One thing I like about the xbox controller is how long the AA batteries last. In my case I think it lasts something around 20 hours of usage (it depends on the battery brand). I have 2 pairs of those duracell rechargeable packs and I always keep one pack ready while I'm using the other. And thats wild when I compare to my Dualsenses which I have to charge all the time. I'm ok with microsoft using rechargeable batteries inside the new controllers but i'm afraid the battery life will be similar to Dualsense. Let's see
The only feature I want which I've wanted since the last gen consoles came out. Is the ability to use your own Bluetooth headphones instead of having to go out and buy gaming headphones that are almost the price of the consoles🤦🏾♂️
I actually like the AA version of the controller because I use rechargeable batteries. Glad this new one seems to be swappable battery but unfortunately it will probably incompatible with rechargeable AA batteries.
I've got an aftermarket rechargeable batterie replacement for the AA unit. So microsoft could come up with a solutions that would support both, since it's already existing.
I wouldn't be surprised if the "swappable" batttery uses a proprietary connector and will only work with Officially Xbox Licensed Batteries similar to the SSD Add-Ons you can get for the current Series X.
Digital only is horrible. Not only is it (way) more expensive for the gamer, because you can’t buy games second hand or on discount, but it’s also very poor for lots of gamers with poor internet connections. For those it takes days to download huge games.
I’m one of those people with terrible internet (I’d be lucky to see 1mb/s, most of the time it’s hovering around 500-750kb/s) and I can’t remember the last time I bought a disc. Sure I can save $10 by going to the store but first I’d need to put on pants and drive there, and deal with people, risk them not even having it in stock, and then get the game which has a broken case and scratched disc, bring it home and need to download a 5gb update anyway which I’d need to let sit for the next day or two anyway

This will definitely make the OG series x become highly sought after for disc buyers, since the refresh series x will not have a disc drive. We all knew it was evenutally coming to this. Games now of days are going beyond 4k blu ray disc capacity. Sony has no plans on making an 8k blu ray drive. Not to mention, sonys upcoming refresh, ps5 slim will no longer come with a disc drive built in and you will have to buy the disc drive separately. So, even sony is starting to head into an all digital direction now as well.
PC gaming has been all digital for decades now. It's not as big of a deal as people make it out to be imo. And that's as someone who still buys disks from time to time. I know eventually it's not gonna be the case anymore. It's a shame. At least with Xbox I'll have access to my games everywhere though.
Final Fantasy VII had four disks on PS1 and it was not a problem. Capacity of a Blu-Ray is not the issue here. It is all about locking you in to their ecosystems. For a casual gamer this hardly matters but for a dedicated gamer or hobbyist it is a troublesome progression.
Games don't run off the disc... not since the xbox one x at least. They install from the disc onto your drive. The disc is ONLY there as a license key to play the game
All my games are physical discs. I love having all my games to collect. With that said i guess i wont be getting this “revised” version. Probably wouldn’t have anyway since there isn’t any actual hardware differences. Hopefully they come out with a more powerful version that has a disc drive sometime in the future.
They are literally switching to all digital that is the master plan. Its to maximize profits and to take away your possessions. You will own nothing and you will be happy I guess.
Most of the discs simply house the license now. I installed Call of Duty from the disc and 90% of the install is still on the internal SSD. However, 2TB needs to be the starting standard moving forward.
dude most games don't even release in a perfect state day one. they need some patches to make them playable. Why would you want a non playable games in a disc. Its not just console companies, its game developers too.
Later large storage is not a thing..cloud gaming is the future..for storage probably will be used just to install apps to start the game..and the rest of the data is by cloud..
I really hope the new Xbox has at least an option to purchase a disc drive separately like the rumoured PS5 Slim. I buy many more digital games now than before, but I still really appreciate having the option for both.
I hope you are wrong about the no disk drive thing, the only reason I even bought an X-box was for the backwards compatibility, if they take that out I'm done.

