On the fence between taco trd or a f150. I am a yota fan but the complaints about the transmission had me worried. Your video just put the taco back on top.
Probably depends on what you wanna use the truck for. I wanted a mid size so I can fit on trails. And honestly, if you plan to keep it stock the transmission is fine unless you're towing or hauling. Even then, you can just use the manual mode.
Responding just in case someone comes across your comment. Thanks for watching!! The short answer is yes, probably. Check out this video where I talk a little more about it: ruclips.net/video/wKrK-2aqO_M/видео.html
I just bought a used 2021 Tacoma with 17,000 miles on it. I think I need this. The truck seems doggy off the line and seems like it doesn't know what gear it wants to be in. Does this mod affect my warranty?
Short answer is yes it could affect warranty. However, it would be hard for a dealership to tell that it's tuned and even harder for them to prove that it caused any issues.
Knightacoma, how can I get in touch with the guy that did your tunes? I really don't want to take my truck to my Toyota dealership as they are all about soaking you with the cost. Any info of anyone doing the tunes in North Carolina would be sincerely appreciated.
Hey man check out the map that I linked in the description. That's the map of KDMax certified tuners. I have a couple other videos about the tunes too that I'd suggest watching before going to get tuned🤙🏼 also, Toyota doesn't do the tunes they just do an ECU update which you tuner will do as well
I'm not sure if there is a tune available for the 4Runner. Last I heard the ECU hasn't been unlocked/figured out yet to where someone can make a tune for it.
I’m thinking about doing this on my 2018 off road. A while back the Orange Virus was $750 but now I can easily get a local guy to do it for $250. I’m not sure what’s going on. Are they the same tune?
Yes same tune. Previously OVTune was pretty exclusive to authorized installers but recently they started licensing it to anybody under a new name VFTuner. At least that’s my understanding haha
Anyone know if this would void warranties? I have a 2019 trd offroad and I feel a lot of "drag" and even some rough downshifts when I am braking. Also anyone know someone in south Florida who does tunes?
Check out my second video where I talk a little more about the tune: ruclips.net/video/wKrK-2aqO_M/видео.html I also put a map of the tuners in the video description. A guy name Victor does them in FL so let him know I sent you!
Is there a place where non-Facebook people can find local tuners? Everyone on Tacoma World only wants to talk about the K&D Performance tune and I think the OVTune might be more for me with my stock Tacoma. Not going to be an Overloader or run big tires or lift. Just looking for a reputable and experienced local OVTuner in Phoenix.
Not quite sure. I'd suggest maybe asking in the Arizona threads on TacomaWorld. Odds are someone will at least be able to point you in the right direction.
Appreciate it! Definitely worth it if you're experiencing those issues. Might be worth it to first try calling local dealerships and see if they'll do the TSB for free
Alright, just started the video amd I'm jealous. Not yet jealous with not having the OV tune, but the damn sunglasses. What brand style are those. I'm no where near a tropical area, so you won't see them on me, but if you tell me what they are and the state you're in I promise not to where then if I get vst tht state. Hopefully, you're not in CO. Ok, gonna watch the rest of the video and call my dealership to see if the YTSB was performed in my tacoma
Hahaha they're the Costa Rinconcito I believe. Got them as a Christmas present but love them! The lenses are glass & polarized so they do really well with cutting glare. Would definitely recommend!
Oh man, all those issues with the shifting is one of the biggest gripes with this truck. The lag, gear hunting, and weird shifting when accelerating is so annoying. I wonder if that tsb is for 2019 tacoma's too.
Yes the TSB should be for 2019 Tacomas as well. Definitely ask your dealership about it haha The shifting & bluetooth connectivity are the only things I had issues with lol
@@marcoallende3683 Dope! Yeah that was the goal for this video haha I learned about the TSB the day before going to get tuned & I couldn't believe I hadn't heard of it. If I hadn't already committed to getting the tune I probably would have just called dealerships & got the TSB lol
I got about 2-3MPG gain for city driving. Highway didn't change much, MAYBE 1-2 MPG if anything. However some people don't see any MPG gain I've heard.
As far as warranty, yes it would technically void your warranty I believe. However, I personally think it would be hard to a dealer to prove a) that you had an aftermarket tune and b) that the tune specifically caused whatever issue you are trying to make a warranty claim on (see: Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act) Take this with a grain of salt as I am no lawyer and can't give legal advice lol
I definitely thought about that. My suggestion would be to see if you have a dealer willing to do the TSB for free & see if that fixes your issues. I think the TSB mainly calms down the errant shifting & the OVTune is built on top of it to make better shift points and throttle response throughout the power band.
