I used to be an engine calibrator for an OEM manufacturer. The OEM vs Tuned calibration file might look similar in name (via PN)…but if a dealer really wanted to dig, they would just do a cal compare to the L&G released software for your model year and what’s on your vehicle. If they see variable differences they might ask questions…I’ve never experienced this myself but I’m assuming this would be the process.
only reason for them to look into it would be if something failed, in which case I would reflash to stock. could probably see the flash in the computer history but I doubt they’d check software if the truck doesn’t look too modified. Now if you blow up a second engine/trans they’re definitely going to look into that lol but these engines are extremely well built. It would take a God awful tune and a moron driver to blow up a tacoma powertrain
I love my OTT tune as well. Ive had it for about 4 months now. I recently had my truck supercharged and will be getting the OTT tune for that next week
While I can't speak for crawl control (I honestly just don't use it when I'm off-roading), but with this tune specifically, the ECT button actually increases the throttle response even more! So you kind of get an additional setting. I haven't played around with it too much though, so I'd reach out to your local tuner for more specific information, hope this helps!
I’ve tried multiple tunes (manual transmission) and ultimately decided I prefer stock. I do firmly believe a regear is a great choice even on stock tires. I would personally like to see this channel regear to 5.29s and share the results. It would drive great on 265/70R17s with the auto. I did 5.29s on the manual with both stock size and 255/75R17s and it’s been great. Revs high, performs well.
Just had mine tuned by OTT / Noah in Wisconsin. Couldn’t be happier as it does exactly what was promised. Can’t wait to tow my Intech Sol Horizon in a couple of weeks.

I had Paul install the mild medium OTT tune on my 21 TRD OR a few months ago after driving it stock for the first 30k miles. This is hands down the best $500 I have spent on this truck. Its so much more fun to drive. The off the line throttle response, passing capability and hill climbing power are all seriously improved.
@Dustin421 I don't notice a difference in town driving pretty heavy footed. It seems like I got a little better hwy milage but didn't document it. It is so much more fun that I haven't cared about mpgs yet. Sry.
Great video Chloe on the OTT. You gave an unbiased opinion based on the results of the tune for your truck. I just purchased a 2023 TRD Sport last week and will be getting my trucked tuned in the near future.
Thanks chloe for your time and your down to earth authentic experience , your video and others i found sold me on it so i Just got my 23 tacoma trd 7 k miles done today with OTT hear in alabama . Everything you mention is exactly what my results where withcthe medium spicy with spicy being ECT engaged . I feel ya on the being a little paranoid about costly changes to our gems but thats life for ya , i cant trust my toyota dealer service since i know they lied to me the other day to get my 10k service done at 7k while i had rear axle recall looked at and adking to look into whinning sound coming from possibly rear or trans when letting off acceleration at road speeds . And general driving . After 2 days i eas told its aggressive tires and normal sounds when i know the difference and its obvious its not the tires , so i consider that being bummed off push me out the door , since they rold me that today before went to get tune if i cant trust that response i checked my oil dip stick and my heart sank when i seen easy visually sized metal shavings on the stick from tip to oil level , wiped on paper towel and put back in pull out and even more . I dipped it in on a cold engine atleastc10 times and everytime had shavings of different sizes . I was so over whelmed i started to shed a tear . I checked oil before dropped it off it was just oil now they change it and im getting this on my stick makes me have to believe it was done on purpose , how else can it happen no acceptable excuse . Not sure how to approach but wish me luck i ts destroying my engine everytime i crank i know that much so a 48k financed with service techs lying and putting metal in my engine hear we go , its like a twilight zone of a black hole i just feel threw its so unbelievable but true . Im gonna watch more your videis just to cheer me up czuse thats what its doing for me atm . . Peace and taco love .
Hi, Chloe! I love the honesty and professionalism you always show in your videos. I have to say that this one was very helpful to me and came in the right time. I've been doing the research to qet the best tune for my 2022 TRD Sport and last night I was chating with the local OTT tuner. I was 90% convinced after that, but saw your video early this morning and now I'm 100% sure that OTT is the way to go. Thanks a lot and keep that good work. God bless you always.
I'm glad you did this Chloe. Your video on using additives was a bit underwhelming... as additives don't really do anything other than maybe help keep the engine clean, maybe help with knocking on older engines, and any performance is extremely negligible, and should be seen right away, not after several tanks. Quoc Pham is a good guy, have chatted with him a couple of times, looking forward to working with him when I get my 4th gen.
