Pat convincing all of his world class musician friends to play these songs from my childhood and making them sound like they were standards gives me life
The Consouls (who have collaborated with Pat) are also very good at it but get less exposure, being in the Southern Hemisphere. Having said that, Pat's playing is in the stratosphere!
@@cooldebtand also Pats group "J-Music Ensemble" have loads of top notch jazz covers of video game music and other J pop adjacent stuff :).
In a way they are standards now that we are seeing a renaissance in how people view Video Game music and how it’s treated in the greater jazz scene
@@ArseneLupinVIIIbeautiful music that everyone in our generation can relate to and appreciate! perfect for turning into jazz
Patrick Bartley and Mario Galaxy. What universe am I living in dude
Bartley does a lot of video game music. It's the others I'm surprised about
You should check out his J-Music Ensemble. He has a good youtube channel and a twitch.
You might like to check out the cover of Marvel vs Capcom 2 Swamp Theme Pat did in collaboration with other VGM cover notables. Funky fun.
Gosh it’s incredibly refreshing to hear a jazz video game cover that doesn’t sound like an artificial jazz video game cover. Like the respect to the music, and the jazz culture is paramount. Kind of gives me vibes of someday my prince will come, probably because it’s also in 3/4. Absolutely amazing work!
Edit: lol it literally says in the description that it’s inspired by “someday my prince will come” which is probably my favorite standard.
Nice catch on the SMPWC connection. 8-bit music theory did a whole ep. on this tune and how it is somewhat 'Disney-like'. Glad that we are reaching a point where our young jazz stars today are doing with VGM what the stars of the past did with Disney and other pop tunes.
in the description of this video it's mentioned that it's inspired by someday my prince will come! good catch
oh.........welp that makes sense lol

I feel like even people who like videogame music are tempted to treat it as sort of a second class separate thing compared to non videogame music. However, good music is good music, and this cover proves just how amazing it can be it you give it all the respect it deserves.
@@ProfesserLuigi thank you! I highly agree with this sentiment!!!
Wow! I never thought I'd ever hear you guys play this. Mario Galaxy is of my very favorite games of all time!
Actually this is not too surprising considering Patrick Bartley
Possible best living saxophonist.
If anyone is curious where Patrick may have lovingly borrowed this idea from check out our big band arrangement of this, much love to Patrick one of the best to ever do it and champion of VGM Jazz!! - ruclips.net/video/dKtwUwQ4EXQ/видео.html
I love smaller ensemble jazz (eg. The Consouls) but I always appreciate your amazing arrangements! Belated Congrats on the Grammy!
Ok thanks Charlie Rosen
Love you, love carlos, love dom palombi(p.s. WHEN ARE YOU FEATURING HIM DO IT SOON), love pat bartley, love the consouls! VGM jazz is where its at!
these solos are INSANE
I love that my two favorite living jazz musicians have collaborated together!
I'm doubly happy because Pat has played with Emmet AND The Consouls 😀
SO GOOD I LOVE JAZZ AND MUSIC AND LIFE
❤
I think Patrick Bartley could make a killer smooth jazz album
You guys are great. Thanks for keeping jazz alive. It will never grow old
Also The Consouls bringing jazz to younger audiences via 100s of vgm jazz covers (I found Pat some time ago via vgm)
Love Giveton's playing on this one
Danke für eure wundervolle Musik mit schönen Bildern in dieser schwieriegen Zeit! Thank you for your wonderful music with beautiful pictures in this difficult time... Best wishes from Germany...Peter
Unglaublich schön, oder?
My gosh i LOVE this song!!! Please more game/anime music mit Patrick this is the best combination!!!!! Love your work on bringing all these amazing musicians together Emmet!!!
Sweet and lyrical!❤️
Holy shells…. 💯
Had no idea this came from a video game I thought it was some old jazz tune. Absolutely some of the best jazz music I've ever heard 🎶
Amazing playing!
great performance! of course it's inspired from miles davis' someday my prince will come. 8-bit music theory did a video comparing rosalina in the observatory to a buncha disney princess "i want" songs (including someday my prince will come) and classical pieces from the romantic period. these pieces have amazing similarities that allow musicians to adapt them in similar ways, just like we saw here. great job, guys, and may the stars shine down on you. ;))
AMAZING THANK YOU
someday my prince will come to the observatory 😪🤙
Exactly haha
I love this song, this game, I love this melody, I love music, but the way they just played it transcends all of that. God bless the five of you beautiful people and everyone else who contributed. Logos rising 💙
Amazing Playing!!
Absolutely killer
Beautiful 🎷🎹🥁🎺🥰🥰🥰
and SUPER MARIO😂😂😂
Flipping legend!
Isso foi tão perfeito que quase chorei.
Can't believe they convinced a pimp named slickback to join them on the upright... Good shit
This is so amazing. Made my day
Just awesome
Tremendous!
Absolutely filthy piano solo (though actually clean as hell). I love this new establishment of VGM "standards" in the musical world.
5:30 the run (note to self for transcribing purposes)
Got this on auto play and heard the intro before seeing the title... went 'huh?'
LOL. As a fan of The Consouls, I wasn't that surprised to hear this tune by a jazz ensemble. I shouldn't have been surprised to hear EC3 play some VGM with Pat on board though!
2:30 4:49 Noice
now this is smoothhh
fucking insane man
no way
Noticed the similarities to la fiesta lol
2:20
Why is a pimp named slickback in this video?
I love how Patrick Bartley, one of the best living sax players today, pulled up to the gig and was like “I’m playing Super Mario Galaxy today or I’m not playing.”
What an absolute legend. Keep doing god’s work man.
So, God's work is playing jazz versions of vgm?