What year is your Tacoma? I’m looking at either a pre owned’22 or a new ‘23, just curious if the new ones need an OV tune. Also if there is a service bulletin out on them. Really liked your video, reassured me.
I had a 19. There was a TSB for the older ones but I believe all 2020+ were "fixed" Either way, I think the tune does make a difference. Newer trucks still have the same sluggish transmission
Wait there’s something to fix the throttle lag in the Tacomas?? Could you tell me more about this TSB tune? I’m trying to get my truck modded a little bit and an OV tune, but this is the first I’m hearing of the TSB! Edit: I’m assuming if I were to ask a dealership for this tune I would just ask them to flash my ECU to the latest firmware?
I don't know too much about the TSB other than it's meant to help with the gear hunting. That said, the dealership would know more about it so you can ask them if your truck is eligible to get it. If you have a newer truck, you may already have the TSB version for your ECU. In that case, you may want to look into getting a tune instead.
@@KnightWheelsMedia Awesome! Going to try and update the ECU tomorrow at a dealership if it isn’t already the latest. Do you know if I were to get 33” tires and a lift, would I need to retune it again? (And by that, I kind of mean should I get a tune before or after all that?) I’m looking at the KDMax tune now instead though, seems to be a good tune.
I'd definitely recommend letting the truck break in first at least 1000mi. But honestly with a 2021 you should have the most upgraded ECU version so you'll probably only want to do a tune if you want some performance gains or notice some dips in the power bands.
With all the different people that can put this tune in your truck is it the same tune or are these guys able to tweak it? Just wouldn’t want to get it from someone who thinks they know more than they do.
Typically they should be able to tweak the tune based on tire size, armor, etc. However I believe there is like a "stock" or generic OVTune if you're worried about it. Whoever you find to do it I'd just suggest asking all your questions and if they won't take the time to answer them then it's probably better to move on and find someone else lol Also, I believe there are "certified" OVTune installers so you could look into that as well.
Technically, yes. However it would be hard for anyone to actually tell that your truck is tuned. Check out my other two videos about tuning where I talk about it a little more 🤙🏼
So it really depends on the guy doing it. Anybody can buy the software licensing, and OBDII cable to do the tune. The guy who did my tune was on the lower end but typically they'll be around $200-250. I'd say the range overall is anywhere from $150-300. Like I said, mine was on the lowest end of that lol but I agreed not to post the price specifically. Hope that helps!
It's the 87 octane tune. Mainly wanted it for the gear hunting/power lag fix rather than performance. Unfortunately I lost some footage where I was describing the tune in more detail and didn't realize it when editing lol
Best mod you can do to a Tacoma hands down. Forget all the cosmetic crap. Get it tuned first, or right after you lift it, or get bigger tires. Also get the TRD air filter for it. Thank me later.
@@KnightWheelsMedia if I had to do it again I would eat peanut butter and jelly and ramen every day even giving up beer just to get it. Got it for $6200 otd so check those deals. Its not impossible.
With a new 2021 Tacoma, you should have the latest TSB update for the ECU. So the transmission shift points shouldn't be as bad on your truck. I'd say drive it for a while & if you feel that you're having lack of power, bad shift points, etc. then maybe look into getting it tuned.
Dyno results show a decent increase in HP/TQ, so I think it's safe to say the truck has a bit more get up and go. I don't think it's an insanely noticeable difference, but the power band is definitely better imo.
Hey man, thanks for the video! Quick question do you know if I need the TSB upgrade if I have a 2021 taco? I am doing the OV tune in a week or so and was wondering if I need the TSB update
Great question. You might be okay with a 2021 if it has the most upgraded version. I'd ask your OVTune guy about it. He should be able to do it. My guy's software checked for the update first & made him upgrade it before he could do the tune.
@@Ctrnr1995 not quite sure what you mean by "canned tunes"? But you can buy the software and do it yourself for around $1k or someone else can do it for roughly $200-300
Potentially but you may not notice a huge difference. Being a '21 you should already have the most updated ECU version (the TSB) I didn't really feel the need for the tune until I got bigger tires, lift, roof rack, bed rack, etc. The weight & drag really makes the transmission struggle with the shift points haha
Where do these people “get the tune”? It’s a computer upgrade and no offense but it looked like you guys all met n wal mart parking lot. Where do I find the guys in my area with a “tune”. What did it do if anything to gas mileage?
