My Dad just got a 23 Tacoma with the JBL head unit. He was bummed it didn't have a CD player. 2016 TRD Off Road here. 94k on it no major issues. Mine never got the wet headliner (small miracle) before I got the recall done./ All it is is silcone and a plastic bevel. Overall pretty happy with the truck.
2020 TRD Sport DCLB 4x4. Almost 4 years and no issues to report. Just recommended service. 5k oil changes tho. Oh one small issue is the fuel door hinges will dry out, creak and bind causing the fuel door to hit the truck body. I just keep it lubed now and it swings freely without the bind.
Change your front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluid every 30K miles as well. I LOVE my 23 TRD ORLB. I installed a cold air intake and the Overland Torque Tune (OTT). That’s a bad ass truck , I wouldn’t trade my 2021 TRD ORDC 4x4 for anything out there , I bought it brand new and now with 62k miles on it and it’s running like brand new , and I do tow my car behind it trailer and car combo is 6k pounds and it pulls it just fine even in the hills in Arizona . By the way that 3.5L V6 is detuned from Toyota for longevity, it’s a bullet proof motor VERY robust , it has a 6 bolt main which I will bet not to many trucks have more than a 4bolt main , my power wagon was a 4 bolt main with 6.4L , I just absolutely love these Gen3’s !
Nice review. I also have an early 2017 bought in Aug 2016 and I am approaching 100K. No real issues, still on original brakes and spark plugs. Also 33" skinnies. I did regear to 4:88 since I live in Colorado which helped the truck significantly.
Saying original sparkplugs mean nothing it's a maintenance item that at 30 to 50k should be replaced 100k on the same plugs just indicates poor maintenance oil change is extremely important but so are the other maintenance items
Now have the Overland Torque Tune and your tranny will STOP hunting for the right gear. It also increases your horsepower and torque by 25, while giving you better mpg. I installed the OTT and a cold air intake on my 23 TRD Off Road double cab, 6’ bed. I’m now getting 22mpg at 82-90mph here in north central Washington state and on our trips to central MT. Cheers Mate
Saying original spark plugs means that it’s original and still works without replacement… that means reliability, even if we have neglected to change them right when recommended. Relax man it’s not like it’s your truck
@@Doc1855 I have the same Overland torque tune and it made the truck much more drivable without all the gear hunting. and better gas milage. Id recommend it to anyone with a third gen tacoma.
Bro for putting it through the ringer like you said, the truck looks awesome! Please do not listen to negative comments there are always haters, cause they want one! I have a 2016 and it's been great 👍
I changed my plugs at 55K and was glad I did. Change them when the engine is cold of course. You will need to push down on the tab of the wiring harness with a screwdriver and pull the plug off with a pair of pliers. They are stuck on there pretty good. Bought my plugs at the dealership to make sure I’d be getting the real thing.
If you haven't looked at bed stiffeners already I would consider it. I have a 2nd Gen Reg. Cab and I have about 160K on it and I have noticed one side is starting to bow out..Just something to keep in the back of your mind..Beautiful truck!
I noticed if I spray white lithium grease on the frame where it’s shows rust it keeps it from reappearing also in and around the trailer hitch is a good idea.
Beautiful truck. I like the TRD door badge with the Tacoma door badge and TRD bed decal delete. Looks very clean. I bought a 23 TRD OR at the end of 2022 because I wanted a tried and true proven truck to keep for a long time. The new 2024 redesign hype is just that. It’s not proven and won’t be for at least 5 years. Wait until all the gremlins start coming out. I recommend getting a 2023 before they sell out because once the last one is sold they will become instant collectors items. Keep them clean and maintained and you will never lose money on them. I use the hell out of mine hauling, overlanding and daily driving and it has been perfect. Couple questions in regards to your lift. Any issues with your CV axle, boots etc? I’m looking to do a mild 2” lift to fit 32” tires. Also with your tire setup have you noticed any significant engine performance issues? Thanks.
No issues with the lift or anything wearing. From what I’ve found, 3 inch lift or under doesn’t change the angles of the front end enough to cause issues with CVs, ball joints etc. regarding my tires, I haven’t noticed anything different performance wise. I’ve got 285/70/17s on now, and they don’t seem to be heavy enough for anything to change as far as towing or even gas mileage dropping. I feel like anything 33 inch or under is safe
Good stuff fella, I also have a 17 off road with 116k and have no major complaints either. Oil change, tires and my first set of brakes at 105k. I live on the north east rust belt and can’t really complain about the frame either.👍😃✌️🇺🇸💪
I have the OTT tune in mine. It is a night and day difference. Best $500 I have ever spent on a truck. No issues and even slightly better gas mileage. No more lurching acceleration and gear hunting transmission. The dealership never even noticed it. My Taco lives in the Cascade mountains, elk hunting and pulling a travel trailer. I have never had an issue.
