She took what she wanted and lived on her own terms. She wanted Daemon? Done. She wanted Vhagar? Done. Even went out on her own terms. Laena was a great character even though she had a minor role.

I’m still mad we didn’t get more of Laena. Her friendship with Rhaenyra was one of Rhaenyra’s most important relationships, and they gave us nothing.

Now she just looks like a dumbass for allowing so much bloodshed to happen. It's the worst scene of the show and it was entirely unnecessary.
@@JimmySteller Kinslaying is one of the worst sins you can commit in westeros - she would have never killed her blood relatives unless it's a last resort. Besides, the war hadn't actually started and neither Corlys nor her had decided which side to support.

Not to mention how many smallfolk died just for being there, when the actual perpetrators are spared? And nobody thinks to try and shoot Rhaenys when she’s just sitting there glaring dramatically? But also, come on, kinslaying or no, she’d still be able to deter a huge war by ending it right then and there. Every important member of Team Green was right there and their cause would never have recovered.
I love that marrying Damon never backfired on her. It wasn't like Cersei's marriage to Robert or Sansa's want for Joffrey, which both fizzled out once the women saw their' true colors. She knew Daemon loved someone else but it didn't stop him from appreciating her and treating her with respect.
If that was true then he wouldn't have laughed at her funeral, and fucked and married his neice right after her funeral - which was only a few days later. He didn't respect her at all, Laena was just a placeholder to him. He may not have beat her like Robert did to Cersei, but he was still a horrible husband.

And as far as marrying R, Laena always knew he loved her and was moving on. The book also shows how imperfect their marriage is to the point where he strays, so despite being a "placeholder", Laena got the BEST version of him.

Well said. I think this is possibly the best marriage in HOTD, especially considering what happens with their two daughters. (If you disagree about Laena and Daemon clearly supporting each other then you haven't seen the deleted scene where he comforts his girls, and you haven't heard about what they go on to be. Daemon was only ever loyal to Viserys, Rhaenyra, Laena, and his children, adopted or otherwise. Not to the Iron Throne, or a sense of duty, or the King. just the people he loves).
Laena was literally that girl!! She deserved more and way more time screen time. We saw her ride Vhagar literally once!
Fun Fact for Non Book Readers: Daemon allegedly fell in love with Laena the second he saw her. However, she was already betrothed to a sea lord from Braavos. Daemon insulted the Sea lord and the Sea lord challenged him to a duel which Daemon easily won, killing him. They married shortly afterwards without the King’s blessing and ran off to Pentos
Wish they kept this Leana and Leanor. The actors had an edge about them that really captured the essence of the characters and they both were gorgeous to look at.
I thought I was the only one who preferred this version of Laena and Laenor but I understand about Laenor cause he didn’t look like someone who’s wife has 3 kids now.

This is 100% a “oh we kind of forgot” moment. Because in the book Laena is 5 years older than Rhaenrya. She is the oldest child of Corlys and Rhaenys. Laenor is 3 years older than Rhaenrya.

@@Yuvaldyn I think they maybe wanted to avoid making Viserys' and Rhaenys' claims to the thrones more complicated and more clear that it should go to Viserys since he was the male choice. Because if Laenor was already alive (since Aemma was pregnant during the council), it would be quite obvious that it would go through Rhaenys to Laenor.
Yeah. I don't know why they changed Laena's age. She is older than Rhaenyra in the book. I guess it was meant to give a plausible reason as to why Viserys didn't pick Laena. If she was of age, it would truly have been an insult to house Velaryon.

No they really shouldn't have. So far everything we have seen in HOTD has been nothing but a couple paragraphs in Fire and Blood. They've had to embellish a lot and so far it's been great and often better than the books version of events. But still, the meat of this story is the Dance itself. And it's gonna be 4 seasons.
I wouldn't have minded that either. Most characters who died in this season died before we barely got to know them. Viserys' was the only death that really felt emotional. This wouldn't have been the case if we had more than a couple of scenes to get invested into different characters before they start dropping like flies.

They were super close in the books, and Rhaenyra visited them all the time in Pentos and was trying to get there in time with a maester who could save her when her labor went sideways.