The company that made the tune started licensing it out, so people can buy the necessary software and tune their trucks or others. So you can find people who bought the software & licenses to do the tune for you, hence the random meet up location. So you can either buy the software & license (around $1k+ startup costs) and tune yourself or you can ask around on local Tacoma FB groups or TacomaWorld to see if anyone is doing them in your area. As far as MPG, I gained around 2-3 city but highway is roughly the same, if not slightly better.
@@stevog44 is your truck a 4x4? Could potentially be a needle bearing. With some lifted 4x4 Tacomas the needle bearing goes out & requires an ECGS bushing to remedy. Check if your vibration goes away when you switch it into 4x4
@@KnightWheelsMedia yep 4x tundra. No real vibration except for a slight shimmy in the rear upon takeoff after installing the icon rxt leaf pack, which pretty much goes away when I’m loaded down. I’m more concerned w the searching and holding of gears. Flawless on the 275s. A bit sluggish w the 35s. Gears are going to help me a lot.
@@stevog44 haha oops for some reason I thought you commented on my vibration fix video! Disregard the vibration comment lol But yeah I agree once you're up to 35" tires a re-gear is the main fix
oh no haha if you're on 35s you're definitely gonna wanna regear. The OVTune adds some torque/HP and better shifting, but it's not gonna be enough to turn 35s like stock. The tune may help a little but I'd definitely recommend a regear for 35s
Can you please tell me the benefit of doing this vs getting a tuning system added like hp? Does this add hardware? Or do you just go to dealer and they provide the service. Can you reverse this?
This is purely a software tune to your truck's ECU. This is an aftermarket modification so the dealer won't/can't do it, you have to either find someone to do it for you or buy the hardware and software license to do it yourself. Yes it is reversible if you get your ECU flashed by the dealer.
@@KnightWheelsMedia yeah I only am rocking bigger tires (32" KO2s) and a steel front skid plate. My taco is a trd sport with a 6 speed manual. I get around 15 mpg, and that's mostly highway mileage.
Can anyone on here with experience OV tuning give some advice? I’m using Chris Tune packs and I’m up to the point where I’m going to flash my ECU and having some issues.

Yeah no need to drive around on sport all the time. I'd definitely look into getting tuned!
Thanks for your video. I just picked up my new 2022 TRD Sport and was wanting to get the tune, but not void my warranty. Will this void my warranty?
I’m like so blown away. I gotta have this done as well as the TSB. How do I get it done
Check out my last two videos about tuning!!

I have a couple other videos about the tunes too that I'd suggest watching before going to get tuned🤙🏼 also, Toyota doesn't do the tunes they just do an ECU update which you tuner will do as well
I need to find someone around the Texas Panhandle area to do this for our 4Runner it's in need of it.
I'm not sure if there is a tune available for the 4Runner. Last I heard the ECU hasn't been unlocked/figured out yet to where someone can make a tune for it.
I was just thinking this, too bad they don't offer it for the 4.0. The 4.0 in the 4Runner really does suck.
I have the 2022 tacoma trd pro. I have exactly all those problems. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada and wonder if anyone knows where I can get this done.
try a local Tacoma Facebook group!
Anyone know if this would void warranties? I have a 2019 trd offroad and I feel a lot of "drag" and even some rough downshifts when I am braking. Also anyone know someone in south Florida who does tunes?
Check out my second video where I talk a little more about the tune:
ruclips.net/video/wKrK-2aqO_M/видео.html
I also put a map of the tuners in the video description.
Awesome I thinking about getting this done as well
Appreciate it! Definitely worth it if you're experiencing those issues. Might be worth it to first try calling local dealerships and see if they'll do the TSB for free
12mpg… how big are your tires
275/70R17 Falken Wildpeaks. They're a pretty heavy tire too.
What year is your truck and do you know what the tsb calibration it was updated to?
I have a 2019. I'm not 100% sure what the most updated ECU version is. I think I saw someone else post it in the comments maybe
How does the computer act when you use the ECT power button with the tune?
I never really used ECT to begin with, but I'm told it functions the same with the tune as it does without.
question. Are you now Burning through gas faster before the tune?
Gas mileage is better after the tune. I didn't get the tune for performance or increased throttle response, so my driving habits are roughly the same.
Has this tune hlpd ur gas milage?
Yes check out this video where I talk more about the benefits of the tune:
ruclips.net/video/wKrK-2aqO_M/видео.html
How do you find people who install these? I'm a few hours west of Chicago. Thanks!
Tacomaworld or Facebook. Check out my latest video about the tune where I talk about how to find a tuner: ruclips.net/video/wKrK-2aqO_M/видео.html
Definitely ask your dealership about it haha
The shifting & bluetooth connectivity are the only things I had issues with lol
@@KnightWheelsMedia yes I just checked. Going to call and ask about that. Glad I came across this video.