I would love to hear this group cover more music from games! Patrick's arrangements bring a world of depth and perspective.
Check out Pats group "J-Music Ensemble" they have some truly great tracks, mostly based on video game music (but also other Japanese music too!). Their Persona covers, and the entire Brooklyn Sakura festival 2019 set they played are some of their standouts!
I can't believe I'm listening to such a good interpretation for free
You aren't, you literally paid lol

I love how Emmett goes really wide at 2:29, with Wynton Kelly's groove on Someday. It gives the solo great contrast and ties it back to its inspiration. I feel like jazz standards change with the times, and this performance shows how well the Nintendo catalogue could contribute to a new generation of standards.
Emmit's playing on this is incredible. The whole band sounds fantastic and the arrangement is 💯
You're everywhere
Just beat that game! I immediately thought “wow, this is a great tune” when I was playing. Glad it got the attention it deserves.
Its been forever since I've played through it, if memory serves the tune gets introduced one instrument at a time as you power up the observatory right? Or something like that?
@@Cowboybebub yah I think you’re right!

Patrick you awesome nerd haha
Just woke up and saw Emmet Cohen and Patrick Bartley playing SMG music, instant highlight of my week!
Can I also recommend The Consouls who do a great jazz cover of this tune too!
never thought youd venture into vgm, and especially love it!! ❤️❤️
Pat’s passion!
Holy shit I love this, I wouldve never expected VGM covers here but I'm so happy, amazing job everyone :)
How'd I know you'd be here before me
You might also like to check out The Consouls who have nearly 400 VGM jazz covers in their repertoire including this tune
Great playing! Love the quotes of Coltrane's solo from Emmet and Patrick. Giveton has a lovely tone
The disassembly and synthesis of the theme while preserving the feeling of the tune is just amazing. Def one of my favourites.
I need the charts for this! its so good
It's like Miles Davis, John Costa, and Father Christmas all got together, played some Mario Galaxy and in a moment of serendipity each saying to one another "Hey, let's jam to that", then inscribed the result of that jam session across the stars. This is phenomenal; a perfect chemistry. The veritable onion of layers offered up here make this worth listening to over and over knowing full well you'll find something new each time you listen.
this is profound
Very high level sax player. Really enjoyed this performance. Super good. Melodie’s werent boring jazz stuff and had enough contemporary licks to keep me interested. That sax player is outstanding. Nice sound on the trumpet. Piano had some really nice licks. Everybody played well. Bass player hit a lick with the trumpet player that was great. Well done everybody. High level stuff
Love Emmet doing the coin sound at the end lol
Came for the cover, stayed for the INCREDIBLE jazz performance
What I love about these performances is 99% of them seem purely improvised. No cheesy clichés in the solo except for the odd quote here and there.
Beautiful cover. Love me some jazzy VGM - it’s such a wonderful musical niche introduced to me by my kids - but I take credit for discovering The Consouls and J-Music Ensemble to introduce back to my boys ;)
Heck ya! My other two fav jazzy VGM cover groups are 8 Bit Big Band, and the solo act, Insaneintheeainmusic. Carlos from Insane has been at it all through music school so his arrangements only get richer the longer he's been at it :). His "Ghost Trick" theme is one of my fav instrumental prices, and I don't even know the game! :)
@@robsonclark9678 BTW Carlos is back!
@@cooldebt ya, just saw his announce vid yesterday hah. Whatever he does I hope he feels good personally doing it. I was kinda looking forward to adding him to my list of indie composers to look for and likely buy games just to hear what he was cooking up (Lena Raine and Austin Wintory are there ATM!) But more free jams on RUclips is never bad :)!!
Playing music from Mario galaxy!?!? True men of culture
I’m so glad you had Patrick Bartley on this!! Absolutely killer, wonderful job everyone❤️
Description says Patrick arranged it
Also lovely is The Consouls cover from 2018
Jazz VGM yesssssssss
One of my favorites to do is The Lake Theme from Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
If you also like Jubilife City, The Consouls have covered that tune in Consouls Radio #18 last December
Patrick barley plays with such soul and emotion! what a musician.
Another insane solo from Patrik Cannonball Bartley. Tssssssssssssssss
Where can I buy this arrangement? I love it so much and would love to support Bartley’s arrangement.
Even after the tune ends it's still fire 🔥
Insane musicianship!!
i remembered when my brother got us a copy of super mario galaxy 2, we would always play it when we had the chance, and after all these years, hes still the stupid guy i know that kept killing us on hightail falls
Patrick is an absolute legend!
Don't lay that "legend" crapola or even worse the "genius" kiss of death on a young player. Legends and geni belong in past tense....or bottled as spirits...This stuff here in The Observatory is con sabor and P-R-E-S-E-N-T-E!