The OTT rocks ! I had it installed on my 23 TRD right before going on vacation to MT. At 82-90 mph, I was still getting 23mpg. I also installed a cold air intake. My TRD came with the TRD Performance exhaust system. My truck now has 318 horsepower and 295 lbs ft of torque.
do them sparks bro! lowkey really easy.... I even made a short showing how easy it is mang. Will help you pick up a little of any lost power you might be feeling brotha. Nice truck tho! got 65k on my 2021 OR and I haven't had any major issues either. Drives like a new truck still.
On that light, yes they had a recall and it is still open. Call your dealer, they will order the parts and fix that for free. They will also fix any water damage to the fabric. I have the 2017 SR. Even got a free rental, though they knocked it out in half a day.
I have the exact same truck, but yours is definitely more tricked out. I'm especially impressed with the grill. Mine is still silver stock. Where did you get that grill? Was it easy to swap out?
Thanks! Yeah the grill and door badges I switched out to make it look more of my own rather than stock. Grill was easy, mostly clips and screws from what I remember. Took me maybe 30 min from start to finish and ordered the TOYOTA grill online for 160 ish bucks I think
I have a 2017, and my steering wheel is the exact same...I also had the 3rd brake light water leak. Currently sitting at 150k with zero mechanical issues. One thing I'll say is the engine is an absolute dog, especially with the manual transmission. I feel like I'm beating it to keep up with traffic, but it still hasn't failed me, so I can't complain too much.
The 3rd gen is a great looking truck.... Im on my 4th Tacoma, ive had a 89,13,20,and now a 23 and will be my last cause the 2024 having a new 4cyl turbo just doesn't do it for me cause why change what's been a reliable motor! Your truck looks great! I have the same color Sport and looking to lift and change out wheels soon.
My 2016, AC high pressure sensor had to be replace at 100K. OTher than that it great and reliable truck. My average MPG on the highway is 19 traveling at 75-84 MPH
That’s a bad ass truck , I wouldn’t trade my 2021 TRD ORDC 4x4 for anything out there bought it brand new and now with 62k miles on it and it’s running like brand new and I do tow my car behind it trailer and car combo is 6k pounds and it pulls it just fine even in the hills in Arizona
when I tow my 6k lbs trailer behind the Tacoma I always turn on the ECT and just leave it in sport and select 4th gear unless I’m just on a flat road for miles and miles ,than I will shift up to 5th gear , no gear hunting not even going up 4% grades in Arizona in 115 deg weather , I do use 91 octane though every time I fill up, because I did notice a difference in how much more the truck livened up, and I got better fuel mileage compared to 87 octane
None at all. Had the lift on since 15k miles. 3 inch lift or under doesn’t change the angles enough to create premature wear from my experience with this truck. Had a 2.5-3 inch on the front (coilovers) and never had any problems with ball joints etc. I did do aftermarket UCAs about a year ago for fun, but the stock ones worked fine when I had them on too
Trade Up and get a 2023 while you can ! you truck is NICE and will have Great Resale value at 100,000 miles. . All New Toyotas (except 2024 4runner) are Built without Quality , RELIABILITY and LONGEVITY in mind . Company Has Lost its Bulletproof Vision Recently !
I mean they are changing things most people were complaining about... No power? Improved. Bad efficiency? Improved. Gear hunting? Improved(3RD gen Tacoma specific.).. No manufacturer is exempt from first model year problems. Especially when they changed the entire drivetrain to address the issues with previous gens. All that said, I will be keeping my 17 Sport with the 6 Speed for a LONG time.
@@Donut833 Never had a problem With the Tacoma six speed ! I drive all my Toyotas in shift mode ! the 6 speed trans is bulletproof ! Gear hunting Is worse in a 8 or ten speed trans when going through mountains ! Especially when towing a trailer !
I have a John Deere 870 and a dual axle flatbed and I’ve been wondering if my ‘22 TRD Off Road Taco can tow it, with implement, to my farm. It’s only about a 4-5 mile drive from my house and mainly flat land. I see you tow a similar size tractor too. How does your truck manage??