Agreed, was also shocked they didn't go this route. OR maybe they are saving those for the Elite or "Luxury" controllers to have those in? But at least they are planning on having them replaceable in case you do get stick drift.
They should not leave out the disc drive, many people have it set up in their living room or common areas, it is also used to play movies and like you said older games. Many people still like the hard copy
it says right on the document you show that the battery is going to be swappable, which means NOT built in. Since you can already swap out rechargable battery packs OR AA batteries currently, This doesn't sound like an upgrade.
Microsoft: “We are going to put the maximum amount of effort into optimizing old games for backwards compatibility” Also Microsoft: “you can’t use the discs from our old, disc only console”
Also killing off the 360 store. Microsoft has the most amount of resources to keep old media alive, yet doesn't seem to give a flying fuck about it. Hypocrites.
Microsoft has been lying from the start, they never cared about backwards compatibility. They don't care about you, they care about forcing an all digital future because it strips you of all control.
Anything they published is on gamepass and they will likely pass the blame to the publishers who did upgrade their games for backwards capability on disc for not putting them on GP. Or as said they might offer a separate drive addon.
How did so many people miss the "swappable" call out? Also I don't see a world where they don't offer an external disc drive. That would top the handling of the XBoxOne launch as worse decisions ever made. How do retailers mass sell a digital game? Are there that many people in the world that go to Best Buy to buy a digital copy of a game they could just start downloading while sitting on their couch?
They COULD work with game companies to offer copies with more bonuses or something, but I think that the game companies want to remove the middle man between them and your cash! You'd have to go THEIR store, not Walmart or whatever. And they can charge what ever they want for them!🫤
They have a patent for an external disc drive already so they are working on one however many years it will be until that is a thing we can actually buy.
GameStop is literally going to take a massive Blockbuster sized L when Sony and Microsoft go all digital. The gaming industry is way past its peak and now its just going to get worse until we find a new means of entertainment.
That next controller has "direct to cloud" which is pretty interesting, how that works without a dongle I'm struggling to visualize. Imagine if the controller has internet connectivity and wireless video capabilities? Wow.
I never understood why the double A batteries are hated. Microsoft gives you the option to use rechargeable double A using any mAh, I am not an avid user but my batteries take weeks to drain.
Boring look. Feels cheaply made. The whole design now of the Xbox Series X is meh. You release they haven’t changed much of the Xbox controller since the original. I don’t know what you’re talking about.
The best thing about the battery pack I'd the ability to hard reset the controller. My original elite controller is a pain in the ass when it won't pair.
I think I would be a big mistake if no disc drive was not on the new xbox as I like a disc drive because once I completed a game like armored core 6 I can go to a shop and trade it in to make a new game cheaper you can't do that to a no disc drive not unless a new game from the xbox store is cheaper then a disc version as you don't need the disc or box it comes in.
Can't say I'm sad to see the AA batteries go. But it still had an upside, as in easy to replace. As way to many I know did see their PS3/4 controller as E-waste and tossed it away when it went bad vs trying to replace the battery.
I remember a while back I think phill Spencer mentioned how they want to get your owned games part of either gamepass or the cloud (not to sure which). Maybe this could be the solution for the disc less redesign
There was a patent for being able to verify ownership of physical discs and convert it to digital for the digital only console. There's a couple problems with it though. Someone could buy a physical game, verify it, and then return the game while still keeping digital ownership. Also because it's digital, you don't actually own it anymore, so it would still be worth keeping the physical copy. (imagine converting your games to digital, your account gets banned or hacked for some reason, and then your physical disc is unusable because it's already linked to an account you can no longer access).
Honestly if they go fully digital then they will have no choice to make digital games cheaper or I think Nintendo will take advantage of this and still use cartridges and become even bigger than it already is, and if Sony and Microsoft become full digital and don't reduce the cost of digital games then I think people will start to leave or jump to pc with game pass and just get games cheaper but I believe if they go fully digital only then both companies will struggle if not fail all together

Austin is happy about them going to a rechargeable non-replaceable battery... meanwhile, the EU is trying to reverse that move in the cell phone market. I don't understand the hatred for rechargeable AA batteries and battery packs that can easily be swapped at any time.
New controller looks great. Not a fan of the removal of the disc drive as I have quite a few older games I play the disc for on my series X. But I think it will be a great upgrade for all the cloud/gamepass players on series S. I’m not either of those but, Nice.
I agree, I’m not a fan of the loss of the disc drive. I still buy disc games over digital, and while I understand the push for all digital there’s still ownership issues and game preservation issues I have with it that keep me buying physical copies. The update to the controller sounds great to me, especially with the rechargeable/replaceable battery aspect.