No wayy, this tune???
Total delight!
Patrick Bartley bringing VGM into the jam. Love it!
Hopefully, more 'mainstream' performers taking up VGM will help spotlight gourps like The Consouls who solely do VGM jazz covers (and brilliantly too with nearly 400 tunes in their stylistically wide-ranging repertoire)
This episode of Emmet's Place is one of the best so far.
it is funny the way the drummer look at the ceiling
These guys LOVE La Fiesta by Chick Corea
These are the only musicians I wanna hear on live at emmet’s. 🐐s. All of em.
Yeah bro ion wanna hear no other musicians on emmet than kyle russel and 🐐 bart
Giveton my hometown boy keep swinging bro
One of my favorites of Patrick's!
Anyone here the La Fiesta quote at 4:49?

Beautiful.
High 5 to everyone.
funny i was thinking about dave dig disney and about the wonderful broadway themes (roger and hammerstein and so on) that were turned into wonderful jazz standards ... but i could not really point it, but yes Miles too played Someday My prince , one y miles favorite record, oh yes purists consider it has commercial i don't care. Laura (Erroll Garner, earlt Brubeck) , Walz for debby, (mainly Bill evans) Greensleeves (Coltrane on afro brass or Desmond and the MJQ) and other pop tunes have always been among my favorite. In that concert they opened with Walz for debby but without the wonderful brass mini section.
Love that you feature videogame music because there are some truly awesome pieces of music in videogames
Agree. Pat/J-Music, The Consouls and others really draw attention to how good the OG compositions actually are with their jazz covers.
Sorry Emmet. What left hand chord you play in second 24-25? (Im starting play jazz)
sounds like an F#7(#5) - that would be F#, A#, C double sharp (D natural), and E

Emet collecting coins at the end XD
You'd probably enjoy The Consouls cover of Frappe Snowland from their (Christmas 2020) Radio #9.
This deserves way more views and likes! I would 100% go see these guys live. I love stuff like this.
Great, chords looks like my prince will come ?
Wonderful as always!
hall of the mountain king quote at 1:45 ??
Rosalina in the Observatory but every time Emmet sneakily quotes the Mario Coin sound effect, take a shot.
so you mean only the part at the end?
0:46 also
I also hear it a little bit at 1:52
Wow!! these guys are the real deal....
Absolutely amazing!! I would love to buy this arrangement, is there anywhere I could buy it??
I’m playing at a local farmer’s market very soon and this arrangement would be right at the top of the list to play it with my band!
Not too different from Waltz for Debby :)
Debby in the Observatory!
Reminds me specifially of Johnny Costa during parts of that piano solo. Just gave me that "good neighbor" vibe.
Love it! Put some more together and make it a record! 😊
