost a year?
@@pewbangpew8109 the throttle response is still there but the MPGs continue to be significantly less than what this video says you could get. I average about 12mpg and it’s all highway driving. I’m on 33s and also have some added weight from the roof rack I have.
22 mpg. 3200 miles on a 2021 DCOR. Fill drive refill and do the math. Varied speed about 90 miles. Small towns, back roads.
I got my truck done by Phil as well and it's great. Totally worth it for the 91 octane. It helped out my 5.29s tremendously. Definitely recommend.
Hell yea 💪
I'm considering doing an OVTune + 5.29's -- How's your experience been since originally posting?
@@internet_crush it's been awesome man i still recommend it. Smooth shifting and increased acceleration. Im going to update the tune once I go with larger tires. I feel it's a must if you haven't done a regear yet.
Awesome just hesitant myself longevity of the vehicle and messing with factory settings on a expensive vehicle
Same
Great video man! Loved how simple and straightforward it was and loved how you gave a simple breakdown as well for reference
OV isn’t bad but it’s not great either. If you really want to tune, go KDMax. Best tune available hands down.
The OVTune by Phil was a gamechanger!
How do I get ahold of Phil I don't do instergram
Ive got a 2nd gen tacoma, 4.0 with the 6 speed manual. What tune would you seggest to get the best mpg and possibly a little more power. Thank you for any suggestions and for the content.
I just had my Tacoma lifted and bigger tires. I need to get my speedometer calibrated. Where did you get yours calibrated? Thanks Jesse
Hit up Phil or jason @sibi.built whoever u go with tell them I sent u over and ask them please
Do the KDMAX tune for the OV tune software, it's better than OV's tunes.
Yes
Do you have a buddy with a bit more stock Tacoma that did the same tune as you? Can you make a video with that person so I know what I can expect on my taco… it’s not fully stock but close… so I just want to know the just in MPG for a stock taco SR5 or sport
Stock tires with a bed rack & Phils 87 tune I was getting 26mpg
Damn dude lol! I wish I got that
I don’t have a bed rack, but I do have stock suspension, running boards, 265/70R17 w/ TRD wheels and a Tonneau cover. You think I would get about the same with the 87 tune?
@@UDntNoMeButUWill I’m sure
I had the 87 OV tune and it didn’t make much of a difference. I recently got the Valley Runner tune and it was significantly better in terms of throttle response, shifting, and MPG’s.
Did you get better mpg at all?
Been working 57 miles from, been letting the truck do all the work ie cruise control set 65 to 70 mph. Truck is getting 23 to 25 mph. Will even will get better when I refer to 4.88!
Local dealer here wants $299 to do the 87 octane OV Tune. I thought 20-21 mpg was bad on my 2017 SR. Guess not. I'll keep running the 85 octane here in Arizona, for $2.54 a gallon btw.
Must be nice, it’s $5 in cali
Not anymore it ain't.

I wonder how this would affect my manual transmission 2021 tacoma
im wondering the same thing, also i feel like the cost of 91 might offset getting better mpgs
I'm running kdmax 6.0 with 6mt and love it, power feels great specially at the first 3500 rpm as before it was lagging to climb.
It’s great.
You keep saying the OV Tune. Are you talking about the Overland Tailor / Torque Tune, or what?
Does anyone have any ideas on how this would perform with a supercharger on the truck? Been thinking about weather or not to get a tune before or after the install.
AFTER! IF YOU GET ONE LET ME KNOW WHAT KIND IM LOOKING AS WELL!
Cool name bro
Did you get rid of your pedal commander after your ov tune??
I have it off yes
Serious Q: I just purchased a used 2020 TRD OR with lift and 33s.. No issues with shifting and picks up rather quick.. How can I check/tell if it's been tuned? Avg MPG is 12.5 in town, no accessories or aftermarket bumpers or anything. Thanks!