I’m really happy with the backwards compatibility on it, and long as it keeps running I’m good with it as is. Sometimes I pick up a new game for it, but usually in store and on sale, since nothing Xbox has put out game-wise has really made me to, “I have to get this and play it day 1!” The size is definitely better then my PS5 for sure and I know some people actually set it up as an emulator, so it definitely has a ton of uses and fans. Long as they’re happy with their console of choice, that’s all that matters.
I like the new design (i like the current one as well) but it is a big risk going all digital unless they plan to reduce the price of the games!? I doubt it would happen though. Not sure why anyone would think there would be a Pro verison this gen. There was only one last gen as the PS4 and Xbox One especially were so underpowered.
The controller looks kinda cool but Im more than a little disappointed to see the disc drive go entirely. 10:30 I believe this concept has been used since Crackdown, with Microsoft Flight Simulator. A lot of the scenery is streamed over the cloud so that you don't have to download 2 petabytes directly to your computer.
Things I’m worried about: 1. Longevity of all digit support. A console may not be supported as time goes on, and that will also bring way more value to older systems. 2. SSDs have a certain lifespan, with the current systems having a special key that is used only for the initial storage, it is NOT easy to just swap a dying drive.
with these coming out in 2024 i would have hope they would at least 2 usb c ports on the front have bluetooth 5.3 and Wifi 7 as that would help with cloud streaming
1:20 about time they made us buy new controllers when the batteries died. I am so sick of just replacing batteries when I can buy expensive hardware to replace all the working bits.
If Microsoft or any game console manufacturer goes totally digital they are going to realize how many of their sales will cease to exist. In many parts of the world, the internet infrastructure isn't there and going all digital adds a ton of latency and other issues. This is what Stadia did and look how long that lasted.
With licensing most consoles need an internet connection to verify, so going digital doesn’t mean anything. Consoles have also been digital since the PlayStation 3 was released. The physical disk existed for licensing but the whole game was installed on your hard drive. Disk games when it comes to consoles now-a-days are a fantasy to the consumer and used to justify the existence of companies like GameStop.
Don’t really care about rechargeable battery. Case in point because them having batteries built into the controller makes them more expensive to repair. I usually always buy battery packs for my controllers. They are pretty cheap and easily replaced.
They could implement disk conversion via code; every physical game will be link with a code that will allow you to download the game while invalidating the actual disk.
I only bought one game for my Xbox Series X, the rest I have played through game pass, and there are lot of killer games I wouldn't have even thought about buying that I've got to experience on game pass. It's a win-win all around.
@@TheBaldrand yet you don’t own the fu**ers. You give them a few dollars to a company they don’t care about you, and if you want to replay those games, you’re shit out of luck, kid. At least I can on steam. I own the licenses to play it even if the game is removed. You console peasants cannot.
@TheBaldr it's not a win win at all. You won't be able to share your games, sell your games, buy games elsewhere and will be slaves to Xbox store/app to buy games, wait for sales (if they're going to go on sale or not). It's s lose lose
@@jponz85if they keep digital codes around though it may not be so much of a problem, or they’ll find a way to make it sharable. But I do hate the no disc thing cause I Re-purchased many of my favorite games digitally so I wouldn’t lose the disc for them or get damaged, but I still have a lot of my other games on disc still, like Call of Duty. I hope we don’t go full digital cause while I prefer getting games digitally, there’s still pros to games on Discs.
Am I the only one who wants batteries? I love switching my battery pack from one another instead of waiting to charge my controller or using it plugged in. Also, better for the environment because you can switch out the batteries easily when they start to die.