I did a YotaWerx tune when my '23 had about 500 miles on it. Today, 10K miles later, no regrets. While it did not solve all the gen3 issues, it definitely improved throttle response and reduced but did not eliminate the dreaded gear hunting. MPG did not change, still poor.
Great video. I did this but a bit differently and it DID cost more. I purchased the software and the little orange OBD box so I could program it myself. OrangeVirus Tuning is what I purchased. Now I can program it for the tire size change, for premium fuel, and if I change my gears, I have a tune for that from OrangeVirus and can do it myself. And yes, I agree with all of Chloe's results, and the biggest improvement (for me) was the gear hunting. I LOVE it.
I wish I new about this before purchasing the pedal commander, the commander does what it suppose to do and really happy with it, but it doesn't solve the issue of shifting.
I have a video coming out about this soon. But initial impressions of the Pedal Commander-- I like how while even though the odd stock shifting patterns don't change like they do when you get a tune, the increase in throttle response makes it easier to control because the pedal is more predictable
Good follow up video. My dealership did reccomend the OTT and had business cards on the counter. Have it about 2 months and like it....throttle is touchy and takes getting used too. On cruise control with the radar it searches for gears too much so Brian my OTT guy said use the cruise w/o the radar. Pedal Commander was a no no according to the dealer.
Can you elaborate on why the dealer discouraged a Pedal Commander? It seems far less intrusive than a tune. I've had a Pedal Commander for about a year. It completely changed throttle response (in a very positive way) for my 2021 Off-Road. I love it for both short and long trips.
@@gpclark007 the dealer stated with the PC they had numerous customers coming in with engine codes. I didn't ask what the codes were but other U Tube channel viewers were saying the same thing they were experiencing. If you have the tune and then don't like it you can have the truck recalibrate to stock.
@@scottgorman7166 I see. I've not had any engine code conditions. I would think removing the PC would be easier (anyone can install/de-install one) since it's just sitting between your foot throttle and the original cable. Isn't it just mimicking what your foot COULD do? It's not changing anything on your vehicle. Hey, thanks for the feedback though ... good to know/watch out for.
@gpclark007 when I purchased my tacoma the toyota salesman was the one that introduced me to the pedal commander. As my paperwork was being processed he was showing me online where to purchase the pc.
Nice review. I'd be more curious about the more long term effects of any tune. Of course, not enough time has passed for anyone to report. But I will say, when weighing the more likelihood of issues impacting the reliability of a vehicle, electronic alterations I'd suspect more over mechanical alterations, tune versus re gearing. There are historical results searchable with Jeeps and negative long term results. Then again, we're talking Toyota here. Overall, the answers I'm hearing are the same: Does it accelerate better? A: Yes. Does it tow better? A: Yes. Does it still gear hunt? A: YES. And being a 5.29 re gearee, I can confirm these answers.

And i get 21-22mpg average when babying it

Re: Warranty, as far as I understand automotive warranties don't work like other warranties. For most consumer products they can void the warranty if they see you've modified the product, however for an automotive warranty the onus is on the manufacturer to prove that your modification caused the defect.
Remember the warranty only covers defects. If there are any signs that the engine was pushed beyond normal use or any evidence that the ECM was tampered with they are not under any legal obligation to do warranty work. It would be on the vehicle owner to prove otherwise in a breach of warranty lawsuit.

You make great vids Chloe. Just a word of advice, I don't think you should use the pedal Commander, I've heard from a few friends that it will give you a check engine light. I've been using Sprint booster for quite some time, no problems with it. Just my 2¢. Good luck trying young lady!
Hi Chloe, I'm the daughter of a mechanic. I share your love of Toyota trucks and off-road vehicles? I love women showing their love for fixing things. Just curious, are you a self taught mechanic? I really believe in supporting each other in being courageous in learning new skills. Thank you! Trish
Thanks Trish 😄 I wouldn’t go so far to say I’m anywhere close to being a mechanic haha, but I’ve learned a lot from DIY and spending a lot of time watching/“helping” other people with their own builds. It’s a fun hobby that has a steep learning curve but is very rewarding!
In terms of gear ratios one possible reason to want to change is not just the sort of performance that a tune would help with but also to lower them for more control off road. The Tacoma comes with fairly high gears from the factory and this makes it nice for the road but off road lower gears might help. All the usual caveats about your specific situation still apply.