If the gas cost more what’s the point of a couple more mpg? Asking because I’m getting a Tacoma for a remodeling sales job, I drive 150-300miles a day
I use 87 octane fuel, but I want more power and stop the transmission from hunting for gears
Please contact Phil for you tune let him know Jesse rizo sent you over
@@JesseRizo Where’s he located? I’m 3 hours from Seattle and 3 hours from Spokane
Can you do this tune and still pass smog in ca?
Does that tune void factory warranty?
Most likely
Wish you would've gotten more into the throttle response as well
When I posted the video I tried showing more of the results vs throttle response because that’s hard to capture on camera (but if you like dm me on Instagram) I have videos racing my friends with the same mods as me just there stock and I beat them back to back
I have 33s (255s), sliders, alucab, front skid and never see mpg this high. My taco predicted around 260 miles per tank on fuel up.
I have 33’s (295s) had them for a few months, still predicts 385mpg at fuel up
@@themexicandg dang! I’m still 255-260
Paying for the tune, then paying for the extra price of the gas, with the 91 tune and only getting 5 miles more per gallon, do you actually save any money?
In the long run yes,
You also save time not having to gas up everytime before I’d gas up every 3 days now I gas up every 5-6 days so that’s double,
I use to get 210-240 max miles per empty now I get between 270-330 miles to empty so I’d say that’s helped for a couple cents more per gallon in time you save and you get your lost time back
@@JesseRizo well in order to prove that Jesse you have to compare the price of gas, for a regular 87 octane, and then for the 91 octane. I know where I live it’s about $.90 more a gallon.
I’m going to bet that you might just break even. But all the math I’ve done on the OV tune shows that you don’t breakeven. But your truck runs nicer.
Ok
I have a 2017 sport on 33 mud tires with a 3 inch lift. I get 18 on stock tune.
so what does the tune do for a manual trans?
It will still help adjust everything if you have Instagram hit up my friend Phil @moddedbyphil he can explain it way better then I can let him know I sent you
I have icon stage 8 with falken wild peaks LT265 75r16 and the HD ARE camper and manage 18-20 with no tunes. The only time I got 15 was in the middle of the country loaded pretty heavywhere the fuel is bad kansas I remember was the worst. However Denver had some great 19mpg fuel.lol
Yooooo !!! Covina resident rite here !!!
You at the renaissance at the very end ?
How did you know 🔥
Does this void your factory warranty?
Don’t take my word as law, but I’ve heard something like…it DOES, but the dealership doesn’t know whether one has been applied or not, so if you don’t tell them, they won’t know. I’m not all too sure though. Plus its easy to just reflash it back to stock if you’re worried
How you guys get mpg higher I have 5.29 on 33’s with a tune but get 12 mpg city and like 15 highway
With that tune can you still pass smog since your in Cali
I did the kdmax tune what a different truck from response to shifting.
I haven't done this Mod yet? wait 91 at these prices? F it I'm good! nice video!
I'm running kdmaxx on 87
I'm fairly new to all of this but what is the actual name of this tuning?
Ov tune
Cost per mile? How much extra does it cost to put it 91? MPG doesn't tell the whole story! Please let me know the results!
Do you know how this tune will work with a manual transmission.
Yeah I was wondering the same! I want to break 21 mpg haha!
I’m not 100 percent sure lol I’d hit up Phil and ask man @moddedbyphil he can answer ur question on this better than me
Kdmaxx 6.0 on 87 works great w manual, I'm getting 20mpg around town no matter how hard I drive.
How much are you weighing down your truck for 12mpg!!!
Anyone knows anyone in Louisiana that does the tune?
I have the cvc tune and same mpg.. curious if i should get this? Says better response but seems like im slower then stock tacoma but i have bigger tires etc
I am on the fence about getting the CVC tune. They are offering out of Colorado and working with the guys in California. The tuner says it is a much finer refined tune that the Sibi Tune. I am all stock as of now but want 33’s eventually and will do 5.29 gears. My goal is to keep my truck light we don’t fall into the over landing craze but more for day off-roading/hunting etc.
Would there be any difference if done w/ a manual transmission?
Are those TRD pro upper control arms or JBA? I want the trd pro ones, but I hear they are $1100 a piece. Thats insane.
Hey Jess what are your thoughts about toyota putting the 3.5 twin turbo in the tacoma? I myself am going to put the Magnuson on my taco, but if toyota puts that motor in the new taco I'm buying it, if not keeping what I got.

Check out the video I made on it here ruclips.net/video/199pA5mRRXA/видео.html
Would it work on a 2011 tacoma?
would you recommend OVtune over KDMaxx?
Ones a performance tune if I’m not mistaken vs ovtune so it all depends I went the safe route and just something to adjust my mpg and truck so that’s why I went ov tune didn’t care to much for the performance side although it did help and it was noticeable
Kdmaxx
KD max for the win, it’s a game changer.
Does that void your warranty???
Have u ever used the snorkel in deep deep water?
Nope I didn’t get it for that, on our Tacoma’s well mainly all vehicles our intake sucks in air from the bottom where the wheel well is and I have gone threw little river crossing or bigger mud puddles so I always worried I’d suck in that water so I got it for that purpose not to worry,
Now I wouldn’t recommend submerging the truck in deep water due to inside the cab u have electrical components like ur ecu and other important electronics so I wouldn’t want that to get damaged or erode and create rust over time and damage them that would be an expensive fix
How did the transmission perform?
What about a Manuel transmission
Is there any other way to hit him up? I don't have Instagram
Why did you go with this tune and not the Sibi tune in OC? Is this one better for the Tacoma?
Just wanted to give this one a shot. Sibi tune is also good and reputable it’s more of a performance tune
@@JesseRizo I ended up going with the KD Max tune. So far i'm impressed.
Has anyone hand calculated these results? I have seen a lot of computers be WAY off when you hand calculate mileage by gallons used.
Ive checked the stock ecu vs gas at the pump and it was identical to the tenth. No idea if tune changes the calculations but stock its exact on mine
I get about 385 mpt with my stock 16 trd off road taco

Are you regeared to 4.88 or 5.29’s? If not, any plans to do so or did the tune made that big of a difference?

Are these tunes CA legal? A reputable truck shop told me they wont do tunes anymore due to CA's new smog regulations. Any ECU that doesnt have the OEM tune will fail the smog test. I was planning on getting the KDMax tune.
On the Tacoma world forums someone who does tunes has been getting smoked every 6 months just to provoke his tunes are in compliance. This may change in the future though so maybe wait a bit before flashing.
You could always tune back to stock when smog comes around doe
You can always reflash back to oem
If you reflash back to OEM, wouldn't you pay again?
@@ashalekids That was the issue the truck shop mentioned to me. Them doing the process of going back to the OEM ECU to pass a smog test and then having the customers pay again to reinstall the tune was not worth the hassle. I might just have to save up to do a regear...