Built in battery is not more "sustainable", as once the internal battery is dead, so is the controller's wireless function. Being able to use re-chargable batteries that you can replace is more sustainable. As you get the upside of rechargable, re-usable AA batteries, and a controller that doesn't die with its internal batteries life-cycle. Don't let these muppets trick you with ESG score nonsense that is just trying to rationalize cost-cutting and making CHEAPER controllers. This will be Microsoft's cheapest Gamepad yet. The trend has beeen moving towards controllers that barely last a year before they break down, or get analogue drift. Mean--while, my original Xbox 360 wired controller for PC still works, I STILL use it for my PC gaming, and its lasted over 3 years worth of my PC builds.
You know you can just charge the controller once the battery dies out? Most people aren't replacing re-chargeable AA batteries, as that defeats the purpose.
hot take, i think that double a's in controllers are great. in 15 years every dual sense controller is gonna have battery issues and 360 controllers are still gonna be trotting along because of double a's
Honestly this all looks bad. Microsoft is just forcing more people into gamepass. What Microsoft is doing is bad for the industry. We have already seen so many games vanish off online stores or the stores shut down entirely with physical games you still own the game! I am always sticking to physical where possible. Microsofts predatory shit is bad for the gaming industry as a whole. They cant create a game to save their lives so they buy studios like mad causing more issues in the industry. The worst part of all of this Microsoft has already shown their hand about this, once they have what they want they will bend us all over a barrel and skyrocket the price of gamepass forcing us to pay stupid amounts. Microsoft should leave gaming tbh what they are doing is anti consumer. I play on switch, ps5 and pc btw. the only pointless console is the xbox and this next gen one is even worse.
The thing about the Xbox series x refresh is that they are screwing over everyone that has physical media and back catalog of physical media. How are those people supposed to use their games they have without buying the digital versions?
My design would include a 12TB SSD drive where you can have a lot of games stored on it and not worry about having to uninstall and then reinstall games that you would want to play
Honestly I really hated the no disc drive thing becoming a trend because I’ve always loved the feeling of having a physical copy and also buying used games but with how affordable game pass is it doesn’t matter too much but still I don’t love it I mean my monthly subscription is still $10 on Xbox but I get access to like 20 or 30 games just from the low tier game pass so it’s not the end of the world
Microsoft end goal is to turn the Xbox brand into a soulless Netflix type of service. If you think this is good, just you wait until you're paying $70 for each game as a yearly service.
Since MSFS was a success that had used a hybrid approach with local and cloud hardware, it makes sense why they want to explore it even more, since it's possible now.
The battery is not "built into the controller" it says right there it's SWAPPABLE and rechargeable. Nothing wrong with AA either as I don't have to tether the controller to recharge like a ps5 one. Just stick in AA rechargeable and done. It's just a rechargeable battery pack in Sebile.
4:55 - If Microsoft had planned to release an external Disc Drive, it would obviously been included in this document (everything else seems to be)... It's very strange that Microsoft releases this amount of information without clarifying these issues!
digital games scare me, i dont feel comfortable pumping $70 on a game for it to be taken off the store because "the designer likes andrew tate's views"..... this is the way we're going
a while back, people are talking about how PS5 looks like a wifi router, now people will probably talk about how XBOX Series X slim looks like a mesh wifi router
I love disks and other types of physical video game copies. Growing up they felt special. It’s like owning a special trading card; there’s sentimental value to that. Not to mention there’s a real taxable market for collecting them. That’ll just shrink when it all goes diskless. And that’s just sad.
I think someone needs to remind Microsoft it’s called ‘Xbox’ not ‘XCylinder’. I also don’t want to get rid of my Xbox One X. I’m tempted with the pop up sales for the Series X, but I like that the One X is small and I can place my monitor on top of it and I have a disc drive.