The truck is rated for 6400 lbs towing. I’ve found that 5000 lbs or over is when the truck will work noticeably harder, but it always has got the job done.I’ve gone 3-4 hours with heavy loads (roughly 5000lbs) maybe a little over, and it’s fine, you just can’t drive quite as fast and have to listen to your truck gear hunt and run rpms higher than normal. Bad gas mileage too (13mpg) So I guess it depends on how heavy you’re talking on pulling, but from my experiences, it’s underpowered, but not under capable. Itll handle what you need it to, but your motor is gunna be working. Hope that makes sense
Seats held up good. Really no excessive wear. Th outer edge on the driver seat is starting to show wear, but nothing bad yet. Tuck is lifted so I’m sitting on the edge of it a lot when I get in and out. As far as oil changes and oil filter every 5-7k miles.
2016 Tacoma Sport 140k miles on it. Purchased in 2017 wit 19k miles Here are my issues -Blind Spot monitoring system not working -wireless charging not working -AC not as Cold Thats it
Nice. Mine doesn’t have the blind spot monitor so I haven’t had that issue. Never really use my wireless charger but still works and AC seems to be fine.prob needs a recharge on yours. Thanks for sharing!!
Look into one of those window sun shield things to put up on your truck. A lot if times the dash will heat up and the a/c wont be ad cold because everything else around it is so hot
Nah no aftermarket gears or tune. Ironically, I’ve found that suburb driving 35-55 mph is the best. Typically I get about 21 mpg locally. But yeah, the best efficiency the computer on the truck calculated was 24. Does worse on the free way lol makes no sense
@@timbear3175damn I’m from that area. I don’t drive my taco during the winter, I use my old Chevy because I’ve been worried while making payments on this 23’ TRD would rust out before I payed it off
Going through rivers past the doors is probably you got the rust issue on the frame . A good wax job and WD-40 can prevent this . WD-40 repels moisture while it still lubricated. Service your taco like AIRFORCE 1.
Get the OTT Tune. You will see the big difference. It will be fast, strong. No more gear hunting or sluggish engine. Also, get K&N air filter. I got a better fuel mileage.
@@uberleet01 We will have to disagree on that. Iv had a K&N in just about every vehicle Iv ever owned and driven my tundra with one to over 200k and never had a single problem. I have one in my 2017 tacoma, it's got 110k on it with no problems. If you clean and oil them right they work well.
2.5-3 inch toytec boss. I recently replaced my toytec coilovers and remote- reservoir shocks with Rough County 3 inch struts and 1-3 inch RC rear shocks after the Toytec ones wore out. I’ll prob do a video on my suspension eventually. Lots of questions about it
1.5 in the rear with add a leafs, and 2.5-3 in the front. Had 2.5 inch toytec coilovers until 2022. Replaced them with RC 3 inch coilovers. But the height measures the samewith the 3 inch RCs, so no sure what that was about lol but yeah. 2.5-3 ish
You can keep those new 2024 4 banger Tacos that cost 55k. My 21 loaded offroad ($41k out the door) with 15k miles tows my boat and gets me where I’m going with no worries. A 4 banger will burn up towing a trailer. I’ll get 300k out of my motor no sweat.
Yeah seriously. I was pretty disappointed when I first heard all 4 gens are 4bangers. I always had the plan of trading 17 in for a 4th gen but at this point I’m thinking just keep mine until it dies in 2087 lol
@@timbear3175 you certainly do…! Please share the mods and what really was a value for the performance….my 2010 is bone stock and time to give it some love…it’s off road everyday I drive it…till I reach pavement a mile away…need shock upgrade and maybe r hangers….got air bags…but they maybe wasted.
There are more important things that can be addressed. How is the transmission? Many complaints on hunting for gears. Is towing worse for hunting gears? Where was it made? It'll tell you on the door jamb. Several people complained that the Mexico made trucks fit and finishes are not as nice.
Transmission is fine, it does gear hunt when going over 70mph with a trailer, but never has given me issues. More of an annoyance than anything. My truck was made in Mexico.
I have a 2017 and your going to think this guys and idiot but I have and sr and it came with the most basic radio and it took me dix months to realize I had a cd player witch is great because I have hundreds of cds.
The only throttle booster I trust is the BANKS throttle monster. Why do I say that? I did research and tried the device and it improved the truck a lot. As mentioned in your vid, not a lot of power with these trucks but improving the throttle response makes a nice, positive improvement. I had a 21 SR5 and now I have a 23 TRD OR. Awesome truck and if I had to compare this truck to a pistol, I’d say that a Tacoma is like a Glock, a G19 to be specific….. a gen 3 😉🫡

Appreciate you tuning in! Yeah man, the motor isn’t anything special performance wise, but def bulletproof 🤙
That’s how I feel about my 23 TRD ORLB.