Personally I would be really worried about tuning my particular truck 2018 TRD off-road 6-ft bed. The reason I would be worried is I get excellent fuel of economy and my transmission does not hunt for gears. I may have an exceptional Tacoma from the factory so I don't want to fool with it. A bad tank of fuel for me is 23 and I often get up to 26 and that's not on the dashboard that's actual miles and gallons calculated. I very typically get 425 to 450 miles on a tank. So I will leave mine alone. Thank you that was interesting to watch 👍
Same, but I wouldn't mind more low-end torque especially in first and second gear. I am however very nervous about this tune affecting longevity. I want 500k miles and 30+ years over better acceleration. With the stick, it is easy to rev it up a bit more and downshift when you need it. Glad to see another MT in here - they are so much more fun to drive everyday!!
Is CARB-compliance any concern? I don't live in CA, nor do I have a Tacoma. It seems *everything* is "taboo" in CA. I am just a curious resident of another state.
Another awesome video!! Thanks I drive with my Tacoma transmission in S and shift when I need.. maybe its not good for it but so far so good.. Health and Happiness to you.
I’ve almost thought about doing that because the lag in power is horrible. I drive mine with the ECT on all the time and feel like I really have to dog the motor out to get any kind of performance
Nice video. If this had existed two years ago, I wouldn't have wasted two years trying to decide if I wanted the tune or not. My tuner is qualified to do Orange virus, kdmax, and ott. I went with ott because when we discussed it, he really wasn't interested in doing any but ott calling it the newest technology. I have a 2018 TRD OR 3.5 liter 4x4 and after owning 6 Toyota trucks and 4 bys previously I was literally hating my 3rd gen. After the tune I'm thrilled! I also agree with pretty much everything you said though my gas mileage went up just over 20% from 14 to 18 if not too much stop and go traffic. Freeway about the same. I think the difference in my case is due to vehicle weight - skids, sliders, winch and bumper, recovery gear, etc. I also have a 2500 plus or minus travel trailer. I did not notice any change in gas mileage when towing, flat or mountainous. Taco mileage just sucks when towing! However the gear hunting is completely gone without the trailer and minimal with it going uphill. So just adding my experience. I also love watching you mechanicing! Now, go hit some trails!
I have offered KDmax and OTT in the past. If you want to have a safe, reliable and proper verified tune on your truck then there is no better option than OTT. Some tune developers don’t even test a tune on the vehicle it is offered for. Thats a big no go for me. With OTT you can rest assured that the people behind it have a deep knowledge about the trucks engine and transmission. They invest in data loggers and analyzing software in order to verify key parameters for a reliable function. Then they take the vehicle onto the dyno for further fine tuning. No short cuts taken.
I think Toyota needs to find out what the tune sweet spot is and do this at the factory. Although I'd hate to see these tuners go out of business, it's really not fair to the customer that Toyota has been getting these complaints for so long all while doing nothing to correct it, all while there's a clear solution out there.
Driving an older Toyota Pickup with a mechanical throttle with a manual transmission daily, you really notice the lag in the throttle response in the Tacoma.
Overall I like you're videos. On this one, I really wished that you had documented the fuel MPG better before and after the tune - that would have been useful.
Which level of spicy did you go with? Love my OTT, i'm in the 3rd tank of gas and absolutely love it. I've ran 91 with stock tires just to see how it runs. Id say the mpg is much better since the rpms are more stable, but not by much. The ECT is like 2 tunes in one at the push of a button... Q is the man! Great review CK!
Chloe, Im seriously thinking about doing this tune also, so thanks for your time making this video. Do you have a list of what settings you ended up using?
I get it’s suppose to come with better tuning from factory, but if you’re not going for a power increase there’s nothing stoping you for using the manual shift in these trucks.
Funny, I don't have the tune yet but I get 18 to 19 MPG in the city but a solid 13.5 MPG on the highway. I actually avoid the highway and take back roads to keep my MPG up. I'll be interested to see if the tune fixes my highway MPG.
Loved the videos about the OTT tune I’m getting a tune today and I’m mainly doing the tune because I got bigger wheels and tires and also for towing my show car. I didn’t see you mention anything about towing do you know if there is any improvements in that aspect?
When tuners start operating out of brick and mortar shops, then I'll probably give it a shot. What recourse does the customer have should the tune somehow screw up their truck, and the tuner is hundreds of miles away? The claim is that there is no record of this happening, but that doesn't mean it hasn't. If it DOES happen, what then? The idea of tuning sounds great, so why aren't any brick and mortar shops doing it? I'm not trying to be negative, but I'm just posing concerns everyone seems to have. While it looks very tempting I'm still reluctant to fiddle around with my 40K truck.

@@nbaldo003 They do check when it comes to warranty repairs, I've seen people get declined for warranty coverage when i worked for Toyota.