@@marcoallende3683 Dope! Yeah that was the goal for this video haha
I learned about the TSB the day before going to get tuned & I couldn't believe I hadn't heard of it.
If I hadn't already committed to getting the tune I probably would have just called dealerships & got the TSB lol
what year is your tacoma? can this be done on 2021 TRD OFF ROAD?
Mine is a 2019. I believe you can tune a 2021 no problem but I'd suggest asking the tuner just to make sure.
If you are in California after tune did you check to have it smogged? California is getting hard on ecu mods?
I'm in Florida so I don't know, but I've heard you can't tune in California anymore
Does it give you better gas mileage.
I got about 2-3MPG gain for city driving. Highway didn't change much, MAYBE 1-2 MPG if anything. However some people don't see any MPG gain I've heard.
Any idea if tune affects warranty?
As far as warranty, yes it would technically void your warranty I believe. However, I personally think it would be hard to a dealer to prove a) that you had an aftermarket tune and b) that the tune specifically caused whatever issue you are trying to make a warranty claim on (see: Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act)
Take this with a grain of salt as I am no lawyer and can't give legal advice lol
Excellent video, thank you
Glad you liked it!
Meeting up with a random dude from FB....what could possibly go wrong??
Hahaha many things... but thankfully none this day 😂
Problem is we don't know if the TSB is the fix or the tune.
I definitely thought about that.
My suggestion would be to see if you have a dealer willing to do the TSB for free & see if that fixes your issues. I think the TSB mainly calms down the errant shifting & the OVTune is built on top of it to make better shift points and throttle response throughout the power band.
@@KnightWheelsMedia i got the tsb for free, and it make it better, but doesn't correct the issue.
@@shawnpahl4070 Interesting. Thanks for letting me know!
What year is your Tacoma? I’m looking at either a pre owned’22 or a new ‘23, just curious if the new ones need an OV tune. Also if there is a service bulletin out on them. Really liked your video, reassured me.
I had a 19. There was a TSB for the older ones but I believe all 2020+ were "fixed"
Either way, I think the tune does make a difference.
Just picked up a 2021 taco trd sport premium , 3 km on it .... do you think it’s a good idea to tune it now or later when the truck is broken in?
I'd definitely recommend letting the truck break in first at least 1000mi.
But honestly with a 2021 you should have the most upgraded ECU version so you'll probably only want to do a tune if you want some performance gains or notice some dips in the power bands.
Thank you for the advice.... Iam babying her for now and to be honest she glides i dont see any issues what so ever
Love the vids cheers !!
@@KnightWheelsMedia how does someone find out their ecu version? I also have a 2021, just curious if I need the tune at all based on your comment.
@@ericr6282 with a 2021 you most likely have the most updated version. You could ask the dealership about it on your next maintenance visit
@@Mikeartisan I agree. I have a 21’ and it’s butter smooth
Whoever you find to do it I'd just suggest asking all your questions and if they won't take the time to answer them then it's probably better to move on and find someone else lol
Also, I believe there are "certified" OVTune installers so you could look into that as well.
It sound great but will it void the warranty ?
Technically, yes. However it would be hard for anyone to actually tell that your truck is tuned. Check out my other two videos about tuning where I talk about it a little more 🤙🏼
What color is your taco??
Magnetic Gray Metallic
@@KnightWheelsMedia thanks!
I'll probably get this done soon.
It makes a huge difference!
How much was it to tune ?
So it really depends on the guy doing it. Anybody can buy the software licensing, and OBDII cable to do the tune.
The guy who did my tune was on the lower end but typically they'll be around $200-250. I'd say the range overall is anywhere from $150-300. Like I said, mine was on the lowest end of that lol but I agreed not to post the price specifically. Hope that helps!
Sorry if I missed this in the video, but was this the 87 octane tune or 93?
It's the 87 octane tune. Mainly wanted it for the gear hunting/power lag fix rather than performance.
Unfortunately I lost some footage where I was describing the tune in more detail and didn't realize it when editing lol
Any mods for us manual guys? 2020 trd off road
Yes there is a tune for the manual Tacomas as well
Anyone in Tx know where I can get this done on my 2017? My 2006 taco was so much more fun. I have to see if this helps it drive more like my 06
Check for a Texas Tacoma group on Facebook would be my suggestion
Best mod you can do to a Tacoma hands down. Forget all the cosmetic crap. Get it tuned first, or right after you lift it, or get bigger tires. Also get the TRD air filter for it. Thank me later.