Great video! Thanks for posting ❤❤
'04 5VZ 4WD 5spd TRD @ 200K miles. Daily driver. $26K new. Still runs strong 💪🏽😎
Bro for putting it through the ringer like you said, the truck looks awesome! Please do not listen to negative comments there are always haters, cause they want one! I have a 2016 and it's been great 👍
Thanks for tuning in bro! Yeah lol surprisingly most of the feedback has been pretty positive so far
Thanks for the rec!
What a fantastic review. Thanks
I have the same year and the TRD Off Road too
Great review and spot on. I have a Taco myself 👍
@@timbear3175 Thanks for taking the time to respond. Very helpful. Much appreciated.
Good stuff fella, I also have a 17 off road with 116k and have no major complaints either. Oil change, tires and my first set of brakes at 105k. I live on the north east rust belt and can’t really complain about the frame either.👍😃✌️🇺🇸💪
Thanks for tuning in man! Hope your truck keeps doing well for ya
Great review!! Do it again at 200k lol
Thanks for tuning in! Might look into that
The OTT rocks !
23’ Pro Manual OTT - 23.5 mpg Canadian tank avg
I just got a 2023 trd pro and watching. Got 2500 miles on it haha. Got it new. Hope it last. MGM gang baby
do them sparks bro! lowkey really easy.... I even made a short showing how easy it is mang. Will help you pick up a little of any lost power you might be feeling brotha. Nice truck tho! got 65k on my 2021 OR and I haven't had any major issues either. Drives like a new truck still.
Cool 😎 thanks for the update
Great video
On that light, yes they had a recall and it is still open. Call your dealer, they will order the parts and fix that for free. They will also fix any water damage to the fabric. I have the 2017 SR. Even got a free rental, though they knocked it out in half a day.
Thanks for sharing!
Nice video!😊
I have the exact same truck, but yours is definitely more tricked out. I'm especially impressed with the grill. Mine is still silver stock. Where did you get that grill? Was it easy to swap out?
Thanks! Yeah the grill and door badges I switched out to make it look more of my own rather than stock. Grill was easy, mostly clips and screws from what I remember. Took me maybe 30 min from start to finish and ordered the TOYOTA grill online for 160 ish bucks I think
Great video! Thanks for sharing..
Ay, good to hear man, thanks for chiming in. Yeah I’ll take a flaky steering wheel and break light issue over motor problems any day
I can't believe u went 100k without window tint??!.....nice truck bro, I'm loving my 23 TRD OR!
Front windows are tinted a little but not as dark as the stock rear ones
The 3rd gen is a great looking truck.... Im on my 4th Tacoma, ive had a 89,13,20,and now a 23 and will be my last cause the 2024 having a new 4cyl turbo just doesn't do it for me cause why change what's been a reliable motor! Your truck looks great! I have the same color Sport and looking to lift and change out wheels soon.
Maganson makes a supercharger kit for the 3rd gen taco!
I've seen people on youtube get old steering wheels back to almost new. Might be hope.
I have 102k on my 2019 TRD off road and have had zero issues with it. I got 101k on the original brakes!
My 2016, AC high pressure sensor had to be replace at 100K. OTher than that it great and reliable truck. My average MPG on the highway is 19 traveling at 75-84 MPH
Noise is a problem.. Iam hearing impaired, ha. Good truck.
Good to hear. Mine at 5k towing likes to gear hunt and rev higher than I’d like it to, but always does the job.
when I tow my 6k lbs trailer behind the Tacoma I always turn on the ECT and just leave it in sport and select 4th gear unless I’m just on a flat road for miles and miles ,than I will shift up to 5th gear , no gear hunting not even going up 4% grades in Arizona in 115 deg weather , I do use 91 octane though every time I fill up, because I did notice a difference in how much more the truck livened up, and I got better fuel mileage compared to 87 octane
@@timbear3175 just use shift mode when towing so you can hold what ever gear you want ! never towed any other way with mine !
Any problems after lifting it , cv's etc
Nice truck I have the same exact one 23 😊
My Tacoma is a 2022 TRD OFF ROAD
Prob would haul your 870 tractor easily for a few miles
Wish I could buy a single cab, 4cyl with manual transmission as a daily driver.
Whenever you get the chance go for it man it’ll last you forever
I have a 23 SR5, 4x4. How have your seats held up? How often do you change your oil and filter? Thx.
Seats held up good. Really no excessive wear. Th outer edge on the driver seat is starting to show wear, but nothing bad yet. Tuck is lifted so I’m sitting on the edge of it a lot when I get in and out. As far as oil changes and oil filter every 5-7k miles.
@@timbear3175 thank you sir.
2016 Tacoma Sport 140k miles on it. Purchased in 2017 wit 19k miles Here are my issues
-Blind Spot monitoring system not working
-wireless charging not working
-AC not as Cold
Thats it
Are you in the U.P.