I love my OTT tune as well. Ive had it for about 4 months now. I recently had my truck supercharged and will be getting the OTT tune for that next week
What Super Charger did you put on?
I feel like the Tacoma came from the factory on eco-mode. Definitely going to check this out.
How does this affect ECT button and the crawl control ?
While I can't speak for crawl control (I honestly just don't use it when I'm off-roading), but with this tune specifically, the ECT button actually increases the throttle response even more! So you kind of get an additional setting. I haven't played around with it too much though, so I'd reach out to your local tuner for more specific information, hope this helps!
@@ChloeKuo awesome thanks for the info 👍Great content btw!
The ect is more aggressive but smoother while the stock is rough. The stock ect feels like someone who doesnt know how to shift on a manual.
PNW Tuning did mine and it drives great now. No more gear hunting!
Just had mine tuned by OTT / Noah in Wisconsin. Couldn’t be happier as it does exactly what was promised. Can’t wait to tow my Intech Sol Horizon in a couple of weeks.
How did it effect your towing?
Hi Chloe! Thank you for this Video. I had my truck tuned a week ago by Q and wow what a huge difference!! I love driving my truck! Thank you for the video of you getting your tune from Q, it really help me finally do the best thing I’ve done to my truck!
You got the special "Chloe" merch too!
@@quocpham921 I sure did!! 👍🏼 so awesome!
@@quocpham921 thank you!!
Question… do you fill up at empty, at half or less and How many miles is the truck giving you since the OTT when you fill up?
Car lover and dog lover here- Can we get more Cody content too? He is great on camera!
Yep, KD Max tune for me two years ago on a 2016 Tacoma TRD sport 4wd double cab. Makes it drive as it should from the factory.
Getting OTT tune soon but If you use the ECT button, it holds the gears longer without a tune.
I had my 23 TRD OR turned last week. So far, it's a gane changer, a huge improvement.
What about ur mpg? Did it help gas consumption?
Great info on OTT tune chloe this was a good video I love learning more about trucks on your channel keep up the awesome work 💪😎
Meeting w/ Paul today for my 23'TRDOF tune. Pretty excited. Great info. Great Video. Thanks
Thank you for all of the information you give us, it's so helpful!
Getting a tune was great for me. I got a kdmax 10.0 Pick a tune your truck will love it!!!
I LOVE it.
Just listening to you, I have learned more about the Overland Torque Tune than any place else. Thank you! Now I want this over the Pedal Monster!😈
I'm wondering if I should do my tundra ,glad to see your results. Twin Turbos, Lag is an issue I feel, not like raw power.
Cody 🐕 kinda reminds me of Snoopy 😀. I'm glad that the tune worked out well 👍. Thank you for the update! Great video Chloe. ♥️🌮🐶🐾
Check back with your tuner to take the throttle a notch down if you feel it’s too touchy.
I always enjoy your videos…great infos…Aloha from Hawaii..

Got a modified version of the Orange Virus 1.5 93 octane tune w a 3.5” hps cold air intake, 76mm tundra throttle body, and a plenum spacer. Neck and neck w my buddies bolt on Ram 5.7. Took it to the track ran mid 14s w it. Considering precat deletes and e85 next to try and get closer to 13s. still on stock gears. tune is night and day on these trucks. had my truck tuned for almost 100k now NO ISSUES! And i get 21-22mpg average when babying it
Q is awesome, super cool dude and couldn't be happier with the end result.
Just got the OTT tune, and I love it so far, might need to get used to it for a little bit first but everything‘s been pretty smooth
Awesome video! I got my OTT tune because of you LOL
Thank you for your video. I was totally stressed about getting this done today. Your input and details gave me the confidence to get it done and it is a big difference with the overall performance. Shifting was my main complaint but the power is great 👍
🙏
I love my Peddle Commander. It is one of my first and favorite mods. Super easy install. No changes, for me, in MPG. Win win in mu book. Ymmv. Cheers.
Good info & thanks for the 📽️ I'ma get the OTT soon on my '22 TRD off-road 6-speed manual. The truck needs to be tuned to help drive better imo, i can't wait!
Very cool...am totally looking at getting the OTT on my truck now. Thanks
I MET HIM LAST NIGHT HE TUNED MY 2005 4RUNNER V8 4WD AND I SHOWED HIM YOUR VIDEO
Helpful video. Did you notice any changes in the gas mileage at all?
Re: Warranty, as far as I understand automotive warranties don't work like other warranties. For most consumer products they can void the warranty if they see you've modified the product, however for an automotive warranty the onus is on the manufacturer to prove that your modification caused the defect.