I like the character of Laena. She lived her life entirely by her own terms, right up until the end. She was also the only partner that Daemon had that he loved and respected enough not to cheat or leave.

Much as I like the first season of this show (and look forward to the next), I wish they'd taken their time a bit more. I get that it was a gamble on their part to try and get through the backstory in one season, but I think they could have spent a bit longer on it. We could have had two seasons of buildup instead of just one, which means more time for such characters as Laena Velaryon. They could have dealt with her Braavosi suitor the way it appears in the book, for example, and given us more scenes with her and Laenor, Daemon, Rhaenyra, etc.
Same. I wish they would have taken their time and introduced us to the setting and the characters at a more natural pace. Rather than rushing through it as they did. Still, I look forward to season 2. Just hope they don't ruin it (like make Daemon bi) or add more foot fetish scenes or window wanking. Some things you just can't unsee.

Man Laena in episode 5 is my most favourite Laena. She was feisty and loving at the same time and also pretty. Tbh I loved her and her dress more than Rhaenyra in this scene even though it’s Rhaenyra’s engagement party 😂 Daemon on the other hand keeping Laena as plan b if Rhaenyra doesn’t work, he really likes to collect nieces💀 while I didn’t like how they changed Laena’s age and Valerian’s skin colour but I must say they did a fine job with the casting.

@@bfeditingchannel1410 I’m not against diversity dear. Mostly I’m fine with diversity, it’s just that I had a different vision for the Valerian family knowing about the Valerian lore. Most fans thought that the Valerians were pale white skinned like the Targaryens. It’s still an interesting change though. Like I said I love the casting and it’s grown on me.

What do you mean 'starting to think'? I'd say it's pretty clear in the show (and even more clear in the books) that Daemon considers Valyrian blood to be far, FAR superior to any other. He pretty much only considers Valyrians to be proper humans, everyone is kinda a 'meh, who cares' to him. And yes, Mysaria is also Valyrian since she's from Lys (which is a Valyrian colony) and has the typical Valyrian traits (white hair, purple-ish eyes).
I mean it’s normal for house Targaryen and honestly nowhere near as bad as brother and sister even in house Targaryen even before it was made law they could marry their children together the faith would’ve accepted uncle and niece easier then brother and sister back then. I mean it’s also to keep their magical blood pure to the best of their abilities daemon has a type.

Meh... the show and books don't expand on her character so I don't understand the gushing over her other than she's a black woman. They gave her a more or less hollow role- she rode Vhagar, that's cool, but then she didn't survive until the Dance of the Dragons, and she didn't participate in battles. Even though in the show and books she's described as fiery, we didn't get to see enough of it and her death in the show is inaccurate to the book ( I prefer the book's death more). They didn't show her friendship with Rhaenyra and instead focused on Alicent, even though Alicent was supposed to be 10 years older and Laena was supposed to be Rhaenyra's best friend.
House Velaryon has many powerful members- her daughter Baela will be a much more interesting character, but Laena herself? Just meh. But I wouldn't say that Baela was a badass because of her mother, especially since in the books she died when the twins were only 3, so I doubt they would remember their mother much, if at all. My hot take- her twins are way cooler, Laena had potential but it was never reacted upon.

@@289rory Cheers to that- at least she's not like most noble women. Although we don't get much dialogue from her either, which is a shame. I don't remember her saying anything in the book, and in the series we only get about 4 very short scenes with her- if they built Rhaenyra's friendship with her and showed Daemon, Rhaenyra, and Laena riding their dragons together that would've made me more attached, but they didn't.
She is also far from the only strong woman in the Westeros universe- we have Rhaenyra, Brienne, Cersei, Visenya, Queen Alysanne (these are all going by the books so far, I highly recommend reading them), and Mysaria is also going to be very important.
And sadly, was killed by childbirth.

Laena is about 12 when we first meet her and Rhaenyra is 15 when we first meet her. I guess as someone said, to make this scene less creepy. Laenor was also played by 3 different actors too, as well as Alicent’s Aegon now that I think about it.