You know it! 🤙🏼
How is the tuning after 1 year, I have 2022 auto transmission
It's great! Feels how it should have come from the factory.
@@KnightWheelsMedia so you did just the transmission tuning or engine too ? Can they do just the transmission tuning only
How much it cost you for ov tune flash ?
If you like the OV tune then get the Magnuson supercharger you’ll love it.
I'd love to get one someday haha but the price tag is pretty steeeeep. I'll do it if my channel gets big enough to help pay for it 😂
@@KnightWheelsMedia if I had to do it again I would eat peanut butter and jelly and ramen every day even giving up beer just to get it. Got it for $6200 otd so check those deals. Its not impossible.
@@smookee408 haha okay true I'll at least wait until I make the YT channel part of an LLC so I can write it off as a business expense 😂
Just bought a 2021 Taco Off Road. Do you recommend me to get the OV Tune?
With a new 2021 Tacoma, you should have the latest TSB update for the ECU. So the transmission shift points shouldn't be as bad on your truck. I'd say drive it for a while & if you feel that you're having lack of power, bad shift points, etc. then maybe look into getting it tuned.
Thanks
@@MrJftrease no prob!
Do you know if the tune will effect passing a smog test?
Honestly not sure. I'd suggest checking on TacomaWorld.
Luckily in Florida that's not something I have to worry about haha
Thanks for watching!
I had mine done, I had asked the same question, I was Told it Does Not affect Smog
@@jerryfernandez8881 good to hear!
@@jerryfernandez8881 Thank you Jerry.
Tacomas have a "learning" computer" . Have you found that your truck is going back to the factory settings yet?
I haven't noticed any changes. Still feels tuned where it's shifting smoother/less often.
Are you in the Bay Area of California by chance. ?
Tampa Bay haha
Does it make the truck faster?
Dyno results show a decent increase in HP/TQ, so I think it's safe to say the truck has a bit more get up and go. I don't think it's an insanely noticeable difference, but the power band is definitely better imo.
After getting the tune does the ect pwr button serve any purpose to use? Just curious
I haven't really noticed much of a difference. If anything it just gives it a little more get up & go haha but that could just be in my head
how was the fuel mileage compared to before?
I got around 2-3 MPG gain but not everyone does. Not sure why but I'm not complaining lol
There are no TSB upgrades for 2021 yet your ECU ID should be 04C30

Does this improve mpg in any way?
It helped for me. Averaging a solid 1-2 mpg more.
Which ome u get? 87 93 ??
I did the 87 because I was more concerned about fixing the transmission issues than getting more power
Is it easy to return to stock?
Just wondering for warranty.
Yes it is. If the dealership or someone re-flashes your ECU I believe it would clear the tune.
@@KnightWheelsMedia What would I need get for just some canned tunes? How much would that be
@@Ctrnr1995 not quite sure what you mean by "canned tunes"? But you can buy the software and do it yourself for around $1k or someone else can do it for roughly $200-300
Is this worth doing on a stock ‘21 sr5?
Potentially but you may not notice a huge difference. Being a '21 you should already have the most updated ECU version (the TSB)
I didn't really feel the need for the tune until I got bigger tires, lift, roof rack, bed rack, etc. The weight & drag really makes the transmission struggle with the shift points haha

I just had mine done in Gainesville by a guy out of Jacksonville.
@78prowlerspud I live in Jacksonville, who did you have do the tune for you, I’m looking at getting as well?
@@mbrown1261 I think a guy on Tacomaworld with the handle G8R_Taco does them out of Jacksonville/up north
Any one know if the tsb is avail or offered for the tundra through the dealer?
I'm unaware of any Tundra issues with the shifting. I don't believe there is a TSB for it.
What type of issues are you having?
@@KnightWheelsMedia same issues he’s talking about through this vid. Although I’m twistin 35”s without doing gears yet
@@stevog44 is your truck a 4x4? Could potentially be a needle bearing. With some lifted 4x4 Tacomas the needle bearing goes out & requires an ECGS bushing to remedy.

Disregard the vibration comment lol
But yeah I agree once you're up to 35" tires a re-gear is the main fix
Does this mean you don’t need to regear after slapping some 35’s on your Taco? Does OV tune replaces this?
oh no haha if you're on 35s you're definitely gonna wanna regear.
I'm just glad I'm not the only dude with shitty gas mileage with his Tacoma.
Haha it's a really big issue with anyone who lifts/adds bigger tires. Glad to see the tune helped a bit though!