Remember the warranty only covers defects. If there are any signs that the engine was pushed beyond normal use or any evidence that the ECM was tampered with they are not under any legal obligation to do warranty work. It would be on the vehicle owner to prove otherwise in a breach of warranty lawsuit.
Chloe, thanks for the great video! Do you know if the OTT tune affects the longevity of the trucks transmission and engine?
I have a 6inch lift on my 3rd gen, also have 20’s wrapped around in 35’s Toyo’s at, have a trip to Colorado to visit family, and then to Texas. Don’t care about mpg, but will probably get one done to see if it’ll help with mpg for the travel, but also with the mountains.
Did you regear it?
Very good information and greatly appreciated the map link for a tuner. Only found one in Raleigh,NC. Better than none for sure. Thanks !
When will you release the Pedal Commander vs the OTT tune Video? I am debating this currently
It’s a fun hobby that has a steep learning curve but is very rewarding!
cant wait to get my 4 runner tuned on the 21 cant wait to see how it runs
In terms of gear ratios one possible reason to want to change is not just the sort of performance that a tune would help with but also to lower them for more control off road. The Tacoma comes with fairly high gears from the factory and this makes it nice for the road but off road lower gears might help. All the usual caveats about your specific situation still apply.
I'll be honest around town it was alright but on any interstate I absolutely hated my Tacoma. Had OTT for a year now and it's worth every penny.
What engine is your truck the 4 cylinder?
@@edgarmadrid2343 The 3.5 V6
450 miles per tank you must allways drive down hill to get that ha?
@@jandelahoussaye9834 No It just gets great fuel economy. A bad tank for me is 23
I've found my 6-speed manual transmission is very predictable on my 2014 tacoma V6 trd off-road 4x4. :)
I also had that one minute of severe anxiety when flashing my truck with a tune 😂
I think it sucks that we need to modify the ECU to make the car better to drive, Toyota should do a recall and install OTT in all Tacomas in the world
Another awesome video!! Thanks
I drive with my Tacoma transmission in S and shift when I need.. maybe its not good for it but so far so good..
Health and Happiness to you.
I’ve almost thought about doing that because the lag in power is horrible. I drive mine with the ECT on all the time and feel like I really have to dog the motor out to get any kind of performance
Thanks for your video. i recently bought a 22 Tacoma TRD Sport. Been watching your video and learned alot from you.
You're the greatest. Keep on trucking!
Great video. Thanks for the information. Can I ask what size lift you are running on your Taco?
1.5” lift all aroubd!
Thanks for the Review. You answered a lot of my questions.
One question :how much did this process cost? Loved your review. Thanks.
I believe the price may vary depending on the location, but in Texas, I purchased mine for $400!
They went up. It’s $450 now
$400-$500 is pretty standard from what I hear
All stock tacos should get 4.88’s and a tune
What seat covers do you have chloe?.. they look great!
Awesome vid thanks for the follow up! I see you put in 87. Any other 94 lovers out there or am I just throwin money away 😂
Chloe, Im seriously thinking about doing this tune also, so thanks for your time making this video. Do you have a list of what settings you ended up using?
Thank you Chloe for this excellent video review. Hello from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷

Love your content, keep up the good work!
Great video! Thank you. I have a question kinda off topic. How many miles do you pit on your KO2’s before you replace them?
Loved the videos about the OTT tune I’m getting a tune today and I’m mainly doing the tune because I got bigger wheels and tires and also for towing my show car. I didn’t see you mention anything about towing do you know if there is any improvements in that aspect?
Girl i just love that you go hard wit it big ole ass fan. Literally.😂😂😂😂
Hmmmm, looking forward to the Pedal Commander comparison. Whenever I watch your content I end up spending money... : )
Great video Chloe!
Great video Chole. Very informative. I know price will probably very depending on location. What does something like this run?
Best to reach out to the closest tuner. The map is linked in her comments.
Most tuners in the states will charge $400-500 but it can vary
When tuners start operating out of brick and mortar shops, then I'll probably give it a shot. What recourse does the customer have should the tune somehow screw up their truck, and the tuner is hundreds of miles away? The claim is that there is no record of this happening, but that doesn't mean it hasn't. If it DOES happen, what then? The idea of tuning sounds great, so why aren't any brick and mortar shops doing it? I'm not trying to be negative, but I'm just posing concerns everyone seems to have. While it looks very tempting I'm still reluctant to fiddle around with my 40K truck.