Dang, you got a best of 23-24 mpgs on 285s? Are you re-geared by chance?
Nah no aftermarket gears or tune. Ironically, I’ve found that suburb driving 35-55 mph is the best. Typically I get about 21 mpg locally. But yeah, the best efficiency the computer on the truck calculated was 24. Does worse on the free way lol makes no sense
About 5’8 means 5’7. ;)
lol bruhh
Haha same
Have you ever changed out your diff oil ?
if youre contemplating on doing this DIY, one of the easiest fluid changes to do on the truck
Yes I did both front and rear dif fluid, transfer case grease and coolant flush. Did them in between 70-100k miles give or take
What state are you in I have a 2015 trd off road taco with 0% rust anywhere.. 158k miles no unscheduled stuff just regular maintenance
Illinois / Wisconsin
@@timbear3175damn I’m from that area. I don’t drive my taco during the winter, I use my old Chevy because I’ve been worried while making payments on this 23’ TRD would rust out before I payed it off
@@DanBrandoyeah man.. salt is brutal. Hindsight should have bought a beater for the winter
Going through rivers past the doors is probably you got the rust issue on the frame . A good wax job and WD-40 can prevent this . WD-40 repels moisture while it still lubricated. Service your taco like AIRFORCE 1.
Prob right. I like the wd40 idea. Thanks for tuning in!
Get the OTT Tune. You will see the big difference. It will be fast, strong. No more gear hunting or sluggish engine. Also, get K&N air filter. I got a better fuel mileage.
k&n filters particulates so incredibly poorly its like not even having an air filter on
@@uberleet01 We will have to disagree on that. Iv had a K&N in just about every vehicle Iv ever owned and driven my tundra with one to over 200k and never had a single problem. I have one in my 2017 tacoma, it's got 110k on it with no problems. If you clean and oil them right they work well.
What lift kit are you running
2.5-3 inch toytec boss. I recently replaced my toytec coilovers and remote- reservoir shocks with Rough County 3 inch struts and 1-3 inch RC rear shocks after the Toytec ones wore out. I’ll prob do a video on my suspension eventually. Lots of questions about it
Do you know if the motor is cast iron or aluminum ?
Aluminum surprisingly
Did you do oil changes every 10K or 5K?
5-7k. 7k was pushing it tho
2017 SR5 at 70k. No issues.
The door panels will get scratches from your finger nails really easily I have found.
How many inches of lift did you put on your truck?
Just do 3” anything after that you’ll need to start getting more aftermarket parts. Most people run 3” lifts on it
1.5 in the rear with add a leafs, and 2.5-3 in the front.
I'd rather have that than the 2024 crappy Tacos!
What driveline upgrades?
None. I do have front and rear dif drop kit for the lift, but I didn’t really touch base on anything that wasn’t stock from Toyota.
Ceramic wax the Inside of your door jams
Not a bad idea! Help water roll off those spots
My truck was made in Mexico.
well yea its a low miles. try 380000 dude next to me gatting gas and loving his 2nd gen tacoma
“Yeah idk… reliability.”
?
You got rats in your engine bay thanks for the video
lol yeah prob some mice on that engine cover judging by the tracks
Its a pick up truck, of course its plastic
I have a 2017 and your going to think this guys and idiot but I have and sr and it came with the most basic radio and it took me dix months to realize I had a cd player witch is great because I have hundreds of cds.
I got a new steering wheel for you if you $40.. plus shipping want it ..changed mine out only have like 3k miles..lmk ...pm
27k in my 22’ and I’ve been to the dealer like 15 times for issues.
Dang, sorry to hear that. What issues did you have?
It looks corny with those door emblems.
Looks cool to me
Not enough bed space? No that's not how it is. It's called a short bed versus a long bed. Always go long bed
Still not wide tho. Long bed means long wheel base, which makes trail turns pretty challenging. Always a trade off
@@timbear3175 that's right, you are an off roader. Makes sense.
This dork keeps saying leather, what he means to say is vinyl.
Yeah you’re right. Big mistake on my part…
@@timbear3175 thanks for being so graciously humble
The only throttle booster I trust is the BANKS throttle monster. Why do I say that? I did research and tried the device and it improved the truck a lot. As mentioned in your vid, not a lot of power with these trucks but improving the throttle response makes a nice, positive improvement.
I had a 21 SR5 and now I have a 23 TRD OR. Awesome truck and if I had to compare this truck to a pistol, I’d say that a Tacoma is like a Glock, a G19 to be specific….. a gen 3 😉🫡