You know it’s the same thing right?
@slapshotjack9806 if you mean that the cylindrical console is the same as a series x but digital, yes I know. I mean beyond that even.
why, just go pc
If that happens. I'm probably going to go full PC gaming. It's better digitally on PC because of Cheaper games and free online.
Not me lol. I’ve been digital for over a decade and nothing and has happened and never will. If anything y’all are still polluting the earth with plastic
Let's see
Yeah that exactly my concern. These people who thinks AA is outdated probably never used a pair of Eneloops. HUGE difference!

Glad this new one seems to be swappable battery but unfortunately it will probably incompatible with rechargeable AA batteries.
its not going away, Austin just got his facts wrong.
Same. I like the AA capabilities
It's almost as if the battery inside the new controller would be rechargeable 🤔
These days no games actually come on the disk itself. The disk is just a way to prove you own the game and have the right to play.
PC has been digital only for a while. Welcome to the future kid
Also no it's not more expensive lmfao
it's 2023 disc drives are obsolete tbh. time to move on.
new xbox is the definition of "you will own nothing and you will be happy with it". good ewaste that needs to be consistently updated over wifi and drain everyone's monthly cap!
You pretty much summed up what all corporates do nowadays, they treat their customers like cows.
Basically these consoles will become ewaste once the servers go offline like the wii u and 3ds because they can't play physical media unlike those systems.

The thing about the controller is this: GuliKit have already launched a Controller that is leagues above all others (Hall-effect sticks & triggers, mechanical face buttons, etc) for the same price as a standard Dualshock 4. As soon as they bring out Playstation & X-Box compatible controllers of the same standard, which they are apparently already working on - Sony & Microsoft won't have much of a choice but to step up their controllers. We just might have a future ahead of us where Hall-effect is the standard for Gaming Controllers. Personally I'm looking forward to seeing what GuliKit are cooking up.

That's the slim version and there gona be alot of back lash dont think we in the era for this
PC gaming has been all digital for decades now.
@@InjimaruXi was going to say exactly this, all digital has been a thing for years on pc and is just normal, imo not a big deal that theres no discs
I think their next step is to get completely rid of physical discs, but as a physical media fan I feel you.
The new Xbox might show slighty better than the current series x because of the HDMI throughput but nothing worth switching for
They are literally switching to all digital that is the master plan. Its to maximize profits and to take away your possessions. You will own nothing and you will be happy I guess.
They won't. Move on.
You really need to get a hold on reality. Game collection is literally dead with this generation. This is the last.

Most of the discs simply house the license now. I installed Call of Duty from the disc and 90% of the install is still on the internal SSD. However, 2TB needs to be the starting standard moving forward.

Not excited about build in rechargeable. Removable pack and option for AAs(rechargeable) is better and less wasteful in my opinion.
It says it's "Rechargeable & swappable" so you'll be able to remove it and replace it
I think I would be a big mistake if no disc drive was not on the new xbox as I like a disc drive because once I completed a game like armored core 6 I can go to a shop and trade it in to make a new game cheaper you can't do that to a no disc drive not unless a new game from the xbox store is cheaper then a disc version as you don't need the disc or box it comes in.
Can't say I'm sad to see the AA batteries go. But it still had an upside, as in easy to replace. As way to many I know did see their PS3/4 controller as E-waste and tossed it away when it went bad vs trying to replace the battery.
For those who don’t know, Phil Spencer did tweet that the leak was from a while ago and the picture of the console isn’t final
I'm still gonna take this with a grain of salt, because changes about Xbox and how they do things can happen at any time.
Rechargeable AAs are so much easier to deal with and swap that some proprietary li-ion battery.

I believe everything you said about retailers dropping support if there are no “physical games “.

I love that hoverboard in the background.
Things I’m worried about:
1. Longevity of all digit support. A console may not be supported as time goes on, and that will also bring way more value to older systems.
2. SSDs have a certain lifespan, with the current systems having a special key that is used only for the initial storage, it is NOT easy to just swap a dying drive.

If Microsoft or any game console manufacturer goes totally digital they are going to realize how many of their sales will cease to exist. They aren't going all streaming, all digital is totally different
With licensing most consoles need an internet connection to verify, so going digital doesn’t mean anything.
Consoles have also been digital since the PlayStation 3 was released. The physical disk existed for licensing but the whole game was installed on your hard drive.

Ppl really complaining about disc drives is something I would never understand. Digital is literally the future wether we like it or not .
Whenever a company says “sustainability” or “environmentally friendly” they really mean “will charge you more for giving you less”.

Daaaamn. Gonna miss the old days of getting excited buying the physical copy of a game.
Well every physical media are being discontinued next year. Everything is going digital now. So what's the point of having a disk drive?
No disk drive is a no for me. Microsoft is out of touch completely for that.
The only reason to buy a newer version of the same console generation, is when they improve the performance. I'll wait for the PS5 Pro.
